I had a hydraulic line fail in my 2001 Viggen last year, and we cleaned it all up, but decided not to tackle the job of replacing the line since it was late October, and I wasn’t planning to put the top down again until the spring. Hearing you say how easy the repair is gives me hope! I live in the New Orleans (Louisiana) area, so the heat from the constant sunlight really has caused the lines to deteriorate - there’s always “dust” on the tonneau from the lines, and I knew that failure was inevitable.
I have a lot of trouble finding shops that know how to work on Saabs, and I’ve even had more than a few places say that they couldn’t drive my car up onto their lift, because there wasn’t enough ground clearance (~9 inches) to do so. There is only ONE mechanic who will (competently) work on Saabs that I’m aware of in the entire metropolitan area. Those of you who live in the northeast USA - where I hear there are lots of Saab mechanics to this day - are extremely fortunate.

Hi kyle, I had same hose popped off like yours did on my 03 vert. Hydraulic hose protective outter skin kinda rotted off so it was literally pulled apart by activating the top. And since near by my work had this crimping machine( which crimp down to 6mm or 0.25inch). That white plastic tube is almost that size, so I put shrink tube over it and gave heat to shrink then I squeeze in the adopter that was apart and crimped it and worked for last 3~4 years until a month ago.
This time, I just decided to buy a new hose and replace it, expected it to be damaged, but found hose was still in place, but o-ring inside was missing that made a leak....so this was my experience. That was 'G' hose I think you need to get.

Were the roof hinges regularly lubricated ? On mine, I noticed that the roof folds more quickly when hinges are lubricated ----> less stress on the hydraulics.

Yep, I think I gotta do that.

Owned an NG for several years from 140k-200k, and used the hell out of the top. Basically if dry and above 30 degrees F, the top was going down baby!! Only issue I had was Rear deck rams leaking around 190k, which is easy to replace. The tubes in the NG are a lot tougher as well. So far my Vig has not been a problem for a year now, 76k-90k so far.
Honestly though, it is more about how much you want to enjoy driving, so taking that into consideration, Saabs are likely pretty cheap vert-enjoyment compared to other brands.
Few others look as nice for 10x the price.

As I wrote above, getting the top fixed was the cost of a cheap vacation. And like you said, I use the top above 60F April-Nov here in NE, and almost every sunny day in SoCal.

@@laurat1129 that is a cheap investment for years of enjoyment! I have yet to replace mine, and might get a few more garaged years yet, but will not even flinch when it is time. Soooooo worth it.

Thanks for the videos. You've been a great help with both my silver 2002 Saab 9-5 and my sun green metallic 2002 Saab 9-3 convertible. Hope I can get my top sorted by spring and have the convertible out for this summer

Hey Kyle, I have a 2000 93 convertible that I am getting back on the road. Not the greatest shape but the body is good. My top I have to put up and down manually. Look forward to learning more from your videos.

I had a new 89 turbo. Something was not working all the time. Head lights, Power antennas, Power windows, Cruise control. Things that had been in automobiles for decades. I remember selling the car after 2 years and the glove box binder had 23 invoices of repairs in 24 months of ownership. The first person to come look at the car saw repair list and bought it anyway. Blew me away. One of the worst cars I ever own sold really fast. I got allot of calls for the car after it was gone. I got really good money for it too. So glad to see that car Go. I drove Honda SI's for about 20 years after the Saab Turbo.

You saw my 1998 900 briefly at that Chicago meet a while back. Still going strong - had a couple odd electric grounding problems but absolutely bullet proof otherwise. Mine's done over 20k miles since I bought it in 2020 with only minor issues.

It must be mercury retrograde b/c my '99 9-3 just got a "soft-top failure" today, fortunately after the heatwave. The roof broke in 2017, so I finally got all 5 new pistons last summer, my only joy during the pandemic, and I do keep the top down April-Nov. Hopefully now, it's just one of those lil' IKEA pins, or as someone said here, hinges need lube, or roof needs recalibration? We'll see on Monday...

@@KylePancis Yep, it needs new hydraulic line/hose. The CV's a messy job, also requires some synchronization.
