@@saturncrush may i ask, why does whirl or shockwave have one eye, is it something thats important or simply just because they were protoformed differently.
@@Stop_This_Madness Something IDW brought to canon was a punishment of sorts for certain circumstances. Removing one’s original head and replacing it with the one eye as well as removing a hand or hands and replacing them with a non digit.
To this day I will believe that the picture is RA Whirl’s and the G1/IDW Whirl is her guardian/parent figure. It’s just kind of amazing thinking of lines for him being protective and trying to teach good life lessons to the lil’ chopper.
G1 Whirl is a forgotten toy who didn’t get much time to shine, IDW Whirl was a psychopath you felt sorry for and cried for, Rescue Bots Whirl was the precious bestie of the team, Cyberverse Whirl was an optimistic flyer, Every other Whirl just exists, A bot of so many faces, it’s no wonder why this bot was so crazy.
I had Whirl as a kid. I never read tech specs or anything, so the story I made up for him as a kid was that he was Shockwave's brother (because of the mono-eye), and that Shockwave hated Whirl because he could fly, whereas Shockwave couldn't really do much in gun form. I don't even think I called him "Whirl".
I do have the Thrilling 30th Whirl. Not a bad toy, though I know many wish for a more IDW-inspired figure that isn't the Mastermind creations figure. Still, good video on Whirl.
My favourite version has been the Cyberverse version ..and his "oned-step" toy from that series is one of the most satisfying of that type of toy. ...I like that he seems to either be a bit of a wally or just really unlucky as well as being a brave warrior, he is a really lovable character in that amazing series (Cyberverse is one of the best modern versions of Transformers, in terms of quality, storyline, pace, action and fun it it leaves Netflix's WFC series looking dull, boring and weak. I would easily put it up with things like Animated).
Ah, back when Transformers toys used the word 'deluxe' correctly! The original bio gets me wondering whether it was influenced at all by Murdoch from the A-Team - someone who plays up his own madness for effect rather than someone who is utterly consumed by it.
Yeah, but you could argue they also were of greater quality than the rest of the line, so it fit. More, certainly, than to just refer to a size which is pretty much the 'regular serving size' of Transformers today.
It also made sense in the toylines where there was a Basic-class figure below the Deluxe-class. I think Beast Wars did that, with the next one up being Mega and then Super? Armada had a similar system. Seems like Deluxe is the only term that's been used universally across the franchise. Sometimes making sense, other times not.
I guess it depends on what you regard as the 'standard' size. If that standard is at the smaller end - like scout class - then it could make sense that a size bigger than it is 'deluxe' but, I still would prefer if the term was used to mean something like 'premium'. But, I'm just fussy about these things. I also have problems with 'leader class' as, often, characters given that size are not overall leaders, but rather the powerful side-kicks of leaders.
I could listen to Chris say “Hwurl” all day. As an American southerner who’s used to everybody sounding like country bumpkins, something about your accent makes these videos that much more appealing to watch. Sometimes I just have them on in the background while I’m doing other things, lol. Just to have something for my brain to latch onto and focus on. Cheers from the US, my man!
With everything in mind and reading up on a lot of Whirl lore, I have a fun idea for a potential incarnation for them in a continuity: That of basically a robot version of the holomatter avatar combined with the IDW incarnation and Rescue Bot incarnation that's pretty much just Tiny Tina from Borderlands mixed with Jinx from League of legends, Izzy from Total Drama, and Max from Sam & Max. With a hint of Mabel Pines from Gravity Falls. AKA, a super-energetic, silly and psychotic little (12 to 13 years old in Cybertronian years) femme bot with an eyepatch, a helmet with goggles that have a broken lense, a MASSIVE overactive imagination, a crazy grin 24/7, and a *LOVE* for chaos, fun, excitement, and explosions. Also, she's supposed to be a pilot, but since it's Whirl, you can expect calling her a "pilot" to be like calling Ace Ventura a "driver." And before you ask about the lack of Empurata, she'll get in at some point and look like a little girl version of IDW Whirl.
I just like the name. It’s a great name. It was also a welcome surprise to see him in Cyberverse. Even if the show was lacking, it definitely put rare or even obscure characters in the spotlight. Like Rack N Ruin, Cosmos, Alpha Strike (Strika), and even Tarn’s design fittingly for the perfect Decepticons.
0:26, in memory of Hiromi Tsuru who voiced Ovellon Gazette/Whirl's pilot - Louise Ovellon whom her voice also ranges from Yoko from Leda - Fantastic Adventure of Yohko and Bulma from Dragonball. Didn't think the IDW Whirl an' Rescue Bots Whirl were two different characters. So IDW exists in that universe too,eh? 9:03,Whirl in Cyberverse is like a nice guy compared to his insane self in the comics.
First time I was introduced to Whirl was when my son (who loves Transformers or bots as he calls them) started watching the Rescue Bots Academy and we met a female version of Whirl. So seeing this backstory here is pretty nice. My son also has the Cyberverse Whirl. Keep up the good work man!
In my head, Whirl has always been the Deadpool of that universe. After the Deadpool movie, I now read his dialog in the comics in Ryan Reynolds’s voice.
Whirl became a good character after getting fleshed out a bit. Makes me wonder what could become of other lesser known bots like Outback, Pipes, or even my favorites tyre Terrorcons of they were shown some attention. Chris, I challenge you to create an episode on the process introduced by which Whirl and Shockwave got their heads and hands removed and replaced.
As a guy who grew up (from like 8 to the ripe old age of 10 years old!) with the original cartoons and toys and skipped most everything else, this videos are so fascinating! I have to watch them all!!
I'd love to see you do a segment on the more humanoid vs the less humanoid bots. It's an interesting inversion how Optimus originally didn't have a mouth, but then they gave him one in later incarnations to more humanize him...
My favorite whirl is the first live action incarnation, as that’s one of my first transformers toys. Fond memories of that figure. I still have him too
Great video detailing this bots history. I always wanted one back in the 80's but he was hard to find at Toys r Us. But after years and collecting again I got one off of Ebay about 2 years ago (G1 along with Roadmaster and both in boxes!!). Keep these videos coming bro they make my Saturday mornings EPIC.
I never knew about this particular autobot even when he has such unique desing instead just recolors. Not gonna lie he looks very creepy giving Shockwave vibes with his single eye. Whirl has sure claimed himself and herself fitting place in transformers multiverse.
I feel as if Rescue bots academy (if it didn't get canceled) would have an episode addressing The original Whirl vs The Rescue bot version with maybe a reveal that Whirl the rescue bot being nervous meeting or talking to Whirl the Wrecker as maybe its like the wrecker whirl trying to cheer Rescue bot whirl in the academy but embarrassing the rescue bot whirl at every turn.
I remember stumbling across a piece of fanart of IDW Whirl introducing the RBA Whirl as his sister and telling us to "play nice" with her and for the life of me, I can't find that artwork again. Has anyone else came across this or am I being crazier than the Wrecker?
Well this was fascinating. I recently found out that the entire “Special Armored Battalion Dorvack” is on UA-cam and I intend to start watching it tonight.
Man I love Transformers! For years I've known nothing about Whirl other than he was a 2nd or 3rd year Transformer of G1. This video finally opened my eyes to the wonderful writing and characterization that can be put into a robot to make him truly unique from the hundreds there are. Now all I want is a WFC Trilogy level figure cuz he is AWESOME and tragic at the same time, and the misjudgment of his license determining his fate in media is just as romantic. He is now easily one of my favorite bots!
I do like how rescue bots academy still kept some of the design cues from the original. The colors, the alt mode, and even her visor kind of re creates the famous mono eye
I love the IDW and Rescue Bots versions of Whirl, and I've decided to include both in my Transformers fanfiction stories as separate characters, with a familial connection, and give the Rescue Bot a new name.
I used the name Birl for RBA whirl and it's stuck to me ever since. (I use thesaurus to change my words, as a carry over from when I used the dame😢for beyblade parts)
Whirl is SO F**KIN SICK in IDW comics, holy sh*t dude he's one of their greatest, most important and iconic characters. I havent finished watching yet but I hope this Basics episode covers that
You have to admit the Recue Bots Whirl in some ways is like the original Whirl of being the energetic and overly enthusiastic risk taker of the team. She may be a different character but she has the spirit.
I like the idea of Ruination being the Autobot version of Bruticus with the arms and legs switch, giving him more mobility and firepower at the cost of being much more frail.
G1 Whirl and Roadbuster were great toys. I still have both of mine, and they're in relatively good condition since they didn't get overly used. My friends and I would pool our collective toys together when we played with them but I was the only one that used those two -- being absent from the cartoon really hurt their popularity. Great video Chris, I'm giving my toy a big high five...... well, a high claw anyway.
I’m just imagining RB whirl being the adoptive daughter of the whirl from the cybertron games (since they technically exist in the same continuity) But I’d say aligned whirl would have been just as screwed in the head as the IDW one. And I’m just imagining some sort of “parents day” at the academy where whirl jr (as I’ll call rescue bots whirl) is talking about how fun and nice her dad is. While whirl Sr. Chuckles to himself thinking “oh man, she has NO idea all the terrible scrap I’ve done”
Ok what if…We combined both characters? A cadet who genuinely thought the cybertronian police force was just and pure, until she came face to face with the corruption that plagued the planet, paying a terrible price in the process. When the war broke out she joined the Autobots out of respect for Optimus Prime (most of it due to his speech at the high council) It was her friendship with the Wreckers, and her newfound hobby of watchmaking that kept her sane both during and after the war. However bits and pieces of madness always leaks out whether I’d be for her incessant fidgeting or her sudden ramblings.

IDW Whirl has trauma , Rescue Bots Academy Whirl has spunk and cuteness .I see a duo movie coming up .
I love the irony of RBA Whirl being a future police officer considering the usual trouble Whirl has with authority.
Whirl: don't be like papa be good to the police.
I haven't read much about the IDW comics. But I do like whirl's design in idw, cyberverse and rescue bots academy. I wonder if alex hirsh would be perfect to voice whirl
Type in Bill Cypher is Whirl on UA-cam
I did and it's not so bad maybe in the next transformers series alex hirsh will be voice of whirl or ratchet or dropkick
I think the guy who voiced Cyclonus in Armada would also be a good fit for whirl, since he was also a crazy bot who transformed into a helicopter.
@@TheDaxter11 and for g1/idw cyclonus I think Kevin Conroy would be perfect as cyclonus
For whirl i would definitely get alex hirsh or the beatle juice on broadway guy. I could also see rob paulsen or josh keaton working
🤔😳 So Whirl is technically a major part in why the war started. Damn McFeely you always blow my mind.
Yep. The Senate's use of Empurata as a way of control gave Megatron all the justification he needed to start the war. You can't get rid of a practice like that (or Shadowplay by Senate order, as in the case of Shockwave) by asking nicely.
Man, I've never had a good reason to actually still be awake at 5AM before
Yes!! the basics on whirl!!! RBA whirl is definitely no doubt my favorite incarnation She's so adorable and sweet, not just to mention the adorable relationship she had with the other bots, so adorable. Also what I love most about her is she has a thing on hotshot obviously she has huge crush on him. Please do a basics on hotshot, Would love to see it
Ah yes. I thought I find you here. Nice new channel profile picture btw
@@KTWhatsup Thanks, just got it
I never got the impression that she and Hotshot have a thing. They giving me sibling vibes to me. But that’s my opinion.
So we all agree Whirl is best dad, not just to Lil Whirl, but also to the Scraplets?
Huh, I thought Shockwave was the only Cybertronian with a mono-eye head design, but the Autobots have one on their side as well.
They explained the whole process in the IDW comic. Really cool.
@@saturncrush actually makes me wonder if Whirl and Shockwave ever sympathized with each other at all during the comics.

I find it funny that Rescue Bots Whirl seems to be the exact opposite of his IDW incarnation.
Rescue bots whirl is a girl.
To this day I will believe that the picture is RA Whirl’s and the G1/IDW Whirl is her guardian/parent figure. It’s just kind of amazing thinking of lines for him being protective and trying to teach good life lessons to the lil’ chopper.
The Basics videos are another reason for me to look forward to the weekends. Thank you Chris for your awesome content!
G1 Whirl is a forgotten toy who didn’t get much time to shine,
IDW Whirl was a psychopath you felt sorry for and cried for,
Rescue Bots Whirl was the precious bestie of the team,
Cyberverse Whirl was an optimistic flyer,
Every other Whirl just exists,
A bot of so many faces, it’s no wonder why this bot was so crazy.
I love Phelous's description of Whirl in one of his Transformers videos as "Shockwave's Ski-Lovin' Autobot Brother". 😁
I do have the Thrilling 30th Whirl. Not a bad toy, though I know many wish for a more IDW-inspired figure that isn't the Mastermind creations figure. Still, good video on Whirl.
I just looked at the mastermind one
Too many fingers I don't see how he even looks like idw whirl tbh
@@dungeonsanddragonsbutformo9835 It's pre MTMTE Whirl. Whirl looked a lot more like his G1 self in IDW before MTMTE

I love Whirl’s robotic design and unhinged personality. He’s almost like the Autobot mirror-Shockwave.
Yeah his eye the same as shockwave's, and he's a psycho
Everyone's got a Transformer they'll ride and die for, and mine's Whirl. He looks cool, he acts cooler, and never ceases to entertain us.
You know, if IDW ever got a show, I think Armada Cyclonus's voice actor would be a good fit for Whirl.
I picture him with a Bender-like voice
i think more of bill cipher or ryan renolds
Ngl, it'll be hilarious to hear what's more or less two Cyclonuses bickering and having a weird, heartwarming friendship

I always heard Eddy's voice from E,E,&E
I’ve been waiting for this episode for so long I never thought it would ever happen
Man it made me tear up a bit seeing the IDW Whirl with the Rescue Bots one. Maybe made him think what it would be like if that horror hadn't happened.
Rescue Bots Whirl is an adorable child and must be protected.
Indeed
She sure is
My favourite version has been the Cyberverse version ..and his "oned-step" toy from that series is one of the most satisfying of that type of toy. ...I like that he seems to either be a bit of a wally or just really unlucky as well as being a brave warrior, he is a really lovable character in that amazing series (Cyberverse is one of the best modern versions of Transformers, in terms of quality, storyline, pace, action and fun it it leaves Netflix's WFC series looking dull, boring and weak. I would easily put it up with things like Animated).
Cyberverse doesn't get nearly enough love and respect, it's such a good show. I haven't enjoyed a TF cartoon as much *since* Animated, truth be told.
omg thank you so much for this, whirl is one of my favourite characters from idw
My favourite Transformers character! Whirl’s incarnation in IDW was the most loved bot in the entire series for me
Ah, back when Transformers toys used the word 'deluxe' correctly!
The original bio gets me wondering whether it was influenced at all by Murdoch from the A-Team - someone who plays up his own madness for effect rather than someone who is utterly consumed by it.
"Deluxe" in G1 just meant "licensed from Bandai" lmao. Deluxe vehicles, Deluxe Insecticons, etc.
@@originaluddite Well that’s the thing, the name has nothing to do with quality or role. It’s just scale.
With everything in mind and reading up on a lot of Whirl lore, I have a fun idea for a potential incarnation for them in a continuity:
That of basically a robot version of the holomatter avatar combined with the IDW incarnation and Rescue Bot incarnation that's pretty much just Tiny Tina from Borderlands mixed with Jinx from League of legends, Izzy from Total Drama, and Max from Sam & Max.
Also, she's supposed to be a pilot, but since it's Whirl, you can expect calling her a "pilot" to be like calling Ace Ventura a "driver."
And before you ask about the lack of Empurata, she'll get in at some point and look like a little girl version of IDW Whirl.
I always picture G1 Whirl and Rescue bots Whirl as father and daughter.
Whirl is a Wrecker, a great friend, and one of my favorite Autobots.
Little did we know he was a father too!
Glad to see you decided to give this one a whirl!
Finally. My favourite Transformer character got a video. Thanks so much. :)
The early design for Rescue Bots Academy looks like a combination of every version of the character, but with a mouth.
And with hands.
And a normal head

As a guy who grew up (from like 8 to the ripe old age of 10 years old!) with the original cartoons and toys and skipped most everything else, this videos are so fascinating! I have to watch them all!!
I'd love to see you do a segment on the more humanoid vs the less humanoid bots. It's an interesting inversion how Optimus originally didn't have a mouth, but then they gave him one in later incarnations to more humanize him...
My favorite whirl is the first live action incarnation, as that’s one of my first transformers toys. Fond memories of that figure. I still have him too
Noice
In the IDW comics, Whirl got to use the catchphrase of another famous robot. Bender from Futurama.
Bite my shiny metal ass!
Well this was fascinating. I recently found out that the entire “Special Armored Battalion Dorvack” is on UA-cam and I intend to start watching it tonight.
In my Transformers fanfiction, I'm definitely including the Wrecker Whirl as one of the characters.
I loved Whirl in IDW, and it really freaked me out when my kids watched Rescue Bots Academy. Lol.
My head canon is that RB Whirl and Wrecker Whirl are related in some way, either mentor and protege or family in some way, with her named after him.
Imagine Whirl and Shockwave getting into a staring contest.
They both have Wounds by the same factor
I do like how rescue bots academy still kept some of the design cues from the original. The colors, the alt mode, and even her visor kind of re creates the famous mono eye
Expect being a different shade of blue. She somewhat resemble the other Whirl.
In hindsight, I’m glad he’s getting more exposure. My favorite versions are the IDW and Cyberverse incarnations.
8:50 similar to how Medix is Ratchet's nephew they're is a theory saying that the Rescue Bots Whirl is the Daughter of the Original Whirl
Love whirl! I'd love to see him featured in more stuff too! I really liked him in cyberverse! The rescue bot whirl is adorable!
I'm always discovering new stuff about my childhood franchise in here! Well done!!
Absolutely loved this one! Whirl makes me deliriously happy.
yea same I was first introduced to the character of whirl in the cybercerse cartoon then later I then found out about him in the idw stories
I’m just imagining RB whirl being the adoptive daughter of the whirl from the cybertron games (since they technically exist in the same continuity)
But I’d say aligned whirl would have been just as screwed in the head as the IDW one.
God I wish he would say something like ‘let’s give it a whirl’ when someone else comes up with a crazy plan
That would be awesome
Ok what if…We combined both characters?
A cadet who genuinely thought the cybertronian police force was just and pure, until she came face to face with the corruption that plagued the planet, paying a terrible price in the process.
When the war broke out she joined the Autobots out of respect for Optimus Prime (most of it due to his speech at the high council)
It was her friendship with the Wreckers, and her newfound hobby of watchmaking that kept her sane both during and after the war.
However bits and pieces of madness always leaks out whether I’d be for her incessant fidgeting or her sudden ramblings.
Interesting.
