I watched this movie and spent 30 minutes to myself to appreciate what I've just seen. What an amazing film and WHAT A TEAM AUDI IS! Brilliant! Absolutely amazing! RESPECT to these Engineers! Imagine the courage to bring diesel engines to racing, to the toughest gruelling race of Lemans and win it. Everyone from the Director of the Audi sport down to the mechanic was completely all in throughout the process. Its people before machines all the way. Thank you for this movie.
This was produced by NFL Films and I had the pleasure of doing the finishing. To this date, it's still one of the most fascinating projects I've worked on. I especially love the sequence where our producers put a camera on a car for a practice lap and Allan McNish narrates from the driver's perspective. It's too bad it's out of sync.
as an engineer i completely understanding the lack of emotion with great success and just looking for a place of solitude. the mental capacity required is something few people care to tap into, and doing so makes seconds feel like years. the engineer is the unsung hero, but a hero nonetheless. hats off to audi.
Just watched this video for like hundredth time and still loved it all the same. What a race 2008 Le Mans was! simply awesome. Good that Audi is coming back to Le Mans in 2022
I have watched and also driven a lot of races in my life, but this was the best movie on Le Mans I have ever watched. I have always been a BMW person. Not so much now.
Audi won through sheer hard work and genuine brilliance and the drivers were brilliant too. I feel sorry for Peugeot because if Audi had not been there they could have been the best but Audi were simply better as a team. I knew this even before i watched this despite the fact i am a Peugeot fan myself.
Peugeot may have won the buildup races to LeMans through pure speed but Audi is built not just for speed but durability to withstand 24 hours of flat-out racing pace through both low-speed sections in the corners and chicanes and high speed through the Mulsanne Straight. Also, the drivers are the best of the best in endurance racing.
1:20:00 - 1:22:30 - pretty tense between TK and Haynes. Haynes: "let's get inters on." TK: "weather's dry" Haynes: "inters I'm soaking wet in the lane, inters, Tom." Audi #2 puts inters, Peugeot goes slicks. TK: "I would like to know what Peugeot has done." Haynes: "Tom, let's not worry about Peugeot. I want you to get through this race on the tires you have on your car." Peugeot spins. TK: "These tires are perfect. Half the track is wet." Hayne says "Copy That. You have a 2 min 35 sec lead. Do you understand?" TK: "Thank you very much. Now we're talking." Haynes unspokenly says, "Any other questions you have for me?" TK replies, "No, I think we're good. In fact, we're real good." Haynes: "That's why we get the big bucks, my friend." TK: "And the wins and honors too, H."
It sounds more to me like he's saying "copy that, pit stop" as if to acknowledge Kristensen's report and summarise it as a potential pit stop for the affected car. Don't get me wrong, I'd love it if he said piss off sneakily after Kristensen dared to argue with him but when you're dealing with professionals like them it wouldn't make sense for H to say that after getting a good report at that stage of the race. Just wanted to try and clear it up for anyone who has trouble with British accents or is a non-native speaker
Possible both ways......;) I have a few friends with scottish and northern english accents, so I'm rather used to it. It would also be weird if he deviated from Radio Procedure, as they usually use box this lap etc. to communicate that he should come in. Similar to aviation, team radios can be tough to understand in certain situations, you use a lot of codewords or pre agreed phrases. Could've also been H being smart enough to say things in a way that he could say he was just tired and his speech not perfect, if he said piss off...........given that he knew he was on camera....;)
Oh yeah, not denying that when H would call Kristensen in to the pit he would say box this lap which you hear him say at other points. When he said pit stop I think he was using short hand to say "copy that, Peugeot car has suspension problems and will need to pit as soon as possible" not "copy that, time for you to come in to the pits Tom". It was my fault though for wording it awkwardly though so sorry for the confusion :D
Fantastic movie, thank you very much. Le Mans 24 has always been and will be my favourite event of the year. It's never about who is the fastest, but who can reliably bring the car over the finish line.
proud to say been since i was six always get the same buzz every year and watching it back gives me the biggest goosebumps ever. Really you should watch the second one. thats the best lemans race in modern history
Having previously watched a few F1 docs today, this race seems to have far more skill, excitement and spirit than any F1 race I've seen. Dunno, just seems more genuine than corporate, rule infested, willy waving F1. Great documentary, thanks for the upload.
He rested on the tires that he relied on so heavily to win he race. They carried his car to victory and gave him a place to rest afterwards. Those tires are the real MVP
I feel bad for the man who made the decision to stay on dry tires for Peugeot, that is a weight he will carry for life. His desire to win was greater than his desire to keep the driver and car safe. GG Audi, that was truly a team effort, no one man was the hero, as it should be in racing.
Honestly i thought it was just someone who sounded like him, looked it up, Yes it is Jason Statham. My favorite actor commentating on a documentary that covers my favorite race. Just amazing.
I think the Dindo Capello's "Lion through Rings" quote is epic. Basically saying that the Peugeot (Lion) is very good, but as time moves on and things get more difficult, they're putting themselves at risk of slipping up against the Audi (4 Rings).
I love this race, and I love this movie. But I always chuckle a little bit when he says, "the French automaking giant Peugeot..." to make Audi sound like an underdog. VAG is one of the biggest automakers ever.
considering it was released in 2009, when peugeot was literally faster in qualifying since they rejoined in 2007, fair to assume that audi was being challenged for once
Anyone here after the Alonso/Buemi/Nakajima 2019 win about an hour ago?…..1 hour without motor-racing after the 24 end never feels real! - withdrawal symptoms!
The funny thing is, that I've heard the same statement as Herr Baretzky made in totally different area, steam locomotives. There are those two locos, the Merchant Navy Pacific and West Country/Battle of Britain Light Pacific, designed by Olliver Bulleid, that are uncommonly quiet for steam locos, only having a whisper instead of the usually more pronounced bark. And that is attributed to the same reason as the Audi Engine......very good internal layout, so that most of the energy is used for traction. In other words it's so quiet, because it's so effective. Further proof of the concept from a totally unrelated area. ;)
WONDERFUL PRODUCTION - Since the 60's - it's always been my Fav'd event. Even my Art teacher in highschool knew I was a freak of the Sport - carving large lithographs in vinyl to offset print the car that Newman & McQueen drove.
I'd be making them tear it up and fix it. Hell, I'd even ask the other two drivers if they wouldn't mind me vandalising it so they HAVE to replace it, and then I'd go out of my way to make damn sure the name was spelt correctly the next time.
39:50 mate. The time you've quoted is the end of the lap, and there's hardly any point directing them to that time if they want to watch the lap narration... Not that it mattered much, you posted that before time-stamps auto-converted to a hyperlink.
Audi are truly mighty. They are mega busy in Motorsport. LMP1, DTM, GT's.......but I wish so much for them to come into Formula One in either an engine supplier or Team.
i find it absolutely incredible that the new r18 e tron quattro is just as fast as this, despite only having a 3.7 litre single turbo v6 rather than a twin turbo 5.5 liter v12, that for me is what innovation is all about, taking the new rules, and making it faster than the last even if the rules do suggest other wise. well done audi, this is what 'real racing' is all about, great racing, great driving, great cars, and great ideas
This is the professional blood sports. Legend could happen to Audi, and it could happen to Audi again, and again, and again and again and again. Vorsprung durch Technik!
8:52 What the hell is that car in 2nd doing? Did they collide or did he force the other car off the track? I’m really curious and now I want to go look up the race to see if I can find out the outcome. Edit: Just went and watched the race finish and he didn’t force the 3rd car off the track, but he did bump into his front fender area trying to squeeze by. I was grossing 80,000 traveling toward Miles City - E. on I-90. It was raining hard and I recalled a thing about Hydroplaning above 60 M.P.H. It worked there. Amazing difference with these cars.
Does anyone notice when tom switches as it starts raining the footage shows the car in first place? Theres one red light illuminated on the side of the car signifying its in 1st place
I love the fact that there were two flag-bearers on the corner with the parked van, halving the already slim chance the driver would not see the yellow flag.
Reposting what John Oxley posted 8 years ago; before UA-cam automatically converted timestamps to hyperlinks: Alan McNish starts his explanation of the lap at 39:50.
For those who prefer typing '&t=XXXX at the end of the hyperlink in the website address bar; where XXXX is the number of seconds into the video, 39:50 converts to 2390 seconds.
Funny how they claim the 5,5 litre Diesels only had 650hp. In their weakest form they had far, far over 700hp. In 08 and 10 the engines had around 800hp. In the ALMS Audis were Running 4 digit horsepower in Quali.
I wish they’d restore Le Mans to the mid-late 80s configuration. It’s still a great track and perhaps my all time favorite next to Sebring but the way it looked in the 80s without the chicanes was cool. It still had that country side look but was also beginning to look more like a closed modern circuit.
The stones on Haynes to stand his ground with the legend himself Mr. Le Mans in crunch time, to get the right tire decision, chapeau to you sir!
The engine lack of noise explanation. Simplified by love making. I love this guy
Baretzky is this guy, who lives for his job and still a man who has fun doing it...

If you get it you get it.
I still prefer a screamer
I miss these days so much. Thank you Tom Kristensen!

Old post i know. It must have been really cool working on this. Finishing meaning editing?
The captions are hilarious.. "24 hours of your mom" "24hours of lamont" "24 hours of limo" everything but Le Mans.. 🤦♂️
Danny Williams hey why are you so aggressive? he just didn’t see it probably, no reason to call him retarded
It’s weird actually, the onboard lap actually does line up with modern lmp1 nowadays
Strange coincidence
No, actually I had the plesure of doing the finishing.
And yes it was fascinating I guess🥱
McNish 17:08 "I personally do not believe in luck"
