I always seems to forget, just how amazing Troy Baker is at acting, the subtle changes in his voice, the tone, and the way he puts weight on the right words at the right time. No wonder he and Nolan North is in everything.
I like how Higgs straight up tells you what Amalie is and it goes straight over your head. Higgs: "The girl for instance. DOOMs ain't her thing. She's more into destruction on a world wide scale. An extinction entity." Player: "....huh? What?" Game: shut up and fight this boss.
On top of just being the most entertaining villain Kojima has ever written, what I love about Higgs is that he's a gleefully evil character who is fun to watch and very effective as a villain, but wasn't JUST evil for the sake of being evil. There's hints all throughout his appearance that he just stopped giving a fuck and when you read his diaries, you realize why. He may be evil, but he's an evil born out of a horrific world where living doesn't really mean much, and since he has DOOMS, Higgs has probably died again and again and again, realizing that there is an afterlife, but that he's trapped in a world like this. It's enough to drive anyone insane.
The way he's presented Higgs is almost like slam poetry. A little emphasis here...a pause there...deep breaths and chuckles. Honestly he's a great character to be studied because his presence alone means a performance is about to happen. Good Goddess, I love Troy Baker.
I just noticed that the Odredek shakes when Higgs appears behind Sam. If the Odredek is BBs way of seeing the world, then it indicates BBs emotions of being terrified by Higgs. Such a good small detail

justjackyboy No problem, man! Happy to explain. Thanks for responding back. Celebs often have a busy schedule - especially if they need to be in the same place at the same time. Plus, the amount of dialogue to memorize and rehearsals to attend were significant. And Kojima-san couldn’t leave Tokyo too often (he was at every shoot/rehearsal). With Higgs, when I was cast for performance capture, Troy was not official yet. I was just happy to be a part of such an amazing project! I wasn’t originally given Deadman, but when the original actor left, they asked me to fill in then made me the permanent actor - even though I’m not his body type. (I also directed cutscenes on 3 WWE games which I also wrote/designed, and I did mocap for Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 around the same time I worked on Death Stranding)
Troy baker gets even more amazing when you realize he goes from voicing Rhys in tales from the borderlands to just a strait up phycopathe in this charcter intro God he puts so much soul into his work.
3:41 If you look real closely you'll notice that Higgs's odradek is slightly off to the side locked onto Sam meaning Higgs is looking directly at us. Also right before he disappears at the end he turns every so slightly to look at the camera again.

I love the odradek's animation. The odradek itself is really creative and its really cool how it shows BB's personality as well as looking like a human hand which fits with alot of the game's themes. 👍

To everyone labeling Higgs a "weak mandatory antagonist": *WARNING, MILD SPOILERS AHEAD* He's not. Higgs is a fool that thinks too much of himself. He understands parts of what is happening, but not the whole picture. Amelie told or showed him what her true purpose is - to usher a Final Stranding, and lent him a portion of her powers to create a makeshift "villain" for Sam to confront and, ultimately, win over. She obviously didn't explain to Higgs that in the end he will inevitably be cast aside as a used tool. That is why he THINKS he understands. That is why he's such a childish dick in every scene up until the final ones. In his mind, he's a kid with a sledgehammer in a mirror funhouse that has just been told to go nuts. That's why he looks so disappointed when, in the end, Amelie strips him of his powers, and basically forgets he even existed. So, while creating a corny deadpoolish antagonist definitely was part of their goal, I think Kojima and his team did a pretty good job covering their tracks, integrating him organically into the story and giving him more than just a few cheeky lines - a touch of human emotion at the end, that puts an ironic twist on everything he did and said before.
The game is unique because for the most part none of the characters are straight up villains. Diehardman was following orders and deeply regrets what he did, Cliff was just a dad who wanted to be with his son, Amelie/Bridget thought that humanity was suffering, and just wanted it all to end. Higgs was the only character who was simply evil for the sake of being a dick, and in the end, he was just a selfish fool who thought too highly of himself. Great characterisation on Kojima’s part.
The one thing I'd change about this game is Troy's character. When all is said and done he's pretty underused. Shame for a character with this much potential

So hard to make connections when you can’t shake hands - analogy of social distancing before it even happened. Kojimas literally a genius at what he does.

I didn’t pick up on it until now but higgs, especially with the way troy chooses to weigh his words here, kind of gives me the same vibes as micah from rdr2. I liked him as a character at first but after making that connection I don’t know if I can continue to LOL. really nice voice work though, of course.
Ever since I’ve played this game I have always hated Higgs. But this proves that he’s a badass, intimidating, and an overarching villain. Not to mention Troy Baker pulling off such a good performance akin to Hollywood Celebrities.
I kindof wish they had gotten David Hayter to play Higgs, but Troy Baker did a fantastic job with this material. This may go down as his best performance.

I liked how the antagonists had a different motif to their outward characters.
Higgs - evil
Cliff - creepy
Amelie - extinction

That’s Higgs’ side of the story, but as far as Amelie’s concerned he’s just the designated bad guy for railroading Sam on his journey.
He’s a good villain because he likes pizza

The one thing I'd change about this game is Troy's character. When all is said and done he's pretty underused. Shame for a character with this much potential

i'm going to be honest here, i think Higgs is my favorite character in the game
Higgs' namesake is the Higgs boson which is used to explain why particles have mass, sometimes called the "God particle" (though physicists hate it being called that)
And he causes chaos giving meaning to the name, kojima man
Cause the higgs boson makes sure everything doesn't go into chaos by holding matter together

I love this cutscene, it's just so good, Troy Baker really is an amazing actor, and for the people who complain of the "lack of subtlety", I'm gonna ask you..... Since when Kojima has been "subtle", huh?

I didn’t pick up on it until now but higgs, especially with the way troy chooses to weigh his words here, kind of gives me the same vibes as micah from rdr2. I liked him as a character at first but after making that connection I don’t know if I can continue to LOL. really nice voice work though, of course.

something about how the shoulder detector looks visibly frightened when Higgs gets in close just makes it that much more tense

Ever since I’ve played this game I have always hated Higgs. But this proves that he’s a badass, intimidating, and an overarching villain. Not to mention Troy Baker pulling off such a good performance akin to Hollywood Celebrities.
