    Gotta love 3 non-Europeans talking about the EU. I don't want a European super-state either, but my god, the EU is being scapegoated for every damn issue, even though the national governments hold all the power within it. It's just too convenient.

    • @jackglasper5860
      @jackglasper5860 5 років тому +45

      As a Brit I couldn’t agree more the incompetent politicians here are now blaming the EU for all the problems they have created like the cowards they are. Like Peterson and Shapiro here they make up a version of the EU that doesn’t exist because they don’t seem to understand how it works. The member states decide all there isn’t a central EU government.

    • @matthiasm4299
      @matthiasm4299 5 років тому +4

      @tehanomander I agree that this perceived distance is a major issue for the EU, that needs to be addressed through reform. However, it shouldn't obscure the fact that our national governments sit on the Council of the EU and make the major decisions. So it's really the same people that make decisions on the national level and on the EU level (EU parliament is much less powerful). I think this is sometimes deliberately misrepresented by governments trying to run from their responsibilities.
      I'm hardly an EU cheerleader, but we desperately need mechanisms to foster common solutions in Europe (my home country borders 8 other countries, you can't run from that reality). Should these mechanisms be improved and be brought closer to the people? Sure. But we do need them.

    • @matthiasm4299
      @matthiasm4299 5 років тому +2

      @tehanomander Fundamentally, what I'm saying is that the EU is what member states make of it. It's not some foreign, unelected entity. It's always going to be as good or bad / accountable as its members. Those horrible new EU regulations? Chances are your government signed off on them.
      I agree that more centralization is too often proposed as a solution, but these proposals come from the member states.
      If you agree that we need mechanisms to create common solutions in some areas, then I'm afraid you can't have one in which one minority group can unilaterally vote everyone out of office. (even though they might be disadvantaged by the policies)

    • @matthiasm4299
      @matthiasm4299 5 років тому

      @tehanomander And the German taxpayer would ask why he should pay for Greek debts.... Yes, I'm afraid member states won't make everyone happy when they reach decisions. (of course, Greece shouldn't have been in the Euro in the first place, but that's another issue)
      If voters across Europe want EU authority in less areas, they can vote for parties that stand for this. (and people do!)

    • @matthiasm4299
      @matthiasm4299 5 років тому +1

      @tehanomander The Greek crisis was about Greece (the state, not private citizens) not being able to refinance its debts and being on the edge of bankruptcy. So the Greeks needed loans from other EU countries, chiefly Germany, which they got in exchange for painful structural reforms. Under the ESM, German taxpayers are absolutely liable in case of a Greek default. Would you like to give loans to someone who's nearly bankrupt? I'm not saying Germany came up with the right solution, but blame them for it, not "the EU" as a concept. As I said, the EU is only as good as its member states.
      As far as Salvini is concerned, well he did manage to cut off immigration from across the Mediterranean, which surely was one of his main concerns. You just can't act completely fiscally irresponsible, because other EU countries will be liable should you go bankrupt. That's hardly authoritarian, that's just common sense.
      And in order to roll back EU authority, you need a majority on your side, which you don't have (of course you can leave like the UK). And that's not the EU's fault.

      The immigrants from poland, lithuania, sweden are no big problem. All they do is provide cheap services for the upper middle class and push the wages down and cost of living up for the lower middle class and working class.
      The second generation of these immigrants are perfectly integrated into society, and most oftenly they are even given Norwegian names from their parents.
      The problem is the people from muslim countris.. 25 000 Are coming every year, and the number is rising. A big number for a country of 5 million.
      They are heavy over-users of social services and for every generation they get MORE violent, criminal and extremist in their muslim faith.. a faith that is very alien to our way of life to begin with. They get a lot of kids, while Norwegian women has more or less stopped having any.

      @Sam the Prophet no offense but i have to think about Monthy Phyton's life of Brian when it comes to brexit.
      "What have the Romans done for us?"
      But in all honesty, i think it's sad that you leave and Farage has lied to you because he made a profit from the referendum. He had shorts on the pound. He is a broker, so he lied to you for bis own profits. He spent more time on BBC newsnight than in the EU parliament, even though he had the responsibility for a resort.

    • @arvedludwig3584

      @Sam the Prophet apart from free movement you can say that the costs for agencies, that are currently under EU administration, are saved. You have special VAT tax and the benefit of the single market. This will eventually be missed out.
      The US will put you under pressure to agree to a deal that will benefit their companies. They don't want protective laws which were established by the EU (i.e. consumer protection). You can't sue your country if they act against you.
      You will miss out a lot and don't fall for the lie of national sovereignty. The amount of refugees your country has picked up is lower than those of others, yet Britain can't deal with them. Something must be wrong within your country and the brexit won't fix that. Maybe it will get worse with companies pulling out their businesses to stay competitive. Japanese manufacturers will pull out eventually since they have a trade agreement with the EU and they won't do that again with Britain.
      The Brexit won't fuck up Britain alone. The whole economy of Europe will have some of that but on a much smaller scale than yours.
      One last thing, what do you mean with 'absorb by the EU'?

    • @arvedludwig3584

      If you think you will be stronger after that, then you haven't understand global politics. After all that mess who wants to make commitments with your country about some trade deal.
      You know that post-brexit Britain will have a trade hole of £135 billion? No? Now you know and i bet they will do something to find a replacement. How can they do that?? I think tax might be the next best thing.

    All I said in my class is I like the polish people very much, I love, appreciate and respect their culture, history, ancestry, character and identity but do not want Iceland to become immediately/gradually polish because mass immigration leading to the natives of Iceland societally, nationally, demographically, culturally, representationally change.
    Small, only needed (last resort), controlled, vetted immigration is acceptable to me.

      I'm a working class English man and when Poland joined the EU we had tens of thousands come over who were uneducated and they immediately took over the building trade undercutting English workers.
      This negatively affected the working class greatly but at least they worked.
      Then about a decade ago the Romanians joined and you had petty crime explode because of all the gypsies. I honestly think they were the reason why Brexit happened because we realised this will never end.
      The EU seeks more and more control by engulfing more countries regardless of wealth or culture and every new country that joins their poor are able to come to England and take the jobs and housing of my fellow working class English people.
      Keep your culture and identify it's beautiful. London is unrecognisable from my childhood and I would not live there if you paid me.

      @@siegfrieds9349 I'm guessing you're alluding to the idea that the polish work hard and the English are just lazy.
      Our fathers and grandfather's worked hard to get workers rights such as a hour break, holiday and sick time and a basic minimum wage.
      The polish people could earn 4 or 5 times a month more over here working in the building trade then what they would have earned back in Poland. So they gave up all their rights as a worker in England to standout against English workers and greedy foremans and building companies started favouring the polish over us Brits.
      I can sympathize with the polish because if there was a foreign country where I could earn 4 or 5 times what I would earn in my native country I would go there and work without breaks or any other benefits afforded to the native population.
      So as English should we regress our rights just to keep up with a foreign workforce? This is in fact what the EU globalist want to happen.
      if you do have these views that English builders are lazy please go to work on a building site in England as a labourer and if you still have these views afterwards maybe they'll be more validated then.

    They end up forcing their things into the country.
    Now Country A looks like X,Y, and Z.
    And this happens with countries B, C, D ....
    If I go on holiday to say Thailand I want to go to see what it's like and it's culture, aesthetics etc.
    At this rate ALL countries will just be the same which to be honest won't happen as fights will break out with all these races etc and people will naturally separate again which is why we have countries in the first place!!!

Since then people will just get worried and suspicious over time, hating the immigrants themselves instead of the government or the system and its inability to handle the situation. Only then, chaos and "anarchy" will break out. As a citizen of an EU country, I can say this is where we are heading, if we cannot change the current situation, leaving both sides happy, that is.

      The problem of people caring more about their nations than the EU (which is not a problem, in Spain, Germany or Italy people do it at a regional level) is useless in their argument if they then say the EU is too centralized. The EU is the lest centralized state in the world, and all EU nations are completely sovereign if not for the fact that they have respect a set of rules they decided in the first place (Nato also imposes a sets of rules to be respected by all members and so does the UN or the EU). Maybe the problem is the opposite, the EU is not centralized enough.

      1. I did not say that the EU is the most decentralized UNION, I said it is the most decentralized STATE. For you to tell me that the EU is the most centralized union, just shows your ignorance. WTF is a Union? Union is not a political science term. You did not read or understand my comment properly (maybe my fault, maybe yours), and your clearly ignorant on the subject (which is weird since you seem to be very sure on the matter, and I guess I am stupid for answering).
      2. Sovereign in name only? Just last mont, Italy and France started squabbling about migration and the yellow jackets, now France called for their diplomat to go back to France. Are you telling me the two different nations are not sovereign?
      3.No EU member state can be forced to follow any of the EU laws. Outside of the fact that the laws are decided by EU citizens (i.e us) voted parliament the laws still don't have to be followed. If Poland does not respect the EU laws on freedom of press (and it isn't) the EU cannot and does not have anyway to enforce this (because Poland is a sovereign nation) instead much of the rest of Europe agreed to sanctions on Poland (Not all nations put up this sanctions as it cannot be enforced).
      THE EU HAS COMPLETELY DISMANTLED ANY PROTECTIONIST POLICIES (subsidies, Tariffs, Quotas) AND BORDERS BETWEEN MEMBER NATIONS, AND WE ARE COLLECTIVELY GIVEN THE ABILITY TO VOTE A GOVERNMENT (THE EU PARLIAMENT) THAT CAN STAND UP TO ANYOtHER SUPERPOWER ON EARTH.

      @Sench The end goal for some is federalization and not homogenization per se. How do propose to impose the standardization and regulation of the common market without the unified governing body? And you are forgetting that the European commission has only the power over certain democratically predetermined fields and it is not this authoritarian power that dictates the countries. In addition commissioners are appointed by member states parliament and each member state appoints only one commissioner. Bureaucracy is very much needed if you are dealing with 500 mil people and 28 countries with countless cultural backgrounds and many different languages. I don't think there is any sovereignty lost any of this processes because all internal matters are still determined by each individual member state.
      You are saying that economic growth is not important? What are you on about. If your GDP growth is falling for two consecutive quarters you are officially in a recession. Immigrants come to work, refugees normally don't but I don't think you understand the difference. And what is my ruling party?
      As I said before EU is a complicated entity with countless interest groups and opinions. And you cannot dumb it down to this ridiculous degree and still make a valid point about it.

      You seem to be implying that your view is shared among all Norwegians. If you deny that then I would really ask myself what the point is of even mentioning your origins in the first place.
      You should know that any kind of generalizing makes you look like a tool. And you manage to generalize 2 different parties in 1 sentence.
      I'll try to make this even more clear to you, so I'm sure you understand;
      Just because you aren't afraid of saying things doesn't mean others aren't.
      Just because you are from Norway doesn't allow you to imply that every Norwegian thinks this way.
      Referring to the USA and apparently implying the entirity of the USA thinks this way as a unit because 2 Americans have a specific opinion on a specific subject is dumb.
      Your opinion isn't shared among everyone.
      I hope you understand now why your "I'm from Norway" argument has 0 value.

      @@sveinunglidsheim5828 I agree JP and Ben are generalizing as well. The thing is, in my country at least (Belgium), we've entered the "saving regime" times. Suddenly everybody has to hand in even more than what it used to be. And yet, somehow at the same time our government decided to start cutting funds of healthcare and education. THE PILLARS OF ANY SOMEWHAT SOCIALIST DEMOCRACY. I no longer see the point of paying half of my earnings to an entity that is seemingly incapable of doing the bare minimum.
      I repeat, healthcare and education are the pillars of any socialist democracy, and there should NEVER be any cuts of funding in those zones. It blows my mind. And it disgusts me. Our goverment quite literally decided to drop families and people who became dependant on getting their meds paid by our system. Now those families have to find a way to make 10.000 euros more in a year somehow someway, and if they don't, they'll just slowly die to whatever crippling long-lasting diseases they have.
      I see we are somewhat of the same mindset, I just didn't like how you formed your original comment.
      I know my rant of cutting funds of education and healthcare are not really related, but it popped in my head so I had to write it out.
      You must also realize whilst this is happening, there are THOUSANDS of abusers of our system. Because our government hasn't made it bulletproof. Basically all you need is a friendly doc and you're handicapped. Sponsored by the state for the rest of your life. I know this is true, because I meet these people on the daily. There's nothing wrong with them, but they got a document saying they're handicapped. They contribute nothing, they leech and force our system to give up on the people who REALLY need help.
      It's a bubble that WILL burst eventually.
      And then I haven't even started about our pensions which is honestly just depressing to think about. I will most likely - if I stay in Belgium - be working until I'm 75 or older. Because of poor decision-making and spending by previous and current government. Why does my generation have to pay for years and years of awfull decisionmaking and politics?
      On top of that we see the trend continueing. Quite depressing. This isn't anything pushed by EU, just to be clear, these are our own politicians who aren't invested into helping people and saving the entire social system, they care more about getting the right job and filling their wallets whilst the average Joe pays the price.

    whilst the EU is not without its problems, I think they have misdiagnosed the EUs problems. The nations that make up the EU have plenty of autonomy, and it is most definitely heterogeneous in nature. there is some areas where homogeneity is called for, but this trade off has promoted prosperity and presided over western Ueropes longest span of peace in millenia

    • @flatlineproduction1

      The nation states do not have plenty of autonomy. Each member state elects a MEP which must declare an oath towards the EU over its own nation-state and they can only advise over regulations. But truly all regulations and laws comes from the EU commission which is a unelected unaccountable body.
      Also, when you talk about peace and prosperity. The last 100 years all the wars have been started by Germany. Germany has the most control of the EU which I'm sure you can understand gives them what they have always seeked. Power.
