The Entire History of Le Mans

- Опубліковано 15 чер 2023
- The 2023 calendar year marked the Centenary race of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, that race just concluding on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of June. Le Mans is one of the biggest races in the world, taking place at the famed Circuit de la Sarthe in France, and now they’ve got over 100 years of racing in the history books.
With such an incredible history, it’s not uncommon to see this venue and event pop up in different forms of entertainment. In racing video games, there aren’t too many simulation titles that doesn’t have the track in some shape or form. iRacing, Assetto Corsa, rFactor 2, Gran Turismo 7, and just recently, Forza Motorsport announced that it will be included when that releases later in 2023.
That’s great for all of us, especially for John Munro, our host through all of the Le Mans history lesson today. John’s unique method is to explain the race through racing on the various games and simulators that have the different eras, different tracks, and different racing machines that took to the course.
This is a combination of all parts of the previous video releases on the History of Le Mans. Our four-part series has been combined into one feature length film, presented above. If you’ve watched it before, you’ll know it’s worth watching again.
Grab a snack and tune in for the full story. Starting all the way back from the inaugural running of the event through today’s day and age, explained through video games, what more is there to ask for? Enjoy the feature and as always, keep it pinned.
A special thanks to Motorsport TV for all of the archive footage, and to Motorsport Images for the archive photos!

Le Mans is 100 years old? That's awesome! I still have a dream to see the race live on the track
Im going there every year and I hope for you to see this amazing race !
Yep it’s amazing!
The Nürburgring Nordschleife has its 100th birthday in 2027!
@@rolux4853 oh my i gotta go to that
Fantastic video, obviously a team of dedicated people there, really respect your work 👍
Much appreciated, your comment means a lot!
I only got into Motorsport a year ago, but discovering the 911 RSR and the 919 really pulled me into the magic of endurance racing and Le Mans…the centennial race was my first and it didn’t dissapoint
This doesn't have enough views, incredible content. Would we see a video on the Can-Am Series in the future?
Really glad you enjoyed it! Will look into that for sure. 🙂 - John
My favorite Le Mans car is actually one that never won overall, and barely won in its home series.
The Panoz LMP-1 open top, massive V8 in the front, with aggressive style. Wish it won a bit more than it did, but It was one of the few cars that actually took the fight to Audi and won
It’s absolutely mega! I remember watching the early ALMS days on UA-cam, and that car showing up at Road Atlanta was just incredible 😍 Have to love the unique underdogs with big personality
Excellent job in relating LeMans to sim racing. Being able to get a glimpse of what it’s like to drive these amazing machines is amazing.
This was so well documented, i really enjoyed watching this thank you , absolutely great content :) !
The R8 was so good that any damage to the rear of the car would prompt the team to change the whole back. The best Le Mans winner ever.
It was incredible!
Great job! I love Le Mans so much
This message is from the future. Ferrari won the 2023 Le Man meaning Toyota’s streak of never winning against factory teams continues.
Ferrari just won yesterday, again!
A very enjoyable video. Thank you for your immense effort and vision in putting this together. Subscribed!
Much appreciated! Welcome to the paddock 😊🙌
Outstanding content. I would love to see more of these. BTCC, DTM, V8supercar...
Great video man, you've got your own style and do a great job presenting. I watched the whole thing, which is rare lol.
Outstanding, thanks.
Great job mate 👏🏻
Good job bro, nice documentary

Hope you enjoy!
@@TraxionGG really nice docu! Now I want to do all available era in VR play. For the fun! 😍
I always wondered why doc was my favorite car in the cars series, now I know why
This was so well-made, can’t believe this doesn’t have more views
great content here, hope you guys start focusing on real life motor sports history more.
This was awesome! though I wish you raced some of those early 20s/30s/40s cars too that woulda been great to see!
amazing video, but whats a 'pew-joe' ?
What about "porsh"?
i remember that playstation game. we rented it over the weekend and were totally blasted that it had an actual 24h mode, which we tackled. those were the times (:
Awesome video. I love Le Mans.

The Holy Grail of auto racing
Great Video love from Germany
But its PorschE not Porcheeieiei
BMW purely entered Le Mans to prep for they're F1 return, as awesome as the Audi R8 was, the competition was awful!! Just Cadilac, & Panoz. Audi had joined just as Mercedes, Toyota, Porsche, BMW, & Mclaren had left, the 1999 R8's (open & coupe) where much slower.
Audi finished 3rd and 4th at its debut in 1999, against much experienced teams by Toyota, Nissan, BMW and Mercedes. Those teams would be no match for the R8.
From 1999 to 2016, any Audi run by the Joest team never retired at Le Mans with mechanical problems. Never. And more, an Audi LMP car has never retired from any race with a engine problem. Audi was on another league. Not even Porsche was so impressive.
@@ederss7 I'm not disputing Audi's brilliance, however both BMW & Toyota where on F1 prep, the Mercedes CLR LM was the last stab of the CLK GTR which DNF'd in 1998, & of course lost 1 car on morning warm up, Nissan have NEVER won Le Mans, which means Audi ONLY beat Peugeot between 2000 & 2011, I'm not counting Bentley (2 cars in 2001, but only 1 car in 2002, also sister brand!) Cadilac & Panoz where hopeless! The R8's in 1999 where NEVER on the pace, reliability won them those podiums, although the BMW wasn't the fastest car either that year.
@@ederss7 the main issue for Le Mans at the time is obvious watching it, until Peugeot re-entered in 2007, no other major manufacturer entered to challenge Audi, & make them push the R8 harder, a bit like how Peugeot had a faster 905 ready to run, I do believe WE would have seen a faster R8 evolution had another major manufacturer had entered Le Mans to challenge Audi!
Only took them 100 years to ruin the last great test of endurance, with the new ridiculous unlapping rules, might as well make it an hour race now.
The unlapping rule is ridiculous, indeed.
pÜgeot
It's pronounced perjoe
Also porsh
Group C was it, I love the newer cars but nothing beats those monsters. The Sauber C9 and/or C11 is my favorite race car ever.
Project cars 2 is my favourite iwish they didn’t ruin it with pc3 🥲
Yes, such a shame
I think the devs that poured their heart and soul into the project cars series never intended that game to be a proper sequel, more of a spinoff. Unfortunately executives decided to brand the game as such and trick sim racers into being hyped for it. I too hated the direction it went, removing many sim elements like pit stops and ruining realistic class grids by including wierd entries (nascar in the gt3 class, group c prototypes racing in the same class as modern lmp cars... just stupid.. totally unrealistic) So I couldnt even pretend to be racing a sim as it ripped me out of the immersion. I've recently heard that the same devs that were gutted by pc3 have moved on to a new studio and are working on GTRevival, which I think is a spiritual successor to gtr2. It looks like the dream game we all wished pc3 was. Much more emphasis on realistic representations of actual racing series/grids, and more of a sim focus. No wasting dev time on a hundred road cars we've seen in every other game, it is strictly focused on motorsport and racing cars. I'm so excited for it. They sound determined to restore their image in the sim community.
A shame you can only get it from key resellers now as well. Always thought it had the best controller handling, and was still good after getting a wheel.
