Do you notice a difference in water needs between a steel bed and a masonry one?

No, even the ones on the south side of my home where it gets over 100°on a regular basis, they don't dry out any faster. It really seems dependant on the mix I use.
The topsoil mix seems to hold water a lot longer. For the ones where I mix my own soil, the vermiculite makes the biggest difference in water retention.
