Former Dark Knight main, now Gunbreaker main; Dark Knight is literally the same as Warrior, except Dark Knight has magic Shintens, is somehow a summoner now even though Dark Knight was never know for being a pet class to begin with, and is equally boring to play as Warrior. Gunbreaker sucks until you get Continuation and I really wish they added more Continuation skills SPECIFICALLY for pre-level 50 content so that way it makes level sync feels less mind numbing.
I came to XIV as a PLD stan in pretty much every game from D&D to FFXI and I stand by my sword and board to the bitter end. I admire the DRK and GNB OGCD game and the WAR self healing, but nothing beats the classic knight in shining armor in my book.
There’s no better feeling then the self-satisfaction knowing that person would’ve assuredly died to the raidwide if not for the mitigation you, the tank, put out.
It still cracks me up to this day how when my friends suggested me to play XIV I had absolutely 0% knowledge about the game and the rest of the saga and I vividly remember only asking "Alright, what's the class with the highest HP?" and they told me it was Marauder/Warrior, that was it... and so I've been playing nothing but WAR for almost 5 years hahahahaha. Thrill of Battle, Equilibrium, Nascent Flash and recently Raw Intuition/Bloodwhetting are why I play this game gameplay wise
I totally feel it, i used to be a healer and tank main in mmos but FF14 was my favorite to heal in. And then suddenly every tank was starting to be good and i didn't even need to heal them, thus making the dps as a healer was extremely boring. I decided to continue the warrior i had started from the last time i quit the game (played lots of pally and Gun) aaaaaaand i strictly main warrior 🤣 (well i don't play ff anymore but still, whenever/ if ever i return im still one tricking warrior xD)
I like tanking in this game because I find the DPS rotation is kind of a perfect sweet spot for me. The rotations aren't as crazy as melee DPS. I guess I just prefer simple rotations. But even at higher level the rotations get pretty fast paced which is interesting.
After playing warrior a ton in FF14, I now play tanks in basically every RPG that has them. It’s just really fun for me, the feeling of being completely indestructible, and I don’t mind the trade-off of usually being slower and less damaging.
Well, he's not wrong about proving something. It's probably because people walk around in circles following each other repeating "PLD bad", without understanding why. But hey, there is some toxic satisfaction about taking aggro from better geared GNB or DRK without provoke or throwing would be MT, half-dead and covered in vuln stacks cheeky cover or pity shield to let them survive next mechanic, while you take the reins.
As a Dark Knight main, what I really don't get about the Paladin hate is how Paladin and Warrior are practically identical in the whole "Let me solo the boss" meme, only Paladin's kit is better in some ways. People shit on Paladin saying things like "The dps is so bad! Paladin players are so self righteous with their self healing!" But the same people will treat Warrior like a god saying things like "Warriors are so badass, they can solo the boss, easy! I get disappointed when I have to heal a tank that isn't a Warrior." First of all, Warrior DPS has often been the lowest. I don't follow meta enough to know the specifics now, but as far as I know that's been the standard, even so far back as Shadowbringers. Second, Paladins have much more healing resources than Warrior. Paladin's Blade of Faith combo heals them, they have Clemency, an ability that they can pretty much use any time considering the only way you could ever run out of MP on Paladin is if you're spamming that ability, and the instant cast phase makes it crit, and you get 5 of those instant cast crits. Not to mention that they have Hallowed Ground, the only true invuln for tank that prevents damage entirely. Hell, they even have a Stun that's longer than Low Blow by an extra second and is on a GCD cooldown! Warrior has Bloodwhetting, which is basically like The Blackest Night with a Bloodbath buff on top because why not. I'm not sure if it's still this way, but at launch whenever I was playing it you could literally heal your entire hp bar in a wall to wall pull. That is undoubtedly a very good ability, and then you also have Equilibrium, which is an instant cast heal with a regen now. Those are both good- and honestly, whenever I first picked Warrior again in Endwalker I felt it had more self sustain than Paladin. But the rest of the self sustain is where it kind of falls apart compared to Paladin. Paladin has a Blade of Faith combo to heal them, but Warrior has no heal for Inner Release. Paladin's invuln allows them to take no damage, while Warrior's invuln only prevents them from going below the very bottom of their HP. I just can't understand how Warrior is paraded as the absolute god of self-sustain, with a weaker kit, while Paladin, the king of self sustain, is viewed as inferior and considered stuck up for pulling the same exact flex Warriors pull when the party's down. Can someone explain this to me?
@@williamkraut5849 im a PLD main. A couple of things to note, the shield stun take a gcd, so its usually not worth it to use unless youre in a pinch and need to stun mobs bc the healer is struggling. Also. Req no longer makes clem crit. That was done away with in Endwalker. But the reason people celebrate Warriora sustain is just due to the fact that they have more optimally usuable sustain, meaning, they never have to lose damage to heal. Paladins will lose damage if we clem, atleast, we lose a gcd, which is significant when it comes to damage output. However, i still like paladins healing style over Warriors since its more usable to help a struggling party. This is in fact why i love paladin over warrior, because paladin is the best tank to protect your party, and not just yourself. I dont get why people hate paladins. I love everything about paladin, tho i would make some changes with some skills if i could.
@@Trapp_ i think i just disagree with his take so much because i just honestly think everyone else is just factually incorrect when they say PLD is bad. Its a fully functional tank, with its person focus being on extra party defensives, which are ideal during prog. What they actually mean is that they dont understand how to play it well. Ive done everthing, expecially endwalker content as PLD and i find it performs quite well regardless of the situation. Defensively its better than ever. Offensively, still viable (sure could use a buff, or rework, but outside of p8s, i never felt the need to switch to my drk for damage purposes.) And for party utility? Simply the best. Yes its the most hard to optimize offensively, so i understand why people dont like to play it as much, but that doesnt make the job bad, it just makes it more difficult.
I play PLD as my primary tank, and the entire reason I was drawn to it was the intense mitigation for myself and others to help make the job easier for healers. Justifiably using passage of arms, cover, or clemency to smooth over any rough patches feels amazing and offsets how ridiculously strict the PLD rotation is. The one thing that helped me overcome tankxiety, especially when playing with pugs, is knowing I have a kit that can keep myself and others alive even when things go to shit.
I think that's what a lot of people like, and a lot of people don't appreciate enough. Not every button in a kit needs to be used regularly for it to be a good addition to the kit. The simple fact of the matter is things can, will, and do go wrong from time to time and when you can pull out your pocket heal and save it, it's nice to have.
@@Lawlsomedude Years ago since I started raiding and parcing hard I’ve yet to have clemency on my bar even after running through content on PLD and it never hinders it just kills ur uptime. But sure have it on pre end game but when you hit end game that should not be on your hot bar imo. But to each their own I said it wrong by making it seem like I’m forcing him to take it off that’s my bad I recommend deleting it from existence in end game. Kills dps for PLD hate seeing when people use it and that’s why if you have ever seen people raiding when clearing ULTIMATES and SAVAGE only the ones that play the game for the story purposes use it.
@@brandonallen3075 If I cared about parsing or raiding then I'd just play GNB. You're not allowed to make any of the mistakes that PLD's kit could fix in ultimates or most savage fights anyway so most of PLD's kit no more useful than GNB's. But in lower content and with uncoordinated teams there's a significant chance massive mistakes can still be a clear, namely if healers die and can't be rezed, with use of Clemency.
As someone who almost exclusively spends my time fishing in ff14, has completed the fishing log, and started as a paladin and played all the msq as one, 3:29 hits me differently
I have loved fishing more and more each time I go ocean fishing and it’s very enjoyable. I wish I could level up my botanist and miner as fast I do fisher but those just aren’t as fun
I started ff14 many years ago by looking up guides and seeing the tanks. Their armor looked dope and their weapons looked even cooler. So I started as a warrior in ARR, then Drk in HW, pal in stb, and finally...the best boy...gnb in shb and ew. Something about gnb just speaks to me. The 2 min burst window. The seemless double weaves. The ability to give healers heart attacks...I love all of it. Now I am a face rolling keyboard gnb till ff14 ends.
you made me hungry and also made me remember that i didnt actually realise i was a "tank" until my first level 50 dungeon when someone said "hey pld, good job tanking!" and i sat back in my chair thinking "oh fuck, im a tank"
i was doing ExDeath normal and all the party died except for the tanks at 10%, me (drk) the and paladin were able to finish it fine, clemency really came in clutch there tho
I really loved the video! it's like nothing on the FF tube and i dearly enjoy this style, thank you a lot King! When you said "No one becomes a tank by choice" i knew you were spitting facts, literaly me and my Pal. You know what you're sayn 100%
I went into FF14 wanting to main a tank when I found out gun blades were a thing and they were exclusive to a tank class…then I found out you have to get to the second expansion to play as one. So instead I learned to love Paladin and Warrior instead. It’s fun being the most important person in the party, having slap fights with the boss since everybody else is way too squishy to handle the pulse pounding Patty Cake.
I was never a tank main before FFXIV. I was always the typical damage dealer and when I played dancer and reaper I thought I would finally have a main. But recently I tried out the DRK again who I only touched briefly back then at the end of Heavensward. I main DRK now, love everything about it, from class fantasy to the gear. Sometimes you gotta be open for new things. Even if you are always been a certain type of role... just try it out. FFXIV might surprise you!
I can confirm something similar happened to me. A friend was walking me through the character reaction and was telling (somewhat badly) about the different classes and jobs. well he stepped away and I was like swords look cool and became a gladiator. I didn't know it was a tank but was quickly told. however, I fell in love. I am absolutely a PLD main. I would say I am not what you described in the video and yet I probably do act like I have something to prove. idk haha. but I do very much enjoy the class.
I've been pretty much dpsing exclusively since I started playing last year. I levelled up drk because I needed a tank but it just didn't click with me even if it felt close enough to a dps. Recently I levelled up gnb and I'm in love with it, it feels a bit boring in dungeons but in single target bosses/raids/etc it feels so much more fun. I'm a ranged phys main so I really enjoy all the weaving without worrying about MP unlike drk. I have yet to even get job stones for the other two but I wonder if they'll be any similar -also something about gnb aesthetic and animations are oddly attractive in a way I can't explain. Sexiest tank.-
Proud main tank here, been playing tank and choosing tank since day one, there is something about being the big dependable dude that says "I got your back" when the shit hits the fan that speaks to me in a deep level. Also I leveled all the tanks, when it was time to go from the free account to the expansion I took gunbreaker out of a sense of duty, I wasn't really interested in the class at first I just tought to myself "I'm not worthy to calm myself main tank until I played them all" and was surprised of how much I enjoyed the job. Still warrior/dark knight main mostly.
I got in as a warrior, and ever since fancied myself a Tank main (despite having only warrior rn with the other tanks at lv 60. I'm leveling all tanks last cause I enjoy it the best.) It's not about being a dungeon leader or anything fancy like that for me tho, but more of because I like the idea that being face to face with your foe gives a sort of romantic thrill for me. XD
I enjoyed the content of the video (and the music at the end!) but I have to mention that that picture on the bottom left of Y'shtola and your WoL is so cute! 🥺
The PLD salt!!! 🤣 I've met two types of PLDs. What you described and kind, meek permanent OTs that opt for Cover rather than a tank swap. Most have been what you said... but the latter hold a dear place in my DRK heart.
You have no idea how many times I see a DRK hit me with the blackest knight and I shed a tear of joy and purposely slide /salute in between the tank buster and my combo. - Me a paladin MT main.
I'm normally a dps thief battle mage kinda guy but xiv was the first game where both class I wanted to be (DRK and GNB) were the two classes I wanted to play from the start, I was more excited about big buster sword but soon found out that its story locked, where as GNB was only lvl locked, so I spent 3 weeks doing nothing but old main scenario roulette (back when it was 8 man) till I got to 60, grabbed gnb, and it's been my main ever since, even after unlocking and lvling drk I've just loved how flashy fast and fluid gunbreaker feels, and I'm a sucker for those animations
I chose gladiator not thinking about roles and ended up falling in love with tank, moving on to dark knight as soon as I could. Big sword? Basically a magical girl in lore? What’s not to love?
Back when HW released and was on it's hype phase, my friends had me try out the game. I started out as a MAR/WAR because "lol big axe" and not even knowing what kind of MMO this was. I've only ever played RuneScape back in '07 & '09 so I had no concept of class roles. When I entered Tam Tara, that was when I was educated about my role - to keep enemies attacking me. Hell, I didn't even do my job quests until I was well into my level 40s when a random person met me outside the dungeon and led me to get my job crystal. I mained WAR well into StB where I did and completed my first savage tiers. ShB was when I picked up GNB and decided to main it during tier 2. I haven't looked back since. I love GNB so much ^.^
I mean, paladin's gimmick is a knight in shining armor. They have shields and have more than one ability with the potential of helping protect their team. They're a holy knight and have the flare of one.
Originally fully intended to start as WAR, but was dead set on starting in Gridania... So I ended up starting as DRG instead, with the intention of switching over to WAR and later DRK asap. (I've pretty much been a tank main in every MMO I've played since WoW and FFXI)
Good content man, keep it up. I was a warrior main but changed to monk because of pressure and still learning the dungeons :O i should get back into tanking!!!
Just started leveling Dark Knight. Tanking is not easy, but the challenge is what makes it fun, and actually knowing the fights AND being able to actually make a real difference through placement and whatnot does make it very fulfilling
Read the tilte. Need to say tanking in WoW is much more intense and fun. Final Fantasy tanking feels clunky and slow... in WoW you are actually a TANK you can do things, you can be a wall that dies last. Final Fantasy tanking is ... well you get less dmg and deal less dmg... But the feeling to realy do something to keep you alive is ... weird... Just rotate through your 60+sec cooldowns and be happy... while in WoW you just die when you miss a second of active mitigation. (We dont talk about GW2 tanking here... thats just .... well another lvl of yaaaaaaaawn) For those people that wanna call out something now like "mimimi than you didnt do any endgame content" ofc i did. I did mythic content in WoW and the extreme Content in FF. The overall Mechanics are nice in both! I like playing both of the games. Just the tanking in special is in FF realy realy realy realy simple and broke down to small parts of real "tanking". (and throwing out a 10% hp shield, or 10% magic dmg reduction doesnt feel as good as saving a special person with a paladin blessing in WoW or mitigate a dead healer as paly tank, or be the person that actually deals a 1v1 situation with a boss and perfectly time every gc'd as blood dk to get the last 3% of a boss down... just one slip and it would be ruined...) Tanking in WoW just feels like beeing a indestructable beeing. Tanking in FF is more in the oldschool fashion (that is still okay! just not realy special)
The one small thing I should clarify: I don't hate Paladin (The Job) I mostly dislike Paladin players I find in Duty Finder. I've had people who main Paladin just be... the worst.
Hello. I am Izela and a PLD main. Not all of us are terrible :D we just probably aren't seen as much because the bad ones stick out more than the good ones haha.
@@izelaazsha5744 i cant disagree or invalidate his personal experiences, but i wont say that his personal views are reflective of the overall community. Im a PLD main myself and have ran into many others that i can tell either mained or just played PLD alot and im certain ive never come to the conclusion that PLDs are typically more toxic than other tanks. I just think that entire idea is just false. But if thats been his personal experience then thats his personal experience. I just dislike how he tries to state it like a fact
At first I started FFXIV as a Black Mage since it was one of my favorite job in the Final Fantasy Franchise, and after ARR, I decided to do every extension with the dedicated job the WOL is supposed to use. I was a Dragoon during Heavensward, a Samurai during Stormblood and then... Shadowbringer. I fell in love with Dark Knight and it became my main job, and since the friends I was playing with were a Healer main and a DPS main, I was happily greeted as a Tank main, especially since the next extension made me use Paladin too. Now I love every Tank job, and my though about them are: DRK : My favorite. Highest DPS among Tanks, perfect for being 2nd Tank in raids to add both damage on the boss and mitigation on your Main tank to help them but need a good healer to be used as a main tank due to it's lack of self heal, especially if you need to trigger your Invulnerability skill since your healer will NEED to heal the f*ck out of you to keep you alive. PLD : A lot of mitigation, either on you or your friends. The best Invulnerability skill in the whole game, but also the longest cooldown. Lowest DPS, but probably has the most OGCD rotations of all, with great AOE skills to keep all ennemies focused on you. Also has the most visually impressive mitigation in the game "Passage of arms". WAR : A Sage's best friend as their need to get healed is minimum during dungeons. The more they hit, the more they heal, meaning that you barely need any help during mob pulls. Their invulnerability is just making them too angry to die. GNB : A bit of all of the above, but you need to know what you do for a real good rotation as you'll be rolling your head onto your keyboard. They hit pretty hard, they can heal themselves, they can take damages, and as long as you know what you're doing you'll always feel in control of what happens to you with a way to respond to it. Tanks are great as long as you're ready to take the lead of the fight. And if you don't feel like a leader, feel free to ask for advices. Your healer is your best friend, so don't hesitate in warning them if you need advice or a more focused healing on you.
I started XIV as a Bard. I wanted to plink around with the performance actions. When we started actually doing and paying attention to the MSQ, I leveled NIN since it sounded fun, and it was. But Tank was always my favorite role in WoW and as soon as I could access Dark Knight, that became my main job and still is. I've leveled almost every other job, some are more interesting, more involved. But DRK is still the best. The best weapons, the coolest skill effects and a toolset that just works. The update to living dead a few months back was way beyond icing on the cake, it's a whole new cake for the DRK to eat. Also, Tank LB3, no matter which job you are, feels fucking awesome when it's needed.
I originally came to ffxiv to heal, as I was a mercy/lucio main in Overwatch and my brother said conjury would be best for me. 5 years later and here I am as an omni-tank (mainly gnb). Its crazy how things change.
I started as a Gladiator for PLD because I like tanking, (and it's my favorite DnD tank) and I mained it all the way through to ShB. Switched over to DRK in EW because damn I like pressing buttons. It makes my smooth brain happy. For the record, I don't ever try to hog mt unless my HP is higher. Usually come to some sort of arrangement in raids with my co tank. Yes even when I was a PLD. I also used clemency and cover on my healers (woah crazy I know)
I started FFXIV with the Arcanist and when I discovered the Scholar, I thought I was made to be a healer main But i swear, the moment I started to play DRK something in me was awoken and I could never go back. I was still a bit too insecure about my tanking skills to do djs, but I started to play more and more with the job (and sometimes switch to Gunbreaker) to the point where it was by far my most played class in ShB. Now, I think my favorite role to take is still tank, I do most trials and raids with my DRK.
At first i started as a dragoon then quit the game for quite a while after that i made a new character in a new server a gladiator I was scared as fuck to play as a tank to fuck it up in duty finder But comunity here was so god damn friendly i managed to learn how to tank in the best way possible As a pld main my job is to keep people alive
I mained dark knight through stormblood and loved it! I admit, I still have quite a bit of tanxiety when playing the role but when I do it’s some of the most fun in the game. Before living dead was reworked it was fun to be the last one standing, pop living dead, beat the boss and the collapse as soon as it registered that the boss was defeated like some anime character. I also miss the old animation for the aggro combo where the dark knight fired a blast out of their left hand like Guts’s cannon arm.
I started as Bard (still my first love), and I started Warrior as an alt job because I didn't like healing and wanted some variety from all the DPS jobs I'd picked up. It was fine, but it wasn't until I got Dark Knight that I fell in love, and if I wasn't still Bard main it would be Dark Knight for sure. I don't know why, I just love how it plays. Warrior is great for sustain, but DRK is just so much fun. Big effing sword for the win!
Exactly the same story for me as how I ended up starting. Between namedays and your chosen god and other sorts of RP elements that seemed necessary, yet confusing... I picked Ax man, because Ax man swing ax, ax man no think, ax man hit hard. That and it fit with my "just off the boat" start and story. Then later I find out that oh, I'm supposed to be the leader of the bunch for dungeons... and trials... ahahah... But I grew into it and loved it, and I got WAR to 80 in 5.4... when I was still in Heavansward MSQ. But being the wall felt satisfying and fun, and I ended up levelling all the tanks to 90 after I had a healer and two DPS levelled. Finally, there's nothing better than tanking objectively. How? How many classes get mounts via achievements just by playing them? Each tank gets 2, with WHM getting 1 (and BLU, but you can play BLU as tank #5 as well)
I tend to level all jobs in FFXIV but I always go back home to tanking. Been playing MMOs for a long time now...this is the first MMO where I've taken up the role and because of it, I typically go for a tank-style in other games now too. DRK has always been my favorite class in all of FF but I find myself gravitating to WAR in FFXIV the most. It's just something about being an angry, spin-top, rage-monster that runs head first into combat smashing and cutting like a chainsaw. But they can also defend and heal themselves and others. The self-sustain is a huge plus for me personally. I also love when I go into dungeons and healers are like, "oh, I can kick back. We have a WAR." 😆
getting that first paladin move set down and cutting loose with it always felt freeing. I am the storm, to defeat this party, you have to deal with me first.
genuinely love the distinction between paladins and dark knights, like one is the poster boy of the mmo, the other is a fucking raccoon you found killing people (it's me I'm the dark knight, I'm the DPS raccoon that ended up taking things into my own hands)
As somone who started as Gladiator, cuz, sward And brand new to mmos, not knowing what to expect... yea i stumbled into the Tank role .--.; Wasn't until Odin taught me the hard way, that there was much more to tanking Fun full story, Odin was the first boss/dungeon/trial to make me learn and manage cooldowns, the rest of ARR was just so barebones. Once i got the refresher, and some nasty looks from my party, i took a break from the game, came back leveled up Ninja, then later went back to Tanking with Gunbreaker, now with better understanding, really enjoying being the punching bag for my team.
look man, im just trying to benedict my healer and cover that dps who failed the mech im literary just trying my best here edit: *intervention, why do i keep remember it as benediction
@@never5930 yeah, i wouldnt sweat it haha i know he just joking, a bit awkward checking a video from creators i never knew before, only to be told the one job im comfy with is trashed while the others are highly praised. i know a lot of crators that 'tease-trash' pld, or any other job, really. imho those was done tastefully... maybe im just not vibing with his presentation
I've started as a Dragoon in ARR since 2013, but since Dark Knight came out in Heavensward, I've been a tank main. I've played with all the tanks and my personal favorite is Gunbreaker. It just up my alley since Shadowbringers dropped, but Warrior is my second choice when I just want to unga-bunga whatever I am doing in-game.
I started ff online almost 3 weeks ago I’ve been strictly magic .. black mage and a lower level arcanist but now I’m gonna go ahead and level my first tank class… decisions decisions
When I first played FF14 on trial I had ZERO idea about party roles. And I chose Gladiator/Paladin. So when I realized I had to lead folks through dungeons since I'm supposed to be the one taking aggro from the mobs, I'm like: "shit. guess this is my fate now"
Just trying to get back into the game - this is a great video dude. Not so much for information, but for feelings :D If that makes sense... It does to me
This is my first MMO. I thought gladiator was a DPS class but I also thought DPS was basically what a tank did anyway. Then I realized why tanks were in demand. Had no idea what I was in for ^_^;;
I personally started playing FFXIV as a tank main so I might be able to solo content at least that's what I thought from my initial research. I love Paladin and somehow learned to tank the right way naturally with minimal videos watched. When I started playing other jobs, I was really surprised how some people couldn't tank properly, like take aggro and not let the backline get attacked, even worse is when they pull too hard without a thought, which actually gave me healer anxiety when I was trying Scholar.
Watching this make me want more play tank than I already do. (Almost all my max class are tanks, one DPS and one heal) I love PLD and before the announce of gunbreaker I tried to make a glamour one sword skin. I dreamed about a class like gunblader , a tank who can DPS... And when they released he GNB , I thought that will be my new classe. I can't switch to gunbreaker even if he had all I wanted... I love the mitigation and paladin skill much more ... Don't know why, maybe too much used to this class.
Became a dark knight for three reasons 1. I'm a former emo kid. Not one anymore but it shaped my tastes. 2. I wanted one of every class and finally 3. I play JRPGs for their stories, and heard nothing but praise for the dark knight job quests Edit: I don't main any class really. It's a revolving door between dark knight, dragoon, and scholar.
LET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING BROTHER, I MAIN PALADIN DUDE AND I KNOW THE TYPE OF PALADINS YOU TALK ABOUT, THE BAD ONES FROM DF THE ONES WHO THINK THEY ARE THE HOT STUFF BUT IN REALITY THEY ARE THE HOT STINK BROTHER, OVERCONFIDENT AND RUDE TO HEALERS AND DPS, THEY DON'T ACCEPT THEIR OWN FAULTS BROTHER BUT THERE ARE PALADINS BROTHER WHO ARE THE OPPOSITE OF THAT AND LOVE TO HELP PLAYERS DUDE. BUT I DON'T BLAME YOU IF YOU RUN AND SEE THESE EGO-MANIAC PALADINSAND YOU DISLIKE THEM BROTHER
I picked Gladiator as my starting class thinking it was a DPS, I was kinda bummed out at first but I ended up loving the tank life. Insta queues all day everyday.
I always go tank with my first character in any mmo. Well in FF14 I went with miner but after 1.0 you couldn’t play exclusively as disciple of the land so I went with gladiator in RR
Shake it off can definitely be the thing saving everyone in raids. My static in p2s and p4p2 got completely obliterated when i got tired of using it and assumed i could just stop. When i didnt cast it, absolutely everyone but me and my cotank got one shot to the raidwides. It also saved us a lot in p5s and p7s lmao
i love dark knight because the server tick is literally not long enough for me to get a proper opener with how many oGCDs i get to push at lv 90! i love dark knight because every pull has a "will i/won't i" element to it if i dont know what cooldowns my healer has left before they fixed living dead. i love dark knight because i get to leap in with a giant freaking sword because i dont need a shield if i just have more sword! i love dark knight because the edge was there with Fray ever since [A smile better suits a hero] and i needed to hang my white mage cane up somewhere because "now you've gone and done it" tanking in FFXIV is so rewarding when you charge first into an army point your sword at them and say "Everybody look at me! you're all going to die" while your entire party helps. in short "i concur"
I’ve been playing this game since ff11 and only in the last week did I try tanking. And oh my god I love it. I agree with everything you said. I fucking love tanking. So upset I didn’t try it earlier.
I am a Gunbreaker, how dare you compare me to these unga bunga maniacs. Now if you excuse while unleash every god damn cooldown i have in a 20 second window.
I've always played the rogue archetype in RPGs, and still carried that into ff14, although in the form of jump master dragoons. Eventually though I wanted to give tanking a good try and started as paladin, then dark knight for story reasons as soon as I could and I've barely looked back since. Come to think of it, since dragoon is jokingly called the floor tank, maybe a tank was what I was always meant to be in this game
I started playing FFXIV because a friend liked it a lot, and i came into this game fully expecting to be a monk all the way. Hand to hand combat is amazing, and i had a blast with it, it's a very cool class... And up to level 50, that was all there was to me. Played monk exclusively, tried ninja, gave up, left the game. For a damn long while. Cue 3 months later. I decide to come back, and look at the other classes. I was kind of afraid of playing a tank because of responsibilty, but i really like axes... and so, my warrior was born. That's it though, not playing any other classes. Nope, nuh uh. Hunting log. Class quests. Make a shitty glam. Hop into dungeons with my friend. Rinse, repeat. Hey, tanking isn't that hard, it just requires attention... this is fun. Well, i am in ishgard... let me hit up this guy and see how dark knight plays... Yadda yadda, same shit, holy fuck this is cool too... well, i could try gunbreaker too... but I'm definitely not doing paladin! Hit up gunbreaker. It's coolest tank yet. Do paladin as well whatever, i already have 3, might as well have 4. My tank glams suck... i should fix that. Made a cool glam for all 4 tanks and that was the end for me. The glams made me enjoy playing even more, and i haven't touched a DPS again. I've been playing so much tank that I'm going into stormblood with PLD and DRK at level 7, GNB at 67 and WAR at 66. I am a proud member of the brotherhood
Man as a healer Whitemage main... who has played just white mage for 6 years I've experienced many lows and highs of the Job, I always felt hated/looked down upon by my other healers... So recently I started leveling Paladin. I figured. They have a heal... it's a natural progression for me. Only to find out people despise Paladins and that paladins also have experienced the most lows and highs in terms of usefulness. I'm... Really hoping that nobody will be angry at me when I play Summoner as my caster class 😅 💙
Idk, I DID actually come into FFXIV deliberately wanting to be a tank lol My first MMO like many others was WoW, many moons ago, and I didn't know about the "holy trinity" when I started so you can say back then I "didn't think about being a tank," but I still immediately picked up Paladin then swapped to Death Knight as soon as I could, and by the time I was in the endgame I was a tank for life, though I did have half a year of confusion when the Frost tanking spec was swapped with the Blood DPS spec but I still liked Frost but wanted to tank but w/e, ended up still tanking and loving Blood (despite that game stealing your soul and time for very little return ofc). But even before that I did actually play most games as the "beefy choice" for my friends and I always wanted those epic moments of planting a shield in front of a massive attack to save my friends behind me, ya know? Sure, I now main GNB which is more like a DPS in many regards, but I think that just goes to show how my tastes have expanded over the years lol Though I don't agree with your views on some of the tank mains lol It's DRK mains who are usually the sweatiest, imho, since they have to constantly do mental gymnastics for why TBN should still never be changed or even touched up and why a tank with less defensive capabilities then the others is still competing for lowest tank damage with the one using a shield, that or they're the kind of "tank main" that never tanks a first clear cause they're actually not a tank main but just really liked the DRK styoryline lol And most PLD mains I know actually enjoy being offtank as well, cause then they can use a ton of their party utility while I do all the MT stuff like moving the bosses around and using my defensives on myself, but yeah the idea of "being the savior" with all that utility is pretty much always present. You're not really wrong about GNB and WAR mains though, I've been both at different times and yes, being a WAR main means being the reason the group clears cause you're just healing SO FUCKING MUCH, and being a GNB main often feels like a "I'll just do it myself" scenario where you're the one whose DPS will finish the fight lol Also tank privilege in easier content is nothing to scoff at, I don't die in a single AoE I didn't avoid, and the healer can't just ignore me (unless I'm on WAR then I don't even need them in easier content), not too mention protag syndrome in story content, "I'm the bosses main focus cause I'M the main character here! I'm the real WoL!" xD
Always been the knight player. Paladin will always be my fav class in any game just cus I love the concept "The shield is to protect those who cannot protect themselves." I also main tanks and **main tank :^)** cus your experience with paladins is my experience with other tanks. Awful all around. Drk shredded more than cheddar, War doesnt know what self sustain is, Gnb doesnt mow down adds, Pld doing everything wrong, which gets me the most. If the taxi driver doesnt even have a license, I may as well be driving each time, and what else to trust than the shield.
If you guys liked this one, I made a sequel!

I will forever be a passanger of the "started the game wanting to be a DPS but somehow turned into a Tank" train
Was a dragoon for a good chunk, then once I got on warrior, I can’t play anything else 🥲 I love tanking as a WAR
I came to XIV as a PLD stan in pretty much every game from D&D to FFXI and I stand by my sword and board to the bitter end. I admire the DRK and GNB OGCD game and the WAR self healing, but nothing beats the classic knight in shining armor in my book.
👑
love my holy man
W
THIS
It also really fits the story really well as someone who protects those around them.
I will definitely play a PLD when I get around to running NG+
There’s no better feeling then the self-satisfaction knowing that person would’ve assuredly died to the raidwide if not for the mitigation you, the tank, put out.
i dont think thats how tanking works usually its the healer who mits the team for raid wides to be more specific its usually the shield healer

I agree. Also I like to be able to take the biggest hit my enemy can deal, and laugh!
After playing warrior a ton in FF14, I now play tanks in basically every RPG that has them. It’s just really fun for me, the feeling of being completely indestructible, and I don’t mind the trade-off of usually being slower and less damaging.
And the feeling of controlling the fight. If you mess you everyone dies.
...-me a paldain maine- I AM LITERALLY JUST EXISTING! where the fuck all this pali hate gotta come from
Well, he's not wrong about proving something.
Paladin players are so self righteous with their self healing!"
But the same people will treat Warrior like a god saying things like "Warriors are so badass, they can solo the boss, easy! I get disappointed when I have to heal a tank that isn't a Warrior."
First of all, Warrior DPS has often been the lowest.
I dont get it either.
Offensively, still viable (sure could use a buff, or rework, but outside of p8s, i never felt the need to switch to my drk for damage purposes.)
And for party utility?
Take Clemency off your hotbar
@@brandonallen3075 Below 80 PLD has literally zero self-sustain other than Clemency, so no.
Nothing wrong with maining FSH!
Now I am a face rolling keyboard gnb till ff14 ends.
my face when he started talking about paladin :(
lmao xD
you made me hungry and also made me remember that i didnt actually realise i was a "tank" until my first level 50 dungeon when someone said "hey pld, good job tanking!" and i sat back in my chair thinking "oh fuck, im a tank"
i was doing ExDeath normal and all the party died except for the tanks at 10%, me (drk) the and paladin were able to finish it fine, clemency really came in clutch there tho
I main PLD and WHM because im and has always been in love with the support role.
I have yet to even get job stones for the other two but I wonder if they'll be any similar
-also something about gnb aesthetic and animations are oddly attractive in a way I can't explain.
Started the game as a bard main but switched to tank at the beginning of shb. One on the best decisions I've made in game. Tanking is so fun
I played Protection Warrior on WoW for years and so it was only natural to choose Gladiator/Paladin because Sword&Board. :P
I've met two types of PLDs.
Really well edited and put together, this was fun to watch! 🥳
Good video and I was really surprised to see you only have 400 subs. Keep it going man, you’ve gained a sub 😊
Man out here telling me I can't make my bondage jokes
I SHALL CONTINUE TO SPAM HOLMGANG
I do kinda wish there was a "Dps warrior or Dark knight version for the big weapon fun stuff" but i realize how tricky that would be.
Started as a Gladiator back all that time ago, and have stuck with it to this day. Sword and board for life.
YOUR WARRIOR EXPERIENCE WAS MY WARRIOR EXPERIENCE AND I JUST LOVED IT ALL THE WAY!
The rush of a big pull makes my brain light fire.
Tanking good
*thunderous applause*
Originally fully intended to start as WAR, but was dead set on starting in Gridania... So I ended up starting as DRG instead, with the intention of switching over to WAR and later DRK asap. (I've pretty much been a tank main in every MMO I've played since WoW and FFXI)
I enjoyed this video and I enjoy how human you are. You're seem genuine. I like that a lot.
Good content man, keep it up. I was a warrior main but changed to monk because of pressure and still learning the dungeons :O i should get back into tanking!!!
I’ve always played tank since I started playing MMOs in the 2000s it’s amazing. It’s really fun.
Samurai Game!
Just started leveling Dark Knight. Tanking is not easy, but the challenge is what makes it fun, and actually knowing the fights AND being able to actually make a real difference through placement and whatnot does make it very fulfilling
My first character in ffxiv was a viera paladin and I absolutely love it it’s such a blast lol
(We dont talk about GW2 tanking here... thats just .... well another lvl of yaaaaaaaawn)
For those people that wanna call out something now like "mimimi than you didnt do any endgame content" ofc i did. I did mythic content in WoW and the extreme Content in FF. The overall Mechanics are nice in both! I like playing both of the games. Just the tanking in special is in FF realy realy realy realy simple and broke down to small parts of real "tanking".
(and throwing out a 10% hp shield, or 10% magic dmg reduction doesnt feel as good as saving a special person with a paladin blessing in WoW or mitigate a dead healer as paly tank, or be the person that actually deals a 1v1 situation with a boss and perfectly time every gc'd as blood dk to get the last 3% of a boss down... just one slip and it would be ruined...)
Tanking in WoW just feels like beeing a indestructable beeing. Tanking in FF is more in the oldschool fashion (that is still okay! just not realy special)
All I have heard so far is Tanking is the best job in ff14 and I've already liked and subbed.
The one small thing I should clarify:
I don't hate Paladin (The Job) I mostly dislike Paladin players I find in Duty Finder.
Since every experience is different for other people, the generalitation is a bit much, since other people might experience the opposite
this is about the whole paladin, dark knight topic you picked up on sonata
Imma PLD main here. Kinda saddened to hear you’ve had bad experiences with PLDs. I hope those don’t lessen any fun you have with the game.
First video I've watched and I assumed you had some thousand subs lol
Good video!
Funnily enough I start every mmo or RPG I play and gravitate towards tank playstyle. Its actually what I want to play as.
Now I love every Tank job, and my though about them are:
DRK : My favorite.
Your healer is your best friend, so don't hesitate in warning them if you need advice or a more focused healing on you.
i started out and main pld and i like how i have a skillset that lets me protect and heal my friends :3
Hey now, I don't stare at my cartridges. I put them in the middle of my screen because it uh, is the least distracting place!
I also used clemency and cover on my healers (woah crazy I know)
I definitely went in choosing a tank job as my first job on purpose
I started FFXIV with the Arcanist and when I discovered the Scholar, I thought I was made to be a healer main
But i swear, the moment I started to play DRK something in me was awoken and I could never go back. I was still a bit too insecure about my tanking skills to do djs, but I started to play more and more with the job (and sometimes switch to Gunbreaker) to the point where it was by far my most played class in ShB. Now, I think my favorite role to take is still tank, I do most trials and raids with my DRK.
At first i started as a dragoon
then quit the game for quite a while after that i made a new character in a new server a gladiator
I was scared as fuck to play as a tank to fuck it up in duty finder
But comunity here was so god damn friendly i managed to learn how to tank in the best way possible
As a pld main my job is to keep people alive
I feel that bro, I came for Dragoon after the Heavensward cinematic trailer--I stayed for Dark Knight
Each tank gets 2, with WHM getting 1 (and BLU, but you can play BLU as tank #5 as well)
The humor in this video is fantastic.
I swear I was in dun scaith yesterday with that tank at the beginning of the video.
First of our vids I have watched, I main WHM..... I laughed so hard.
SUBBED!
Man
That feeling when I perfectly time and save someone with TBN is absolutely delicious
As somone who started as Gladiator, cuz, sward
And brand new to mmos, not knowing what to expect... yea i stumbled into the Tank role .--.;
Wasn't until Odin taught me the hard way, that there was much more to tanking
Fun full story, Odin was the first boss/dungeon/trial to make me learn and manage cooldowns, the rest of ARR was just so barebones.
Once i got the refresher, and some nasty looks from my party, i took a break from the game, came back leveled up Ninja, then later went back to Tanking with Gunbreaker, now with better understanding, really enjoying being the punching bag for my team.
look man, im just trying to benedict my healer and cover that dps who failed the mech
im literary just trying my best here
edit: *intervention, why do i keep remember it as benediction
Let his negativity wash off your back. While i question the pld negativity, i dont let it stop me from being the party's shield!
@@never5930 yeah, i wouldnt sweat it haha
i know he just joking, a bit awkward checking a video from creators i never knew before, only to be told the one job im comfy with is trashed while the others are highly praised.
i know a lot of crators that 'tease-trash' pld, or any other job, really. imho those was done tastefully...
maybe im just not vibing with his presentation
@@sur7969 yea, he kinda just straight up dissed PLD mains 🤷♂️
UA-cam randomly gave me a push notification with this video, and I love it. My FC co-leader might have words for WAR and GNB being the same people. XD
It does to me
This is my first MMO. I thought gladiator was a DPS class but I also thought DPS was basically what a tank did anyway. Then I realized why tanks were in demand. Had no idea what I was in for ^_^;;
I died at “boom” cheese
I personally started playing FFXIV as a tank main so I might be able to solo content at least that's what I thought from my initial research. I love Paladin and somehow learned to tank the right way naturally with minimal videos watched. When I started playing other jobs, I was really surprised how some people couldn't tank properly, like take aggro and not let the backline get attacked, even worse is when they pull too hard without a thought, which actually gave me healer anxiety when I was trying Scholar.
Watching this make me want more play tank than I already do. (Almost all my max class are tanks, one DPS and one heal)
I love PLD and before the announce of gunbreaker I tried to make a glamour one sword skin.
I dreamed about a class like gunblader , a tank who can DPS... And when they released he GNB , I thought that will be my new classe.
I can't switch to gunbreaker even if he had all I wanted... I love the mitigation and paladin skill much more ... Don't know why, maybe too much used to this class.
Became a dark knight for three reasons
1. I'm a former emo kid. Not one anymore but it shaped my tastes.
2. I wanted one of every class and finally
3. I play JRPGs for their stories, and heard nothing but praise for the dark knight job quests
Edit: I don't main any class really. It's a revolving door between dark knight, dragoon, and scholar.
In my opinion, it's good to main 1 class per role. Good to have options, yeah?
I liked this video I am now motivated to level up my dark knight
I want to change classes but I don't want to go through the process of leveling all over again lmao
As a warrior I can confirm that my shake IS the only thing keeping the raid from dying
I LOVE Tanks. Im a Main Healer but also love Tanking.
Especially when i heal Tanks and they get the W2W ChooChoo-Train Mode.
Imagine not mentioning best tank, the floor tank.
Don't think of yourself too highly
PLD: I’m the main character
WAR: 😡
DRK: By the power of darkness bestowed upon me, I summon thee my Esteem Shadow!
GNB: 💥 (🗡 💥 (🗡 💥 (🗡
Sure, I now main GNB which is more like a DPS in many regards, but I think that just goes to show how my tastes have expanded over the years lol
Though I don't agree with your views on some of the tank mains lol
It's DRK mains who are usually the sweatiest, imho, since they have to constantly do mental gymnastics for why TBN should still never be changed or even touched up and why a tank with less defensive capabilities then the others is still competing for lowest tank damage with the one using a shield, that or they're the kind of "tank main" that never tanks a first clear cause they're actually not a tank main but just really liked the DRK styoryline lol And most PLD mains I know actually enjoy being offtank as well, cause then they can use a ton of their party utility while I do all the MT stuff like moving the bosses around and using my defensives on myself, but yeah the idea of "being the savior" with all that utility is pretty much always present.
You're not really wrong about GNB and WAR mains though, I've been both at different times and yes, being a WAR main means being the reason the group clears cause you're just healing SO FUCKING MUCH, and being a GNB main often feels like a "I'll just do it myself" scenario where you're the one whose DPS will finish the fight lol
Also tank privilege in easier content is nothing to scoff at, I don't die in a single AoE I didn't avoid, and the healer can't just ignore me (unless I'm on WAR then I don't even need them in easier content), not too mention protag syndrome in story content, "I'm the bosses main focus cause I'M the main character here!
