You can totally see the CRAZY with LA Azula, but you have to be paying attention, and have some experience with reading people's expressions. I think the actress is doing a hell of a job of bringing the character to life.
the live action added a lot from the novels and comics. kuruk’s past and azula’s hatred over her mother for abandoning her so she had to do everything to drum up the fire lord’s favor.
I feel like the reason why Azula here isn't as crazy, is because she's not there... yet. We don't see Azula in the original until season 2, I believe that they're developing her to reach that Azula we're used to. More like an origin story I suppose.

Fun fact, Aubrey Plaza actually has been in an Avatar series before. She was one of the waterbending twins in Legend Of Korra (Eska the crazy one, who had a crush on Bolin).
Regarding the "everything looks so clean" criticism, this is a common complaint across many Netflix shows and I think it very much comes down to budget and production time scales. The challenge with having people look dirtied up is making sure it remains consistent across multiple shots, across multiple days of filming. This means a need for a larger makeup team and the actors more time being prepped and less time actually filming; adding more days to the filming schedule.
Which is doubly cost prohibitive due to kids only filming for short periods of time and rarely at night. Adding distress to costumes would have doubled time and cost for this show
@@ladyclaue That may be so but. She must start season 2 confident in being sent out to do here thing. Playing unstable now would undermind that. If they get another season the real acting challenge begins. Holding back the crazy.

When Princess Yue appeared onscreen, I was like : "Heeeey That's Rosa Salazar !!!! Wait, that's not right... Ooooh, that's Amber Midthunder !!!" Then it hit me ! I remembered the news of her casting in the series over a year ago, and hot on the heels of Prey (that movie was awesome), I thought that was an amazing news ! So happy to see her shine (albeit briefly) in Avatar !
Jenna Ortega could do Mai well. About Yue and Sokka - it is strongly implied that she "met" him long ago by going through the spirit realm, even when we saw her as a 3 tailed Fox there was a hint that she already knew him well. That's why she fell for him instantly - she really fell for him long ago, that's why she broke off her betrothal - she was already in love. I felt this was a great way to explain the rather sudden love story in the animated version where she meets Sokka and they exchange 5 words and she is in love - always felt so insanely rushed to me. Now I think they played this too subtle, but the clues are all there and with the fox from before it all kinks together, but I wish they would have added one direct statement, something like after Sokka figures out she was the fox, she could have said, "I have been watching you for years." or perhaps less stockerish, "I have run across you many time in dreams when I have been in the spirit world."
Azulas beggining character isnt crazy at all. Just intelligent and ruthless, she literally only becomes deranged in the final season Ps: for the people saying saying was always crazy, here's the definition of crazy/insane: mental illness of such a severe nature that a person cannot distinguish fantasy from reality, cannot conduct her/his affairs due to psychosis, or is subject to uncontrollable impulsive behavior. Insanity is distinguished from low intelligence or mental deficiency due to age or injury. Something that only happens to azula in the final seasons
5:50 No, she learned how to blood bend in season 3, where they encountered an Elder southern water tribe member who was using Blood Bending to capture and in prison citizens of the fire nation
12:31 I love Lightningbending, but I can't help but think it's weird for that to be a type of Firebending tbh. Other than the fact that fire & lightning are both plasma, there doesn't seem to be much connection between the two (as far as I'm aware) - it might've acc fit Airbending more imo. Airbenders can control all features of air (wind, speed, temperature, sound, etc), so it would make sense if they could control the electrical charge of air as well (like Air Fairies in Fate: the Winx Saga, or air elements from Elemental)
One thing I appreciate about this adaptation is how they changed Hahn, who in the original was a jerk and a failure of a warrior defeated in a one-off scene, into a decent person.
@@davidnobre5660 Because I feel like it adds more maturity to this world. When you have a set number of recognizable characters it helps to use them to add depth. With this version of Hahn we saw that (1) not all men are misogynist since he accepted Yue's betrothal breaking, (2) he wants to learn since he asks Sokka about Fire Nation armor, (3) he had a good relationship with Arnook covering his retreat. I suppose I have a mindset of, if you're going to make an adaption and don't change anything, what's the point. The live action show will never replace or perfectly mimic the original. It's meant to augment it and tell the same story with different beats. Going in with any other expectations is a setup for disappointment.
Forreal. There will always be those to crap on live-action adaptations simply for existing, often without even watching them. I've learned to just ignore them.
I have been enjoying your reactions. I find them refreshing and entertaining, so can’t wait for your last episode reaction. In regards to Azula, everyone expect her to be crazy, but if I remember correctly, that was a development of the 3rd season of the cartoon. That is her development arch. I think this season did a great job setting the foundations for that development.
26:16 I've heard that complaint from multiple ppl tbh, & I think it's fair. The costumes look cool, but they look like costumes. They're so bright & crisp that it doesn't look lived in.
I honestly like the little tweaks they've done with the villains in this adaptation. If I were to say there was anything lacking in the original it was that the villains seemed a little flat outside of Azula, who ironically also didn't have any notable character arc introduced until The Beach episode and was just a cold calculating badass up to that point. They feel less...ahem...two dimensional this time around whilst still remaining true to their overall characters. And shoutout to Dallas Liu whom I hope gets a lot more work in years to come because he's got some serious talent both as a martial artist and an actor.
agree, none of them had any depth or layers to their characters, even ozai is one dimensional in the original series, the live action is doing them very well
1:58 I don't know if they were trying to make it unclear if Zuko died in order to build suspense, but I think it would've been cool to see him firebend the explosions to save himself tbh (like in the animated show). I would love to see more instances of firebenders being able to extinguish fires or use firebending in a defensive/ constructive way.
The first time I watched I lowkey got chills when Azula was like “You wanna test me? Let me loose!” To her father like she’s some monster ready to go on a rampage😂 I’m ready to see her vs Katara and Aang!!
I was pleasantly surprised to see Amber Midthunder in this episode. I've enjoyed her in everything that I've seen since I first saw her in the Legion series. I want to rewatch that show again and check out some reactions to it. The North Water tribe view on women not being trained to fight, but to heal I don't completely agree with. Yeah, the survival of a people depends on women to have children, but everyone needs to know how to protect themselves and the children in a community. I think the men and the women should learn combat and medical techniques. It would be just as wrong if it was the men that weren't allowed to fight and only heal. Even children should learn how to protect themselves as early as possible because adults aren't always able to be there to help. I want my future kids to learn martial arts and find one that fits their personality. That fight with Katara and the Master Waterbender was pretty cool to watch. I loved her using the Earthbender technique she borrowed from Bumi using ice instead of rock. That's where true skill is shown when you can adapt a technique into your own style of combat and what I'd be trying to do if I had powers. I'd be traveling the world getting inspiration from the world and people around me. I'm looking forward to the season finale, but sad that a certain character isn't going to be in the next Season. I don't know if that character comes back in some way in the animated series so I'll just have to wait and see. Enjoyed the reaction 👍👍✌ out.

I don't want beat for beat everything like the anime. I am loving all the changes and flavors added to this. The fact that they're weaving backstories almost seamlessly ... that part I am loving more than anime.
I wish it was more like the hbo the last of us where they kept everything the same but added the new backstory scenes that add more to the original story. Those scenes are the parts I enjoy so far
12:00 I know what they're going for but there's no world where Azula directly refuses Ozai, let alone with this tone. I know she's his favorite, but if she defied him, turned her back on him and bent lightning near him? Ozai might just kill her on the spot. Also I feel like Azula would just fight them both to prove she's better lol.
Iron had a back story. They literally started episode 1 with Ang's friends and family getting destroyed. Sokka wasn't good enough to "lead is tribe" as he overheard his dad talking and Katara literally watched her Mom get toasted in front of her. I think those were back stories that were told in multiple ways as well.
In avatar, water tribe attires are inspired by Korean culture. So the fact that there north and south tribes remind me of North and South Korea, especially when are restrictions in the North.
Yes, because of this her fight with Pakky feels forced. Anime Katara has mom/leader vibes, she's stubborn as all hell and won't compromise for nothing. Here she's a nice girl that's a great emotional support. However, she doesn't feel like a fighter. She doesn't feel like the kind of person who will freeze two dudes to a wall to interrogate them for information
It just occurred to me that they swapped Suki and Yue's storylines with Sokka. Think about it. Sokka in season 2 of the OG show looks at Suki and tries to figure out who she is. Here he looks at Yue and thinks the same. With Yue's OG story sokka tries to approach and smooth talk Yue only to fail and be super awkward whereas in this show Suki and Sokka are the ones super awkward. Kind of a clever swap.
OMGOSH... A MARTINEZ 😮😊 happy he is still around... Soap opera days... He and Robin Wright worked together... A has made it to the big time..... Also. Michael T Wieds also made it out with ,PRETENDER.
I really wish they'd given Sokka and Yue more of a friendship vibe than trying to force a relationship in less than 24hrs. I understand they were a couple in the series, but they also had plenty of time to establish their relationship. This version feels just like the movie did, unnatural and out of place. As for Azula, given some time I think she will grow into her own menace of a character. My only gripes about her (Netflix's fault) are, 1. Where the hell are her blue flames?!? Literally her main distinguisher, and they missed it. It's also what made her final Agni Kai with Zuko look so damn spectacular. 2. The lightning looked cool and all, but what the hell did she hit? A house fly?? There was literally no damage anywhere. Just a little spark.
I actually disagree, I think this isn’t like the movie at all, they actually give a reason for Sokka and Yue to have a connection. By inserting Yue early as that fox spirit, it gives foundation to explain why Sokka feels connected and why Yue would like him. And tbh, in the animated show, it’s not really as if that relationship was that developed either. It had just as much time as this Netflix show did.
@@CaptainPikeachu Certain things don't translate well in live-action. The animated series had 3 episodes to showcase a romance between the 2. Inserting Yue as a fox in the spirit world for 2 mins in no way justifies the kiss or her claiming he's the "man of her dreams", after LITERALLY only seeing him that one time and not even doing anything to help lol. (really, the episode would've played out the exact same way if she wasn't even there). They could've told her story and have him be smitten without it leading to a corny kiss and it would've still carried the same emotional weight at the end.
This series is great the only real problem is pacing, things happens too fast compared to the animation because the "every 23 minute a whole story arc" helps a lot, and keep sokka relationships makes them too cheesy and rush. Katara is also a bit too reduced in the cartoon she is more impactful
I wished they approached the sexism differently, like maybe if they said that women are more attuned to healing powers, and so female waterbenders are deemed too valuable to use as a direct combatant. Would've more thematically matched Aang's fear of losing them.
In the cartoon we only see Azula when she's already sent out into the world. Here we see her slowly growing into the crazy
She’s high key always been crazy but I get what you mean, Sozin purposely pushing her over the edge

Agree, no time in the episodes for character development. Zuko is the only one where they include some backstory in each episode.
12:21 YIKES! 😭😂
In original katara was a savage and fierce character , the most powerfull women in the series, but here the character lacks that fire😢😢😢😢
Yea I don’t get Katara vibes from her at all
Yes, because of this her fight with Pakky feels forced.
Is it just me or does jaby laugh like vatu the dark spirt😂😂😂😂
The actress playing Azula does look like Achara 👀
I'm number 12. I'm honoured :)
Yue is charming as hell
It just occurred to me that they swapped Suki and Yue's storylines with Sokka. Think about it. Sokka in season 2 of the OG show looks at Suki and tries to figure out who she is. Here he looks at Yue and thinks the same. With Yue's OG story sokka tries to approach and smooth talk Yue only to fail and be super awkward whereas in this show Suki and Sokka are the ones super awkward.
Kind of a clever swap.
Am still yet to meet the fiery overbearing mother Katara. She's still acting jolly and sweet.
OMGOSH...
A MARTINEZ 😮😊
happy he is still around...
Soap opera days...
He and Robin Wright worked together...
A has made it to the big time.....
Also. Michael T Wieds also made it out with ,PRETENDER.
Kinda agree with the cast of azula, the actress gives the vibes of a good girl, and for now she is so far to reach the presence of the character
I think Azula is on the path to crazy and in the cartoon they started after she had become crazy.
Happy to be one of the 12!
This series is great the only real problem is pacing, things happens too fast compared to the animation because the "every 23 minute a whole story arc" helps a lot, and keep sokka relationships makes them too cheesy and rush. Katara is also a bit too reduced in the cartoon she is more impactful
She is water blender! Caught me off gaurd 😂😂
1:36 Yikes! 😂
It's sad to see Kuruk suffered a lot during his time as the avatar just because of the previous avatar's mistakes.
Sokka got that Frizz
hey are you guys going to watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith?
Where did the "azula" kirk come from? 😂😂😂 did not see that coming😂😂😂
2:01 I didn't know Lionel Richie was in this show
Not water-blender💀😂
14:03 just reminded me of the outta nowhere cursing in kid movies like Spy Kids🤣
I wished they approached the sexism differently, like maybe if they said that women are more attuned to healing powers, and so female waterbenders are deemed too valuable to use as a direct combatant. Would've more thematically matched Aang's fear of losing them.
Did chatgpt worte these dialogues?
I have been waiting.
We need the pitch meeting Madame wen reaction soon please
Part of the 12!
Amber Midthunder is pure magic
Ok it’s pretty clear not a single avatar has had a team.
