Great video. Go one size up on tire and this would be perfect. The only thing I don't like is the seating position of the Taco.
Yeah its pretty bad
The Taco has the worst seating position of any truck, and one of the worst on-road driving mannerisms. Honestly, unless you need the off-road performance specifically, it is the least-practical mid-sized truck in terms of cab space, seating, ride quality, and even bed utility. Even if off-road is something you do regularly, buy a used CUV and UTV (or beater truck). If you don't have the budget for a beater off-road truck or UTV, only then get the Taco.
As someone who enjoys off-roading, I purchased a different used vehicle for my daily driver and got a used UTV, and still spent less than a used TRD sport of the same model year as my vehicle, much less Off-Road or Pro. I got a better daily drive, and a vehicle that can go on trails that the Taco cannot even legally traverse. Much more bang for my buck.
I like the Toyota vehicles in general, but I once worked for a utility company that maintained a fleet of Tacos and some aging early 2000s Ford Rangers, which I regularly drove 100-200 miles daily in, and I would take the old ranger over a current Taco for a daily driver any day of the week.
@@jg8263 I drive them for work. I have gotten used to them, but I prefer the Frontiers at work over the tacos.
@@stout_tossme7541 Absolutely agree on the Frontier. It will be interesting to see how the new ones are.
after pulling a bunch of different rigs in at work i can't believe how poor the visibility is on everything compared to my Xterra. all this swapping of glass for metal in the name of safety is great but seems like being able to see out would help a lot too.
Shopping for a new truck and keep landing on this page. You guys cover EVERYTHING! Thanks for the great content.
Love the Taco vids. Keep em coming!
Even on stock tires, the TRD Off-Road rigs devour that terrain. Stress free walk in the park.
Nah the dealer AT tires suck hard
I really love to see factory giving lift options that does not void warranty. Some Toyota dealers offer spacer lift and you have to ask multiple times to find out that it will void the warranty to suspension related issues. By looking at this lift look like it does not have a diff drop kit and i think it will reduce the front wheel travel. Correct me if I'm wrong, unless you change the tire size you still get the factory ground clearance. As for side steps I know atleast for 4Runners have factory slider option which are called as "Rock rails". BTW I always love Andre's reviews.
I ordered myself a Tacoma from the recommendation of this video. I placed my order in October 2021 and got mine in November due to someone who built their Tacoma with similar additions and bailed. I've added many additions including 285/75/17 tires and deaver stage II rear leaf springs due to extra weight. Having a more overload spring helps a bunch with the squat and overall performance from the rear shocks. I am still testing if I like the front spring rate but overall I can't complain about what I have. Having a TRD Pro without paying the extra 5k premium is a benefit
OUTSTANDING REVIEW / AS ALWAYS 🔪🇺🇸🔥💨
I bought a Trd Off Road fully loaded with a manual about 2 months ago and had the dealership add this TRD Lift Kit a month after purchase. So far, so good! I haven’t had a chance to get it truly off road yet but even around town and the interstate it rides so much better than stock. I think it looks perfect too. Total price was around $1500 for the kit and about $1k for labor (includes alignment).
Did they up the price? From my knowledge the price should be $1,750 with the labor included.
Did you lose mpg
Nice bro that's really cool I'm coming from a Honda Accord so the 🚛💨 feels plenty big for me stock & I don't really go off-roading too much n' if I do this is more than enough i bet haha but I'm glad you got yours & you enjoy it, If you do real off-roading I bet that lift is going to help so much. These trucks are really nice I picked up a 2019 used with pretty low miles & mine's the 6-foot 🛏️ so it's perfect for work I was so happy it had the long 🛏️ The guy told me a lot of people want a short bed I guess for off-roading I can see that but for my purposes 6 ft is not really that long just about right for me
@@jaiveerbajwa928 oh yeah I'm sure it did lose some mpg... I'm surprised he said it rides better than stock. I would imagine it would be the same or very similar to stock. It sure not going to be as aerodynamic, not like it ever was but the higher up the worse it gets I would think🤔 I was thinking about doing it but then again I don't go off-road enough & I was thinking do I off-road more or drive in the city more?? That's why I decided to leave it alone. Makes the truck look awesome with the Lyft tho, little bigger tires would b amazing. Right there with TRD pro & save 6-8K or so
Are you still running the 16" wheels with 265/75r16?
The Taco did all of that and you didn't even air-down. Impressive
Great video 🤜🏽✊🏽🤜🏽
I didn’t know this was available from Toyota. Perfect lift for all my needs. Wish the TRD OR came standard with this lift. Just add 265/75/16 tires and your set.
Agreed especially knowing its almost 50k for a midsize truck, that's a lot. And the lift should've been standard
I just got this done in Aurora on my 21 TRD off-road Tacoma I got last sept. Didn’t know this was available at the time. Already had TRD pro flat bronze wheels and 275/70r17 tikes that rubbed the mudflats so this worked good. Now need to find a trail without snow to test it out
Do you get any rub now?
The side steps are perfect for everyday use. Not everyone will go into the terrain that is shown in this video. Tacoma is king when it comes to all around reliability, fuel efficiency and capabilities. The Chevy ZR2 comes very close but time will tell with reliability.
Love it!!!!!
I'm early seeing it, I was looking for this lol. Good job guys! Thanks
I really hope the 2024 seats are way more comfortable. How would this do with a 3 inch readylift?
I switched from a ranger to a Tacoma off road I love the switch the v6 will do trust me. The eco boost and 10speed is too much for me. This is a legit durable truck worth the 40k
Yes it is truly worth it, I just picked up a 2022 TRD off road and I love it!
I called my Toyota dealer asking about the factory lift kit for my Tacoma and they said they didn't know what I was talking about...
it’s probably region specific
They're probably selling like hot cakes and haven't made it to all dealers. Obviously they will send them to states with more tacoma sales first.
Most Toyota dealers, I suspect would be more honest & upfront with you, 'One Toyota dealer sales rep actually mentioned it to me this past week on the phone trying to gain my business
This truck - different tires, - MANUAL :D
I’ll agree with you on the AT tires but an 8 or 10 speed would be even more awesome then shifting gears in a truck.
@@9663mu dude I totally agree. I don’t understand the manual trans fetish. Who wants to be shifting gears all the time ? I drive manuals at work and it sucks. To each their own I guess
@@DanBCooper never understood it for trucks I get race cars but doing slow rock crawling on manual is dumb af
@@9663mu I guess that applies to someone who hasnt driven a manual their whole life and have no problem with it. To each their own.
@@DanBCooper because we got old heads not wanting to let go of the past. The auto is now more reliable more powerful, faster, and better than a manual transmission.
Nice video TFL! If they can put some 32" tires that are a bit more aggressive yet street friendly like the Falkin Wildpeaks, the truck will be awesome to take off roading right off the dealerships lot.
KO2 in 265/75/16= perfect.
@@useryggfdcc yup fits stock no rubbing 🤙
@@Ww8.3 what about 275/75/16?
@@rbyee7571 you will be running into rubbing issues possibly with that size. I think 265/75/16, 265/70/17, 255-85-16 are the limit
Where do you guys find all of these fun offroad roads? All the ones around fort collins are private property or has a yuppie gate
I'm actually considering cancelling my Wrangler order to get a Tacoma with this exact spec, minus the auto transmission that i'd switch for a 6MT. It seems like this truck suits my needs a tad more.
Tacoma over a wrangler 1000000 times
The Tacoma will last at least twice as long, with way less problems along the way.. Toyota’s are such a better made vehicle.
Traveled around the world twice and spoke to everyone once while driving Toyotas🙌🏾 Excellent vehicles and usually will have a minimum of half your initial purchase price at 5 years with 100% reliability for the duration so Yotas only for me. I have driven Toyota’s in six of seven continents!
Lol I did exactly that. Canceled my jeep and got this exact set up arrives in 8 days;)
And it’d be reliable! 👍🏻
I just ordered an access cab in manual and I definitely plan on getting this kit from factory then pair that with better tyres and it’ll be a good truck
Shut up fool. that trim configuration hasn't existed for years now
@@hostilityy TRD Off-Road - Access Cab, 6 foot box with manual transmission is available in Canada
Does 1 - 2 inches really make a difference? i figured like 4 inches and above would.
What tires would you recommend for the Tacoma if you would do this trail again? Thank you for the video it was great.
I like the ko2s if you want to keep it fairly quite on the road but still want the off-road meat
If you have a pro, go with the westcottdesigns lift kit on the Fox shocks for additional lift
7:45 "Oh Shit" after the truck comes down hard..lol
Is that factory lift available for the 2021 Tundras?
1:58 Hard to find a good lift for a Taco?!? For $1500 you could do a lot in the aftermarket (Bilstein, Eibach, Dobs, Ironman, etc)
They probably wouldn't work with the radar tho
OME makes great lifts for Tacomas too
@@bigboi2089 After lifting the TSS sensor does have to be recalibrated, yeah.
Good luck ordering literally any of what you just named off. Lemme know how long the back order is, bud.
ICON, FOX, King, etc etc. SOOOO many good kits.
How about “living with the lift kit”, are they rebuildable? If not will I be able to buy replacement Bilstein with a TRD sticker for double the price down the road if Toyota still offers them, will they take off my Diode Dynamics fog lights and cap them off? Does the price include alignment? Not sure about this deal.........
I have a 2019 TRD Off-Road 4X2---Would I be able to ask Toyota for this lift/shock kit? or is this only reserved for the newer models?
I'm curious if I wanted the TRD Factory Lift on my 22 TACO SR5. Why am I stuck with upgrading to the Pro Grille (TSS Sensor Nonsense Calibration) and fog light blackouts?
Would you rather get a manual or auto Tacoma?
Great video!
New Tacoma’s are very hard to find at the moment!
Did you try the dealership? Just a thought....
Yes they are! I have a 4runner but wanted to test drive any tacoma since I’m in need of a bed and don’t need a full size and the tacoma is exactly what I was wanting but every dealer near me literally have like 1 or 2 and can’t even be test driven cause they are on hold from other people waiting to purchase. It’s crazyyy right now.
@@Drive3SIX5 yeah I bought one but it was the only one and I waited a month for it.
They keep asking me if I want to sell my 2019 TRD - heck no! Have you seen the prices of the new models! 😬💸
Yea I have been waiting for two months from factory.
How does this Toyota Dealer install Tacoma 2/1 Lift Kit affect your Hwy Ride & Milage if you retain your stock tires ??
Does anyone know if Toyota offers this lift package for the 4Runner and Tundra???
When you order the factory lift, it should automatically come with better offroad tires...
Highway tires are required for the ultimate test. He is an idiot.
@@johnmadsen37 isn’t it a press truck?
The dealership I went to put k02s on them with rims
I’d like to see a lifted off-road vs a stock pro. Since the price is almost comparable.
I say it needs the side steps if for no other reason I have them ! I notice he hit one of the steps so that saved a rocker panel ...
AGREED!
Is it smoother than off road ? On highways ? Local roads
Do we need TFLBids spam every video? Come on guys....
Does the lift kit come with the front approach camera set up on the grill?
Yes. Mine has a dummy filler piece where the camera would be as the front/surround camera was the only factory option I didn’t get.
Andre did you measure the diff to see if it Indeed did go from 9.4 to 11 inches of lift?
The diff height cannot increase with a suspension lift. The diff height of clearance is based on how much tire you add. He sadly doesn’t know or misstated that measurement. Either way, it’s extremely off putting and makes me like this channel even less than before.
Only reason I’m getting this lift is for the recalibration of the TSS for the front off the grill.
Does this truck have an open diff in 2wd?
A Toyota that will last 50 years and 900,000 miles now with factory lift. Perfect match!
Can you get it for a 2020 Trd off road if you bring it to Toyota. That way you don’t void any warranty?
why do you not recommend the premium package?
Is this available for the 4runner?
This truck has the multi terrain camera system.
Nice vid! What exactly the trd lift?? I saw a block and grey shocks bilstein (looks like 5100) on the rear but the front I cant see! Trd skidplate included?
The front shocks are relabeled 5100s installed on the top groove.
Skid plate is an extra 500 or so.
I got this lift on my 21 TRD OF (Army Green) and I'm loving it! Idk why y'all didn't talk about the warranty or the recalibration of the TSS. Most Tacomas have issues with their TSS after leveling lifts like this one.
What size of tires are you running with it?
@@rbyee7571 Stock for now...but hope to go bigger in the future
@@MichaelRichins would bigger tires mess with TSS again?
The TSS recalibration is part of this lift, if you got this from the dealership. Because this TRD lift comes with the heritage grill (like the one in this video), that repositions the TSS sensor, and the dealership should calibrate it when they make this installation
Did you order it with the lift? Also, did they reduce payload on the door sticker when it was installed?
Have you ever driven a Tacoma that has been tuned?
Can you fit 285/70/17s? On the trd pro wheel. Few other videos say you can
Did you find this out? This is the same lift that the pro has right? I wanna run 285/75/16 but can't find a good answer
why the abs light is on?
You had lots of clearance all the time.
hi, do you know why they don't offer the lift on the long bed version?
bummer...
I'd just buy it and have them install it. No difference between the long bed and short bed other than length of bed
"Let's see how the shocks do" touches throttle and the rear end only hops, no forward go, just up and down 😅. The rear tire was off the ground more than it was on it.
Are we gonna get Ranger Raptor in the 🇺🇸?
wait, is this count dracula's side hustle?
I want it!!!!
This doesn’t come with fog lamps?
I had it installed when my truck was new, 2300.00 installed
Doing the trail prior to lifting would have been nice for comparison
factory lift was nice but I had to go bigger!
Do you know if this is the same kit that comes stock on the TRD Pro?
It’s not the same. The pro’s come with Fox shocks.
I just got mine 6 weeks ago, I have about 2500 miles on it.
1. Seat sucks for tall people, I bought the seat jackers. Still brutal
2. Worst running boards ever. Dealer had already installed them wouldn’t remove them
3. The first 1000miles the stock suspension was super rough, then it softened up a bit.
4. Tires aren’t as bad as they look. Tested in mud and they did ok
Im 6’ 2” and love the seating
I have predator side steps on my Tundra. They do help with getting into the truck but could get in the way of serious off roading.
@@mikefoehr235 i have the same style in the video they’re awful. Too high and tight to the body which is good for ground clearance but they’re awkward to use on egress. And they’re too high for my grandma to use comfortably.
@@cuzz2895 oh really? That’s good you’re comfortable. It hurts my leg pretty badly on long drives
@@louisg8389 If Toyota made a predator side steps with short chain links on the step part, would be better for off roading. Then, the steps would be free to move Or if they modified the steps so that they can removed for off roading...that would really make them that much better.
Few things come to mind -
I consider the side steps to be sacrificial rock sliders. Take an even more aggressive line and you dent or scrape your rockers.
The truck is obviously very capable with even mild tires.
I think offroad tires are a personal choice. The more aggressive you get, the less gas mileage you get, more noise, and not always great in the rain.
I like aggressive tires and tire noise.
off road tires are great in the rain
they suck on dry pavement
@@hayleyandkilo not all offroad tires are created alike
I agree with the sacrificial part about the side steps
Do you need wheel spacers if you get this levelling kit and go up a size from the factory 265/70/16’s to a 265/75/16 ?
Stock suspension can handle 265/75/16... That is however the biggest the stock suspension can support
Why wouldn’t you get the premium package?
Pretty sure you can't use the rear locker and the mts at the same time.
The tradeoff for that weird set position - breakover for days.
I really like the look of the new tacomas, but i just wish it had some better engine options like an small diesel for better fuel economy for overlanding. Specially once you start adding lifts, tires and what not to them.
Just get it tuned. Ever since getting an OV tune my truck drives better and gets better fuel economy.
@@jordanyang3066 but i can get an 1500 with diesel and get better mpg with all the mods. There getting 30mpg highway.
Remember in the old days when the Toyota Pickup had a optional 1 foot of ground clearance?
You mentioned the $1400 price tag for the lift parts…does that mean dealer labor is extra? At $150/hour x 10 hours plus an alignment…are we looking at a $3000 potential total all-in cost? Can we get all the parts that were taken off so we can sell them on eBay to help recover the cost :-)
Where is that trail located? I see y’all have Texas license plates… please let me know.
Great video as always! Love my 2016 TRD Off road LB. Nice to see Toyota is finally adding a lift kit. As you say that's the first mod we all want. Plenty of lift kits out there for $1500. I have 2" Toytec with TRD 17 wheels, KO2 265/70R17s. Why not get the sidesteps? Poor man rock sliders 😉
If you have had the steps, they get caught and bent.
I love how the “off-road” version of this lifted truck doesn’t have fogs... what the heck is that all about.
This factory lift kit deletes the fogs due to sone states laws about lifted trucks and fog lights. This truck without the factory lift would have had fogs
I wanted the off road so bad. But they were either 40k miles used or banged up 😭😭so got the TRD sport instead
Great truck. The next version should address its shortcomings. Better engine/trans, tech/cameras, improved seats/headroom, maybe a front locker option? More off-road gear to compete with Jeep and Ford.
Yes, the engine and transmission in Toyota Tundra are known for their “shortcomings”.........????? WHAT???
@@cerny4444 yes. Lousy gas mileage on the Tundra and weak engine in the the Tacoma. They also need modern transmissions. So yeah the run forever but not without compromises.
@@rlaracue Toyota makes their name on reliability. You don't get reliability by having the "latest and greatest" in unproven tech. The Tundra is due for an update next year. The Tacoma 2024 most likely. I definitely disagree about it being underpowered as well. It's not a V8, but I also didn't buy a mid-size pickup expecting a V8.
i hope you guys do a slip test on it. i really would like to see if crawl control can get you unstuck
21 Taco TRD Pro, 700miles on odo. I buried myself in sand on the beach easing along in 4WH. Tried 4WL. Crawl Control got me right out. (But the noise was nerve-racking!)
There's multiple videos on UA-cam showing it
Anyone know max tire size without rub/cutting with this kit?
From everything I’ve read and seen 265 is the biggest without rubbing. 33’s may not rub going straight down the road but if you do anything like this they will rub when turning and flexing
Try some BFG KO2 265/75/16.
No rubbing and tire is about 1 inch taller. It adds 1/5 inch more ground clearance.

You need to take the same lines with every vehicle so we can see the real comparison in the break over clearance.
And the Taco will still win!
Just read the specs. Those are the numbers. It’s the same as the other vehicles in the class.
@@johnmadsen37 I didn't mention any numbers. I was talking about his comment that the other vehicle scraped and the Toyota didn't but he said he took a different path that had a more aggressive break point. I was saying he should have taken the same path if he wants to compare.
As you mentioned in previous video, 46K and no fog lights??
The fog lights are removed with the lift. Fog lights are normally standard with the TRD Off Road package.
