I never found them scary or creepy. Only cute and derpy. I love their call too, it's a combo of gentle and haunting.
Right they're one of the cutest birds I've seen ☺🥰
Can someone explain this to me what is this?
@@brightmacsworld8353 Explain what precisely? The cute and derpy? Or the sound of their call? Not trying to start anything, I'll try to answer honestly.
They're so goofy-looking 😂 their eyes remind me of the plushes of my childhood: wonky but in a cartoonish way
I can’t even imagine how important conserving trees must be for these birds considering their nesting habits.
Right? Some other birds make do with wholes in the ground or most commonly, man made structures. Doesn't seem like those are options for these guys tho
Except they are an option for them
Cause when they are forced to do it , they will do it.
“The idea is that predators will get so weirded out by them…” yeah, I can see how that could happen

Urutau conhecido também como mãe da lua.
Their nesting strategy can be described as…. Minimalist 😂😂
They literally lay their eggs on a branch with no nest 😂😂
Eggs lookin like tree bark, so that answered my question on how the egg survives long enough.
Now imagine hatching and seeing an immediate 15 ft drop and not squealing and flapping and dying. Mf born stiff
"That's a nice dead tree, might as well shove a egg or two there."

SAMEE Its midnight here, and I am trying SO hard not to wake my family rn XD
Potoos (family Nyctibiidae) are a group of birds related to the nightjars and frogmouths.
They are sometimes called poor-me-ones, after their haunting calls.
The family Nyctibiidae was formerly included with the nightjars in the order Caprimulgiformes but is now placed in a separate order, Nyctibiiformes.
There are seven species in two genera in tropical Central and South America.
Fossil evidence indicates that they also inhabited Europe during the Paleogene.
Potoos are nocturnal insectivores that lack the bristles around the mouth found in the true nightjars.
They hunt from a perch like a shrike or flycatcher.
During the day they perch upright on tree stumps, camouflaged to look like part of the stump.
The single spotted egg is laid directly on the top of a stump.
In Argentina and Bolivia, they are known as kakuy or cacuy - from Quechua meaning 'to remain'.
In Brazil, they are called urutau - from Guaraní guyra 'bird' and tau 'ghost'.
I heard the "wuuuuuu huuuu huu huuu" sound really early in the morning, I knew it was a bird, but I never saw it, now I know why, they look just like a branch
Here in Brazil they are called Urutau = ghost bird or Mãe da Lua = mother of the moon. Legend says that the bird is actually the daughter of a tribe chieftain who was exiled because of a forbidden love. In the jungle she cried every night in search of her love. A witch saw her suffering and turned her into the bird so that in her singing she could still cry.
It's gonna have to be 'urutaú' forever for me, Guaraní is such a beautiful language. 'Kakuy' is also pretty nice. 'Mãe da Lua' is lovely. 'Potoo' just sucks lol.
Saludos desde Argentina 😆
and then in english it's "potoo" 🤣 americans are a joke

as a bolivian I adore seeing these little boogers when visiting my family in Santa Cruz. Here we call it a Guajojo, which is based on their call: "waaah hoo hoo". We have a leyend about the bird being a cursed woman calling out for her lost love, as well as one classy song from the 50s: El Guajojó, by Gladys Moreno.
