Nerdy Birdy 2030 I know it's a month late but - When Cloud encounters Cloud, it's a reference to Final Fantasy VII where there is a section of the game where Cloud faces multiple versions of himself (emotionally not physically) in order to realign his actual memories from his false ones.
People call Cloud emo, but... I think he's more emotionally lost and traumatized than emo. In several of these quotes, he questions some of those who have experienced darkness. Like he's searching for a way out of the darkness but doesn't know how to get out on his own. "Are your memories real?" "Can sins be redeemed?" "Do you have any doubts?" "Is there anything you regret?" "So darkness may not be evil..." That's just the impression I get from him: a person lost in the darkness of his past.
Seliasei Cloud was always pretty confident throughout most of FF7 and the expanded universe, save for AC where Cloud is literally DYING and has plenty reason to be depressed. Unfortunately his depressed AC persona became his default.
Fierce Saint Well, for a good part of FF7, his memories and personality were fucked with. It was a different persona resulting from a mix of his memories of Zack's personality and the kind of cocky attitude he expected a SOLDIER 1st class would have. Not to mention, there was 2 years between FF7 and Advent Children. It'd be perfectly understandable and expected for him to become depressed and plagued by feelings of guilt and helplessness like that after things calmed down and he had time for things to sink in completely. He lost his home town, his mother, years of his life to Hojo's torture and experiments, Zack, Aerith, and all the dreams and ambitions he once had. He's had to deal with so much loss in his life and people then start stabbing at his personality in AC. His personality at least seemed to have perked up a bit after the conflict was over with in AC.

So Steve Burton had to go along with the stoicism path of his voice acting with Cloud.
Yeah I think Cloud was more livelier toward the end of FF7. I guess the cloud the voice director was going for (and probably the dissidia game too) was the Advent Children Cloud when he was sad, but this is just speculation

The real reasoning is the former Activision Blizzard Entertainment CMO took over Square Enix as a new CMO around in 2018 and it's not a coincidence that the secret audition for FF7R were being held around the end of 2018 without even telling everybody even the OG voice cast why they were all replaced. It was about cash-grabbing marketing to benefit the viewership for the CW/Warner Bros/Sony/Funimation networks because it's no coincidence either that the newbies were all associated with those same networks, and they wanna target/market the gamers into their lowly profit shows like All American, Fairly Odder shows, Supergirl, and Teen Wolf shows.
Oh yes. I'm sure you'd be confident while taking on the world government and an alien clone god that summoned a giant planet busting meteor after it killed your first love and you found out your memories weren't your own.
Haters gonna hate but I think Steve Burton is perfect as Cloud and he's the only perfect voice actor for Cloud. We all should know that it's not his fault (nor the other characters' voice actors) for the little off lines. So quit blaming on him! -_-
I think he is alright as Cloud. He does sound emotionless in a lot of areas. I know it is not his job to direct how he sounds. It is the director's decision, but he does seem off on lots of lines.
I really think the reason for Cloud being so visibly depressed is the fact he lost his memories, so all he remembers are the bad parts of his life like Sephiroth killing and hurting his friends,so he tries to emulate what he thought he would've been like having gone through those events, even though in FF7 he was cheerful to a point like at Costa Del Sol or at Junon when he thinks back to putting the Shinra Uniform on for the first time and being proud of it.
His voice acting isn't lazy. That's just how he talks. And it's cool. :P Besides...I'd rather have him like this than be like Zack. Just jockin' another character. >_>

Geostigma, basically a black plague, who had it? A whole of people including cloud and Denzel that's why cloud went away not answering tifas calls then at the when fights Sephiroth his Geostigma was gone (before the fight) then Zack shows up as a vision to give cloud some life back after that he defeats Sephy, then after that he fights these two dudes forgot the names and ultimately blows up with them, then Cloud shows up in aeriths church in water healing him and he grabs Denzels hand and brought him in the water..healing Denzels Geostigma then kids were chanting getting in the water with the rest of his crew watching then Aerith and Zack show up and Aerith basically says...Its okay now you can be happy, something along the line of saying your forgiven and you can life a good life with Tifa, and Zack waves and part ways.. Then.. Cloud Smiles..
To Steve's Credit, he doesn't pause THAT much between lines like the first Dissidia and the time he pauses is justified. This time is much fluid and gave more sentiment to Cloud and thats an awesome improvement! Way to go Steve! :D

Play the game and do the research or just fucking read, "But in AC they messed up his character and made him emo" Cloud was basically like this at the end of ff7 but he was being heroic and knew Sephiroth was the main priority after that he got time to vent and didn't feel like he was forgiven for obvious reasons but him and Tifa were starting a life together taking care of Denzel, then what? Geostigma, basically a black plague, who had it? A whole of people including cloud and Denzel that's why cloud went away not answering tifas calls then at the when fights Sephiroth his Geostigma was gone (before the fight) then Zack shows up as a vision to give cloud some life back after that he defeats Sephy, then after that he fights these two dudes forgot the names and ultimately blows up with them, then Cloud shows up in aeriths church in water healing him and he grabs Denzels hand and brought him in the water..healing Denzels Geostigma then kids were chanting getting in the water with the rest of his crew watching then Aerith and Zack show up and Aerith basically says...Its okay now you can be happy, something along the line of saying your forgiven and you can life a good life with Tifa, and Zack waves and part ways.. Then.. Cloud Smiles..

To Steve's Credit, he doesn't pause THAT much between lines like the first Dissidia and the time he pauses is justified. This time is much fluid and gave more sentiment to Cloud and thats an awesome improvement! Way to go Steve! :D
