The ability to say "no" part got me. We're so privileged as first generation Indian Americans. Praise to our parents for paving the way - thanks munchies for sharing
This is where #Munchies excels at what it does best. Introducing a family that works together for the common good with respect for each members individuality -- the complete opposite of what I grew up in. Thanks to the Patel family for sharing their story and continued happiness and success (not just in business, but in life).
Took a class from Heena at San Francisco Cooking School. She’s not only an insane cook but also one of the kindest people I’ve met to emerge as a top sf chef. Seriously though, Heena’s food is crazy
There aren’t a lot of Gujarati restaurants in the US let alone women owned, so it’s really cool to see it happen. I’m Gujarati American and feeling super inspired by this family. Wishing them all the best and planning to go their restaurant when I go to SF.
@@zarf4219 - definitely need to check it out when I’m next in town! Growing up, there were zero. It’s become a more recent thing in the last 10 years. I know there are pockets of places like Edison, NJ, Bensalem, PA, SoCal, however there are still a lot more northern and southern restaurants (which are also my favorites) around without having to travel far.
Heena aunty is so adorable and can I just say what a beautiful family inside and out. When the daughter was tearing up about recognizing the privilege ahhh it really struck a chord. How wonderful xoxox love to see desi families thrive
I just love this story, seriously. Her story is so inspiring. I can feel the love in this, I love how close they are as a family. They have done good. I wish I could taste the food.
The program "La Cocina" that helped the Chef/Owner get started sounds incredible and I'm glad she gave them a hearty shout out in the piece here. I wonder if it's a government program or an NGO or something. Should be more like it around the country.
I can't believe nobody has commented on how absolutely gorgeous Heema is!! She's just gotten more attractive over time, and this video shows that she's just as beautiful on the inside. What an amazing woman and family, I wish them the best life has to offer and much more success for many years to come!! I wish I wasn't so far away from San Diego, I'd love to be able to eat at their restaurant!! Maybe one day lol 🤷🏼♀️🤞🏻
I always want to be able to walk into a restaurant and say "give me the full experience" I want to learn, and having someone so passionate about their food really does remove barriers.
I love this... Vice, this is a wonderful way to highlight people with a dream and determination. “No” is a profound word. What a wonderful family and story. You are on my bucket list when I'm in SFO.❤️
family goals, this is should be a teachable moment that families can co exist under pressure and still smile at each other at the dinner table, i am so proud of this family especially being that the dad is an east african like me.
Beautiful story of many 1st generation to carry on what out parents accomplished and achieved. Now a legacy is born, congratulations to your endeavors and and munchies for great pieces like this
Heena is so gorgeous and the pride you see on her face is amazing. The passion is there and the food looks delicious. Way to take the opportunity for cooking classes.
I was here yesterday and the food is exceptionally good. Some dishes are authentic to the bone while others are modern interpretations of traditional foods which is an interesting combination to have. Nonetheless worth the experience. It was a great trip to my childhood in eating foods my Gujarati neighbors would send over all the time growing up.
i swear this family looks like a single father raising his 2 daughters and son... the mom looks like she can be a daughter and/or sister to her own daughter.
Indiana people are awesome man!! Still to this day I haven't met a bad one yet.. the food is good but man they love spicy food I was praying to the porcelain God for a week damn near
Lollll he’s just sitting there in like a Bill Burr voice going “Weee know you’re fucking proud of yourself honey, why don’t you pat yourself on the back more?!”
If you go to the restaurant’s website, it explains why she called it that. People called her dreams of professionally cooking “besharam”. She simply claimed the word and turned it into her own powerful “F you”.
@@norbonius her food is mediocre at best. Tried and tested. If you’re Hindu or Urdu speaking you will be aware that besharam is a word which goes far beyond a f you. It’s like basically naming a restaurant “puta” I’m sure you won’t do that
@@Honeymagmangospoof 1. It’s calling a woman shameless. And she owned it and said, “So what?” I can’t speak on how her food is, but I appreciate the attitude. 2. If you don’t think those of us with Latino heritage would do the same and own that shit, you are sorely mistaken.
imagine needing to say 'woman owned business' to prove something.. just saying, I don't see any of the great companies saying 'man owned business'.. the insecurity is real.

not really, "besharam" i think from her own perspective and experience the way she approached the story behind naming the place was more of her liberation by becoming more "shameless"- is the exact translation(i'm a hindi+gujrati speaker :), so noo its nowhere near "puta".
Most restaurants' chefs dont, its easier AND safer to wash hands more frequently than sanitize the gloves. If you don't "want anyone touching your food".... you'd kinda have to restrict to fast food chains only, where workers DO wear gloves as they are part timers that can't be trusted to do their job efficiently. Like, most pizzerias have chef spread/shape the pizza by hands afterall, most don't wear gloves while doing so.
Gloves are not very practical in most kitchens. Hot utensils, liquids and food in general + what this guy said about washing hands routinely being more sanitary than using gloves for extended periods of time.

@Timmy Tran lame
Nowadays even in India we say no. You guys are stuck with an impression of 70s and 80s India. Times have changed every where
@Timmy Tran Well, here we aren't even talking about food.
@Timmy Tran u good Tim?

This is my favorite restaurant in the world!

Would love to dine there! In what type of dish are the little (fried?} hollow balls utilized?
most likely for pani puri or dahi puri. there’s a lot of variations for both of those dishes

Nice guys and great looking food.
Can we have a part 2 where you go in depth about some of her dishes?
@Timmy Trantrue. Not even fine dining. Just two Gujarati dishes doesn't make it a Gujarati restaurant
Damn that looks so good!
Beautiful !
I love how they're just an average Indian American family 🙏❤️
This is the polar opposite of kitchen nightmares
