i live in bergen county new jersey. we have a county population of just under 1mil and that number almost doubles on any given day based on visitors. My town’s department is the 3rd highest in the county and the average base pay (before overtime and all that) is just around 150-170k/yr i believe. our chief of police is payed almost 250k a year. We do have a high cost of living but it’s also based on the location in relation to NYC. we are a huge commuter town. just giving you some numbers to bounce around.

This isn’t necessarily true with OT in most of these high paying places a lot of officers make $125-150k a year, that’s still a good amount of money, my lieutenant makes $200k a year and even tho it’s a high cost of living she’s still making a lot of money

NukeSpartan27 Bergen County is also EXTREMELY difficult to get hired in. 90% of departments in the county require at least a bachelor’s degree. For ex-military who are thinking about going into law enforcement after earning a DD-214 blanket: the state of Texas is one of the best states to be a cop. I do have to slightly disagree with Charles, being a DFW resident myself. Dallas PD is, from what I've been told by current and former LEOs, pretty abysmal in almost all regards. They're underpaid, the higher ups don't have their backs (at least since David Brown left), the brass is riddled with scandals (and this isn't even including the Botham Jean incident), they're understaffed, they're required to work insane amounts of OT, and morale is almost nonexistent. To add to all this, Dallas city counsel is almost entirely anti-cop. The surrounding areas, on the other hand, are pretty good places to work as LEO from what I've been told.

Step 2: Go on a 2 week vacation and quit shaving so that when you get to step 3, you look really over worked and stressed out. Both my parents are LEO in Maryland. Maryland is a good State to work in. One nice part about Maryland is that officers have the Law Enforcement Officer's Bill of Rights or LEOBR that protect officers. If an officer is accused of violating department policy, an officer has the right to a trial board made up of other officers, and to have an attorney or union rep present during questioning and during any and all proceedings.

Nice to see Kansas on the list. We have a pretty good pay/cost of living balance. Medium to large cities (30k + residents) start around $20/hr, and in most places this is enough to live modestly as a single income family. We are conservative, union friendly, and love our guns and outdoors. We also have a decent police and fire pension system (age 50 with at least 15 years).

Im currently in school for law enforcement in Minnesota and our state standards are so high it keeps a lot of people from pursuing the career here. You have to have a minimum of a 2 year specialized Law Enforcement degree just to be eligible to take our POST test. But starting pay is usually around $60,000-$70,000/year. When it comes to standards and training requirements Minnesota by far is one of the highest in the county.

Also, look at long-term earning potential, not just the starting salary. Many agencies have a salary increase immediately upon graduating the academy, with further increases the subsequent year. For instance, our local sheriff's department has a starting salary of $17 an hour, with a pay raise to $25 an hour by the third year. Definitely a lucrative offer for our area.

I'm so glad you did this topic as a video man. In PA, it's a very mixed bag. There are so many little boroughs and townships and a lot of them require "act 120" (PA Version of Police Academy) up front; spending your own time and money to obtain it. Only a few departments such as the state police and the major cities will pay you to go to the academy.
A lot of people I know in the area spend a lot of time and money to get hired and never leave the area, hoping that connections will get them hired. I always mention to go out of state somewhere if they can afford to do so to have more opportunities. If I were pursuing law enforcement, I Would do the same.

I shoot with a few buddies from SFPD, and Bay Area officers typically eclipse north of $100k annually. But with the cost of living, the increasing crime, and lack of support from higher government to allow them to do their jobs, it doesn’t seem all that worth it. A few of them encouraged me to apply, but on my second time applying they simply told me to move out of state and find a place that would encompass and respect the law.
That being said, I’m moving out of here and pursuing a LEO career out of state, where I’m certain I’ll be happier, and where I get to work hand in hand with the community at large, even if I lose out on a a six figure income. Money means nothing if you aren’t happy.

    • @illAvized
      @illAvized 4 роки тому +1

@Frank O that would be nice to do that; however in my area within California finding an agency that pays 100k isn't possible without driving 2-3 hours away (SF). I personally commute 1.5 hours to pay 1500 for a 2 bed house instead of 2I for a apartment. That 1.5 hour commute is difficult especially after a 14 + hour day. But doing a few years at an agency with a much higher pay is absolutely the smartest move. You'd have to take into account if it is worth being unhappy for the extra money or if it's better to be happy with a much lower pay.
I wouldn't want to work for an agency for 200k a year if command staff doesn't have my back.

Money was the main concern amongst officers at the prison I worked at. I realized after just a few months that most officers find the easiest jobs with the least amount of work and get paid the same as hard working officers. The money became the thing I started to dislike. Fast forward a year and a half, I left my department. I joined a department in my home state where I make around the same with decent benefits. I will be working as a police officer out on the streets. The biggest draw for me was less pay for more fulfilling work. I have no problem working hard, I just hate monotony.

You also must look at what people do for living in that area. For Instance, in South East New Mexico, where I live, the vast majority of people work in the Oilfield and mining industries. There is other things but those are the main job producers. Police Agencies have to compete with that. One agency has a $25k sign-on bonus provided you work a certain number of years. But, the area has a relatively higher cost of living than the rest of the State. Take home vehicles are the norm. The plus side is that new officers (no certification) go to one of the best Police Academies in the State. The problem is, officers use the area as a stepping stone to better paying or better benefits agencies. You have to really enjoy Mesquites and desert-type living to be an officer here.

  • @300vision7

CA is the best because the amount OT you can make is usually unlimited in the bigger departments. I’ve heard of officers making $100k-$125k in their first year with a base pay of about $70k-$80k and if you want to make even more get a job doing private security you can easy make $50+ an hour. This is possible because most big departments offer 3/12 and 4/10 shifts so doing security on the side is easier and very lucrative. It might be expensive in LA but if you making $80k-$125k you can easily make it especially if you are single and if you have a family move one county over where houses are literally fraction of the price and commute is still under an hour.

In California If you work to your full retirement age, you can retire with 90% of your high 3. Make 100k a year you will have 90k for the rest of your life and amazing benefits. If you get on with CHP, mandatory retirement at 62 and free medical.
Now if you live in San Francisco that salary don't mean much, but if you work the rural areas, it does and you can take that pension out of state.

Peter Heid ive actually looked a lot into Alaska as a place to lateral too. The two big negatives are that: though you make a lot of money, housing and grocery cost are very high, offsetting the pay. The other big issue I have found is the vast majority of officers there work for the State Troopers, and in most of those places it means you do your job with literally zero back up ever. And it’s really freggin cold. But that’s just what I’ve researched never worked there.

When i was applying to police departments, I noticed that the pay rate seemed to be heavily correlated to the cost of living. For example Fairfax County VA starts their officers at 54k per year but when you compare that to the cost of living in the area, it's really not much better, if not worse, than a rural police department that only pays 30k a year.
If money is one of your deciding factors when choosing police departments, I would suggest doing a little bit of research on the cost of living in the surrounding areas and make a mock budget for yourself and see who comes out on top

You need to remember that cost of living is a major reason why for instance San Jose start out at about $100k, however, many officers can’t afford to live where they work and actually have to live in a fifth wheel during the work week and commute home on the weekends. I’d say State of Washington is a good place to work!

At 4:40 when you said "the number one top rated state to work in [as a cop] is New York, number two is Maryland, and number three is California." You literally named the top three most anti-cop states in America. With that in saying, I completely disagree with you (and wallet hub) on that final statement. Anyway I am a new subscriber and love all of your videos; be safe out there! :)

@Punk Rock J No they r not! No cop does it for the money, they do it to protect innocent people from evil criminals! The cost of living is higher in those states, so they get paid more. The stress level is going to be twice as high and morale is half of what it would be in the more pro cop (republican) states.

I think I'd rather work in GA or KY for $13/hr and be respected and liked by the locals, than work in CA or NY where I have to worry about getting buckets of piss dumped on me or be attacked by antifa. Sometimes money can't buy peace of mind. That plus, the cost of living in those higher paying states to me would be a no brainer.
Slightly off topic but does anyone else get legitimately mad when they see a cop being assaulted, knowing the cop won't be able to really do anything about it? I can't wait until this PC culture dies down.

While I didn’t get rich I did make captain and, w/my wife workin P/T, we saved enough to be comfortably retired in our old age. A good book is “The Millionaire Next Door” (forgot the author) but being careful to live w/i your means helps.
