Easy, the one that hires you.
rezdog187 Lol can’t agree more with the comment
@@eb151000 Hell, CO P. O. S. T. certification is only good for a year. You have to get hired on to a dept. in some fashion (full or part time - aka reserves at my local dept.) before it expires.
I'd stress for any qualified applicant to not rush into the first offer they get or run into the agency they think will get them hired the fastest. When I was in the Army, I spoke briefly to a Richmond VA patrol officer. He told me it took him 5/five years to get on the Richmond police force! 😟👮🏻🚓
mhmm
DL Lambert That was obviously back when a lot of people wanted to be cops, nowadays that 5 years will takes 5 months
Or join the Alaska state police where your backup is... well... sometimes there just is none.
Just flag down a passing Grizzly bear for assistance.
@@olliebear4850 or Wolf and boom a police dog XD
another Law Enforcement position where you work with very little or no backup is as a Park Ranger and he didnt mention anything about going that route in LE.
Jackass
I wanted to move to Alaska and be a state trooper. I know about the conditions of living in Alaska but I hear a lot of people say the worst thing is how expensive everything is and you need close to 6 figures to doing good
> *the vest was expired*
Ugh come one chief, this vest is soOoOoO last season...the bad guys will laugh :c
My dad was a state trooper and he ran into that where back up was an hour way. He pulled over a car. The car was occupied by 4 males the passenger had a news paper on his lap with his hands under it. Because backup was an hour away he told them to just slow it down and backed away.
The young Gunman sometimes you have to swallow your pride and remember the most important thing is going home you family. Know your limitations. 4 on 1 over a speeding ticket.
Your dad was a very smart man
Definitely have to pick and choose your battles
Very good point. It makes you think.. thank you for posting this!
Dam that shit pisses me off tbh
I personally thing every state patrol officer needs a partner. That's just my opinion.
Gotta love it. In the city, where you're most likely to need updated equipment and resources, you end up working on a cut throat budget. In the county, where things are calmer, you have access to everything you could possibly need.
Around me at least, the county gets the same taxes from those inside and outside cities so the county is essentially getting money from city residents for policing but they don't have to spend any money policing them since the city has their own PD so it makes them better off financially. Cities should get a cut of the county tax that their residents pay if the city provides their own fire, EMS and law enforcement.
In addition, my city doesn't even benefit from the county swat team the residents pay for cause it's based too far away so my city created (and pays for) their own team in order to have an acceptable response time.
You learn to be more efficient and effective given those city circumstances though!
It's really Bad in California. My city still has outdated police vehicles that are so old they still use the huge lightbars, not the slick LEDs you see today.
Thats how it was when i started.. shitty equipment, shitty cars... there was literally holes in the floorboard of the vehicle i drove, and we used old DOT signs to patch the holes.
That's not always the case. Depends on a few factors. In my county, we just caught up to the PD of the major city about 3 years ago, before that we were always significantly behind.
I went from being a city cop to becoming a state trooper and one of the biggest things I'm happy about is I'm no longer a slave to the radio. I can go out and be as proactive as I want. I used to knock on highway patrol like any other cop about "not being real cops," but I quickly saw that I was finding more dope and guns then I ever found in the city. It really surprised me and I'm very happy with my decision. And it is true that back-up is almost always more then 30 minutes away.
Thinking of it myself trooper for Wisconsin
just got into the NYPD academy and im so excited!
Shazam1107 How long did the hiring process take you??
Nice man.
not long, it took less then a year cause of the grade I got
Nice! You should buy a personal firearm and shoot it on the range, also go to the gym as the academy dosent teach you that much.
Nice .. congrats on becoming New York’s finest..
One thing about state patrol and maybe county is that you will see a lot of gory high speed accidents and fatalities on the highway.
You're going to see that anywhere you work. Think about the people that drive like bats out of hell on any road.
About 5mo ago, doing security work, I witnessed a bad TA, 2 vehicles involved. One driver had minor head injuries. The other vehicle flip over, 😧 & four young gang hoods ran out! The van was stolen & the teens wrecked it. 2 were later caught by police. 👮🏻🚓😀
@@DavidLLambertmobile I suggest you do not call people "gang hood rats" whether or not you may think they are. It just makes you look bad.
@@officer401 except the state police will see the worst of it the people would be crashing at high speeds
I worked for a federal agency for close to 9 years. Now I'm on SWAT in a city PD and I like it way more. As he mentioned, the camaraderie is higher and it's like a family. The city is where the action is. Basically, if you want to be what you really consider a "cop", work for a city PD. The budget issues he mentioned are true, but you need to pick a city that takes training and equipment seriously. In my city, we are always the first in the county to get the newest equipment, and we all have our own patrol cars that we take home. One drawback to most average size cities is that the SWAT team is an extra assignment, so I still have to work for patrol. In the county, depending on the size, you're more likely to be a full time SWAT "operator" if you go that route. Just train, workout, and execute missions every day.
Lastly, if you are excited to be a "cop", dont go with Highway Patrol or a similar agency. I know guys that do that and they will tell you they are basically roadside assistance with a badge. Not trying to knock them, and they pay well, but its nothing like being a "cop". Sure its law enforcement, but you could work there 20 years and have no experience responding to a stabbing, robbery, shooting, large gang fight, domestic violence, and on and on. Its traffic accidents and tickets and you wont really feel like a cop.
Thank you for this quick summary. I’m still trying to decide what law enforcement agency I would like to apply myself too. I was thinking border patrol agent but now I’m believing I can just start off in the city first and see if I enjoy the day in day out aspect of it all.
The benefits of being a State Trooper is generally better pay, more confidence in yourself because most times it is ONLY you. Less time getting calls to the same ole crap. Like "there dog came into my yard calls".
Also you still have domestics on the rode and you can still working gangs, shootings etc by joining the burea of investigations division.
All in all it just depends on what you like doing. I love the Patrol. Less frivolous calls... oh and you have jurisdiction across the whole state so when someone ask do you have jurisdiction?? 🤨🤣
Thank you, I wanna be like you when I grow up.
@@viqarkhan2979 In mi state police they let you pick what region you work in.
Thank you, I'm still deciding between sheriff's office or Highway patrol, since I live in a very urbanized area of the county, I'll say they see at lot of action but I'm not sure if I want that kind of action. My wife doesn't like the idea of me becoming a LEO but I guess she'll be okay if I'm just writing tickets 😅
You should do a video on police reserves! As in the roles they play, general usefulness etc,
Up
My man.
Waste of time... either do all in or nothing
EZY. I think they have a place. The department may be required to have X amount of officers but they don't have the budget to hire that many full time officers, so they have reserve officers to fill that role. Another reason may be that the department may have a contract with an event or building to provide security but they don't want to tue up full time officers for an event that may only happen once or twice a month. So they have the reserve officers fill that role. I was a reserve officer trying to gain experience to become a full time officer. I resigned because my personal life kept conflicting with the scheduled details I was supposed to attend.
I used to work at a 24 hr. convience 🏪. There was this guy I first saw stop in that was a DOC officer. There was one time when he was that he was sporting the SWORT (prison swat) uniform and I was a little surprised. So, for context, this guy is about my height, 5'6, and and small guy. But I'm not naive to small guys being able to kick butt (just look at the smurf boat for SEAL school). Then a few weeks later he comes walking in in all black.I asked if he had quit the prison and he said nope, I'm on reserves...just putting in those hours. Let me tell you...when he was on I felt sorry for anyone laughing at this small guy on reserves. (This was also when my brother couldn't stop getting involved with the police. So I'd call my parents, he was a minor, and let them know and to tell him to behave or he'd have to deal with that guy. I'd never challenge him to a fight for anything.)

I love your informational videos about police work. I'm about to take the Academy Test for a specific department, and your tips did help me a lot to decide where to work.
Good video. Quite a few this week. With most Sheriffs Department you have to cover so much area and back-up can be far away. My sister needed back-up once and closest unit was 40 minutes away
Love your videos man. You're genuine, transparent and you care about the fans. I'm in Georgia so I hope I get to meet up with you before I move back north
Ive been waiting for this even tho i never thought a video would actually be made! Thanks alot

Hi Officer401, I like this week you put some video almost every day. I watch from Romania and it is interesting to learn more about cops in US.
Thank you or sharing the wealth Officer401! Be safe/stay frosty! Best wishes to you/family for continued success.
I really needed this video. Thank you @officer401! 💙🖤
Your videos are so helpful officer 401 thank you for consistently amazing content
I am a state trooper and where I am currently assigned is pretty urban. We have city county and state all working close together. I have also worked in areas where my back up is 25 minutes out.
Great Video!!! This summarizes the basic differences between city, county, and state law enforcement jurisdictions very well!!! Thank you very much!!! Very Informative!!!✨
Great video. Looking to get out of the army here shortly had some questions and this video answered some of them! Thanks
Being a Trooper worked for me after working for a City, SO & now state. But you're absolutely right. In my Troop there is 5-7 Troopers and 1 sergeant out on graveyard for 8 counties. In this area the smaller counties tend to call us repeatedly because there simply aren't enough deputies in some of the counties. I'm assigned to a county of 300,000 people and some nights I'm by myself and we don't have radios with the local PDs or SO. The dispatcher has to call them landline if we need backup and our closest Trooper is too far out.
Do I need a degree to be a Texas state trooper or will my military experience be accepted.
I want to be a game warden but I hear it is very competitive to become one. My best bets are to get a bachelors degree related to wildlife or join the military and be an MP (for experience),but I’ve been looking at Maritime Law Enforcement in the coast guard and it seems pretty neat too.
Thank you for the video! Been waiting on this one!

I'm planning on joining the Indiana State Police. Your video is very accurate.
Glad you mentioned the Flint documentary -- I found it pretty good.
Ive been looking at different agencies lately, trying to compare. Thanks for the insight 🇺🇸
Yeah your perception of City Police and County Deputy when it comes to equipment and the garage and budget is actually reversed for me. All of our cities here have fantastic cars with amazing equipment and meanwhile I’m having to hard restart my computer in my vehicle 3 times at the beginning of my shift just to log on, and I still hand write my tickets..😒
Would be interested to see something about your opinion on University police. Great video as always
Dougi233 Agreed. I am friends with a lot of the officers at my University, and I go on ride alongs with them on the weekends. It seems to me, the one advantage they have over all other agencies, is that they know their jurisdiction intimately.
Anyone remember the officer from the college that was shot, off campus, in Colorado Springs? He was a former figure skater. All of CSPD came to his defense saying that he was one of them even though he was working for UCCS PD (they also said it about all of that dept. and other colleges in the city as well) because people said that he shouldn't have responded because he's only campus police and didn't have the training CSPD officers did.
Dougi233 Great place to be used as a stepping stone. Very restricted and liberal though.
When I worked as a 085 security for the VA medical center in Pittsburgh PA, the U of Pittsburgh police officers would help us out a lot. 👮🏻🇺🇸👍🏻😉. Our 083 police were unarmed at that time(1990s). Now VA/veteran affairs use SIG 9x19mm pistols.

Your videos are awesome! very informative. Very helpful. I also love your intro theme!
Officer401 is the only UA-camr I don’t skip through advertisements. He puts in hours of work for these free videos. Thank you!
Where I work our city is over 50% of the county's population so we while the county has a bigger budget we(city) get better stuff. The county has to fund all its other departments, not just patrol. Also, their is no separation between county and Sheriff. The Sheriff's office has a patrol division which is the enforcement branch.
That sweatpants quip had me laughing so hard, I farted. 😆
I know this is an old video but it’s the info I needed, thanks again 401!
Best part of my day, getting a Officer 401 new video notification.
So I’m more interested in serving the community and making people feel safe whenever they see me instead of writing tickets all day. I was hooked on stage police but listening to you I feel like county would be the best for me or maybe even city I just need to look more into my nearby city pd’s to really make a final decision on what I should do.
State highway patrol writes tickets for a reason as well as backs up local agencies
My dad, my older brother and grandfather were all city cops, im just joining the academy now, but im chosing New York State Police, lets just say they arent very happy with me lmfao.
NY State trooper is an amazing job with MUCH higher pay and benefits no shame there
what was your rank? They are processing up to 10,000 now in September. A friend and cousin of mine graduated from the NYSP academy in November last year. They are now in Troop NYC and love it. I’m going to apply to NYSP next exam because I am only 17. NYPD is my very last resort which I hope doesn’t come to that haha.
Just be prepared. State police handle murders, manhunts, missing people, hostage situations and usually do more of that and handle other stuff more than just catching speeders like county or city cops do.
Lol idiot, you still do all those things as a Trooper, I can definitely tell you’re not gonna last in the academy

When I was working at a convenience store, I was making more than an officer from the PD of the town 30 miles away. A reg. customer was on the dept. At the time he was on that department he was only a few *cents* above minimum wage where as I started out at 60 cents above min. wage just for saying I'd work graves. Then take into account the raises I got before he was a customer and I was making a whole buck more an hour than him. How shitty is that?
It varies between the states . In Mi sheriff deputy get less city on average
of course state troopers. If I get to have a magical hat that gives me special trooper powers u can bet I'm in on it.

You said that troopers backup is sometimes an hour away. I’ve heard that a lot and I was wondering would a county or city officer who was closer than a state unit respond to a backup request?
Cory Chapman, sir, If you use your brain, you may actually be able to answer your own question
Im currently in the academy for a campus police department for a state school. Not where I originally wanted to end up but after meeting my chief and some of the people within the department, I am beyond grateful and very excited to start my L.E. career! Any advice for when. I finish up with the academy in December? How similar or different is it for a campus compared to city? (Call-wise, obviously a smaller area)
Depends on where you work. Where I am at our day time call volume is similar to surrounding agencies, but overnight we only get 2 or 3 calls because we only have around 2000 students living on campus, most commute. Expect to do lots of things like unlocking people's cars when keys are locked inside, giving jump-starts, doing safety escorts, and generally responding to quality of life calls. I think we usually only average 1 or 2 arrests a month, where as our neighboring jurisdiction averages 1 or 2 per shift.
I like your videos, are very helpful for those who wants to start in the police
You not only helped people decide a career you also at the same time saved peoples lives, good on you Sir!

That being said, you sir provide SO MUCH valuable info on the force. I just wanted to take a moment to thank you for that and whether I make it in or not, dude you are a hell of a cop! Thanks again!

Hey, 401 I live in Flint, MI and I'm about half way done with my police administration and operation degree. I plan to work the city for a while. I'd like to work my way up to LT and them move outside the city.
Flint town was filmed during a bad time. The chief was changing hands, the mayor and city council weren't giving a damn about the amount of violence and crime. I think the budget has gotten an overhaul, as they have been trying to hire more officers, I see newer squad cars. I still say we need 20 more city officers though.
Love your content, keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
What about parole and probations can you do a video on them?

I have seen the size of some of them GA troopers, yea when they call for back-up it's for the suspects protection.
Few years ago saw a peterbuilt hit a GA trooper on a vehicle stop on I95,lucky enough the trooper was not to pissed off about it,he was nice enough to call a tow truck for the pete.
GSP seems to hire the cornbread-fed sumbitches from rural counties that fought growing up.
Like Officer Clifford from Miami K9 vlogs on Miami PDs channel?
Loving all the uploads!
I hoping I can land a job with the Michigan State police, however I do have opportunities in the county where they are hiring at the moment. Amazing video as always.
You forgot the leafy suburbs like where I grew up. Practically the only "crime" the cops had to confront was busting up teenage beer parties in the woods....and then stealing the beer!
Theres also game wardens & university police
The University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) have shit for training...it took The Charlotte Police to lock down the campus during the School shooting last year because the campus police didn't know what the fuck to do and are trained like security guards. A student lost his life trying to disarm the gunman and saved many more students lives. It sure wasn't the campus police....
Now North Carolina Game Wardens are some badasses. I've seen them in action a few times...
But I would not trust any campus police. They aren't trained like a city police officer would be in shooting or any other hand to hand combat to protect themselves or any other crime victim which they most definitely should be...
Great video ! I’m looking forward to start with the county. Hopefully they’ll hire me 🙏
In some places in Ohio, if you are a state trooper or sheriff, you may cover a small area. Some cover several small townships about 10min drive apart between cities because they simply don't have a police office.
Hey all I got a quick question might sound weird but why does the LAPD fleet contain cars with hardly any push bar? From the chases I see on TV I barley or I don’t think I’ve seen one LAPD vehicle with a push bar. It’s usually CHP or the sheriff department who have those. Can anyone shed some light into why this is the case seeing LA is a very vast and big city and you’d think the city would be able to afford push bars.
I think its the money, they have to buy so many cars and rambars etc are expensive. I think its the maintenance cost but I am not sure how ever the Traffic Devision of the LAPD has rambars so IDK but I think its because of the costs of maintenance.
Manuel Weisshand thanks for the response :)
No Problem man!
From my experience in my own department the county has pushbars becsuse they are allowed to PIT vehicles, we (city) are not. The county also has to deal with lots of farm animals (Kansas) so they nudge them off the road if need be. It Also helps save the car if it hits a deer. Us city guys dont have to worry about any of that.
LAPD has a strict pursuit policy. If a pursuit begins they will call CHP and a air unit due to heavy traffic and pedestrian presence. LAPD will rarely be the ones to perform PIT maneuvers.
I am considering working for the Ohio State Highway Patrol
Drew Shaver me too
What’s your insta? Mine’s @rieger99
Reminds me of a good friend who had been in law enforcement for over 10 years. In that time he was a firearms instructor, MET, motorcycle instructor and some other things I forget. He was also a private pilot with his own aircraft that I now own. He decided to apply for a State Police aircraft pilot. He was probably over qualified for the position, but before he could even apply for the pilot position, he had to go thru training as if he had never had any LEO experience, and then do 5 years as a patrol officer before even being considered for a pilot position. Needless to say, he passed and ended up as a pilot for a private corporation.
Very informative video, thank you.
Personally, my plan is to do 4 years as a USAF SF specialist (military police), come back home and serve a few years as a local sheriff’s deputy, and then go for Tennessee Highway Patrol
Gotta remember man it's a different training and mindset from a military LEO to a public LEO.
I'm a USAF Security Forces member and I plan on doing the same, but I'm thinking about going k-9 route since that's a Federal certification and make it easier to join different agencies when I get out.
Jordan Thanks for the reply, and yeah I’m aware of that. For the THP, there are 3 main requirements to join, and you have to qualify for at least one.
1.) Military service
2.) Prior law enforcement experience
3.) College credit
With the route I plan on going, I can check off on all 3 of those which, in my opinion, will shine brighter on my resume and give me a better chance of getting to where I want to be.

I worked with the county in my area for three years. I’m now with the city and I have to say I respond to a hell of a lot more calls for service now then I ever did. I may have 6 reports just for me by the end of shift. I love being in the city. Another plus with being in a city you don’t have to deal with civil process so the deputies still have to respond to the city for evictions and etc.
Great video!!
What’s the difference between a county police department and county sheriff’s department? Just the name?
Usually the same, except the sheriffs office is also responsible for the jail, prisoner transport, civil paper service, and the courts. County police agencies don't mess with that. Where I'm at, there's a county police and sheriffs office. The S/O does not patrol. All they do is court security, prisoners, and civil papers. They wear suits and drive unmarked chargers.
Where I'm from the pay too, state makes starting like 32-38k and county starts at 48-52k not sure about city.....
Robby S I’m glad someone else asked this, I really wondered what the difference was as well.
Not a cop, so take this for what you will, but when i see people getting evicted I normally see a sheriff there, never seen a county police for it. Also big fan of the channel bud keep it up. Hoping I can see you some time on your patrol
Another important thing to remember guys and 99.99% of counties in America do not have county police. You only have the Sheriff”s office. You only find counties that have both near extremely large cities like LA, NY, and Atlanta. In Alabama where I currently work there is no such thing as a county police department. Sheriffs office does everything in county.
401 do a video how you do drug testing in ga and Being color blind how does that work with you???
A partner that isn't...
In the hiring process for Baltimore MD I’m pretty excited!
Where I’m at the budget issues you mention for the City is more common for the sheriffs office, locally the SO doesn’t provide gear, you have to self sponsor the part time academy (and after you work part time they might hire you full time) and they’re short staffed. The smaller city PD’s have decent cars and issue pretty good gear, and the largest city Pd local to me issues everything and will sponsor you through the full time academy, as well as having a pretty good budget for training (something very few departments within 60 miles have).
you forgot one other agency the Fish and Game
Fish and Games is a division of a Law Enforcement Department..
I'm planing on joing the OPP My provical police force (State police in canada)

BOSK yes I'm in highschool then I am going to aplly for a college AND the OPP academy If I get in the police acadmey I am going for OPP If not I want to go to collage and study politic's and law enforcement if I get none of them then I don't know what to do
Yeah you know me 😂
*Salute to you & your family.*
Good discussion but opposite in my neck of the woods on some of your points.
Speaking as a "county mounty" another major difference is that a lot of parts of the county are going to be more 'old school' than the city.....and will respond to old school policing while ignoring the newest and greatest forms of police work. And because the Sheriff handles civil process and court orders, you'll wind up playing diplomat a lot. But he's dead right on the backup situation. My current section is effectively 250 square miles. In the city, backup is 90 seconds away. In the county....you can stretch that charger out to her absolute top speed of about 157 (don't ask how I know) and still be 10 minutes out. I've done car chases solo, backup never got there before it was over, had plenty of solo fights, and foot chases solo in the dark.....and country dark is real dark.
That's a second on it being dark. My county's deputies deal with some crap in the darkest corners in the county.
One reason why I went to the city PD rather than the county after working in the jail. I’m used to having backup there immediately, I have fought before, but I’m not confident enough in my skills to fight someone for 25 minutes alone. I know my limitations. I plan to go to juzitzu once a week in the future though
Anyone know any good Canadian Police youtubers? This American stuff doesn’t apply to me

Unless you're in Ontario or Quebec where there are actually a lot of city departments and provincial police.

Just got on myself but I wish it could be this simple to pick from. It is very competitive especially in the northeast United States. Where you need to score a 90+ on the civil service test get on state or county and then have a few hooks to get you the job. So in essence you take what you can get.

You mention around 2:00 in about agencies having a low budget. I’m sure you’ve heard about the issues in Bibb County, Ga where they are 100+ deputies short because of the pay.
Thank you bud!!

That's right 401. I live Flint Michigan. I NEVER have a cop behind me. It's crazy here.
Awesome video. I've made it to background at my local sheriffs department. Few more steps and it's off the the academy.
Good luck!
