  • Bonus episode 3.5 in which Troy and I off-topic from what I'd planned (romantic comedies!) and solely talk about the technical craft of early film scoring. Namely, streamers and punches!

I would love an entire show of just Austin telling stories and teaching something.

Is it weird I would gladly listen to them discussing the old Hollywood studio system for at least another hour and half? Like that subject is fascinating

Man this was so interesting, such an amazing process for when things needed to be done in the pre-digital era. You are a wealth of knowledge Mr. Wintory.

I do love how the analog informs the digital. I have training in AVID Media Composer. My professors made sure we know WHY Media Composer is the way it is and what makes Media Composer so consistent.
Now you got me wondering what kind of stuff gets cut from Play, Watch, Listen!

I just love how austin explains everything with examples. I'm learning more about the film industry here than I did in music school. Thank you !

I discovered your work through PWL and then also fell in love with the game makers podcasts you host. I've very little knowledge of music but all of the content you produce is such an enjoyable experience regardless! I recently got the pathless and your score for it is by far my favourite so far, thanks for all you do Austin!

Every episode of this spin-off has been extraordinary and unique. I don’t know if there’s anything like this on UA-cam.
I played Violin and Trumpet from the ages of 4 and 8 respectively until college, but I picked up the guitar last year during quarantine now that I graduated college and had much more free time (studied Physics and Computer Science). I’m also a software engineer with an interest in pursuing positions in the games industry, with an intense interest in film. I always wanted to hear more of Austin’s insight in PWL, since most of what Alanah and Mike have to say is what I already have a professional background and formal education in.
I think Troy is the perfect guest on this show as someone with an extensive background in music AND film, but not necessarily score composition.

Troy is absolutely right. I have seen how this is done. But I never knew how it is called, and how it actually works.
So I learned something and it was fascinating.

Striping is my absolute favorite method of scoring. All of my favorite composers do it and it seems like a great method.

Being on covid-time right now (France is still in full lock-down mode these days), I listen to these videos as podcast while working on a personal animated music video. I believe that Troy and Austin are the best people to listen to while doing 3D graphics makes me feel like an old lady knitting by the fire and listening to the "men's" stories of the world in the background. It's both incredibly informative and perfectly soothing at the same time. Thank you so much for sharing these conversations. It is the best!

So cool to get this information. I didn’t know about streamers and punches until now, but I always wondered how scoring those kinds of musical accents to reflect what was happening on film was done. So now I know! It just goes to show how technology has advanced the process where I can literally click a button in Logic or Sibelius to add a video and score to it with absolute precision thanks to new innovations, but it just makes you that much more impressed with how it was done before. Thanks for bringing this information to light!

The comment about movies and TV being more commercial now made me lol because it’s so true and I hear the comment from friends sometimes. There are definitely more artistically driven shows and movies today than ever.

Thanks for putting these out regularily Austin. Been going through a tough breakup, no job (I’m a video producer), and to top the whole thing off, we’ve got this whole global pandemic thing going on. But these videos put a much needed smile to the face, and ears, of this amateur musician. Best wishes!

@@awintory Oh definitely! Been playing the piano for relaxation, and also been using your Abzu score as a backdrop for Headspace meditation. Also a great score on its own of course! Just love the synth pad layered behind the instruments, and did you also mix the chorus to remove some of the highs, giving it a low-pass waterlike quality? Anyways, love your work, looking forward to every new album!

I'd finally sat down and watched "Up In The Air" over the weekend because y'all discussed it in the previous episode, and really enjoyed it!
One question I've had in mind since watching it is what your thoughts are on using Licensed music in film. In your opinion, are there any examples of where the use of a popular song makes more sense in a pivotal scene than using the original score, or perhaps even outshines the original score of a movie?
There are many facets of this to examine and debate, I'm sure, but I just thought you'd have an interesting opinion on it.
Regardless, if you read this, thank you for taking the time to and for making more content. I'm really loving this series!

So... Make'em Laugh was a ripoff from Be a Clown, which wasn't used with the original lyrics who knows why, since all other songs were. Donald O'Connor HAD to do something extraordinaire to make it his own performance, and he did. He was that talented. The coreography was done to match the song, and he nailed it.
Also, those time tables was how I was taught to edit soundtracks in college. From that you can see how much of an industry veteran my teacher was. Great musician, pretty meh as a teacher, but I was right to see his classes for what he was trying to say, and not for what he actually said.

This is off-topic but I'm really curious to hear your opinion on some anime soundtracks Austin. I'm not into anime that much, but I recently started watching Attack on Titan based on a friend's recommendation and I can't believe how good the music sounds! If I was a betting man, I'd say you're not into anime either but I really think you'll enjoy the AOT soundtrack!

There's a deep well of anime music I don't know very well but I've heard bits of AOT and there's some awesome stuff. Generally everything I've heard of Yoko Kanno has always been impressively forward-looking and of course, Joe Hisaishi has written some astounding scores for Ghibli. But I'm not an expert
