Necco the Inca dove makes his "no hope" call

  • This is Necco, our cuddly, feisty pet Inca dove, making the "no hope" call this species is known for. He's the ultimate rescue bird; in 2012 a family in Austin incubated his egg and raised him. We adopted him at about four weeks old and took him back to Dallas, where Incas are very uncommon, so he has never seen another dove of his own species. But he still makes the call, thankfully only for brief periods throughout the day or we'd be crazy by now!

      When I first had Necco and showed him to my mom, he was sitting in my hand, and he fluffed out to the point where my mom, with a note of concern in her voice, asked, “how much fatter is he going to GET?” Like he might explode... 😂😂😂

      That is wonderful to hear! Necco passed away last year, right before his tenth birthday. He lived a long and happy like. Cheers to you for taking care of birds that need help, and especially little Inca doves. Life is very quiet without Necco, we miss him. But now we can travel and leave the house more, so we're going to wait until we have time to devote to another bird before we adopt another one. Love and best wishes from New Mexico! If you're taking care of any birds right now, please give them a cuddle for me.

    This is going to sound funny, but when I was small my mom would always tell me that they were saying, "feo tú" which transaltes to "you're ugly." I hear them every day here in Michoacán México and since I always have a barrel full with water to water my plants, about 20 come to drink water every day.

    I have a rescued Inca named Squeaky. I found him when he was about a week old after he fell out of a high nest that I couldn't get access to. He also had an injured leg and limps a bit, but he does ok with it. I decided to see if I could raise him up and hoped his leg would get better, but his injury prevents him from having complete mobility. He's also strongly bonded with me now too, so there's that. I quickly learned a lot about how to raise birds online and now he has a flock of diamond dove buddies that I bought as company for him. Luckily, I'm semi-retired and work for myself, but I quickly learned that keeping a baby bird alive and happy means that any social life and sleep patterns you had will go to hell for a couple of weeks. It's definitely not something to take lightly!
    Since Incas are slightly biggest than diamonds, he rules the flock, but outside of the odd squab squabbles everyone gets along fairly well. He also does the patented Inca call, but his diamond relatives drown him out and are a lot more talkative. When people call my house, the uninitiated usually ask me what the jungle noises are in the background. those tiny bird bodies can sure crank up the volume!
    I was wondering if the 2 species could cross into a FrankenDiamondInca, but they must be too far apart genetically to make it happen. At least Squeak is happy to give it a shot and his diamond GF, Bishi, is always up for some action! I did call Game and Fish later on and explained the situation, but they said that unless there were problems (and there never were) I should just go ahead and keep the band together. Now I am the dove whisperer...

      HOW EXCELLENT!! How exciting to find another person with a bonded Inca dove! Necco is currently perched on my head, giving me what feels like a hair weave. He was too feisty to live at the rehabilitation aviary, the first thing he did was fly over to a cuckoo to try and mate with it. After a few days even ducks were running from him, and that’s how he ended up back with us. He’s the cuddliest bird we’ve ever had by far, it’s ridiculous how close he likes to get. His favorite place to sit is in my husband’s collar, he’s just along for the ride.
      Hilarious that Squeaky has a GF! Necco likes shoes, that’s all I’m going to say. I’d love to see a photo or video of him sometime, am so glad you shared your story. Little Squeaky!

    • @PabloVaughan
      @PabloVaughan 6 років тому +3

      Yeah, when Incas are pissed off or in the mood, not a whole lot will dissuade them! They can be so sweet and then very aggro on anything or anyone nearby who does not get with the program. And once their motors get going, they can be quite the blabberbeaks! Necco looks like quite to sweetie and it's awesome that he has 'accepted' your husband as part of the flock that is under his protection. I love watching their orange irises wildly contract and expand when they get excited about something. The tail flapping thing is another fun thing and I can get Squeak to flare it by saying something like 'Look at the tail on that dove!' The more loudly I say it, the more he flips it around! Cool birds! If you ever decide to get into any other birds, diamonds can work well with Incas, but Necco might initially be very territorial at first.
      Great talking with you and I'll check out some of your other vids, like the one I can see on my sidebar (Necco the cuddly Inca Dove). Cheers!

    They're also called Mourning Doves, but that isn't a 'No Hope' or mourning call at all! It's cute and cool 'Cooo Cooo!" Or "Hoooo Hooo!" Wow. And it's so high-pitched too. Awesome, wholesome and cute!

      He’s smaller than a mourning dove, only about half the size. I had a beloved mourning dove when I first got Necco and had to keep them separated or he would get pecked like crazy. I think Necco’s call is cheerful too, he sings every morning for long stretches at a time 😍

    It's not a no hope. I'll give you a reading from the Florentine Codex:
    There are some little birds in this land that are called cocohtli, and all the spaniards call them little doves; they are not as big as the ones found in Castille, but they share their color; they are smallish, with blonde wings; they look smooth, with colorful and small feet; they are called cocohtli because when they sing they say coco, coco; they eat herb seeds and chia; they only marry once, and when their partner dies, they are always weeping alone, saying: coco, coco. It is said that their meat helps against sadness. Jealous women are fed these birds to help forget their jealousy, and also to the men.

I believe it - surviving and settling out there must have been a total kick in the pants.

    Loved your vídeo! Also, do you know what they eat, I rescued one but I don't know what they eat

      Thank you! Black oil sunflower seeds are very good, high nutrition and most doves LOVE them. Necco eats sunflower hearts, finch seed mix fromPet Supplies Plus, and Zupreem pellets. Also, spray millet is a favorite. Good luck with your little rescue guy! If you have questions about care, rehab, release etc, check out PigeonTalk.biz online, they’re a huge help. I’m rooting for the little guy, glad you reached out :)

    Has he find his mate yet? I hope he did.

      Yes, because he's imprinted on people, I'm his mate. It's not ideal, but it works for him. I try to spend as much time with him as I can so he doesn't get lonely. He still sings all day long, and he'll be nine this year :)

    I found an Inca dove and bought finch food and a peanut suet cake. I'll wait a few days to see if it eats that? What do you feed yours? Thank you

      Finch food is great. By the way, if he's a baby or an injured adult he should be taken to a local rehab center. If it's a baby & bonds to you you'll have a lifelong friend but a very confused bird; Necco thinks he's a person! I had to get a permit from the state (TX) to even keep him, he's considered an educational bird now and spends most of his time at TWRC in Houston. Good luck with the little guy.

    Why is Necco cooing his "no hope" call? Is he upset, for some reason?

    • @TrishAnderson
      @TrishAnderson  7 років тому +1

      No, it's just his song, he sings it when he's happy. His territory and excited calls sound like he's scolding us.

    Why does Necco make that call? Is it that he's upset about something? I don't get it...

      James Shaler
      He sings like this when he’s happy, which is nearly all day now that he’s grown up. I read somewhere that the early settlers of the west were the ones to make the “No Hope” comparison. Makes sense to me, it must have been a grueling journey for the settlers. Hearing that call all day... “no hope, no hope” must’ve been a real kick in the pants.

    What does that call mean?
    Hes calling for a gf?

    • @TrishAnderson
      @TrishAnderson  3 роки тому

      It’s his territory song, he sings every morning and throughout the day. Sometimes while one of us is holding him he’ll start singing. It’s especially funny when he sits on my shoulder and starts singing right in my ear, it’s pretty loud. I don’t mind, though. In spite of his song sounding like “no hope”, it is actually a song of contentment.
