Regarding Horner's accent: He was born in LA, but I'm pretty sure he spent his entire childhood in England. He returned to the States in his late teens / early twenties.

I just searched for music from James Horner and stumpled across your video. And yes, he was one of the greatest.
    - In a land before time
    - Balto
    - The Secret of NIHM

I grew up with this movies. I was beyond sad when I heard about his passing.

What?! The Secret of NIMH is Goldsmith!
I should know, because it was my second record of a movie soundtrack I had as a child after E.T. ;)
The "Moving Day" cue is still my favourite piece of music that I know of him, right after "The Tractor" from the same album.

The Rocketeer is easily my favorite of Horner's scores - it's adventurous and bombastic; it's understated and elegant; it's romantic... it's just great. I literally arranged parts of it for piano, recorded it, and made it my ringtone.

That opening track from The Mask of Zorro is one of the best opening pieces of music ever. Declarative, stylish, immediately adventurous. There are very, very, very few score openings that grab me literally the moment they start, and that's one of them.

Horner also followed Goldsmith on the Don Bluth films, after Jerry did Secret of NIMH. Lois Carruth told me that someone asked Jerry once if he’d heard a recent Horner score, to which Jerry replied, “no, what have I written now?”

I love that a celebration of this man's genius and body of work can be enriched (as opposed to distracted) by real talk and funny stories about his very human flaws. It somehow brings an added layer of depth to his legacy.

One of my favorite modern composers sitting down with one of my favorite voice actors for a chat about the first film composer I was a fan of as a kid (I started with loving and recording video game music via a portable tape deck + downloading midis, but Braveheart is what got me into buying soundtrack CDs)... yeah, I'm absolutely loving this! And great pick for a score, I loved the Zorro soundtrack. "The Fencing Lesson" is a personal fave.

Titanic was the score that made me obsessed with film scoring .... What can I say about James Royel Horner .... So many movies ... Where you can start , Wolf Totem , Commando , Jumanji , Star Trek 2 and 3 , Willow , Aliens , The Rocketeer , Legends of the Fall , The Zorro movies , Titanic , Avatar , Deep Impact , Flight Plan , Troy , The perferct storm , Avatar , Karate kid , The Amazing Spiderman , Bicentennial Man , Land before time , An American tail , Glory , Braveheart , Apocalypto , House of sand and fong , Mighty Joe Young , Casper , Balto , Field of Dreams , A beautiful mind , Apollo 13 , and the list goes on and on ...
James is my mentor ... and really loved his musical style of writing ... so emotional , to atonal creepy , and a little horror , and he had so many tips for me ... percussive sound of pianos ... glissandos in pianos , palm clusters in pianos upwars to downwards and the opposite . 2 or 3 basic grand pianos, the basic number but sometimes more than 3 Pianos and Synthesizers . Tubular bells glissandos and random pitches , anvils clunging , use of puilli sticks as metronome , marching snares and field snares , and too piccolo snares , sometimes with or without snares . Pianos low arpeggiated chords whith contrasting high strings . Solo voice using , synth choir or physical choir . Strings divisi a5 , Contrabass trombone for doubling Cimbasso , and Tuba C- bass doubling Bass trombones , major chords using for making anticipation and suspence higher , modal scales using ! Sound effects at strings , the trumpet alert motive ( tatata- ta ,) everywhere . Concert toms thundering passages ... And so many others ...
The man was a school from his one . One category himself ! RIP MAESTRO !

That final little speech at 1:10:31 nailed it. It is exactly how I feel about Horner's death. I am very aware of Horner's multiple quirks, but I miss his scores so much more every year nonetheless, especially since it has been hard for me to like the direction in which Zimmer and others have taken film music (although I recognize Zimmer's talent).

  • @henningbackhaus6268

Thanks for the anecdote on "Spiderwick Chronicles"! For me, this score easily surpasses "Zorro", it's much more sophisticated in orchestration, in counterpoint, in all the details. In phases it sounds as if this music was written for the concert hall. The only thing it doesn't have is a catchy theme, of course.
I was lucky enough to meet Horner in 2013 at a workshop at the Vienna University of Music (his father was Austrian), unfortunately, he already was quite burnt out and fragile. He seemed to me like an older brother of Michael Jackson: quiet, friendly, but also slightly enraptured and no longer really present. I liked his stories about his years as a student in London and Hamburg. He was, after all, a student of György Ligeti, so perhaps that explains a bit of his academic snootiness. And to some extent, I'm sure he had slightly autistic traits, but nonetheless, at the end of his life, he was actually a likable guy.

Revisiting to Zorro's score reminds me of the feeling I had when I first listened to Rimsky-Korsakov's symphonic suite Scheherazade. There is something so grandiose, big sounding with interweaving motifs that tell stories throughout the piece that I felt like I was on a journey with the composer, even without having the images in front of me.
I love the entire discussion about James Horner and insights into the work habit of such a legend. It's so sad that he passed away so soon. Thank you for the video!

Zorro is absolutely one of my favourites, and I can see what you mean about it being peak Horner with nothing else being as good after. I would agree were it not for The Perfect Storm and Avatar (personally). Sure, The Perfect Storm is Horner doing his Horner thing and ripping off every trick in his book, but I feel like it's the pinacle of that 90s sound (even though it was 2000) that he perfected it in that score. Avatar was a wonderful mix of ALL of his sounds; old school right to his most modern.

I just discovered this series and I need to see the others haha. James Horner was a composer who was a big influence on me as a composer. I immediately was hooked and gravitated towards his philosophy of scoring films. His way of finding the “heart” of the movie or the human element. He was a master of emotion.
Zorro is one of my favorite scores and movies so that made me happy you started it off with it haha. Horner will always be big part of who I am musically. I’m still trying to learn to score the “heart” of a project! That whole mentality is a very good tool for movies!! Great video man!!

@@awintory yeah absolutely, usually beginners will have a droneless set. The drones don't have to be used and are often employed quite sparingly, especially in scores and folk rock/metal where it might muddy the sound. But even as a solo instrument it definitely has a beautifully wistful feel without drones, I always think it's such a noble sound.
Also anecdotally I believe they're hard to keep in tune haha, but I'm getting out of my realm of knowledge and you'd have to ask an actual piper about that.

Sneakers, that soundtrack feels like the 90s to me. Also listening to Horner scores you find so many repeating melodies which I actually like because if it works it works. Playing Go from beautiful mind, is borrowed for the amazing spider-man, so is the ending brass section of the rocketeer used for spidey. Zimmer does this as well and Elfman, but there’s a beauty and mysterious longing to Horners scores that resonate with my ears

Thanks for shining a spotlight on Mask of Zorro. I really need to give it a closer listen, because the cues you highlighted were excellent. For me, the best Horner score will likely always be Krull. I adored the film growing up, back when it was in heavy rotation on HBO, and his music was a big part of the experience. It's such a unique blend of choral, synth, and horn-forward orchestra with spectacular melodies throughout. I've always wanted to perform the full score in concert with the film projected behind the ensemble, but I'm not sure the brass would make it past the first hour. I'm loving this show, by the way. Please keep recording episodes. Perhaps you can do an episode on Randy Newman some day. It seems Troy needs some help fully appreciating that man's genius. Cheers.

I think there's a certain special energy that Horner captures when he scored movies that are either kids movies or made with kids in mind. Titantic and Braveheart are great scores for adult-geared movies -certainly not meant for kids. But with The Mask of Zorro, it seems like there's this expanded creativity that goes above and beyond other scores, and I think that might partly come from the source material - that it's an adventure that can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. You mentioned The Land Before Time, which was specifically made for kids, but also fits that bill. Then there's Willow and The Rocketeer (my personal favorite) that are the same way.

Horner grew up in London and his accent is product of that.

My understanding was that he went to Royal College of Music but otherwise grew up in California.
To be clear, it doesn't matter to me. Anyone can talk however they want; I just always found it a peculiar accent and SEEMED put on, but I clearly don't have the inside story there

Thank you, UA-cam algorithm for bringing me here, my love for videogame-actors and scores combined in one podcast!
I love James Horner, he composed basically the whole score of my childhood with A land before time, An American Tail, Balto, Jumanji, Zorro and the Grinch. And I will always have a soft spot for the score of the first Amazing Spider-man movie.
And thank you Mr. Wintory for the scores of Journey and AC: Syndicate (my favorite AC score) and this podcast, this was fun and insightful! I will stay for a while. Beautiful words also there at the end of the podcast. I feel the same way, I miss James Horner and would have loved to see what he would have done in the future.
If you will ever do Thomas Newman, I want to recommend his score for The Horse whisperer the movie by Robert Redford from 1998 (if you don't know it already). That score is my favorite of ALL time, I love it and listen to it on a regular basis for almost 20 years now. I just think (in my musically-uneducated opinion) it does not get the credit it deserves. The Rhythm of the horse is just

Thanks for the reminder of how good that movie was as a whole. Quiet enjoyable to watch and listen too. Would love to hear your thoughts on Ottman's composition for The Usual Suspects. Love the main theme, how it builds and that the film brought it to the forefront so that it could be fully enjoyed rather than putting it under dialogue.

I think his score for the first Amazing Spider-Man is extremely underrated. It doesn't, perhaps, have the same kind of immediately recognizable leitmotifs of the movies that preceded it, but the way he managed to infuse the movie with an oddly child-like innocence is nothing short of...amazing (heh).

When Austin is discussing his favourite Treks and he's describing 6, Troy looks perplexed that Austin likes that movie and mentions Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon. Did he just mean to say Plummer or is he actually thinking of Search for Spock?
By the way, absolutely loving this series and the two hosts are a delight.

For me, the Battle of the Mutara Nebula will probably always be the musical highpoint of Star Trek. Thinking Horner was not even 30 and basically ordered to find a way to combine elements between Goldsmiths Star Trek, Williams' Star Wars and Courages tv trek theme, it is mindboggling how undeniably great the Start Trek II soundtrack turned out.

The level of awesomness of this series is off the charts. I could listen to you two talk for hours.
And let me just say, that even though you speak enthusiastically about Horner as a composer, this talk only solidified my negative opinion of the guy.
I can't stand his style, his constant "borrowing" of other peoples ideas ("Oh let's steal some Shostakovich and Prokoviev, and a good measure of Katchaturian, no one will notice...". I guess you have seen the videos on UA-cam with lengthy examples of just how shamelessly he steals from other composers) or repeating his own ideas, or constantly scoring for Uillean Pipes, and that aggravating Panflute misuse as rhythmic instrument, until your eyes start rolling into the back of your head when they show up in the next movie he scored.
And all the anecdotes you had about him didn't endear him to me any further.
Going on tangent on Rosza was also a welcome addition. "El Cid" is my favourite soundtrack of a movie I have never seen.
And Rosza's non film music is also just great stuff. There is a 3 Part series of mixed Orchestral works on Chandos available on Spotify.
