I disagree, age is an excuse, especially where experience is involved. Here's the thing too, you guys said that Aang got a lot of Katara's lines, but that's the way it was written. What I noticed is that in many ways, they take things away that the actress could play with. I think the best scene with her, is when she's literally just playing with Aang. Because there's something to play with there. Its just two kids playing and even though its a short little thing, it feels natural. A lot of it though feels very rehearsed and stage directed and I think that totally due to their age and lack of experience. It will be interesting to see them after the time skip. What I hope is that they take that time to maybe watch the original again and pick out little things that they can use to help them. I fully believe in Katara's actress though, she CAN do this.
I like the actress of Katara during interviews, (i can't spell her name😅) but really need to master facial expressions. Coz sometimes even with a serious scene she looks like she's about to burst to laugh and her eyes were often dead.
There's a lot of people hating the series but if you take the approach of a retelling of the story from a different perspective, and maybe different set of facts, it's been really well done. Imagine how many stories through history have originated from same single event but told totally different from different people? It doesn't take away from the story telling. Sure, acting may be a little stiff at first but improves towards the end. Well worth a second and third season.
It's so saaad because everyone on my feed loved the netflix adaptation but "experts", hates it. You dont even know how many YT vids gets fed to me about the whole negative wave/trend of hating it. I love complex films and I definitely am not easily 'pleased' but this adaptation is good. can be better for sure, but the effort they put in is there. How else can you adapt a 20 episode season into 8 episodes that is seamless and not as episodes within episodes. People will tell me atla shouldnt have been adapted either way... but I really think live actions are sorta cool when did right and respected the og material and this one did! The casual fans who watched this from their childhood felt nostalgic and just enjoyed it. Not all of us are "experts" or blinded by nostalgia to be openminded. People just jumped on this trend of hating it and it snowballed into everyone nitpicking why this didnt felt like "avatar, the nickelodeon show' It's crazy because I LOVED this show for a decade and loving this adaptation makes me feel like I am not a "fan enough" lol
@@gltterati I mostly feel like people hate it so early because they want to be the first ones to strike controversy in their comment sections and boost engagement. Everyone secretly loves the show deep down 😂
I will say this, IMHO, adapting Korra to live action, I think, would've been MUCH better. Naturally being a much more serious and mature animation, I think it would've been much easier to adapt to live action, maybe even improved on the animation in certain respects. Regardless, I love the ATLA adaptation and hope for seasons 2 and 3.
I agree with Azula. Don't get me wrong, I love Azula in the Cartoon, especially the Voice. BUT while I do love the voice, she definitely didn't sound like a 14 year old lmao So I totally don't mind her potrayal on this live action.
Yeah I really like how they tied several episodes together in a way that works so well! I really didn't mind Katara. Loved Jet and Teoh and the Mechanist. 😊
Meesh enjoyed the mixing of the plot lines here too! I didn't really mind either, it was only Katara's monologue about her mom (to Jet) that kind of threw me off lol I couldn't take it seriously but hopefully she gets better with time! -D
Hey Avatar Meesh and Avatar Dee how it been. I hope you two weekend is going well. This was a great episode. We are introduced to Azula as she infiltrated a Firenation resistance as she led them to their death. I like the casting of Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee as the Azula music plays in the background. I'm surprised with the change they had where Zuko is held in respectable regards than her. With Ozai using Zuko to motivate Azula. The City of Omashu looks amazing. I like the casting of Jet and the Freedom Fighters (Pipsqueak, The Duke, Long Shot, and Smellerbee). As well the casting of Teo and Sai, who made their first appearance in episode 17, the Northern Air Temple. I like how in the live action uses Katara trauma of her losing her mother as a mental block on her not getting the Waterwhip. And I like how she must overcome that with remembering the best thing about her mother that she was able to get over the hurdle. The Aang and Zuko fight was great as well as hilarious as Zuko getting hit by the woman 😂 Cabbage man getting his cabbage destroyed moment was a great moment. As well the Katara, Jet and Freedom Fighters fight with the Firenation spies were great, too. As Iroh helped Zuko escape as Aang is captured by Omashu soldiers. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing
What's going on, Avatar Rob!! Happy weekend to you too 😊 always a treat to read your insights & always appreciate your positive undertones! Agreed - interesting how the LA show runners went with the route of Ozai using Zuko to motivate Azula... Kind of like the change though as it adds more nuance to Ozai's character and he's not just a big, scary dictator like in the animated series. We've been enjoying watching this LA series so far (although it has it's changes, we remain optimistic!) Have a great day ahead! -D
@MeeshDeeReacts back at you. I really enjoy your two reactions/commentary on the show. I completely agree that the actress who plays Katara needs more work. I like the changes they made with Ozai in this live action, too. I like that not everything needs to be like the animated series. You can make changes as long as it stays loyal to the story and the characters. Most folks problem is the can't separate the live action with the animated series and accept that the live action is their own thing. Everyone who hated the live action wants everything to be like the animated series, with everything being frame by frame. Scene by scene like some fans was angry in episode 1 that the show started off with Sozin and the Fire benders killing the Air Nomads instead of going directly into the the beginning when Katara and Sokka meet Aang. But I hope the rest of your day is enjoyable, you two.
The fact that Katara didn't get her own semi-focused episode adaptation ("imprisoned") the same way Sokka was given his in episode 2 speaks volume in y opinion . I like this actress, very pretty , with good vibes and visually she looks the part but i can't help but be frustrated by her acting skills too . Maybe she should rewatch the cartoon and focus on understanding her character more . It could also be that she was not well directed so the blame would lay on the show runners, diretors, ect , I hate that somehow Katara is not more the focus of the show because of this acting skill issue , in the original Katara is the glue that holds team avatar together . Normally we should all feel for team avatar in this show the way we feel for team Zuko/Iroh in this show . and for me it's not the case .
For me it's the arms. They aren't necessarily bad, but the young actors don't know what to do with them in the scenes when just talking so they look pretty stoic and it drains any emotion, but Katara is the worst for it. I hope they get better direction in season 2 to be more animated in their acting.
Fun fact:the guy that played zuko taught the guy who played aang his moves for his bending because he had to come up with things to do in 10 minutes so so guy who play zuko taught him thing that would look cool
I think the Katara actor is actually not bad, I initially found her the hardest to appreciate too as the male leads are so similar to their cartoon/ anime counterparts. God Sauka feels like he’s been picked right from the anime and put in the live action. I like a lot of the changes in the live action, but one thing I don’t think gets enough attention is that in the cartoon Katara leaves the tent to go and find her dad and never sees her mom again (and looks like she’s about 4 when this is happening). In the live action she sees her mom get burned to death and looks like she’s 9. The reactions I’ve seen, most of the reactors are upset over this and turn away, but I believe we see it 3 times because the writers are hammering home the affect this has had on this version of Katara. That’s why you don’t see as much emotion from this Katara as she’s had too bury such a traumatic experience. I suspect after her experiences with Jet and Koe you’ll see more character development.
The acting for Katara seemed off to me and I'm not even familiar with the original character. I feel like Im not seeing enough on her face in different scenarios. Also hoping the actress can improve because she has a good look and potential. Also I agree that these world locations look amazing...they really killed it.
I also really liked the creative liberties they took with this episode! Combining separate storylines from like 3 different cartoon episodes was risky, but thematically i think they made it fit very well. And yeah Dee, I know what you mean about Katara's preformance, it can be pretty distracting sometimes. And the way her role keeps getting diminished in the writing doesn't help either. But hopefully stuff like this can be improved upon if they do get a second season. And I genuinely DO want a second season!
The show gets way better after episode 4. IMO, episode 5,6, and 7 are the strongest. I have not seen the finale yet. I cant wait to see you guys react to them.
I enjoyed this series overall. I think the parts that they nail, they really nail. Particularly Iroh and Zuko's relationship is the best. I do agree some of the acting and storytelling aspects are a bit weak at times but i feel like this will improve with time. People are too quick to judge on this show. Thats why i dont like when people bash a show to the point where studios cancel the show. With the live action ATLA, you really need at least 3-4 seasons to properly judge a series. It makes no sense to judge it this quickly. The first season of the cartoon was a lot of world building and filler as well. It really hit its stride in season 2 and then got absolutely amazing in season 3. People who hate it also need to realize that you cant cram 20 eps worth of material in 8 eps without issues. The production team is doing the best they can with whatever resources they have. I just dont want to people to judge it too harshly before we even get the full story out there. If after its 3-4 seasons run and its still making the same issues it made in season 1, then ill give it the Game of Thrones treatment. Lol People just need to give it time. Im glad you guys are enjoying the series overall.
I agree with you completely! It does take time to have a show be great. Not just 1 season! Especially with how much material there is to elaborate on. But we’re hopeful that Netflix will green light for S2 🙏🏽 Thanks for your insight and watching with us! ❤️ -D
@@MeeshDeeReacts i will say that im kinda excited to see Toph next season. And i think we'll definitely see a more ruthless Azula and friends next season. :)
I get so excited when I see you guys in my feed especially for this series. Watching something you love with cool people is a great feeling😊. Great points and commentary! This Katara reminds me of one of my friends, her face never really reflect her emotions. She could be really sad or frustrated about something but her face and sometimes her tone don’t really match the moment 😅. Katara did bother me a bit in the begining. It’s funny to see the cringe face Dee makes tho 😄. Don’t worry Dee, I’m sure she’ll get there by book two. I remind myself that the kids in Harry Potter started as noobs and were amazing pros by the end.
That girl playing Katara is definitely not a good actor, but the directors may be part of the problem too because she sounds like she's just reading lines.
Wassup Meesh and Dee! Wonderful to see you guys reacting as always. I gotta say I am a little shocked at how much you’re liking this show. Being probably the most recent reactors of the original series I’ve seen on UA-cam I thought for sure you’d have more issues with the changes that they’ve made to the characters and story. I’m trying to keep an open mind myself but it’s very hard when they gloss over so many things that we all cherish from the original. And the little to no time they spend on some of the interactions with the side characters. It all to me feels so rushed it’s hard for those moments to have an impact. I do think the show is visually beautiful and the casting likenesses are spot on. However those alone can’t get me over the obvious fumbles they’ve had in this series. Regardless I’m glad you’re enjoying and I wonder if there’s maybe a discussion video you guys might have at the end of the Netflix series to kind of recap your comparisons and opinions to the original?
2:20 lol cute/funny moment here 6:00 I felt the same. She didn’t quite look as menacing as the cartoon Azula. I’ve liked all the actors chosen overall but Azula and her crew didn’t quite look right. I’ll give it time though to see them grow into the characters. 13:39 Dee is having a rough go at identifying characters this episode lol 16:08 didn’t make sense to me that Katara coming from snow would be too cold here. I think I would have liked Jet try to give her the covering and her say she’s not cold at all or something. I disagree with the Katara acting. There’s definitely inexperience and it shows a bit but overall I think it’s been fine. I think all the kid actor’s inexperience shows in this series. Hasn’t been awful but noticeable. None has blown me away with great acting but it’s been solid after ep1 for me. I think it got better over time. Loved yall reaction as always.
finally someone else think that kiawentiio's (katara) acting is...bad. wholeheartedly agree with dee that her acting was hard to watch. i cringed in her every scene and had to apuse and compose myself. i really don't think it's the writing problem, she's just so...flat. katara had more expressions in the animation 😬
people have been so toxic to this show and hating on these CHILD ACTORS. like wtf. We are allowed to have our opinions, but cmon where's the humanity???! im so mad at ppl blaming these kids. Ther just children ffs. We have ZERO humanity, especially people on the internet
I think one of the problems with Katara is that the dynamic of her and Sokka changed. Katara is more traumatised by her mum's death and didn't take that as a motivation for life. She was not the one to take care of Sokka in this series. By taking away her motherliness and caring, they took away so much from Katara. I heard they wanted to change that because they saw it as an issue that the girl in the group was the mum. However, the way they executed their feminism makes it look like the opposite. 🤷🏽♀️ They put much more emphasis and importance on Sokka and his character and his arc, and I kind of don't get it. I feel like Sokka was already important and intelligent enough in the cartoon. He grew into himself and ovservant viewers noticed how he is the idea guy. I fully believe that this is not Kiawntiio's fault, because blaming a teenage girl, the only girl in the main cast, for her bad acting, is just incredibly rude and careless. Also, the actors don't decide how they play. At least not all of it, and with everything they already changed about Katara in the writing, it seems like a director's or showrunner's decision to keep Katara more subdued in order not to feed into the emotional woman trope or the angry woman trope, or even into the angry woman of color trope. But the thing is, Katara has every damn right to be angry. This Katara here, however, seems like she retreated into a shell after her mother's death and let Sokka boss her around and didn't have to take care of her family. Only now, that she left her home, does she manage to crawl out of this shell and demand more agency from Sokka, which he is reluctant to give. Katara here is just a kid, a real kid, she was not forced to grow up so fast. Maybe she will become the Katara we know and love throughout the series, but we don't know. It's a change that makes sense and fits with all the other changes, but no one has to like it. I don't like this change. I prefer mature Katara who takes on more responsibility and who's mad about having to take on so much responsibility at her age. This Katara is a kid. The cartoon's Katara was a young woman. And I feel like that's the biggest change. But I definitely get your concerns about the acting, because I also feel like her face doesn't act much. Or at least, not enough, not with the emotions that these situations should invoke in her. I wonder if it's age. I mean, I didn't feel any female rage at fourteen yet, or anger at the injustices in the world🤷🏽♀️ the actor gets older and learns what it means to be a woman, maybe this will help🤷🏽♀️ Or the showrunners stick to what they like and don't care what we think and think we're just complaining because we like to🤷🏽♀️ or they realise they went too far with Katara's character change and Kiawentiio will be allowed to show more emotion, or they want Katara to become more bossy throughout the series and have her personality evolve with their adventures🤷🏽♀️ We don't know. I have hope, but not much. Whatever it was, I'm really mad that Katara got so taken down. She's my favourite character, and now she's just some kid. And I'm mad at Sokka for getting all of these moments and for getting part of Katara's character, and urgh, this feels like just another example of Hollywood not understanding what feminism is. And maybe I'm wrong, but that's just what it felt like to me, so I totally understand your concerns, Dee.
Did you guys notice when Kitara Waterbend and the water and it hit her face her face was still dry when it should've been wet. Terrible on Netlfix's part.
i 1000 percent agree about the katara actress she is so bad. but we need to give her the benefit of the doubt since her entire cxr is written to be sooo boring everything she does just takes me out of the show. katara has been cxr assassinated by the show runners i hope they get better writers for se 2 since its a really good show. It horrifies me you are about to witness the disaster the next episode is good luck lol...by the end of the next epi i was pulling out my hair screaming why why why lol but iroh and zuko just keep saving this episodes when ever they are on screen. is it just me or was the villains of this show more interesting than the main cast.
I hope they cast a Blasian to play Toph that would be so cool. That way you honor the Series having more Asians and a breakthrough for more blacks to be in Avatar The Last Airbender Series.
the series has a crap director, they should be giving these actors direction on what the scene requires...and aside from the weak acting, every god damn line is so exasperated and trying to sound so grandiose its fucking cringy as hell, this isnt a theater production ffs
Yep, episode 3 and 4 are the ones that I did not like. From episode 5, at least for me, it returns to the level of the first two episodes, and even surpass them on episode 6.

they have a chance to focus on our two girls next season. aang hasn't started training waterbending yet so we may still get a jealous katara.
Yooo the 2nd COOKING 😅
That girl playing Katara is definitely not a good actor, but the directors may be part of the problem too because she sounds like she's just reading lines.
Meesh & Dee Truly Such A Awesome Video Today!!🔥🐐🐐💎
❤️❤️❤️
Agreed. The actress is probably the best looking Katara, but she's not a good actress
“Sunrise”. It was a “sunrise”.
Looking forward to more :)
More to come!❤️
Wassup Meesh and Dee!
2:20 lol cute/funny moment here
6:00 I felt the same. She didn’t quite look as menacing as the cartoon Azula. I’ve liked all the actors chosen overall but Azula and her crew didn’t quite look right. I’ll give it time though to see them grow into the characters.
13:39 Dee is having a rough go at identifying characters this episode lol
16:08 didn’t make sense to me that Katara coming from snow would be too cold here.
They put much more emphasis and importance on Sokka and his character and his arc, and I kind of don't get it.
I mean, I didn't feel any female rage at fourteen yet, or anger at the injustices in the world🤷🏽♀️ the actor gets older and learns what it means to be a woman, maybe this will help🤷🏽♀️
Or the showrunners stick to what they like and don't care what we think and think we're just complaining because we like to🤷🏽♀️ or they realise they went too far with Katara's character change and Kiawentiio will be allowed to show more emotion, or they want Katara to become more bossy throughout the series and have her personality evolve with their adventures🤷🏽♀️ We don't know.
All of this^ 💯 agree with you! 🙏🏽
-D
Did you guys notice when Kitara Waterbend and the water and it hit her face her face was still dry when it should've been wet. Terrible on Netlfix's part.
LMAO good call out
i 1000 percent agree about the katara actress she is so bad. but we need to give her the benefit of the doubt since her entire cxr is written to be sooo boring everything she does just takes me out of the show. katara has been cxr assassinated by the show runners i hope they get better writers for se 2 since its a really good show.
"I have been giving her the benefit of the doubt" - nope, every episode you have been critical.
I hope they cast a Blasian to play Toph that would be so cool. That way you honor the Series having more Asians and a breakthrough for more blacks to be in Avatar The Last Airbender Series.
Wait for the disappointment in the next episode.
the series has a crap director, they should be giving these actors direction on what the scene requires...and aside from the weak acting, every god damn line is so exasperated and trying to sound so grandiose its fucking cringy as hell, this isnt a theater production ffs
it gets worse before it gets better
fr ep 3 was the worst one for me
@@kacperkozio9345and then from 6 it gets better
Like they stuck up in 3-4-5 in the middle
Because the start was amazing
Yep, episode 3 and 4 are the ones that I did not like. From episode 5, at least for me, it returns to the level of the first two episodes, and even surpass them on episode 6.
@@salvatoreruggiero6551the zuko and Iroh scenes in episode 4 are great though
@@inoh558 yeah, this moment was touching but in my opinion the best out of all of them were "Masks" and "Aang"
