My first idea was, that a Highway on top of a street could look nice (reminded me of the Subway in Chicago that is on a bridge over a street at least in Blues Brothers ^^), but I think this only fits, if the City groes to a similar size as Chicago. So I would probably prefer the Tunnelsystem.
@@Gamecruser17 it honestly don't fit anywhere imho, i at first had a idea of a muitl-story expressway (think the cypress in san fran before the loma prena earthquake, but its like 8 decks instead of 2 decks), but then i thought about how i would feel when living next to such a monstrosity, and i changed my mind about that.
A lot of American highways split where one side turns into an avenue, and you can tell a secondary highway was built that bypasses the avenue in a very non-elegant way
As an actual City planner with 6 years of experience, I would say you should upgrade the main road into a boulevard. A boulevard is basically a road that acts as an arterial (in your case the highway) as well as a local road. So basically you have the Highway in the middle (i would suggest having a 4 lane high way) and another two lane two way roads on either side which are gonna have the local road connections. Something like this:- (Local)[high][ way](local) The reason I don't suggest having a tunnel or an overpass is because your city is still pretty small to take on such complicated and expensive infrastructure project. When on the other hand a boulevard will only need the construction of normal roads on ground level. But the catch is that you will have to demolishe the Houses on your existing road and your boulevard will be fairly wide. But when your town will slowly develop into a big town, the boulevard will seem more reasonable as it can also act as a central focal point of the city for people to gather and hosting events. Some trees on the roads will create a nice shade for people to walk along the local roads and will make your city feel more walkable. And for the cheery on top add some pedestrian overpasses. Btw I am not a native English speaker so pardon me if I made any grammatical or spelling mistakes. Anyways very entertaining and good video 👍😊
As a couple other people have already said, a deviation along the coast would be a logical way to do it for a smaller town like this one. Eventually a tunnel as well could be an interesting extra, but right now that feels too expensive. On the topic of some more industry I'd suggest setting up a new district on the other side of the Island rather than expanding the port region. As the highway access there will get clogged more easily due to the residential traffic as well. As a final port for the future I think your city has the perfect layout to at one point move in to streetcars/trams where people could move from their residential neighbourhoods along the main avenue of Forrest Street.
Yeah, maybe a bigger town in mainland later. Also, I’d say build the railyard in mainland so the islands space can be used more effectively. Great build as always, happy new year!
The “outbound” rail path cuts through the suburban neighborhoods. Realistically the rail line would be there before the suburbs, so it might look better if the neighborhood was redesigned to treat the rail as having already existed. You’re the best CS 2 UA-camr - love your creations!
Love the way this city is looking! If it were me, I would divert the highway around the city to cut back on noise and polution, or basically because I would love to see how YOU would divert it!! You have such a way with roads and intersections. Love your content.
lil fun fact about that train loop from Rendsburg: underneath the big train bridge dangles a small 'ferry' on steel ropes for cars, pedestrians and cyclists to cross the canal. You can even spot it in the street view image at 3:35. It is free to use and an interesting piece of infrastructure.
Great episode - love the loop solution for the rail, makes sense! If the rail tracks were slightly sunken, you'd only need slightly elevated roads to cross it. For the highway, I think it makes most sense to use a bypass, given the small size of the town and the negative impact of high speed traffic running through or over the town! A tunnel seems crazy expensive.
Building an underground tunnel for the highway is a solid move, especially when dealing with the noise and air pollution it generates. It aligns well with the green theme of the island/region, maintaining a more sustainable approach compared to having an eyesore of an above-ground highway. Putting it on the surface would only divide the island and mess with its aesthetics, as people naturally avoid noisy and unsightly highways. Economically, investing in a tunnel is an investment in the well-being of citizens. It contributes to mental health and happiness, crucial as the region grows and traffic increases. I've experienced living in a city with an elevated highway cutting through it - it's far from pleasant. As for the suggestions to divert the highway around the island, that's just shifting the problem. Sacrificing valuable coastline for a highway isn't a modern solution. It harms the environment, negatively impacting wildlife both on land and in the sea, and takes away a precious space enjoyed by locals, especially during summertime. In the long run, a tunnel seems like the most sensible and considerate choice for the island's future.
Nice to see the night atmosphere in the end shots as well. Most youtubers only use day, which gets a bit monotone after a while. Having all the lights on gives such a different vibe.
You should make the highway (city segment) go in a tunnel, and at each point it transforms to tunnel there should be on-and-off ramps which go into roundabouts
I think the highway should be elevated but not at the place it is currently. The way your city is built suggest that this highway was a national road before and then it has been upgraded to an highway. So to preserve the well being of the population the highway was diverted further to the north-east coast of the island, and to save money there was no bridge built, only a simple embankment which could let some roads cross underneath this highway via shorts tunnels. This is a solution mostly used for railroads as steep slopes is not compatible with trains but it can apply very well for roads or highways too.
The highway you have now is pretty realistic and serves more has a regional highway or in New England and the Mid-Atlantic we call them Parkways usually restricted to just passenger cars (New York has good examples). As the region grows the most American thing to do would be to bulldoze a massive interstate right through the region lol. Maybe even repurposing parts of the Parkway for the interstate and the old parts become arterial roads
My hometown of Valparaiso Indiana has roundabouted all of the major intersections and its been amazing. With the bus service its great, but I was priced out 10 years ago, cant imagine how expensive it is now. So you can do all the roundabouts you want.
If you are looking for more inspiration, i recommend looking at some of the towns and cities that run up the Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island, which is another state in southern New England that borders Massachusetts. Rhode Island was actually shown in this video when you added a map at 0:27, and you can see the bay I am referring to directly above where it says "Rhode Island" and below "Providence". There are many coastal towns and cities such as Newport or Narragansett, or small villages like Pawtuxet Village in Warwick. New England is full of these small towns loaded with history.
Some places in the US absolutely have highways that become avenues like you have here. First expample that comes to mind is the Florida Keys. The main highway essentially becomes the main street of each island with intersections all over the place. Smaller intersections tend to have right turns only onto the "highway" so its more like an on-ramp and larger intersections tend to have lights. What you have here is not entirely unrealistic, esspecially for a city of this size.
What if you have a sunken highway, with roads on either side. Either they go both directions or one goes one way and the other goes the other way. Would be a hell of a project but it might look really awesome. Keep up the good videos! Love them ❤
You should make the highway elevated to start and as your city develops people will complain and then you can make it a tunnel underneath, sticking to the Big Dig inspiration
I agree with most other comments, i think elevating the highway would be the most economical while leaving flexibility for the future. I agree that the train yard for this region would likely not be on any of the small islands, including chowder bay. Maybe a larger island or the mainland if possible. looking forward to more industrial expansion and downtown upgrades! as for names, i think a mayflower or plymouth street (or lesser known New England bound ships from the past) would be fitting.
3:45 - Rendsburg was the first thing that came to my mind when you started explaining. Oh yeah, and you better be sorry for butchering the name, because you really.. ahhh just kidding :) Happy New Year!
In CS2 I've found 7.5m works for road and rail bridges as standard. Anything higher starts to look a bit over-the-top and forces slopes that are too steep if the surrounding area is confined. In the UK the standard clearance is 5.03m over roads. From the info I've found, clearance for rail is between 4-5m, with closer to 5 being for rail tracks with overhead electrification. In the US I believe it's slightly less at 4.9m, at least when going over interstates, and from what I can gather 7-8m when going over rail tracks, with closer to 8 being the case when it comes to overhead electrification.
Disconnecting residents from their waterfront. How 1950s of you.... Don't worry, one day in the 1990s that train track will be demolished and turned into a waterfront linear park connecting residents with their long lost nautical past. If you're lucky they might even build a ferris wheel to attract tourists.
American highways aren't as chaotic as you seem to think. The "messy" interchanges are built the way they are because they have to be to fit the need, not because transportation departments have giant bags of cash to waste. Just be honest and admit YOU love messy roads...😝
I love how honest you are when you speak about the US and all it's faults and short comings when it comes to our infrastructure 😂 I really enjoy all your content ..
I would say expand a bit more into the higher mountain ranges, using dirt roads, and occasionally sprinkle a few houses here and there, it could definitely show more rural development up on the higher terrain.
Tunnel the highway. Frankly I never like highways that split cities apart. Ive always hated highways IRL and want them as hidden as possible. At least that's what I do in my cities.
I'm all for the elevated highway exactly where Forest Street is. The crossways connections can run under the highway and the road above Forest can be the main road.
What about placing the railyard in the area where you have the train loop after the brigde? It would be a dedicated facility that is pretty far from the main city and will justify the loop more then just a way to deal with heights. It may be a challenge to fit such a building on a rough terrain in that area, but I think it will look great)
Could make the highway like the downtown of my city Providence, RI. The highway is lowered, not a tunnel but with walls on either side and the cross streets go over it at ground level. Could also widen crest st to make it more of a main avenue
I think a big dig sort of project is way too big for such a small island, but maybe make it sunken kinda like the I90 in Mercer Island. It's on the wrong coast but I think it fits the landscape and scale perfectly. Alternatively, elevated makes more sense than tunnel.
a good compromise with the train stations and rail yards would be train stations supplying only one train, so rail yards were not necesary but helpful for busier stations
There's an East Haven in Connecticut as well. It fits well into your theme for this City. Might want to Google Earth around there as well, since it does have a fairly large port and industry in the area. They also have Bridgeport, Black Rock, Fairfield, Westport, Easton, Clinton, Old Lyme, New Haven, West Haven, East Haven, and North Haven. :)
oh hey! im from this region! some advice on real life towns/cities to take inspiration from is fall river, bristol, and newport. they all have roughly this same density, and similar, if not, weirder, road layouts! also to help refine where a city like this would be located, i dont think it would be near marthas vineyard or nantucket (the islands of the coast of massachusetts) because those need a ferry ride to get to and have little rail infrastructure. however, i think south eastern rhode island would be a great fit for this city! theres loads of bridges connecting the islands, they all connect back to mainland rhode island and massachusetts, and there is rail infastructure that exsits there.
Love this series! I think a highway bridge would be cool. Would be kinda like the Gardner expressway in Toronto so it kinda future proofs the city. As your city builds an elevated highway is so cool to drive on.
I can't speak for the Boston area of Massachusetts but there are roundabouts at least in Western Mass. They are usually for bigger intersections/ highway exits.
In south sweden, Blekinge to be exact, or at least I think so. They are currently rebuilding a highway because it also used to be a small road going through a town. Basically like your road but it’s only 2 lanes. You might be able to copy that or learn from it.
If you're making smaller islands and towns then highway turning into an avenue is realistic. Perhaps after couple of towns grow the size of easthaven, there will be a larger highway project where it is either elevated or bypasses the main avenue completely.
I think that in this stage, the highway has to be above forest street. In the future, when city turn in metropoli, then buried the Highway in a tunel and make a reinvestment with green spaces, big parks in that place with high level buildings around
i say elevate, makes for really cool neighbourhoods, especially since the cities are on islands which means the ground water levels will be high so building a highway underground will probably end up costing more than an elevated one
Anyone else notice how cinematic mode almost never works smoothly? Drives me crazy, I love the cinematic tool but it's so hard to keep it from doing some sort of tearing, rubber banding or another sort of graphic issue... Love this game and I cannot wait for better optimization so everything works as intended. Love your Videos Infrastructurist, beautiful builds as always!
i think it is better for the port to have an asphalt surface instead of grass especially knowing that the port is industrial area and doesn't need grass to make it beautiful
I think the highway bypass should run along one of the coasts to go around the town/island completely. Seems like the most reasonable project for a city of this size to implement rather than paying for bridges or tunnels!
Realistically, a small city wouldn't build a massive highway bridge or tunnel going right through the city. In America, highways are often built to go around city centers or on the edges of small towns if at all possible. So I would build the highway as a bypass on the edge of the island and divert it around the city.
As far as the highway goes, I think the American solution would be a limited access bypass "beltway" around the back end of town... could include elevated or tunnel sections as well.
I wish they had fences in this game. I plopped a botanical garden and made pathways around it and planted trees. But there was no way for me to make a boundary so people from the street wouldnt just walk in without paying at the front door. So Im not sure how to break that up. Another thing, I like the road you make to make a sea wall (forgot what its called) but I dont like how there is no fence or wall. In this case, Im not sure whats better, the road you have or making a walk path below grade and then flooding it to make a very nice, thin, wall.
I think it's probably more likely that they'd make the central highway elevated. Making the highway a sunken highway on such a short stretch of land only for it to come back up to bridge height will probably make for some crazy inclines
Hi Infra! I wanted to suggest a name for a smaller island in the area. I‘m from Germany and one island in the north-sea is called Sylt. The island is a famous tourist-attraction and there are many beaches and stuff. Maybe you could transform one of the islands to a touristic type district, and call it Sylt or something…😊 P.S. been waiting for you‘re vids the whole time!!!🤝
If you want to change the highway to avenue configuration because you’re worried about traffic then I say sure however if this is based on a us city then I can say with confident it’s not at all weird for highways to turn into avenues especially if the highway isn’t the main and most direct way of going north south or east west. If you plan on turning it into a highway it kinda has to be elevated because the island would be at sea level and it would be a costly venture to make tunnels at the elevation. I think however that because of the size of the islands I would keep density and heights to a minimum and just make small towns throughout the county but maybe you can reclaim Some land to make it justified to having the island with higher density! Your videos make my day man! Hope you have a good start to your new year!
Just like you said that tunneling the train or highway would be too expensive for the area given its population, i think the highway exists from the memorial bridge and all the bridge roads that cross over the train tracks are too complex and expensive for the area. This islands population is not very big. I think it makes more sense to have all the roads to be at-grade crossings. The bridges dont make sense. At most, pedestrian bridges are as far as i would go.
Hi! Very valid points, and I agree! I think the ultimately I have made the city more "future proof" than it needs to be atm - as with time, Chowder Bay will continue to grow and likely be the capital of Easthaven County. Small city for now though!
@@Infrastructurist ah this makes more sense! I wasnt sure what your plans were for the island. I assumed you were going to keep it as a little hamlet in which case the infrastructure would be more industrial and less “convenient”. Also you’re one of my most favorite YT to watch for CS. Keep it up man! I’m not sure but do you have a discord for your community? EDIT: elevate the highway. If your longterm plans for chowder bay is to grow large in scale, then go ahead and future proof the highway now as well. Tunneling the highway will probably cause entry/ exit problems in the future as traffic grows
I agree, not all highways needs to have exits in all different directions. It's okay for cars to drive of one exit and then take different roads to get where they are going. You can't have on exit for each street just so the cars goes directly to where they want.
I think you should make a big park with sporting areas such as a running track, football pitches, a botanical garden and forest. This idea is from the Queens Domain area in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia 🇦🇺.
Pretty cool you know about roundabouts being called rotaries, i haven't lived in Massachusetts for a while now so I've been missing out of seeing the signs for them
Hey. I have a suggestion for an industriepark. I work at BASF in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. It is the largest connected Chemical Plant in the world. Perhaps you could build something like that.
It could be interesting to see a kind of peripheric highway (as in Paris of Brussels), maybe not on this Island but for a bigger city, On this island it could be possible but not really pertinent because of the size of it I love your videos man :)
I think another interesting Highway solution would be to send on direction through the town and above the then old Highway while the other one goes around the suburbs. My reasoning would be that the elevation is to steep for a tunnel and that its too expensive. Also there is no support for such a big project inside the town.
You should leave the central avenue as it is realistic that a main road slows down as it goes through the middle of the town and shows how the city as grown off this central road.
If I could add my $.02, I would rather see the elevated highway, for a couple reasons. 1. I think it would be more challenging, the dig would be fairly easy whereas the elevated highway would need more planning to implement properly. 2. In terms of realism, I think those with the purse would probably choose elevated over dug in because of the huge cost difference between the two. 3. Lastly, I feel like most of the time I’ve seen people dig in the highway, and I would really appreciate the differentiation and variety
Looking at American history, I think the most realistic thing for the highway would be to just plow it right through one of the neighborhoods on either side of the current main avenue. Long bridge spans are expensive, tunnels even moreso and both would likely be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
I can't wait for your suggestions for the revamp of the central avenue/highway! And I would appreciate a Like 👍 if you enjoyed the video! 😊

Your builds are so inspirational. I think you should do a double tunnel for the two lanes under to keep the nice mainstreet feel.
It looks like a heart with veins around it when you zoom out at the end! 🫀
Elevated Highway will look really awesome. The bridge can continue on the same level, and the city can sprawl comfortably underneath.
Not me living near Rendsburg 😂 Love the execution of yours. Greetings from Germany ;)

Awesome video/series/channel but nowhere near enough catJAM :P
oh hey! im from this region! some advice on real life towns/cities to take inspiration from is fall river, bristol, and newport. they all have roughly this same density, and similar, if not, weirder, road layouts! also to help refine where a city like this would be located, i dont think it would be near marthas vineyard or nantucket (the islands of the coast of massachusetts) because those need a ferry ride to get to and have little rail infrastructure. however, i think south eastern rhode island would be a great fit for this city! theres loads of bridges connecting the islands, they all connect back to mainland rhode island and massachusetts, and there is rail infastructure that exsits there.
Always makes my day when I see an upload from you. :-D
Dude,,,, that spagetti interchange was beautiful... to bad you didn't make it a asset before destroying it 😌
In south sweden, Blekinge to be exact, or at least I think so.
Your voice kinda reninds me about EthosLab the Minecraft UA-camr. Calm and friendly voice ❤️
i say elevate, makes for really cool neighbourhoods,
especially since the cities are on islands which means the ground water levels will be high so building a highway underground will probably end up costing more than an elevated one
Seems like the most reasonable project for a city of this size to implement rather than paying for bridges or tunnels!
ty for the VOD. 🥃🥃
Sunken highway seems interesting to build!
He can't keep getting away with calling all ports "southport" and "northport" !
Watch him 🖤
That tunnel sounds awesome. Also can you build some small villages on the other islands?
11:28 please make that a roundabout that is going to be the most chaotic intersection ever
I think however that because of the size of the islands I would keep density and heights to a minimum and just make small towns throughout the county but maybe you can reclaim
Some land to make it justified to having the island with higher density! Your videos make my day man! Hope you have a good start to your new year!
Endelig en ny video 💪 lige i rette tid, til cardio i morgen på trapperne 😎
Do a "big dig", you've aready done all the connections on one side of town, so it wouldn't require massive on/off-ramps on the other side of town.
I love your channel 🎉
Been waiting for soooooo long ❤
I think you should make a big park with sporting areas such as a running track, football pitches, a botanical garden and forest.
You should build the railyard away from the town, and area that can be expanded to by industry, or a tiny town in the future.
Elevated highways scream massive American cities to me personally (:
I think you should elevate it because there’s high bridges on both ends and it wouldn’t make sense to have that deep elevation change so quickly
If you do the big dig, it'd be cool if the highway goes under a harbor and popped-out by the airport.
It could be interesting to see a kind of peripheric highway (as in Paris of Brussels), maybe not on this Island but for a bigger city, On this island it could be possible but not really pertinent because of the size of it
I love your videos man :)
Good rail placement I was thinking the same thing.
The highway should keep running through town with off ramps left and right to service roads like in Texas that run parallel
I think another interesting Highway solution would be to send on direction through the town and above the then old Highway while the other one goes around the suburbs. My reasoning would be that the elevation is to steep for a tunnel and that its too expensive. Also there is no support for such a big project inside the town.
I like the idea of a Big Dig, but I like the look of stacked highways better.
Here on Oahu in Hawaii, H1 runs directly above a road just like you suggested called Nimitz.
Will you continue your CS 1 series? I know they don't get as many views as CS2, but I really like them. They were the best on UA-cam.🤩
It would be so cool if you could fill that rail loop with housing, like like in Rendsburg.
A bypass highway over Franklin Street! I think that would look really cool!!
The highway should be elevated. Layers of height are always a nice aesthetic in SC. :)
Looking at American history, I think the most realistic thing for the highway would be to just plow it right through one of the neighborhoods on either side of the current main avenue.
Long bridge spans are expensive, tunnels even moreso and both would likely be avoided unless absolutely necessary.
