"But first you should check your near-term memory" I have had dyspraxia since birth, which amongst other things severely affects my short-term memory. I'd appreciate it if you didn't attack me for something outside of my control, makes you look like kind of a dick. Also my opinion of the game is shared by pretty much everyone, with an average of 38% score for this title, so I'd say my opinion is pretty valid.
TB, keep up all of the great work. You really help a lot of us out when we're trying to research games before we buy, or when we're just bored. You've always got the best content, and I love your videos.
17:55 "It's an Activision game, it'll probably never go on sale." I open Steam, first shop page says: "Activision publisher weekend, all Activision games reduced by 25%". LOL
Yes, yes, I know your name is TotalBiscuit. And I know that I absolutely love every WTF Is episode, even if I don't particularly like the game. Thanks for doing this. Thanks SO MUCH!!
I don't "mark" games, nor do I give scores. The sooner you stop treating my videos as reviews the happier you'll be. If you apply the same standards that you apply to reviews to my videos then you're going to have a bad time.
I remember before this game was released, this game was hyped for more than anything else that was coming out that month, and people said that this would be the next turtles in time. Yeah, they sure hit that nail on the head.
I still remember the last TMNT game I played on PC like 5 or 6 years ago. It was the adaptation of the animated comic and was one of my favourite adaptation game of all time. It was like you were watching the whole series and playing at the same time.
In the beginning the franchise had the word hero in place of ninja, they later changed it back to ninja. I know, because my little brother had toys with "Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles" printed on the packaging.
It is a perferct game for TB to do a lets play, it has all of the graphical wonders and glitches for TB to look into and we will be happy to hear all of TBs wonder sounds. This is be the most watched LP on the internet. :D
Those symbols can mostly be reached through key combinations like '+e. So '+e = é, "+o=ö. Or you can use ALT combinations (ALT+129=ü. The main difference between keyboards like qwerty and azerty is the key layout and therefore the speed with which you can type in certain languages. Basically every layout (QWERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak, AZERTY) has variants.
I can confirm that TB is correct - in many parts of Europe in the 1990's they were known as the "Hero Turtles", for the reason he mentioned. It may have been just in the UK and Ireland, however.
Shitty game...but I do like the throwback to the first movie. Partners In Kryme 'Turtle Power' on the intro screen. Though it does not seem to be the full song, which is sad.
And it's worth noting, the counter system is 2 fold. Pressing the counter button puts your Turtle in to a 'state', in which if an attack is launched during that state; he'll counter. If you press the button at the SAME TIME in which an attack was launched, your turtle will only DEFLECT the blow, and not counter. The games biggest issue is truly explaining it's own mechanics..
In germany TMH/NT also received a title theme by Frank Zander, a rather well known Schlager- and Pop musician. His background makes it kind of odd, but his Voice saves it. I believe it's about as cherished as the original english one is to americans.
I agree with some points like the cutscenes, the counter (actually you have to press the counter button REALLY soon, otherwise you'll just somewhat block), the glitches..but it highly depends what you expect from the game. For me, the only way to play it is with friends in coop and for a 15€ title you shouldn't expect some really high quality stuff since you're mainly having a good time with your friends and stuff like cutscenes/glitches make you laugh, when not alone. They're not gamebreaking.
thank u for the review TB but i believe u have missed on 1 point that needs reviewing too, which is how good is the story in this game? does it have a good deep story following the original series or is it just a spin off with just a bad story element. i am one of these players that do not care about if the game-play is good or not as long as the story is good enough, this review was basically on the game-play and i would love to know about the story. looking forward to your reply.
The song playing in the menu (Turtle Power) is from the first movie...how they got the license to that song I have no idea, hehe. The whole song can be heard during the credits, yert they do not even mention it. Strange...
Okay so; Opinion--- I got it, I loved it. It does have some MAJOR flaws, but I don't find them to be game ruining. The combat feels like a less-polished version of Arkham Batman games. The parkour is fun, the combat IS fun, it just has some issues that need to be sussed out. I actually loved the art direction they went in for the turtles. They are after all giant mutant turtles...they are supposed to look a tad strange, Part of the uncanny valley. The combat itself felt good, but of course the game had issues. I dont really see the combat as being lackluster.
have you ever tried playing Halo? i love halo to bits so much infact i bought an adapter for it to use my mouse and keyboard on it and it's good but one thing i've picked up on is that the guns in that game and most console fps are so much bigger and hog alot of the screen
I personally think that the Matrix: Path of Neo had one of the best free-form combat ever, the swords swished, the punches made this nice belting sound oh! and the pole weapon is INSANELY fun! If you want a awesome free-form brawler, get Path of Neo everyone.
The "Hero" instead of "Ninja" bit was due to Germany's censorship laws and it mainly was restricted to the videogames and the original english title, as in most translations the turtles were still refered to as ninjas. Fun fact: Germany was also responsible for Contra becoming Probotector in Europe, with the 2 mains being replaced by robots.
As always is nice to see your review alongside other ones to get a full picture of a game. I was pleasantly surprised they added in an option for AZERTY keyboards. Those are only used in France and Belgium as far as I know. Without rebindable keys, it's nice the game can recognise AZERTY. But it's just a detail and it certainly doesn't excuse the bad camera and bugs in this game.
The graphic style was to depict them in some weird, "Hyper-realistic 3D" type of manner, to make them look like actual mutated turtles, but it conflicts so bad with their little comic-panel cutscene artwork, so in result it just made them look, weird. AND LOOK WHAT THEY DID TO DONNIE'S FACE!
I got it the day it came out and I liked it a lot too! I never had any of the problems or bugs he is having, there were a few issues with the combat at times but other than that it was a great game and totally worth the $15.
I've always just taken these video's of your thoughts on the game at that point in time; helpful, but ultimately not the be all and end all of if a game is going to be terrible as things can change and sometimes do.
TotalBiscuit, do you have like a kind of marking rubric for gaming? Like an actual physical standard that you mark games against? Or do you just believe the gaming industry is too dynamic to implement such a thing? I'm just asking because I've noticed that sometimes you can be inconsistent by what you consider factors that aren't/are redeemable, that's all I could consider an issue when watching first impressions. P.S. Honest question or hopefully constructive criticism. Keep up the good work.
Yes I know, I have played around 20 hours or more now, and I own all the games in the series and have played them since childhood... So yes they usually is kinda wonky at start, and when I mod, it usually solves my issues, but this is bad even from them. The game runs good now technically after the 2nd beta patch. Im still having some issues with gameplay mechanics like superfast units, low morale and 4 min 14 000 men battles etc... It feels battelwise arcady and campaign map like it should..
I've played the game myself and had a lot of fun doing so. It does have a ton of weird bugs, but I think $15 is a reasonable price for what you are getting.
All languages based on the latin branch (spanish, italian, portuguese, french, etc) use é à, etc. Those symbols exist in any character set (keyboard type), be it Qwerty, azerty or dvorak.
I was going to suggest that this is a "kids first brawler" type of game, but noticed it's PG 16(EU) and T in US. Then thought it's for TMNT fans, but saw how the turtles look and the ctscene quality. I had high hopes when i heard the intro music and saw the shaded figures, but alas after that it all went downhill. I guess if you're a really big turtles fan(even if i'm one), you could play it just because "hey, turtles", but that's probably it.
I don't know what you're basing your condemnation of the animations on. They look quite good to me. Very smooth and distinct, all the attacks impact the target and the target responds by flinching in a way appropriate to the direction and type of attack. I don't see any call for complaint there. The game as a whole looks quite nice. I don't doubt the other issues though.
Well thank you. I just have zero tolerance for people who throw that around, especially after TB and Jesse both made videos on the issue, that well explained their points. Hell, even if they WERE paid to like games, I don't think it would bother me all that much, TB maybe, since he is a critic, but not Jesse. I'm just sick of people being mean to people who just want to inform or entertain us, or just to make us laugh, FOR FREE.
yes, Cryengine 3 is a superb looking engine, and for a freebie unity is pretty good looking,. BUT as far as i know, they are limited to the modern call of duty style mechanics, i have never seen a "proper" shooter on those engines, ive seen a fair few on UE3, so, i have to give UE3 a few props for being more mechanically flexible. if they were used to vertex, they would probably find it very easy. it all depends on what you are used too
Yeah, I remember watching it and it was called "Teismelised Ninjakilpkonnad" in Estonian, which translates to "Teenage Ninja Turtles". So in a sense, they weren't mutated, just regular ninja turtles :P
azerty is the standard keyboard in some countrys, It's a bit of a pain when a game has default wasd-controls and dont let you rebind them... imagine using zqsd on a qwerty-keyboard, it doesn't work (there are ways around it ofc... out of game though)
no, its running IDtech III. yes, thats right, the Quake 3 arena engine, same as COD is still running, as that is the main activision mandated graphics engine.
Thank you very much for doing a WTF is on this game. I was sorely tempted to buy it due too being a TMNT fan when I was younger. I would have been in a really bad place if I had to have experienced this for myself. Just wanted to give you my appreciation on you suffering on my behalf. It was worth it to me at least.
I can not speak for Europe but in Germany it was also called hero turtels. Enjoy the following on youtube: Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles Intro Uncut (german)
Yes, Sweden had the Hero Turtles to. But it was Ninja Turtles to sometimes. I think the games were Ninja Turtles? Not sure. I remember both and it was confusing.
That's probably something you prefer, I'm just glad Saint's Row went absurd so I wasn't suffocated by the maturity involved in GTA IV. I hope GTA V finds a balance between 'real world' and 'real real world' aka. The world is a pretty random and insane place and GTA IV is too gritty to be considered 'more realistic'.
qwertz has Y and z reversed and not much else that should matter. I am actually using a qwertz keyboard, well... two language layouts which i can dynamically switch, and I hardly felt the need to drop back to qwerty. besides most good games simply remap keys transparently according to your current layout.
So you are comparing Third-person shooter and First-person shooter with Action-adventure? I didn't mention but it is kinda obvious that I was talking about same video game genres like TB was comparing Batman: Arkham City which is same genres as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.
out of the shadows is great power ballad by iron maiden. you should give it a listen if you like tht sort of thing :D (btw, out of the shadows and into the sun are part of the lyrics)
I just like to point out that it does prey on nostalgia, though perhaps "prey" is a harsh word. The opening song links to the first movie. There are references to stuff Donatello made in previous series and/or movies, quotes,... there is even a dance move that links to the second movie. So they are certainly trying to pull in older fans as well as new fans. I agree with your other points, the whole look is aimed at the kids. Just wanted to share my thoughts.
First, I have to say that if you found giant mutant turtles attractive it would be concerning. Second, I don't see any reason for complaint. The art style is pleasant and fresh. They look very polished and true to form. I'm actually quite impressed that a licensed game bothered to put so much work into the art and animations. It's top quality in those respects.
There's probably already a comment about that, but 922 is too many to check so here I go. In France it was always known as TMNT, we never had the "hero" replacement.
"i'm feeling some negativity from you lately"
Cynical Brit Dot Com
I feel these days like a lot of complaints about my videos can be addressed en-masse by saying "I apologize for having standards"
"In Europe", no, TB, it was not called Hero Turtles in "EUROPE". Maybe in UK, but not in most of the Europe.
10:57
"Turtle time!"
It is in fact turtle time.
I died.
"I forgot to set my turtles to stealth."
WayForward make an awesome 2D TMNT arcade game.
TB, keep up all of the great work. You really help a lot of us out when we're trying to research games before we buy, or when we're just bored. You've always got the best content, and I love your videos.
I used to like the Original Cartoons when I was a younger... Although these days all TMNT is, is a blatant cash in.
17:55 "It's an Activision game, it'll probably never go on sale."
I open Steam, first shop page says: "Activision publisher weekend, all Activision games reduced by 25%".
LOL
This game actually cool looking.
Yes, yes, I know your name is TotalBiscuit. And I know that I absolutely love every WTF Is episode, even if I don't particularly like the game. Thanks for doing this. Thanks SO MUCH!!
This game man XD its horrible
This is why im subbed to you TB, for those first impressions of strong titles.
Not those boring news parts.
I don't "mark" games, nor do I give scores. The sooner you stop treating my videos as reviews the happier you'll be. If you apply the same standards that you apply to reviews to my videos then you're going to have a bad time.

I love how with these WTF Is videos you can just go to a minute before the end of the video and hear what TB has to say summed up into one phrase.
"I can't talk! This game is too bad!" I have not laughed at a video this much in ages! :)
15:30 I lost it right at the "new and wonderful bug". hahahahahaha, hilarious.
I can confirm that TB is correct - in many parts of Europe in the 1990's they were known as the "Hero Turtles", for the reason he mentioned. It may have been just in the UK and Ireland, however.
"This game lies about being a good game!"
Quote of the episode.
TB, They are Heroes, so it's not much of a lie :D
having fun is the main element, because THAT'S why you play videos in the first place
Shitty game...but I do like the throwback to the first movie. Partners In Kryme 'Turtle Power' on the intro screen. Though it does not seem to be the full song, which is sad.

Depends on what their goal was. A good game that happens to be ninja turtles or a ninja turtles game expected to sell because it's part of the brand.
have you ever tried playing Halo? i love halo to bits so much infact i bought an adapter for it to use my mouse and keyboard on it and it's good but one thing i've picked up on is that the guns in that game and most console fps are so much bigger and hog alot of the screen

T-U-R-T-L-E POWER! I heard that song playing during the intro and I will admit I was kinda dancing. Oh nostalgia...
I clicked like because I love your honesty, TB. Thanks.
Apparently not, since I tried that earlier in the video. Jesse also has a terrible taste in videogames
As always is nice to see your review alongside other ones to get a full picture of a game. I was pleasantly surprised they added in an option for AZERTY keyboards. This is not an Xbox or PS3 channel
That was a badass hood ornament for your car at the end of the video. That was the idea, right? Right?
Yes I know, I have played around 20 hours or more now, and I own all the games in the series and have played them since childhood... Also, the toys from Japan had white comic style eyes, where as the West had pupils to make them appear less threatening. They later got imported.
Jesse seems to have fun with this game, also by the look of what he played when you go stealth other turtles will also stealth with you.
Just to be clear if any people wondered, an AZERTY keyboard is a french keyboard layout.
I've played the game myself and had a lot of fun doing so. It does have a ton of weird bugs, but I think $15 is a reasonable price for what you are getting.
After watching TB for 6 hours straight on Twitch, now watching this. How am I not sick of his voice?
Finaly! our keyboard layouts get recognition :p
tmnt out of the shadows lets hope it goes back into the shadows i swear u come up with the best 1 liners
Sorry if I'm mistaken, but didn't you make a video on Journey? Then again, that is the only console exclusive game I've seen you cover.
odd, they stated that it will come to the PC next year at PAX, so, where did you get confirmation of it being console only from?
I am happy for you. Please, enjoy the game. If you're having fun with it, then don't let anyone change your oppinion.
TotalBiscuit, could you please tell me if when GTA 5 comes out in 1 week will you be doing a cover on it? please reply
All languages based on the latin branch (spanish, italian, portuguese, french, etc) use é à, etc. Those symbols exist in any character set (keyboard type), be it Qwerty, azerty or dvorak.
I found it amusing that he didn't even bother to comment on the invisible platform between the train cars.
Thats so true, I would never ever buy a game he plays solely on his recomendation. He is a fun guy tough.
I looked it up, and he did make a video about it. The thing is, it was only an 8 minute video from PAX, so I could see how no one remembers it.
i love it when he says "it's an activision game so it probably never will" while there's an activision sale going on right now on steam xD
Never in my life did I think I would hear the phrase "I forgot to set my turtles to stealth."
Ah TMNT... Such fond memories of the original cartoon and live action films... And album releases lol... Some memories are better than others lol
I just have zero tolerance for people who throw that around, especially after TB and Jesse both made videos on the issue, that well explained their points. yes, Cryengine 3 is a superb looking engine, and for a freebie unity is pretty good looking,.
As a TMNT fan as a kid, i'm going to forget I ever saw this video, or ever heard of this game.
azerty is the standard keyboard in some countrys, It's a bit of a pain when a game has default wasd-controls and dont let you rebind them... imagine using zqsd on a qwerty-keyboard, it doesn't work (there are ways around it ofc... out of game though)
no, its running IDtech III. yes, thats right, the Quake 3 arena engine, same as COD is still running, as that is the main activision mandated graphics engine.
Awesome videos man keep it up
Oh my gosh at the end it was brilliant
In Denmark i think it was always teenage mutant ninja turtles, never heard about hero turtles. And i played with the toys when i was a child
The game was pretty easy to beat other than the obvious problems, I only wish it was longer.
What are you on about? They've made a bunch of new Turtles series since the first one. It's still on-going.
Same here. I'm Swede and the same age. Never heard of "Hero Turtles" either.
Always been "Ninja Turtles".
..not yet..but it WILL come! ALL GTAs came to the PC eventually, if not were originally came from the pc (like GTA 1 and 2)
Thank you very much for doing a WTF is on this game. I was sorely tempted to buy it due too being a TMNT fan when I was younger. I would have been in a really bad place if I had to have experienced this for myself. Just wanted to give you my appreciation on you suffering on my behalf. It was worth it to me at least.

Azerty is used in France and Belgium (and perhaps some other countries I am unaware of). Purely FYI :).

I like how TB reads the puzzle's instructions out loud and then completely ignores them. :)
qwertz has Y and z reversed and not much else that should matter. I am actually using a qwertz keyboard, well... two language layouts which i can dynamically switch, and I hardly felt the need to drop back to qwerty.
besides most good games simply remap keys transparently according to your current layout.

good point. i have no idea what goes through there minds at all either, they seem to be on another planet.
He said probably. So that makes it all the funnier that its on sale when the video is released.
I really like the graphics/art style of this game.
After hearing the rant from the beginning i was just waiting for the back into the shadows line haha.
Azerty is the keyboard-layout used in Belgium.

Well, the music at the menu screen was cool :)
There's probably already a comment about that, but 922 is too many to check so here I go. In France it was always known as TMNT, we never had the "hero" replacement.
