Armadillo World Hdqr, Austin Texas. The 70's. Leon brought his Grand Piano, we couldn't lift it up on stage. We left it in center of room with tables surrounding him. An intimate weekday show. 200 people at most. Was honored to have been a small part of the show. I was his beer getter and cig lighter. True talent, King Leon captivated the audience. What a presence. He looked just like this video, wore this same shirt and mirror sunglasses.
I use to listen to song during my divorce, I loved him so much I hated him. Nothing ever makes sense of a mess, but this song will always remind me of the better days.

His resting place is here in his home town of Tulsa. There is a beautiful monument/tombstone that Elton John and other contributed to of a piano with keys. I think there is a video here on UA-cam of the monument, it's really pretty.
I am a trained Classical pianist. But I dreamt of taking lessons from Leon. He is a master. And a voice that rings true. I sing this to my husband, when we are alone.
I went to the Hollywood premiere of Mad Dogs & Englishmen in 71 with about 10 of my friends. It was a life changing event for me. I am now 70 years old and still listening to my old friends, Joe and Leon.

I met Leon years ago as he did a Show at the Bull Shoals theater of the arts. He was a really nice guy..... I helped volunteer that night, when he showed up with his band I helped load their equipment on the stage and when the show started and in between sets I had to run down from the belcony out the front door of the theater to a side door by the stage and open and close the curtains then run back around to the front door back up to the belcony and run the stage lights for the show. I'd do it all again if I had the chance..... 😀
Such an amazing artist, muscian, singer, song writer...such talent...I got to meet his daughter and son who opened for him in Portland at Roseland. Best, best, best....love you, Leon!
All my life I loved you and your music. "I love you in a place where there's no space and time, I love you for my life, you are a friend of mine". Go with God Leon. I remember.
best thing I EVER did was walk up to his motor home and hsve him autograph his picture of him in 1996. I was the only one knocking on the door when he opened it and Said sure I will be glad too. yep it's framed and on my bedroom dresser

I'm going to his 80th birthday celebration at his former high School in Tulsa Oklahoma tomorrow. His Church Studio in Tulsa has been completely restored, and is reopening, also. Musicians he's worked with give him full credit. Total admiration for the Master of Space & Time!
It’s such a very poignant song, especially for folks that loved one another. The lyrics and the melody is simply riveting. Most folks are reduced to tears when the first chord strikes!
I have listened to this song all throughout my 36 years. My Dad loved Leon…. My Mom too. She died in 2004. I always associated this song with her… and do shed a tear or more every single time I hear this. The meaning has changed through the years… Recently, when with my elderly father, he mentioned this song always reminded him of my Mom, but now it’s for me when he hears it. Life is quite the ride…. Enjoy it while you can
I’m gonna play this over and over until I can listen without crying. And I rarely cry, but the first two times got me. My man was the finest person I’ll ever meet
The recent turn of events are SO distressing to my heart and my love of mankind - surely there is enough love on our planet to OVERCOME! I hope my brothers and sisters have enough love in their hearts to rise above the doom that seems so eminent at this moment. Of course, I felt the same way in the 60's - I will never relent in my hope as long as I am still here .....
Leon-A National Treasure. -So much Soul emanating from this Man. Leon probably played on more records in his long career that just about any one else. RIP Brother 🇺🇸
How thrilling to see another person refer to “the master of space and time” Leon Russell as as “National Treasure.” I have felt this way as long as I’ve known of him. True! He’s undoubtedly the Mozart of our time!
A whole lot of other talented folks have recorded this song. But it's Leon's song. Always has been, always will be. Nobody could ever hope to match the beauty and passion of Leon this time around.
I've been so many places in my life and time I've sung a lot of songs I've made some bad rhymes I've acted out my life in stages With ten thousand people watching But we're alone now And I'm singing this song to you I know your image of me is what I hoped to be I treated you unkindly But darling can't you see There's no one more important to me Baby can't you see through me? 'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you You taught me precious secrets Of a true love You wanted nothing You came out in front When I was hiding But now I'm so much better And if my words don't come together Listen to the melody 'Cause my love is in there hiding I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone And I was singing this song to you I love you in a place Where there's no space or time I love you for my life You're a friend of mine And when my life is over Remember when we were together We were alone and I was singing this song to you We were alone And I was singing this song to you We were alone and I was singing this song Singing this song to you
I read and sang this whole entire song with you. This song just does something to you....for real....❤️ I couldn’t help it. It’s just that way but this is one of the greatest tunes EVER!!!!! I wish you were still around, I miss you and your wonderful music!!!!!
Happy Birthday to a man who said he was languishing in "a ditch by the side of the highway of life" until Elton John came along a few years ago and made an album with him. This should never have happened to one of the best musicians/songwriters/producers out there.
He was never in a ditch though, many, many, people never quit loving Leon. I'd say Leon brought more attention to Elton instead of the other way around.
He was in a bad place and Elton John was determined that he should be back making music and performing. Leon Russell was a gift I discovered back in the 70’s. Truly one of a kind. He will be missed but we can help his music stay alive.
I absolutely love this song ! I think of my wife whenever I listen it, because I know that I’m not an easy person to love even though we’ve been married for 23 years, this is my song for her.
That's such a wonderfully honest emotion you have shared. Much respect to you sir. I hope you share that with her as well, I'm sure it will mean the world to her.
So sad. I had a black light poster of Leon (playin bass, Concert for Bangladesh) in my room when I was a teenager- circa 1974...life is short. My parents are gone, my brother has passed and all my heroes are dying. However, his music lives on & on. Leon was a musical force on every front in the music industry.
I surely can relate to what you said tmacart - life is short, the losses are often time too much to bear, but the hope is knowing one day we'll reunite again - 'over there ▬ on the other side.' ~ RIP, Leon ~
1971...when we were still Free before the SHTF. I am so sorry for our kids that have to live in the now. Lord, please hear our prayers. We want our babies to have what we have, even if they don't know what real Freedom is. In Jesus Name, Amen. Please know that some of us are awake, know what is happening, and are working on your future...we are trying hard to give you Freedom. It's not easy, but WE are determined. With God's help, it will happen. I believe this with all my heart.

That's a great story. Yes, indeed he became famous and I saw him several times in Houston during the 70'sand 80's. This by far was my favorite song and I'm so glad Elton John got him into the Rocking Roll Hall of Fame. I watch that video over and over on youtube because most people have no idea of the magnitude of his talent and the music legacy he has left behind. Fell in love with this song when I was only 22 years old, at 69 still have to listen to it. I was lucky enough to see him in concert, could not get enough of his music. His piano playing stirs my soul. RIP
Me too; I'm 72 now, it still shakes me.
You should also listen to Donny Hathaway's version. It's lovely. And I was about 13 when this came out.
It reminds me of the joys I've experienced. That's a good thing in this day and age.
A song for you......just takes me away... I loved everything he ever played and sang. Just himself. RIP Leon... I miss you!!!!!
me too! I'm 69 too. & it's still a favorite.
Lucky man, you are.
I use to listen to song during my divorce, I loved him so much I hated him. Nothing ever makes sense of a mess, but this song will always remind me of the better days.
RIP Leon Russell, You will be missed. One of my first concerts ..1972 ..This song means a lot to me. Feeling sad.
It's a damn shame.
2016 is the worst year ever.
sadly it will only get worse as great musicians reach their 70s & 80s..
the worst.!
Some tough hits on our souls. Hang in there.
RIP Leon, you touched more souls than you can ever imagine. :(

My fiance used to sing this song to me at least once a week. He passed away years ago, and I still listen to it often with a smile and a tear.
My best Friend Artie passed today. He turned me on to Leon and we were at Long Beach Arena the night of Leon Live. I put this song on tonight w the Sennheiser yellow headphones and lost it in tears
We drifted apart but saw each occasionally I thank him for his friendship
RIP ❤ Artie "AC"
Treasure the memories. So sorry for your loss no matter that time had you drifted apart. The friendship and memories remain.
Artie RIP ❤️
Leon should have been a headliner anywhere he went; but I think he like it the way he like it . Up on the high wire doing his thing
Oh my gosh!!! How did I not know Leon Russell wrote this tear jerker?? I always listen to Donny Hathaway. Mr. Leon, you created a MASTERPIECE. Thank you Sir, and may you RIP.
He was an incredible artist. I miss him so much. Celebrating his memory and his music today, especially, on his birthday. 4-2-42
His resting place is here in his home town of Tulsa. There is a beautiful monument/tombstone that Elton John and other contributed to of a piano with keys. I think there is a video here on UA-cam of the monument, it's really pretty.
Yeah, Donny’s was good, but I have to give the nod to Leon’s version
@@musigny59 When you wrote it, and it's from your heart/soul... no cover of your song will ever equal the original... IMO.
@@elliotjaybaron726 Well I didn’t write it, I’m not that talented.
I am a trained Classical pianist. But I dreamt of taking lessons from Leon. He is a master. And a voice that rings true. I sing this to my husband, when we are alone.
Wouldn't that have been Kool
I got to set on his piano
I think I was 12
Love your comment
I went to the Hollywood premiere of Mad Dogs & Englishmen in 71 with about 10 of my friends. It was a life changing event for me. I am now 70 years old and still listening to my old friends, Joe and Leon.
I just love him I'm 71,I have all his albums🎉😂❤
I truly believe that this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. Leon and his piano. What else is there to say.
I think he wrote this song for his wife Janet Constantine who was a classmate from Hugo, Oklahoma
Seriously? I'm in my 70's and I had never heard this song before. I wasn't missing anything. Nothing special about this song at all.
@@leerunning4666 the only thing that more sad than your comment is you obvious lack of taste.

@@leerunning4666You should listen this song sung by the Carpenters.
A hard-working genius. Those harmonies are magic.
He was the genuine article. There wasn't one bit of flash or bling or "celebrity", he ws simply the greatest. I'm lucky enough to have heard him all of my 62 yrs and he is sorely missed, not only by ME but by anyone who had a soul and a need for real true authentic music, God Bless, Leon.
thewhuthut I was so impressed in 1970 when I saw him and his piano mesmerize the crowd.no flashing lights just talent.not one person disrespected his performance seemed we all loved it

Hi beautiful 👋
Great description! I could just see it happening. How cool for you to have that experience! How times have changed!
No one milked the pain out of hearts like you did with this song. Thanks for the blues. RIP.
Lynn Lass I like your post. Nice to know that Leon wasn't one of those celebs who could be an asshole to fans.
Mark Bellamy it was perfect. so kind. signed all the things i wanted him to . handed them to me i said thank you very much. he said no thank you for coming. his picture sits out in my room signed and all.
Too beautiful for words. He nailed it from start to finish. Love you Leon. ❤ rip

Listen to Leons " Lady Blue " . It's awesome too !
Katie Bee Indeed!!! You're Right......
Leon was a genius people sometimes forget he was a member of the wrecking crew that played on countless hits in the 60's.
I remember
@ Bullshit dummy Mccartney would have played the drums like he did on Back in the USSR and Dear Prudence and others
@ Idiot, we all know you can see who played what and where. Mccartney did a lovely job on the ballad of John and Yoko
Leon also served numerous other artists as producer. He did behind the scenes writing, arranging, playing and producing for many years.
@@33dentin McCartneys drumming was not great.
This song played in my mind. It was better times. Life is never perfect but having great music to listen to helps immensely.
I'm here because he's Leon Russell & I've been coming here, every now and then for 10 years
Come back
My Daddy would make me listen to this song over and over. I hated it. He passed and now I know why he wanted me to listen to it. Such a beautiful reminder, blessing, and memory.
I heard him in St Paul MN at a Santana concert. Didn’t know who he was but he blew me away. He was no ‘backup band’. He was the real thing!
What happened to music? We were the fortunate and blessed generation.
Consider yourself incredibly fortunate to have lived in the same time as Leon and all of the musical giants of our generation.
I miss Leon, and love him for sharing his spirit with us.

I do consider myself lucky to have been born in the time of Leon, and many others in the infamous "Wrecking Crew" as well as people like The Allman Brothers, Townes Van Zandt, Marvin Gaye and the whole Motown sound, Thin Lizzy, etc, etc.
I remember Leon Russell I was just a little girl he was wonderful
And I married a man tall with long dark hair he was a possible quality Native American male and he was twenty-eight and I was Thirty and we were together almost thirty years till he died we had children together
And he died two years ago December and I'm lost without him an alone and my dog just died so I'm completely alone

"Cause my love is in there, hiding." One of the best lines EVER!!!!

so glad that I got to see Leon (twice). Once with the Shelter People, which is a great album. and then @ a smaller venue in Morristown NJ.
You got that right. Those words are so prefect and so meaningful
The meaning has changed through the years…
Recently, when with my elderly father, he mentioned this song always reminded him of my Mom, but now it’s for me when he hears it.
Life is quite the ride…. Enjoy it while you can
I used to sing this to my baby in 1971,while rocking her to sleep... It's 2021.;it's still my favorite.
I’m gonna play this over and over until I can listen without crying. And I rarely cry, but the first two times got me.

What an amazing talent. This song has brought me to tears for 45 years each time I hear it. One of my favorites. He will truly be missed

You herd Donny Hathaway sing this before.
A whole lot of other talented folks have recorded this song.
But it's Leon's song.
Always has been, always will be.
Nobody could ever hope to match the beauty and passion of Leon this time around.
I really can’t get enough of this song. Leon just performs one of his best. So moving.
I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs
I've made some bad rhymes
I've acted out my life in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now
And I'm singing this song to you
I know your image of me is what I hoped to be
I treated you unkindly
But darling can't you see
There's no one more important to me
Baby can't you see through me?
'Cause we're alone now and I'm singing this song to you
You taught me precious secrets
Of a true love
You wanted nothing
You came out in front
When I was hiding
But now I'm so much better
And if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody
'Cause my love is in there hiding
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
I love you in a place
Where there's no space or time
I love you for my life
You're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song to you
We were alone
And I was singing this song to you
We were alone and I was singing this song
Singing this song to you

Happy Birthday to a man who said he was languishing in "a ditch by the side of the highway of life" until Elton John came along a few years ago and made an album with him. This should never have happened to one of the best musicians/songwriters/producers out there.
He was never in a ditch though, many, many, people never quit loving Leon. I'd say Leon brought more attention to Elton instead of the other way around.
It was a figurative ditch!
obviously
He was in a bad place and Elton John was determined that he should be back making music and performing. Leon Russell was a gift I discovered back in the 70’s. Truly one of a kind. He will be missed but we can help his music stay alive.
Those were the days! Leon always #1 to me. Hummingbird don't fly away!
When I was a teen in the 70s, I was in love with Leon Russell, I still love him. ❤️
You can be an easier person to love. Do it for you both,
