Infinite fretboard possibilities via a the medium and approach of the Grateful Dead and Garcia !! Awesome share, John !! Great insights. So ... no matter where you are on the frettboard, you're only even a whole step or a half step from being " in key" ... thus a simple bend or slide up/ down can turn a " mistake " into a cool musical statement.

I feel like John Mayer was born with the guitar embedded in his soul. He can play anything and you can totally tell that he feels every note, it's really incredible to watch him! I've seen almost 150 dead shows and with his musical talent, there's not another human alive that could have filled that role better than he did! Thank you very much John Mayer ❤️☮️☮️
A jazz player named Ben Monder has a foundation of learning the arpeggios for chords all over the neck. I learned to shape solos around chord tones by first using these arpeggios, and I hear a lot of that in John's playing. When I started thinking more in terms of "can I hear the chord changes in my solo" vs. thinking in terms of scales, I quickly progressed. Now I can add color using scales, yet it's all centered around the chords. Still learning, still practicing, and trying to learn from cool cats like John :)
Pretty basic foundation for jazz, to know all the arpeggios in all locations on the neck (and so be able to play anything, no matter where you are on the neck, within a 5 fret span)
Absolutely beautiful John. Thank you for all the heart you've put into this all these years. It has been such a welcomed pleasure & inspiration. For me, you have absolutely channeled that same energy Garcia put into his music. It's the first I've felt it since he passed. (ps. you made Parish smile also, that says a lot right there.)
When I first fell in love with the guitar back in the 70s I wanted to sound cool without the hard work of actually understanding what I was doing. Basically running before I could walk. This held me back throughout my entire life. Practice was just playing the same things without progressing. How I wish I learnt more theory and mastered the neck.
Thanks John. I was fortunate to be at the Eugene Autzen Stadium show in Oregon summer 2018. You killed it bro. Love your playing. I'm always working on my Jerry style riffing so I really appreciate this vid. Cheers!
I’ve actually been all deep in improvising for the last year or so- and all roads with improv eventually lead to Jerry. The bit you said about one string really struck a chord with me no put intended. Sugaree is a good example of this. Learning to play the sugaree vocal melody on guitar basically changed everything for me. i started to see all the places that the triads come in and their barre chords. It helped me unlock the fretboard past just major vs minor. Thanks JM. JG became my biggest guitar hero once I started improvising, and I gotta say- he would look down on you and smile. He would be touched that you threw in some chromatics as a shout out to him, I think he’d be touched to hear your more blues based kind of takes on his melodies. He was first and foremost a musician- and anybody who understands music would have to smile at your take on the dead library. Not only that but to see how you’ve grown as a player over the time on the road with them. You’ll never read this but as a Jerry fan I just wanted to say thanks bro for the tips and I’m gonna learn a lot more from analyzing your take on jerry. When you talk about how you hear music on your head it makes me feel sane. Same goes for the “holding a guitar making you feel better cuz you could play it at any time” type thing. I think great players and people who have that potential to be a great player and have their own voice on guitar tend to be pretty crazy adhd or whatever the way we hear and obsess over music. When you talk about all those years of playing guitar in your bedroom just working on your chops for when you get to play music with somebody else- that is so me rn. Except I did my dead improv phase before even playing with anyone. But dude- whenever somebody says something bad about you- remember the dead and co stuff. Once you’ve played this music you’ve eternally improved peoples lives. This music for whatever reason changes peoples lives. For me that first song was Althea.
John Thank you so much gor your humility and willingness to share your vast knowledge of guitar playing and simplifying complex ways of getting around the fret board You exemplify why Eric Clapton calls you a Master Guitarist in every way !! Thank you for making this video, John. This lesson not only reveals how Jerry navigated around the neck, but it clarifies and explains for me a broader sense of musicality that, for the first time, I finally understand! Can’t wait to practice tonight🤓
I totally get it John. You are a master genius, the way you fly over the chords without landing until you really want to. Thank you for your love and for this out-of-this-universe masterclass.
That explanation was the most informative guitar video I may have ever watched. The non chordal segment of sugaree was amazing. And the keeping of the b to e chord changes in your head helps a lot

Great video. I’m a 70 yr old guy still playing. When I was 17 I went to a gig on 101 in Marin county advertised as Dead Jam. Brought my guitar and went backstage, (I had an sg and Mr Garcia had one too. We said hello and he went on to play w/ Crosby Marmaduke and other folks from the days of old and in the way. I didn’t get to jam but I always wanted to. There’s more but , nice stuff man.
Thanks so much. Totally different way to look at guitar. I learned more in 10 minutes from your demo than in 10 yeats. Hope your tour was a blast. Stuff like this keeps guitar playing fresh and new.
There is something alluring to the ear with those large interval jumps… years ago someone pointed out that melodic leaps are characteristic of McCartney’s vocal lines. Singing your lines is so organic. Natural musician, you!

I've been playing instruments by ear since I was a kid. I generally like trying to figure out my own way to play the stuff that I hear. So I love utilizing all of the neck to play chords, phrases, bits, and pieces.
As someone just getting started learning guitar this is literally magic! He makes it look so effortless while I’m in pain trying to form a barre chord or a normal chord for that matter!😂❤
Hey John, thanks for letting us into your head. This is the most valuable kind of information. I’ve been learning a lot of your solos (Dead and Solo) note for note and analyzing them. Whenever I do this I always wonder what the player is thinking. Thank you again!! Paul

Evening, I've never played a guitar in my life but since my teens have loved the sound it can deliver. I've just watched this video and found it really interesting and informative from a man who can play to a high skill level but isn't afraid of breaking it down and analysing what it is he's actually doing and why. I've been a professional dry stone waller for 40 years, and I definitely see parallels with what I've just watched. The danger of learning and perfecting a skill is not reflecting and passing what you have learnt on to others. Through out your short time on this planet if you have a skill, pass it on , you're only the best till somebody new comes along.
Thanks, John! In this practice session you have really hit on what I love about the Dead's music. Saw the show in Dallas last week and y'all were ON FIRE (it was also hot as hell)!! Can't wait 'til the next tour!!

Ben monder is a genius…. My friend Ted played drums in his group and is a fantastic genius too 👍🏽👍🏽
Pretty basic foundation for jazz, to know all the arpeggios in all locations on the neck (and so be able to play anything, no matter where you are on the neck, within a 5 fret span)
Enjoyed ourselves thoroughly at the sphere. Jerry smiles down on you. You inspire us and we love you.
Cheers!
Strong melodic lines come out. Thanks this makes total sense. Great instruction. Great player.
The multi position chord playing was the highlight here …. John stitches everything together seamlessly. 👍😎🇳🇿🎸
More in those 2 chords than in my lifetime! Simply amazing what skilled hands can do for the soul. That was good John boy!
This video just reminds me of how much a genius Jerry Garcia was. John is doing a fine job of learning his chops though.
This is really surreal that we have this video. Imagine anybody like Jimi, Angus, SRV, Jerry, doing this. Just showing us their mind. Sooooo amazing.
Angus was a pretty cookie cutter guitar player.
Loved the vibe @philly 6-15-23! you're always a great Energy Force!!Big LOVE FOR DEAD CO.
John
Thank you so much gor your humility and willingness to share your vast knowledge of guitar playing and simplifying complex ways of getting around the fret board
You exemplify why Eric Clapton calls you a Master Guitarist in every way !!
I enjoyed your playing in Charlotte with Dead and Company !! Thank You and May God's Light forever shine upon you
John! Thanks for sharing and keeping it real!
Pretty generous for a guy like him to just give us all a lesson for free.
I really hope that you are a part of the Dead & Co. reboot after this “final” tour. We need a lot more of this.
So great to see John back.. making it all look and sound so magical.
Lucy J He is just an astonishing talent and so generous to post the lessons... This Dead and Company tour has been his been yet, just jaw dropping solos and so in the Zone !
So awesome and generous.
You’re a good teacher John . I taught full time philly and San Fran for 25 years, gigs at night. Keep postin these .
He is a musical fucking genius.
So glad to hear the life he adds to the Dead.
Thank you.
That explanation was the most informative guitar video I may have ever watched.
The non chordal segment of sugaree was amazing.
And the keeping of the b to e chord changes in your head helps a lot
Bow Down. What a treat to here these timeless tunes with John's interpretation and riffs.
That was awesome! Thank you John Mayer for letting us in!
He really is the best, and after all the greats to have, John's arrival makes music fabulous, a genius, and yeah, EC doesn't mind god bless you John Mayer
Thanks for loving and playing Grateful Dead music. These last 8 years have been an unexpected and wonderful ride.
Really! THÉ man..... this is one the most inspiring guitar videos I've seen so far. THANK YOU John Mayer...can't get enough of this. Please continue.
well done John...thank you for taking what we have loved for so long so seriously.
Thank you JM for helping to keep the Dead alive.❤
I love watching you practice The Dead. You look so happy man.
Thanks so much for taking the time to provide a hugely valuable lesson!
The smile at 3:51 when he makes that beautiful melodic transition back to chords cracks me up.
Thanks John for the awesome lesson, I loved noodling around with you! I wanna actually jam with you man!
I would like to add john that seeing my first show in 1985 and many many shows there after and seeing jerry play as if it was a walk in the park for him and you my freind after seeing you play with dead and company 2 dozen or more times just leave me in awwwh how so so talented you are my freind always puts a smile on my face to see and hear the music i so much love for so many years i just want to say thank you and i never feel disapointed after a show keep it up john you truly are a masterpiece!
Thank you John, we are very grateful for you❤️
This is great! Thanks! Dead and Co are really blasting off this summer. Love it. You clearly recognize that Jerry created this whole realm and you get to play in it for us, and many of us love you for it, as the music lives on, breathing new life. U are an amazing interpreter. On a side note, I find it interesting how little you play with your pinky!!
John, thanks for sharing this time of yours.
Thank you so much John for all you have given to us all! I love the explanations and showing the moves. I could never pull that off!
Big fan.i am in Orlando now but was in Weymouth Massachusetts, right beside Boston.use to hang out with musicians who met John Mayer in person.good enough for me.if some day actually happens directly, would be great
I've been playing instruments by ear since I was a kid.
Paul
A wonderful, free-flowing lesson in how to practice, how to play, how to understand the guitar itself, and of course the reason so many of us consider Jerry Garcia one of the greatest players of all time.
I come back to this video whenever I am not feeling the will to practice in order to remind me that even the greats have to do it. John was the best choice to take Jerry's spot on stage.
Great vid man can't wait to follow the dead and co this spring and summer . Hey if your ever looking for some incredible live dead you should check out the beautiful jam it's a dark star warf rat dark star from 2/18/71 I bet you would really get into it . I won't spoil it for you but there's some great stuff in there. Alright well have a good one . Love what your doing
That sugaree improvise is sooo dreamy
when he plays my minds gets into an ease feeling
Love seeing you with D&C at Shoreline! Thank you.
Great shows!! I was there.. so grateful we had the opportunity before the world turned on it’s head.. 🤔
Thank you John for your insight on playing guitar and your methods, love your videos man. You with dead and company is so amazing. So Perfect you are playing with them. Your playing style sounds just like Jerry. It’s incredible.
This was really great, the best guitar thing I have seen online in a long time. So reverential to Mr jerry Garcia, I love it. Thanks John for letting us into your head and letting us see up close your alien spider fingers !
Thank you so much for your valuable video 😎👍 That was and very much is exactly what I needed to hear. You really never know how much you can help someone else until you try and you my friend really helped me with my playing and understanding difficulties in my own playing 🙏🫵😎and now my new favorite you tube channel 👍👍🍻😎
I’m not sure if I’ve head this song though probably have 100 times, what an amazing change . It’s such a dead vibe . They are the only band that would write like this I know of.
I need a full album of John Mayer whistling while he plays guitar
Thank you! 🌻 Sweet! A flock of Doves just now flew into my yard, as I am listening to this…🩵
Totally dug the insights. I really think this younger generation of musicians are way more forthcoming than the ones I grew up trying to learn from. Videos like this have helped me a ton to love playing again. Thanks for sharing 😊
As a newly converted deadhead who is desperately trying to learn GD guitar parts, this was incredibly thorough. I cant follow all of it yet but i would love to see more GD song instruction! You play wonderfully! Hearing that Slipknot into Franklins tower was amazing! I hope to be able to play like you / Jerry / Bobby some day!
Dude just learning a couple of Grateful Dead has completely opened my eyes to hOw much I don’t know as far as chords and major scale. I hit a plateau of just playing the blues and hitting those juicy licks but now I feel like a beginner again. The major scale is so different than just playing just blues.
I wasn’t to fond of a Mayer before but after dead and company just proves he’s probably the greatest millennial guitarist. Hats off to you man if you read this
Thanks for letting us in on the process and sharing tips. I can’t wait to get home and grab my guitar
What a guitar hero superb musician
Love the way he makes it look so easy
I think the way he analysis the chords is truly amazing
Great keep these videos coming
Thanks John
Great work
Evening, I've never played a guitar in my life but since my teens have loved the sound it can deliver.
I really enjoyed this video, I'll be in DC & NC this summer and cannot wait! Plus heavy couch tour, us 50+ love that option...
richard barrett love the couch tour also , so nice to have that option when we can’t hit the road and see them in person .
