- This descriptive video shows how to remove rust from the chassis of a car/ truck or any vehicle...
I finally decided to take care of the rust on the chassis of my 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser.
Got all the tools necessary (Jacks, stands, rust converter , paint) for the job and had some time off from work to crawl under the truck and start the chassis rust removal.
Job was easy and fast and results are really good.
In the video I show the steps I took during the process...
------------------------
This is the rust converter I used - got it on Amazon - amzn.to/2Z785JX
Final coat rubberized paint -

Here re some of the things I used to make this video:
My main camera - A great Cannon G7X - amzn.to/2BnHi0C - Авто та транспорт
A rusted frame brought back to life will make any grown man shed tears of joy.
Your Pittsburgh jacks have been recalled
Never use rubberized it will eventually trap water once penitrated by a rock or something else
This is a super grate video. Thanks so much Sandy
Looks awesome!
THIS IS SO COOL
How did it hold up?
Broke my heart to see you spray it with a rubberized coating after all that hard work. Thats going to trap moisture and make it 5x worse.
Hi, planning on doing every step up to the rust converter.... I eventually want to finish with COSMOLINE RP-342, should i put something in between that and the rust converter?
Possibly the most dangerous way to lift a truck up. Use the frame to lift it. The jack will slip off that control arm super easily.
I was thinking the same thing very sketchy
He had the main jack under the frame you jackass
Just get some amsoil HD MP two coats no problem all protected and can go on all your metal
Nice vid! What about fluid film? Would you put it on after the undercoating for extra protection?
M S yeah I guess that can be done - but it’s like overprotective- like wearing 2 condoms 👍🏻 😆 LOL 👍🏻
Nice video, but fyi from my experience rubberized undercoating seems to hold moisture so I stopped using found fluid film is nice protection
Just a quick fyi. Double check your jack stands I think they're recalled by harbor freight for failure. Great video thanks
Sonny Bustos thanks man - will check at HF
Thank you a lot
thanks, good video; lots of comments, not that many good videos
I did this to my 2002 4runner slowly over the course of the summer. I "painted" the whole frame with RP342 Black (cosmoline). I recommend you also spray the inside of the frame with fluid film to prevent rust that may form undetected until it's too late.
------------------------- Quick-Glo isn't available . It's a mystery. -Quick Glo has disappeared. No one can contact the owner's that made a famous ad with Jay Leno. Inventories have disappeared in the U.S. ,U.K. and Australia. Does anyone know for sure what is happening? I ordered a large supply months ago from their Website which is still running. I rec'd nothing not even an email confirming my order. Quick-glo is the best for chrome and rust and as a preventative. If you know what has happened; please please report on your findings.
Do you have any suggestions for a product for the fluid film?
Hey, that's exactly what im planning on doing..Did you put RP342 Black over the rust converted layer, or did you put something in between
Good job, can't believe a Morden vehicle needs this kind of work👌
Yeah, this truck is from NJ - all winters with the salt helping to form the rust and corrosion
I have a 3 year old 4runner. There are surface rust on some of the welds. I treated it with rust converter a few times. Did not paint over it. I will see next spring if there are new rust.
Let me kmow
Good stuff... I found Corroseal to just be okay. The protective layer it creates isn't too durable. Avoid using rubber undercoating. It can trap moisture and cause even worse rust. The best option I found is Eastwood's rubberized rust encapsulator. Best of both worlds and easy to apply 💪🏼
Does it say not to use rubber? So what would be the ideal materials for this job! I need it urgently thank you God bless you
Woolwax
I have a fj as well.. frame rust is a problem on these..

Rust: I shall come back
The rust reformer is a very good step. You might want to reconsider using the rubberized undercoating it really doesn't work well and can actually speed up the rust. Another area you need to be concentrate on is inside the frame. The FJC rots from the inside out in many places.
J Jack Next step for me will be to insert spray oil/ grease into the frame through holes spread around the chassis
I AM SANDY my suggestion would be to use fluid film. You can get it reasonably through a discount auto parts store. You’re best to order the 360% spray can wand kit with a few cans through Amazon.
I AM SANDY be sure to join FJ Cruisers Rusted Frame Owners Unite for more help.
Can we get an update after 1 year plz
I'm planning on doing my lexus gx460 soon and had similar rust if not almost the same. Any chance you would do an update video for us? Would love to see it. Thanks!
Have you threatened your chassis? Got a prado 150 and it also has rusty welds from shortly ater dilivery 😢
a cheap needle scaler is waaay faster and does a better job, rust converters have acid and thick coatings do promote rust by trapping moisture and rust converter acid. get metal to clean brown [no scale] at least then coat with cold galvanising compound, lots of it, multiple wet thick coats. it creates an electro chemical condition where the zinc primer corrodes off, not the steel. plus it doesn't flake off or trap moisture so when you start to see brown through the primer simply recoat. easiest way ive found to protect undercarriage here in maine
nice. got any links to the product you use? thanks
I’d be interested in hearing about that product too…
A welders hammer is the tool to use I have chipped away at many frames and other rusty steels
Great job except for the rubberized stuff... it doesnt breath. Please don't use that stuff. Will rust from the inside out.
i agree! The cleaning process and rust converter was great until i noticed the rubberized spray. That is a death sentence for any undercarriage.
@@anavan7 so instead of spray is it best to leave after the rust converter ?
Andy C for “preventative” rust treatment yes. There’s the optional black gloss paint for final chassis coverage but only if you prep the prior stages very well. Look up Corroseal Water-Based Rust Converter Metal Primer.
@@andyc609 spray it with grease
@@anavan7 what would you recommend? Most undercarriage sprays I'm seeing are all rubberized. You saying rustoleum and the other companies aren't good products? I gotta do this with my truck. Climbed under it yesterday and was pretty disappointed
Would be nice with an update, how does it look like now?
What’ll happen if you just use the rust converter and no undercoating
Get a grinder and attach a 5/8 wire brush. It gets all the rust off effortlessly. You will need full-body protection from the wires flying around.
Yup, so far, I find grinder a d wire brush are the best combo.
What to do once grinded all rust off .. regular black paint ? Krown? Fluid film?
@@solace4114 POR 15 rust prep, then use POR-15 Rust Preventive Paint with a brush. Just make sure the paint doesn’t touch you skin because it will stay on for weeks.
Can you spray that coroseal ?
Fernando Monterey California - I don’t know if they sell that option - and besides it’s a bit think ... so not sure how it would work with a spray gun....
It’s watery like milk. I was just planning on a test spray with a harbor freight $10 gun
I was wondering that myself. I wonder if you can thin it out a bit with more base chemical. Can't remember what he said it was.
Great video. Even more entertaining...is reading all of the expert opinions listed here. Lol
Many of the "opinions" are damn good advice
Corrolseal followed by Por 15 is my method
Lots of great work but..... The rust on these vehicles is inside the frame and unless you provide more drain holes and use an oil based product, the rust will continue and the frame will rot. Second, the use of a rubberized undercoat is a really bad idea because the moisture will get under it, be locked in and really rot the frame. I'm guessing by now the frame needs massive metal work.
Good stuff
i'm about to do this do my entire frame...
There is a rustoleum product that did very well in a test on Project Farm. It's a Rust Reformer and Paint all in one. I think you can get it in colors, so I can do the silver body colored areas, or grey components with a grey color and frame with black.
👍
Use the rust converter but do not paint it. Better to apply lanoguard or other lanolin based protection instead. Paint will just trap moisture and end up worse.

Hi good video in the UK we use a product called lanoguard made from sheep wool check the videos out
Get a needle scaler from Harbor Freight.

Only 3 OSHA violations. nice!
Glad those axle stands didn't take you out, drop them in the trash ASAP.
I would probably wear gloves and mask? Rust can be cured but you only have 2 eyes and lungs.
Good vids though 👍
Fernando Monterey California yeah - you’re right. A bit too excited to film that video... should’ve worn glasses at least !
Next time just sand blast mate,no succh thing as rust converrter its just going to come back
.....an Addams Family castoff.....??
That chemical might have sealed the rust but it will continue to corrode the metal.

Fluid film , I put that shit on everything .
Rubberized coatings will rust out your body....
You don't even use a mask and rubber gloves?
NO UNDERCOATING 👎 👎 that's going to eat away your frame
Do yourself a favor throw away that bottle jack never get under it like that
Dangerous? Recall ?
That actually doesn't look half bad. I saw this falcon one time that had a major thick undercoating, 60 years later all the fender wells are rusted out and there was a hole in the floor pan. No guarantees I guess in life.

1 year and rust will come again in the worst way
