This is a clinic on how to accompany someone. John Mayer plays with so much respect for the song and for Leon himself, it’s tear inducing. RIP, Leon - Rock and Roll royalty.
It’s one of the best solos I’ve ever heard. Proof that’s it’s not how many notes you play or how many tricks you do but if you can make the guitar truly talk you will captivate people like JM does here.
Of course, John Mayer's solo is beautiful. What's really beautiful to me is his humility in the accompaniment. I remember hearing him say something about how extraordinarily special the experience of inviting someone into your song is. Surely true for Leon Russell in his emotion after the solo guitar. But the inverse must surely be the extraordinary experience of being invited into someone's song.
I've watched this several times. Always been a Leon Russell fan, and amazed that he performed so seldom publicly over the years because of stage fright. It did seem, as many people mentioned, that he teared up a bit just after the guitar solo. Absolutely, he loved the guitar work, which was perfect for the occasion. He also may have known that this might have been one of his final public performances.
This is underrated overall. The fact that JM got one of the best guitar solos going or the fact the the Legend got all teared up while listening to it does not impress a lot of pple makes me happy.Or it makes me feel special :D
Once in a lifetime something special comes where everything around you stops or just doesn’t matter. That’s what just happened to me the last 3:34 minutes. Thank you Mr Russell and Mayer.
The new Russell bio is incredible. 600 pages. 24 hours in audio. LEO. RUSSELL: The Master of Space and Time’s Journey Through Rock ‘N Roll History. 👏👏👏👏
Leon is largely underappreciated. He was there in the very begining of rock & roll as a session guy, slid perfectly into the 60s & 70s one of the very top songwriter/band leader/session men in the entire form. Thanks for sharing a gem from this true genius.
Leon's emotional vulnerability in this song, both as it's meant to be and due to the circumstance of playing it live at his R&R HOF induction, gets me every time... particularly after the solo/applause when he gets choked up. What a musician. What a songwriter. Legend.
Just absolutely beautiful !! Leon getting choked up there shows how powerful music can be. It's just a shame it took so long for him to be inducted. Not only is he an incredibly gifted songwriter but for my money one of the best piano players in rock& roll history.
A lot of top artists have performed this GREAT song & many brilliantly. But I have not see anyone CHERISH it more than john just did... What makes it so exqusite is how well john SERVES the song with so few and such perfectly placed ardent notes...
I hope this video serves as a springboard for those who are new to Leon Russell and his music. If you've ever wondered what constitutes a national treasure--Leon's work spanning 60 years is a national treasure. Godspeed Leon Russell.
Seen Leon on the Detroit River front for free before he died. He wore white top hat and tails. He played a white baby grand piano ! Magnificent memory ♡
This is the part of life I hate. Listening to music was a big part of my life and Leon Russell's recordings shared many hours with me listening to his songs. This one was his best as it was one that really affected how my mind and heart felt about being in love and what love can feel like. Now I feel sad for his passing. Will miss him dearly.
2:27-2:29...Bless his heart. Thankful he overcame his battles in those last years and is resting easy.....such a treasure. Thank you for the upload Tony.
2:28 you can see how John's sublime solo got to him, and he kinda choked up. THAT is the power of music, my friends. Good music, of course, not the manufactured poo poo that dominates the airwaves today.
This has to go down as one of John Mayer's most beautiful accompaniments. Absolutely gorgeous and totally lovely
This is the greatest thing I’ve ever heard Mayer play
That's saying a lot. I agree.
100% agree. You have to know if you can bring Leon Russell to tears it must be great.
And HOW
It happens to be :)

One day I'll be able to watch this and not tear up. That day is not today.
Never. RIP Master of Space and Time. Gone 4 years today
I feel that as well
i think Leon almost cried after that magnificent solo! R.I.P. Mr Russell and thank you.
Always thought he choked up there. Lovely.
Ricky ♫ Guitarman ♪ you can hear it in his voice... and this song always does me

Mayer has the ability not only to feel the song but to feel the moment the song is played in.

Leon toured constantly for decades, right up until the end. He performed in public almost every day.
Standing ovation to you Leon. Thanks for singing this song,,,,,, singing this song,,,,,, for us.
Leon is simply great, and my admiration for John Mayer continues to grow. This performance kicked my ass.
When he choked up that was so precious

With the meaning of the song... how could you not feel something :D
Loved hearing Leon say "yeah" and "right" as Mayer played...
I swear it's very rare for me but when I hear this preformance tears run down my eyes..

What happens to Leon when john starts playing is what happens to all those of us that really feel the spirit in music and are moved by it
Leon leaves you with a feeling of fulfillment that's for sure

Goodbye old friend. Music will not be the same.
Not passing the torch but sharing the mutual glow. I keep coming back to this tune.

Joe Cocker, Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, John Mayer, all sounded a bit better with Leon in the room.
