How can you not like these kind of transformers? I think these droid looking ones are the coolest. It's boring having a humanoid looking transformers all the time.
it's alt mode is a fairly accurate representation of a an AH-1 twin cobra. that isn't a "thruster" on the back under the rotor, that's the exhaust stack for the turbine engines :) it's suppose to be there. that location reduces the "heat signature" and helps evade ground fired heat seeking missiles. you're welcome ;)
Whirl! Killer of Killmaster! (crushed his brain while recharging) Slayer of Imperious Drax! (leader of the Heroic Terradores) Instigator of the Cybertronian war! (he beat up Megatron in his cell teaching the soon to be murderer of TRILLIONS he'll need to use force to achieve his goals)
I really like this guy. His uniqueness and just different style is neat I think. I managed to pick this guy up for only $15 with a Hasbro sale on their website. Totally worth it!
Dude, after 6 years of having one, thanks @optibotimus for telling us about the shoulder ball joints that collapse in!!! Thanks, now my shoulders aren't loose no more!
I had him when I was a kid. And I must say he was one if my favorite toys. So needless to say I'm probably going to get this new mold. Thanks for the review!
The thruster isnt one, its the exaust of the turbine motor, so it doesnt project flames, it does release some very hot air, but since there is a giant fan over it...it has little to no effect on the near parts
Totally respected opinion but I am in love with this figure. Seeing him posed beside my Deluxe Orion Pax or my FoC Optimus Prime make him seem like a monstrous sentinel---a bodyguard if you will. And then posing him in a pitted fight against my Orion Pax Megatron? Ah, he's truly the perfect destroyer bot. Definitely a great addition to someone's collection who owns FoC Prime or Pax (primarily Pax).
This guy is awesome. G1 Whirl had also had all four weapons, the mono eye and ball jointed shoulders. Transformers Whirl and Roadbuster were both g1 wreckers that came from the same toy line Takatoku Dorvack Ovelon Gazzette. Check out a review of the G1 toy. This is a excellent update too the classic 80s toy
surprisingly whirl has quite the personality for looking like a drone. there was a machine they used in the comics that made human holograms of the cybertronian characters and the humans had their appearance based off of the personality of the bots and whirl got this psycho girl with pigtails, an eyepath and 2 guns. whirl is one of the most notorious characters in more than meets the eye although for some reason that's why people like him (have to be honest here but so do i)
This is actually rather nice figure dispite way it looks in robot mode. Besides having gearwalk mode is actually nice touch and adds play value alongside with all those weapon options.
Hey Paul! I greatly enjoy your reviews and would like to inform you that the landing things, not an aviation expert either, are the a apart of the clip system, and you can have his accessories on his side legs in robot and grr walk mode.
optibotimus in the g1 comics he was part of the wreckers i like this one and the g1 so fans say he is g1 shockwaves brother, really good review keep up the good work johndoe4880
The simple explanation of why he looks different is that the original Whirl didn't come from the Diaclone line like most of the other Autobots did. Diaclone figures were made to look more humanoid (despite also being manned mechs) while Whirl was supposed to be a traditional styled piloted mech. That's also why he comes with stickers instead of being tampographed, so you can have him in a collection of more traditional mecha and not be a Transformer.
I've been watching a lot of your reviews and I enjoy them a lot, the only complaint I have is the glaring white background that you've switched to for your reviews. Your other review for Windblade, her nosecone got lost in the white background. Would you consider perhaps something with less glare and light, perhaps a matte grey background?
Nice review. I wish I could find this guy and Rhinox in my local stores lol. I been looking forever with not luck. But about the fandom, you hit the nail right on the head. To rip someone a new A Hole just because of something they missed because its not in the directions in stupid. The fandom is what helped keep TF alive but it can also hurt when stuff like that happens. Anyway, nice review again, glad you did it. You just made me want the figure even more for my collection lol.
Not to overly crazy about the robot mode and that walking thing mode, but I do like the super cobra helo mode, after watching this review I'll grab him if he shows up at one of the usual stores.
I will respect the designers of this toy for keeping the modern version true to its original Bandai-mold roots. The G1 version didn't really fit in with the Hasbro and Takara bots available at the time, either. A toy honest to its roots and I can dig it. Then again, as much as I like the Has-Tak bot designs, I am a sucker for a bot that looks like a bot without pretense.
If I ever get him, and I might get him for Christmas, I will do the shoulders they way you showed it cause it looks better to me. Also, the legs on mine will be straightened cause I don't like the way his legs look. What I mean by that is, the chicken leg thing looks weird to me.
For the IDW verse, the reason Whirl (and even Shockwave) looks like that is because they went through empurata. Empurata is the act of taking away limbs and even faces to make them seem more 'droid-like' as you said in the video. For G1? No clue. They are just clampy-handed and one-eyed oddballs. Oh well. Still loving all the reviews and I agree with you as well, he... looks... weird. And I won't get him even if I enjoyed the character in the comics.
I like him, not to many good helicopter molds. I liked springers but it was a bit futuristic/cybertronian. Seen a little of him in the IDW seemed about as close to a decepticon as the autobots would get, I can see the appeal. He's no Thundercracker though.
I'm pretty sure you can logically say that the 'alternate' way of transforming the leg is the correct one. 1) It hides the thigh holes in robot mode. 2) The 'weird' toe actually matches his G1 toy more. 3) The 'chicken legs' match his 'gerwalk' mode better.
My dad had the original g1 make of this figure and eventually gave it too me i always thought he was funny looking but played with him anyway P.S. i love your videos
I wish they used the same tail transformation for Movie Voyager Blackout instead of having the entire helicopter tail hanging from his back. Maybe next time, with leader class Blackout :-)
Well i don't upload new videos every day. My schedule is posted on my website optibotimusreviews.com. Last week though, i took a bit of a vacation for the week
nice review dude, but i feel that transformer look to much like a robotech robot just there is no hands to grab things with. it's ok but it just feel like a bit off of robotech.
Well thanks for the science lesson, but i'm pretty sure people know what i'm talking about when i say "chicken leg look" and probably won't have any clue if i said it's a "digitigrade leg look"
Jango The Blue Fox well, plantigrade, and digitigrade terms are based on the fact that the species walk on the inner part of his hand/feet or on his fingers (gorillas are both for exemple) meaning its not especially related to the way the knee are articulated, even so i'm not sure that could apply for robots....
I liked how certain transformers looked with the "chicken leg" look. I'm just not digging it with this guy. When I get him, I'll probably transform it a little different.
It's because the original figure came from the toy line for "Special Armored Battalion Dorvack" which was a competing show of similar style. I just love that they had 2 Dorvack figures (Roadbuster was the other one) AND a Macross figure (Jetstorm) in the same toy line over here. :-)
Even though I have seen previews of TF IDW comics, I have seen Whirl. I just hate, that some bonehead forgot to add shoulder can be pushed. Sometimes I think, Hasbro is running by boneheads. Over all, I like this toy.
How can you not like these kind of transformers? I think these droid looking ones are the coolest. It's boring having a humanoid looking transformers all the time.
Yeah I personally love whirl
Saw him in Cyberverse, became my second favorite.
it's alt mode is a fairly accurate representation of a an AH-1 twin cobra. that isn't a "thruster" on the back under the rotor, that's the exhaust stack for the turbine engines :) it's suppose to be there. that location reduces the "heat signature" and helps evade ground fired heat seeking missiles. you're welcome ;)
phoenix4flame I know his helicopter mode
i love his droidish robot look, very cool second mode, Metal Gear Solid look to it
Whirl!
Killer of Killmaster! (crushed his brain while recharging)
Slayer of Imperious Drax! (leader of the Heroic Terradores)
Instigator of the Cybertronian war! (he beat up Megatron in his cell teaching the soon to be murderer of TRILLIONS he'll need to use force to achieve his goals)
Man! What a gorgeous figure! The colors, the size and design of both modes are just incredible.
Awesome review.
Uniqueness on fleek. I love the gerwalk mode. It looks like a walking turret.
The "Thruster" location on Whirl's Alternate Form (A Bell Super Cobra Attack Helicopter) is correct.
Ahaha! At 9:42, all I could think of was, "Please put down your weapon. You have 20 seconds to comply!"
This guy is really cool. I dig how unique he is, and the insane amount of weaponry
I really like this guy. His uniqueness and just different style is neat I think. I managed to pick this guy up for only $15 with a Hasbro sale on their website. Totally worth it!

I like him because he is a heavily armed Autobot, and a helicopter. It is icing on the cake that IDW Comics has given him some character.
His alt mode is based on a AH-1 Cobra gunship, which is why he has the exhaust positioned where it is.
I laughed at the "Landing Sequence" sounds... :P
But I like this guy, got him and Rhinox yesterday, waiting for they to arrive on the mail...
The thruster isnt one, its the exaust of the turbine motor, so it doesnt project flames, it does release some very hot air, but since there is a giant fan over it...it has little to no effect on the near parts

Do you plan on reviewing the Huffer figure?
Hey Paul! I greatly enjoy your reviews and would like to inform you that the landing things, not an aviation expert either, are the a apart of the clip system, and you can have his accessories on his side legs in robot and grr walk mode.

Shockwaves little brother.
I believe that part you are looking at is the exhaust of the main propeller not a jet engine. that's at least what it looks to be to me
I've been watching a lot of your reviews and I enjoy them a lot, the only complaint I have is the glaring white background that you've switched to for your reviews. I loved Whirl in the G1 movie, I laughed so much whenever he talked.
vvolt Whirl wasn't in the Movie. He was only in the Comics.
Megamanlanprime Whoops. For a sec, i thought he was a redesign of someone else for some reason.
Nice review. I wish I could find this guy and Rhinox in my local stores lol. I been looking forever with not luck. But about the fandom, you hit the nail right on the head. you can improve the Walker modern by takeing the arms and folding them up to make MISSLE launchers
Not to overly crazy about the robot mode and that walking thing mode, but I do like the super cobra helo mode, after watching this review I'll grab him if he shows up at one of the usual stores.
Also u can move the intanna thing near his head and u can move it to do something cool
The "Girwalk Mode" reminds me of the Mantis Mech from Halo 4
Before Optimus Primal coined the phrase "some times crazy works" Whirl was the bot who lived it!
I will respect the designers of this toy for keeping the modern version true to its original Bandai-mold roots. I really like whirl and I'm glad he got an awesome figure, so I'll probably get him.
A lot of helicopters today are powered be jet engines, so that black part is the exhaust port.
To words relating to his gerwalk mode: Pacific Rim.
Sorry, Two*
I can hear the TFA Shockwave stans salivating
For the IDW verse, the reason Whirl (and even Shockwave) looks like that is because they went through empurata. Nice figure, however what the bio on the package doesn't say is that whirl is actually insane.
I think they were trying to do a omage to robotech which inspired transformers
Wow. If I didn't know he was from the IDW comic I would have said he has to be from some new Macross anime set in the time-frame of the original.
i cannot figure out for the life of me, how to do the "pushes in" part of the arm on the bot mode of this figure
Apparently in the IDW comics he originally did have hands... not sure what happened to them
Love Whirl. Great fig.
I like him, not to many good helicopter molds. I liked springers but it was a bit futuristic/cybertronian. Seen a little of him in the IDW seemed about as close to a decepticon as the autobots would get, I can see the appeal. He's no Thundercracker though.

2) The 'weird' toe actually matches his G1 toy more.
3) The 'chicken legs' match his 'gerwalk' mode better.
Yeap. I realized that once I started reading the IDW comics.
Maybe they engineered the legs that way so you could put him in a G1 mode? Maybe?
Did u no there were clip points on his sled bits on his legs
man he is like a transformer master
My dad had the original g1 make of this figure and eventually gave it too me i always thought he was funny looking but played with him anyway P.S. i love your videos

look its ED-209
How come I don't see many more new videos from you anymore? I used to watch you every day, and it was great! But now...
Well i don't upload new videos every day. My schedule is posted on my website optibotimusreviews.com. Last week though, i took a bit of a vacation for the week
Ah, ok! Thanks for being considerate enough to reply :)
+optibotimus how come wirl is weird looking
So it's like a robotech figure in guardian/gerwalk mode
Is it possible to switch only the thighs from one side to the other? Maybe doing so you could fix the hollow thigh thing...
nop, if you do then the hollow side will show up in alt mode
The head and body style reminds me of transformers animated Shockwave
I like his look. But I like tall lanky sleek looks for decepticons instead.
aren't robots supposed to not look like humans in the first place? I think the bike sisters and whirl represent a robot very well in my opinion.
how come there was never any size comparison to any other transformer toys
In the idw comics, he is the reason megatron is the way he is.
7:33 its kinda hard to melt cybertronian alloy
i wish i could get this but they are hard to find in canada
i want to get it but can find it in canada oh well
This guy looks boss, love it!
its not a thruster its a turbine outlet . big muffler pipe
this has nothing to do with this toy, but has he already said who won the iron man bust set?
he looks like the robot from the old rare anime Fang of the Sun Dougram
I realy like your review
there's also a shock wave version..
The head reminds me a lot of animated shockwave
Look at Whirl's face! It looks like he's..... I don't even know what his expression is right now.
He does not even have a mouth.;-)
nice review dude, but i feel that transformer look to much like a robotech robot just there is no hands to grab things with. it's ok but it just feel like a bit off of robotech.
the heloped mode looks a lot like a helicopter version of robotech
you say weird i say EPIC
the other big thing cant attach to the other hand?
for future reference they are called digitigrade legs.
umm what?
***** humans have plantigrade legs, animals have digitigrade legs.
Well thanks for the science lesson, but i'm pretty sure people know what i'm talking about when i say "chicken leg look" and probably won't have any clue if i said it's a "digitigrade leg look"
***** actually they would. use the proper terms please.
Jango The Blue Fox
well, plantigrade, and digitigrade terms are based on the fact that the species walk on the inner part of his hand/feet or on his fingers (gorillas are both for exemple) meaning its not especially related to the way the knee are articulated, even so i'm not sure that could apply for robots....
Why is it that all of my favorite transformers have monocles?
I prefer swiveling the legs for a standard knee bend.
Helioped mode, whatever you call it, I call it ROBOTECH MODE!!!
Even though this looks nothing like the IDW comic version but It looks a bit like the G1 version. But I still am probably going to buy this anyway.
I really dislike the arm pincer things.
why u not wanna review dark guard optimus prime ? just asking
I hope stickers aren't the new standard
Helicopter looks like an AH-1 Cobra
I want ninjago to last 30 years and be on.
has a rotf vibe to him
whirl is awesome
I turned the legs around on mine, he walks like people lol
Same man xD
THE CLAWS! BEWARE THE CLAWS!!!
Exhaust not a thruster
I liked how certain transformers looked with the "chicken leg" look. I'm just not digging it with this guy. When I get him, I'll probably transform it a little different.
love it
"Wreck and rule!!!"
Any else think this is macross's and tranformers love child but I still love it I'm getting it
It's because the original figure came from the toy line for "Special Armored Battalion Dorvack" which was a competing show of similar style. I just love that they had 2 Dorvack figures (Roadbuster was the other one) AND a Macross figure (Jetstorm) in the same toy line over here. :-)
Pimptimus holy shit, now you mentioned it. i watched this thing back in the VHS craze era. insane seeing something this old appearing now
I got the ed vibe myself from it
Even though I have seen previews of TF IDW comics, I have seen Whirl. I just hate, that some bonehead forgot to add shoulder can be pushed. Sometimes I think, Hasbro is running by boneheads. Over all, I like this toy.
Engine Exhaust
I regret buying Sandstorm over this guy.
Reminds me of Robotech.
