  • The Homestead Trio sings "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" on Edison Blue Amberol 3249.
The singers are Gladys Rice, Amy Ellerman, and Betsy Lane Shepherd.
The song is by Ballard MacDonald and James F. Hanley.
I view "(Back Home Again In) Indiana" as the most durable song of the 20th century.
    It has a PERFECT melody.
    I have always been a wand'rer
    Over land and sea
Yet a moonbeam on the water
    Casts a spell o'er me
    A vision fair I see
    Again I seem to be
    Back home again in Indiana,
And it seems that I can see
The gleaming candlelight, still shining bright,
    Through the sycamores for me.
The new-mown hay sends all its fragrance
From the fields I used to roam.
When I dream about the moonlight on the Wabash,
Then I long for my Indiana home.
    Fancy paints on mem'ry's canvas
    Scenes that we hold dear
We recall them in days after
    Clearly they appear
    And often times I see
A scene that's dear to me
This is a rare version of the classic song since all lyrics are sung! We hear both verses in addition to the well-known chorus. It is too bad this performance is on a Blue Amberol of the World War I years--thin, wobbly sound! These dubbed Blue Amberol cylinders are far inferior in sound to Victor discs of the era.
This is an important recording since it is a very early rendition (the earliest on record?) of the song that could be viewed as the song-of-the-century (can there be such a thing?). It would be difficult to overestimate the song's importance to jazz, especially as a dixieland favorite. It even evolved into a bebop standard, "Donna Lee" (credited to Miles Davis though having the characteristics of a dozen earlier Charlie Parker tunes).
The Edison female group labeled the Homestead Trio consisted of soprano Gladys Rice, soprano Betsy Lane Shepherd, and contralto Amy Ellerman.
The trio recorded 22 titles for issue on Diamond Discs, beginning with "Indiana," which was issued in 1917 on the reverse side of Vernon Dalhart's Diamond Disc debut, "Can't Yo' Heah Me Callin', Caroline?" (80334).
"Indiana" was also issued on a Blue Amberol cylinder (a dubbing from the Diamond Disc).
Other titles include "Hearts" (50612), issued in 1919, and "Little Tin Soldier" (50770), issued in 1921. In 1921, Elizabeth Spencer replaced Gladys Rice.
