- Here it is! Hey everyone, hope you are all doing well! I am incredibly excited to share this with you all as I tried to make this as big of a love letter to Sonic Adventure 2 and its music as I could. Enjoy the ride as we go deep into the music development of Sonic Adventure 2 checking out its vocal themes, prototype tracks, musical influences, composers thought processes, and behind-the-scenes work, and composer interviews. Sonic Adventure 2 is my all time favorite video game and its music is my all time favorite OST. I hope you enjoy, are able to learn a few things and see why Sonic Adventure 2's music was THE sound of an era :)))

Hey everyone really hope you enjoyed the video! This was a love letter to Sonic Adventure 2 as its my favorite video game soundtrack of all time and I wanted to celebrate its 20th anniversary this year!
I had a quick clarification I wanted to make on Jon Batiste, as I was mistaken it is in fact not Jon Batiste who did the vibraphone in Fly In the Freedom but Jean Baptiste! The printing of the album had some misspellings in the track accreditation (look at Koji Orita for Death Chamber as an example, which they spelled wrong in the credits making it a Koji Orhita), so I assumed something similar was happening since when I looked up Jean Baptiste legit nothing came up and Jon Batiste has also been very loud for his love of sonic so I assumed it was a misspelling on the printing. I appreciate this getting pointed out in the comments since I want to make this as accurate of a developmental archive as possible!

I showed Live & Learn to one of my friends once who never played a sonic game in his entire life before. He got chills just from listening to the song and it made me realise for the 1 millionth time how much impact this song has. SA2 is will forever be my favorite sonic game and the OST alone would already justify that

@@slayeromair Unfortunately true, I wish Shiro Maekawa would come back to the series to return as the writer of Sonic games, Ian Flynn has made Sonic better than he was before for sure, but to me, it's still missing the oomph that the Adventure games had with every line. In the Adventure games, the lines were all so, SO memorable, like the "Faker!" scene, or the ending scene, and many more.

As rough as that game is, I cannot deny that that soundtrack is one of the best in the franchise. I freaking love the main themes in that game. Shadows theme is about his life and how the events of Maria's death and service as an agent of GUN shaped his life. Silvers is about his endless optimism and his hope for a brighter future. Sonics can really be interpreted several ways. In the context of the game, it's about how Sonic takes action in even the worst of situations and always looks forward. In real world context, it's about Sega putting their foot down and saying that they are here to stay and them wanting 06 to be an event. You can really tell 06 had high hopes but just didn't have the time to really come to fruition
This would have been a good finale to the series.
"Sayonara Shadow The Hedgehog" That could have been the final line in Sonic history.
Something I really love is how the title screen plays a small section of Live and Learn. The menu plays an amazing upbeat loop, and the stage select plays something a bit more sedate. But still awesome.
So you hear this one riff over and over and over again as you play the game and don’t think much of it.
But then the final boss happens and it’s the biggest damn climax ever. The menu music is a song, and it’s fucking awesome!

The characters having music stylings attached to them was one of several things that his series should've never abandoned. This was truly unique.
Sonic music hasn't been the same since Kumatani left after Sonic Colours. I never really knew much about her until these videos, and now I realize she is responsible for all of my favourite sonic tracks. Not only in these games, but in Unleashed we have her to thank for the best Werehog and hub tracks. I love Senoue, but I hope we can give her more credit too. Amazing video, Eldarin! I'd love to see these types of videos for 06 and Unleashed, as they have my favorite Sonic OSTs :D

You made me tear up again, I always wanted someone to recognize that it's not only that live and learn is a great song, but that it's impact is just that big because of the way the game hypes it, you've been hearing it through the game, and when it's in full display I can't help but cry.

It's been a long time since I used to record the SA2 music from my TV to a cassette tape using a microphone. This game, and this soundtrack, has always been something special.

I recently beat the final story of sa2 for the first time and I have to say sa2 is a good game and I loved the music. Rouges music reminds me of sonic unleashed maybe because sonic unleashed has alot of smooth jazz.

Amazing video, and great timing! I recently found the entire OST on spotify. I always loved it as a kid, and after re-listening to it, I have really fallen in love with all of the tracks for Shadow's levels. 'The Supernatural' gives me pure Death grips vibes. I also just love the pure unapologetic cheese from Knuckles' tracks lmao

I think that what made Sonic Adventure personally really hit home for me back in 2001 was the finality of it.
I had grown up playing Sonic on the Mega Drive all the way back when the first games were new and what made Sonic Adventure really something else was how the series had now grown up with me. those young kids that originally played the first games were now teenagers and were ready for a tone that was a little more serious.
With Sonic Adventure, I feel that is exactly what we got. We have a plot that was way more epic in scale than anything that had come before it. The stakes were raised to the max and while the tone of the old games was still present, this time we had a plot featuring both death, grim fates, and a doomsday clock ticking.
While Doctor Robotnik had always been out to get Sonic in a menacing way, this time he was actually ready to go through with it in a very serious way.
The whole thing building up to that amazing finale where Sonic and Shadow is teaming up, in a last desperate attempt to stop the space colony from crashing into the earth was just such a perfect climax.
And that somber ending where everyone is just reminiscing and saying their final goodbye.
Back in the day, it felt to me like this was also the cast saying their goodbyes to the fans that had been playing their games over the decade as we already knew that this would be the last true Sonic game that was meant to not just be a game but be a console seller. The last big hurrah for Sega.
Back when I played it, I truly did think that this was the end for the franchise so this ending really hit hard and almost brought me to tears.
I loved the Sonic games and even if there were still gonna be more in the future, it would never be Sonic as I knew him.
After that, there really wasn't any real continuity lest to the series. Just a bunch of strange attempts at reboots, gimmicks, and toned-down basic stories. The series these days have pretty much become so self-aware of its own meta status that is constantly just laughing at itself that I doubt we'll ever see another true attempt at a grand scale Sonic game with an engaging story.
The people that grew up with the original games are old now and I doubt the tone of the games over the last 2 decades that any kids will be engaged enough in Sonic to care either.
The ending to Sonic Adventure 2 is probably the most memorable video game ending to me personally because it really hit on two levels. The wrap-up to the story but also something bigger.
SA2 was already my favorite Sonic game, but damn, I appreciate it even more after watching this

Escape from the city, live and learn, keys the ruin, won’t stop just go, supporting me, Bright Sound, kick the rocks, rumbling highway are some of my favorite sonic songs in the series it has like no bad songs imo even omochao theme is really good too “advertise prof. I'd say that of all the games I've ever played, SA2B's soundtrack is probably the one that made me appreciate video game music as a whole. Sure, I've played games with amazing soundtracks that I still remember by heart before it, but this was the first game I played where listening to the soundtrack was readily available to me thanks to its sound test that didn't require a cheat code to unlock. I listened to it so much, that the sound of Shadow saying 'I'm not interested' is forever ingrained into my head. All the character themes, Knuckles' raps, Live and Learn, City Escape; I'd play them over and over and over again so much, that I remembered all of their lyrics through the game alone. Well, except for Fly Into Freedom. Being a young boy, I always thought the theme was too sexy for me when I was a child, so I skipped it. When I told my cousin that years later, he said 'I parental controlled myself', which is a funny way of thinking about things.
I'm sorry if it feels like a rant; I just really love and adore this games soundtrack. Whenever I hear any theme from it play in any other game, I get so giddy and excited. Seriously, I got such a big smile on my face when I played Team Sonic Racing as Rouge, got her ultimate, and heard 'I'm A Spy' playing in my head, since it had been years since I last heard it.
Also, I have to thank you Eldarin for finally telling me what they are saying in the Chao Lobby. Years of trying to decipher its nonsense only to learn that its sampled from the A-Team. I think it goes without saying that I would have never got that.

Totally agree that Tails’ music is some of the best crazy it was all a last minute thing. Not sure if I commented already...finally got to watch this start to finish and man it's so beautiful. I'm a huge sonic fan and this whole video was just so beautiful. These songs are my childhood. I lived and breathed this game, I had the songs burnt onto onto homemade CD that I demanded was always played in the car, I had drawings on my walls with the lyrics, I took PHOTOS of the game and my chao and my mum took me to Kmart to get them printed... I even got a photo printed onto a homemade T shirt that I wore til it fell apart... my mum crocheted me a chao plushie for my 8th birthday.... I love this game. It always makes me so happy seeing someone else that loves this game as deeply as I do.

rhythm and balance, the super natural and for true story all fall under neurofunk. this game is why neurofunk is my favorite genre of all time, thanks SA2 for my obsession with it :D. this soundtrack has been a massive part of my life and i always go back to it
Sonic Adventure 2 has one of the best video game soundtracks. The composers did their best for this game and I appreciate it. With all those different genres there's something for everyone to enjoy. Knuckles & Rouge have my favourite level themes. Even though I don't like rap very much the Knux raps fit with the music and as I said one sentence earlier they are one of my favourites from the game. E.G.G.M.A.N. is my favourite character theme from SA2. It really captures Eggman's character. Live and Learn is one of the best vocal tracks in the franchise and I literally have my eyes full of tears from happiness and nostalgia when I listen to the full version. If Sonic Adventure 2 was the last Sonic game ever produced then with both gameplay and music it would end on a high note.

I pretty much grew up on Hip-hop and R&B ( Rythem and Blues ) but as I got older, I got into more genres, such as jazz, house, electronica, drum n bass, punk, bossanova etc.
adventure 1 focused on the environment of the level. Adventure 2 focuses on the scenario of the level. If green forest was in adventure 1 it would have a bubbly tone with some rock. Green forest in adventure 2 is fast rock because you are literally running through a forest before it explodes, making the music and level more intense.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that they changed the Chao World lobby music between the original Dreamcast version and SA2:B. I prefer the original, personally. It's hard to find on UA-cam. Most people just do the SA2:B version.

@@Eldarin That's not surprising. It's pretty difficult to find, since most soundtracks on youtube default to the SA2:B music. I think there's a video comparing the differences between versions though, where you can hear the original music.
I prefer the original because I think it fits with the magical aesthetic the lobby has. The techno-sounding music fits the more mechanical SA1 race hub room, which looked very techno.
@@Prince_Cheddar that song is still there It was just swapped to the option to choose between the Chao karate and and Chao race and they put the sa1 music in the lobby in sa2b
Sonic Adventure 2 as a whole is easily the most well designed of all the Sonic games I've played. There's no screen crunch, automated sections are sparse and used appropriately, and going fast is rewarding due to a mixture of smart design with a great sense of rhythm that rarely loses flow, and the ranking system alongside a good variety of mission based challenges. It's a Sonic game, so it's not perfect. It is, however, the perfect Sonic game.
It really makes me sad that all the modern Sonic games just don't capture the same magic as the adventure games. Just so tired of the boost/2D being used and I really miss the other characters getting the spotlight to change up the gameplay. I really miss the Chao garden so much too

This new Sonic game looks like another boost game and I'm not all that excited about it.

Eldarin! Dude! You are just knocking it out of the park! I am so proud seeing you constantly improve! Your editing and composition is just getting better and better.
I also love the SA2 soundtrack as it feels like it has such an identity that it completely owns. SA1 is a fantastic soundtrack, but the rock influence of SA2 feels like it defines the game.
I love how you went into each character and the individual tracks of their stages. It was cool! I think that Sonic's music perfectly fits with the spirit of the character and the series as a whole, but I love how Rouge gets the jazzy bits or the more industrial feeling from Eggman's music. All the characters have music that suit them so well.
I mention this on like all of your videos, but I am so glad you gave some love to Fumie Kumatani! She is so incredible and I miss her music so much. She actually wrote the final track after Shadow dies and I think we can all say it's nothing short of iconic. The that music trails off as we see the ARK floating in orbit and then Live & Learn kicks in! It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it!
I will say that personally, I am not the biggest fan of Shadow's music in this game. It fits his character well, but it's just not something I personally vibe with. I find the lyrics of his songs to be quite incomprehensible. I know fans love "Supporting Me," but it has never been a song I particularly loved. I thought it just seemed like a so-so boss fight. I respect that people love it though, it's just not for me.
The "Adventure Era" or whatever you want to call it was iconic and (as you said) it defined Sonic for that time and I believe it still has.
SA2 is not my favorite Sonic game, but I do love it and the memories I have with it. But the music is absolutely top shelf stuff! Thanks for this incredible video. Your videos are always way past cool!

I too love both SA1&2's OST so much but SA2's is etched out a tad more for me as it just oozes personality and truly does define the game. Kumatani is AMAZING! Trust me we will be covering her much much more on this channel with the later OSTs like Secret Rings (one of my favs) she is a true gem in the industry that deserves much more recognition than what she gets currently. My favorite Sonic game is definitely Sonic Unleashed. That game is a masterpiece! But Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Adventure 1 and 2, and other Sonic games are totally up there for me too, but Unleashed just has that special spark.
@@CutBackDropTurn Ooooo Sonic Unleashed! A game with a killer soundtrack and presentation! I need to get my hands on actually playing that game, have yet to do it. It reminds me alot of the adventure games in terms of scope and I was suprised to see how open the levels were from my little time on project Unleashed. Level design in that game is awesome!
@@Eldarin - I hope you enjoy it! I personally cannot recommend the Wii/PS2 version, but the 360/PS3 version is my favorite game ever. Not just Sonic game, but my favorite game EVER. I think it really showed the pinnacle of a passionate, high budget Sonic game. I feel we never really got to that peak again, sadly. It's got problems to be sure, but it's great! One of those flawed masterpieces in my eyes.
The soundtrack is so amazing and I love how it's influenced by real world cultures. Kumatani did the town themes and it slaps! Apotos Day is one of the best songs in the history of the series.
I'm looking forward to you eventually covering this game!

Ending the adventure games with a bang, in my opinion your best video and one of the best videos i ever seen, i always loved SA2 soundtrack and funny enough it was what made me a Sonic Fan now, listening to Live and Learn on youtube made somenthing inside of me open that i never felted before, i started to feel curious about the game and then playing it and 100% on my xbox 360 (rip he red ringed) and this game become my favorite game of all times, thanks to Live and Learn i become a Sonic Fan and joined this amazing franchise, and discovered my favorite game of all time, the composers all did a fantastic job just as you Eldarin. This is a great in depth video on this soundtrack! My personal favorite from this game is highway in the sky (final rush) metal harbor is probably my second or third day. This ost is also as a whole my favorite sonic pet by miles

@@Eldarin No worries about the late response man, and hey I'm happy you bothered to comment. You won't be able to answer a lot of stuff like this in the future when your channel gains more traction. My favorite video game ost currently would have to be Xenoblade Chronicles. My favorite *Sonic* ost would be Sonic Colors Wii. With the amount of variety the ost covers, you'd think it'd be stretched thin but that's far from the case. From the pure beauty of life Planet Wisp conveys, to the adrenaline pumping rush and sense of finality Terminal Velocity delivers. I absolutely love it all(yes even Speak With Your Heart I swear it get's good after 15 seconds lmao). Your videos actually give me some energy to continue writing my scripts for when I start my YT channel. It'll be a while before I get my equipment tho lol. I have no idea whether it's intentional or not, but "Let the speed mend it" from Secret Rings sounds much like a faster paced version of Throw it all away which I always found interesting
I think my personal favourites of this OST aside from the obvious tracks like Live and Learn are Supporting Me and Strategy, the former one especially. I don't know why but somehow neither of the other versions of it (despite their lyrics being more easy to understand) manage to replicate the same atmosphere. The one in Forces adds it's own flair with the connection to Infinite of course and while I like that one a lot too, I think SA2's is still my favourite. It's just such an amazing track
But anyways, amazing video! Is there a chance we can hope for a similar one about Sonic 06 sometime in the future? For all its infamity, a lot of people praise it's music and while it also is one of my personal favourite OSTs I feel like some of the Event tracks like "Just Smile" and "Parade: Past Memories" need some love

I agree with you on the Supporting Me front and its reuses in other games, while great songs it can't replicate its impact and atmosphere due to the song both lyrically and its setting being solely shaped for that fight in SA2. It means alot for the kind words, you can 100% bet on a 06 video (along with every mainline sonic game)'s music development in some aspect! Hope you enjoy the ride :))

The funniest part is that this OST is technically unfinished since the filenames reveal that every character was supposed to have their own cannons core-theme, but only the ones for Tails(Also plays for Eggman), Eggman(Doesn't play for him and instead the treasure hunters) and Sonic exist. People say that something unfinished can't be considered good, but...yeah, this is basically the ultimate counter to that statement.
Also, the vocal themes are indeed legendary. Though honestly, almost every vocal theme of that era of Sonic is legendary.
Hot take, I prefer the Generations version of "For True Story." Not because I can hear the lyrics better, but because the tone is more ominous and in the vinyl release, it has a conclusive end. It's just the isolated lyrics "Stars don't twinkle, and the moon doesn't shine" four times with an echoed gasping effect after the 2nd and 4th times they say it. To keep it from just being baron, they keep the percussion layer. It simultaneously makes it sound more badass and intimidating.
32:09 What's interesting is that two other of Knuckles' songs contain mild language; Kick the Rock contains the line "Yeah Rouge, she's sexy and smooth", but more interesting is the theme of Death Chamber, Deeper, as even if you played that stage, there's a good chance you never heard the line in question, even in passing; in fact, if you noticed how few lyrics there are, that's actually because the game uses a semi-instrumental version of the song; this version cuts out all of the lyrics depicting a conversation between Sonic and Knuckles because one of the lines has Sonic say "You're damn right, Knuckles", and while it makes sense to cut out the word damn when you're going for an E rating, it's kind of excessive to cut out most of the lyrics because of that one line (maybe they thought that was the only way to do so without it being distracting). It's also weird since they got away with two other instances of minor swearing, one of which using that same word, and got away with it, so I don't know if they didn't want to push their luck or what.
To be fair, I don't think you ever hear the damn from Unknown from M.E 2 in game. The only place I recall hearing it is in the Sound Test version. Don't know how they were allowed to get those Rouge lyrics in though.
