29:22 I had always headcannoned that Eggman built Carnival Night Zone for his entertainment. He would totally be the kind of person to threaten many lives, take advantage of the last of a nearly extinct species, and burn down a forest just to turn around and go play in his amusement park.
That is in fact, the entire plot of Sonic CD
But it was on angel island before him? How would he have had time to build all of it in like what? 12 hours? He just met knuckles in the island and his repairing the death egg. His badniks surely couldn't build all of it in that time too. Idk just my thoughts on it.
@@RoshiBro08 Sonic 3 happens some time after Sonic 2 but Robotnik met knuckles after his death egg crashed into angel island right after Sonic 2 so while sonic and tails haven't arrived yet, he built all of that

I didn't know that at the time, I've only played mania once and played the whole thing without knowing the drop dash was even a thing LMAO so im excited to replay it and see how it stacks up!

56:06 funfact: You can defeat the death ball boss really quickly by using the upside down gravity and spindashing at the flipped spiked cars. Doing that will launch them straight at the robot.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles is amazing. This time I don't have much to say as most of it is in the video. Everything this game has to offer is great. All three characters are great to play as, level design is very good and Special Stages aren't poorly made. The soundtrack is my favourite from the Classic games and still holds up to this day. The game has it's problems like Marble Garden (which has my favourite music in the game) not being suited for first-time players but is mostly fair to new players and well made for returning ones like Super Mario World. Since November 2019 we all know the prototype music (which was used in S&K Collection 22 years before it was discovered) and I personally like it more than what Jackson composed. Sega can easily port the game with prototype music (CNZ, ICZ, LBZ, Competition Menu etc.) to avoid problems with copyright yet they don't want free money. While playing Sonic Mania I sometimes felt bored. This never happened while playing S3&K - it's that entertaining! I even have an entire playthrough of S3&K (in S&K Collection) on my channel - that's how much I love it (no, I'm not self-promoting myself). This game easily gets an easy S+/S+ for me.
I've only played all main 16-bit and 8-bit Classic Sonic titles but I will play through 3D Blast, SA1, SA2 and Generations in the near future.
I 100% agree its crazy as while I am not a fan of Marble Garden I could definitely see why some people like it. I had a similar feeling with Mania but I'm curious how I am going to like it now that I've played all the classics its remixing. I saw your longplay its funny you mention that because for me at least, I finished Sonic 3 in one sitting, and the same with S&K those games are just so replayable. I highly recommend SA1&2.SEGA is full of dunces, Whitehead gave them an easy way to port 3K and they passed it up, along with Whitehead's team eventually getting the boot, it's a disgrace. I feel you'll really SA1 especially since to me at least, its the perfect 2D to 3D transition for Sonic's gameplay while SA2 changes it up a bit (not in a bad way though just the design shift changes). I'm looking to play 3D blast as I haven't played that or any of the games in the 2008-2016 era. Thanks for watching the videos always enjoy your take on the games :)

I didn't notice Sonic's run in 3&K had a third phase with his spikes stretched out
Cuz I always thought of the Arms behind him and his body leaning forward as the 3rd phase
Fun fact: The reason for Sonic's new move being called the W Spin Attack in Japan is that they actually use W to represent double, so it's really called the Double Spin Attack, which makes sense considering that it basically is a second Spin Attack. Don't understand why they called it the Insta-shield internationally when it's pretty useless as a form of defense and wasn't made to be that, but a form of offence; I understand that the Japanese name doesn't make sense outside of Japan (or maybe other East Asian countries, but I don't know if that's true), but you could just call it the Double Spin Attack, that's what the original name means after all.
Actually, the insta-shield was meant to be used as a shield as well. Due to a programming error, it does not deflect projectiles like it was supposed to in the final game.
Because it gives you a few frames of invincibility aka insta-shield and double spin dash makes serious sense because you do it from a jump including a standing jump so theres no first spin dash for it to be the double of
The mural is a foreshadow of doomsday and eggmans mech as perfect chaos does not use the master emerald to achieve it's super form.
Ah yes, Sonic 3. The game that released in my birthday and became my favorite Sonic game. This game is just perfect.

A really subtle detail, the death egg zone bg dose NOT have any kind of paralax scroll or any scrolling at all, showing it's Sheer size, no matter where you go, it isn't moving

YES! I still feel theres alot left on the table with the mythos of Angel Island that was just dropped basically post-SA2. Would love to see a return and maybe instead of retreading Green Hill, we get a fully 3D Angel Island zone for a change!

i still recall the first time i played doomsday zone, while sweating, super engaged in the game, the music getting more and more intense, that was the moment i realized i was playing my fav sonic game, end one of my fav games ever. great review man loved it (also sonic 3 air is the def version of the game and you can't change my mind suhaushaushaus)

Sonic 3 & Knuckles blew my frickin' mind.
Getting into the game, I was afraid that my experience with S3K wouldn't live up to the high praises I heard, and oh boy was I glad to be wrong.
The sheer scope of this game astounded me. A built-in save system? 14 zones? Different shields? Different BGM's for each act? Bonus Stages? Chaos Emerald Hunt 2: Electric Boogaloo?

Just finished my Hyper Knuckles save and I'm working on Tails.
That’s awesome! I felt the same way first playing 3K especially the sonic 3 part I was kinda just whemled but after replaying a few months later for the video and was completely blown away. What did you think about the Knuckles story especially the final fight...I had no clue the mecha sonic fight at the end and it was so awesome and surprising!
@@Eldarin Before I watched the video it didn't occur to me that Knuckles's story actually occurred AFTER Sonic's. I thought it was just more or less just inserting Knuckles into Sonic's campaign with some changes to accommodate, which had me puzzled when it cut straight to a final boss fight in Sky Sanctuary. Now that I see it here, it makes sense with Angel Island already up in the air and stuff.
Aside from that, I enjoyed how Knuckles controlled, unless you drop me in Lava Reef Act 1. Many rings were dropped that day. I also timed-out a LOT more as Knuckles whereas I only timed-out twice as Sonic. I spent too much time climbing around looking for the giant rings. (Speaking of which I never knew the classic games had a time limit until this game)
As for the final boss fight with Mecha Sonic, I thought it was really interesting. I thought Mecha's gold palette was a fan-made sprite by Mark Haynes for that one scene in Super Mario Bros Z. In fact, when people associated the Doomsday theme with Mecha Sonic, I thought it was because of SMBZ's Mecha Sonic, not from the original in S3K. So yeah, fun surprise.

Excellent video! I’m glad you love S3K so much. It’s honestly my favorite game of all time, alongside Sonic Unleashed (360/PS3). I played this game when I was 4 and I am so lucky I did. Sonic was really on top of the world back then and I feel so fortunate to being around during that time.
This game is just incredible how this game really does combine the gameplay, music, and lore together almost perfectly.
I only wish Amy Rose could’ve been a part of this game in some capacity because I see her on the same level of importance as the 3 boys and Eggman. She was a character before Knuckles, so it makes sense.
Regardless, your extensive look felt like a great conversation with a friend about one of the greatest platformers ever!

I 100% agree, I would say although S3K is not my "favorite" game in the franchise per say, I can see objectively its the closest (if not IS) the "perfect" game in the franchise where just about everything feels like it was completely thought through, fleshed out and executed fully! I also wish we would've gotten a little bit of Amy in it too as it would've just added a tad more depth to the game even if she was just an unlockable character! I've never played SU so im incredibly excited to try it...looks fantastic (my biggest hurdle is finding out HOW im going to play it LOL) Thank you so much for watching!

Funny that. Sandopolis is the zone that comes to mind when I think of Sonic 3 & Knuckles as well.
E: I am 90% sure my S3&K kept screwing up. I only ever got the same boss as in Sonic and/or Tails which meant I was just off screen and the boss was just there till I timed out. I certainly do not remember the spike ball lines.
E2: But I do remember the Super Mecha Sonic fight... what?

If I recall correctly, “Mobius” is not canon. From the start, the games were apparently taking place somewhere on Earth, or at least a fictionalised version of Earth. The planet was never explicitly stated but that was the general assumption. The Mobius planet/name was all made up by the people working on the American cartoons in the '90s and doesn't factor into the main games really.
When I was a kid, I used to think the bitcrunched “Go!” sound effect in launch base was supposed to be the sound of power tools and whatnot that were being used to repair the death egg.

43:53 this was reuse in Sonic Mania for not make it really hard the Breathe because of the smoke from the Oil in Oil Ocean Zone from Sonic 2. and same in sonic 3 and Knuckles in Mania both Mania and Sonic 3 and Knuckles lead to Lava Reef Zone in Sonic Mania like in 3 and Knuckles.

Another great video dude! I genuinely cannot express how grateful I am to have such a high quality video play in the background as I work from home. First off, I can only imagine how long it took you to write this script and edit the video. Bravo! 👏🏽 I can’t believe you tackled both games at once. Listening to this review as well as the Sonic 1 & 2 videos made me realize what a critique actually is. Just because I don’t mind a gimmick or an annoying boss fight doesn’t take away from the fact that I have an issue with the game. Marble Garden Zone for instance, was pretty fun because I enjoy flying in games. However, that spinning top had a mind of its own and it was trivial having to come back for it. My only critique with this and the last video are you not displaying the multiplayer sections. It seems like your focusing on the single player experience which is fine, but I would like to know the entire product if possible. I wanted to hear your thoughts about the competition mode of Sonic 3. I wanted see some game play of Single Player Tails in Sonic 2. I know I’m asking for a lot, but it’s just food for thought. Hey there! Taking the time out to comment the feedback and everything really means alot to me and I genuinely appreciate it! The script for this was 11 pages at 7pt font (15,122 words in total)...so it took a while hahaha. The process of making this was crazy also as I got COVID, moved back for Winter break, etc etc so I was able to finish it while quarantined funny enough. I didn't display the multiplayer sections just because I didn't think anyone was interested in those but that's my mistake for assuming so I'll definitely work on that in the future..thank you for bringing that to my attention! I really liked the MP music in the 3K multiplayer also. Again thanks so much for the kind words and I hope you enjoy the videos :D

Some noteworthy things I wanted to add:
1) Big Arm is actually in Sonic's campaign as the final boss of Sonic 3 (not S3&K). What is particularly memorable with this boss is that he could knock Sonic out of his super form if he got ahold of him.
2) People who have used Super Tails a fair amount probably remember the pain that was trying to beat the Death Egg boss with Super Tails because the flickies will destroy the spike robots that you need kept alive to attack the boss with lol
3) The blue sphere special stages don't get faster the longer you are in the stage, it's related to how many blue spheres and coins you get. The more you get, the faster it goes.
I’d always imagined that Sega would contract Studio Junio to make the cutscenes for this game. It would have been even HIGHER received than it already was. If anything, for S3&K they should have done hand drawn instead of sprites, to bring out the full potential of the Artist’s sprite design. The levels in flat out form rather than pixelated would be a game to keep playing over and over. The Sonic CD Video, and this video cover both games perfectly

I've heard of this quote before from many sonic UA-camrs, but what I think how Sonic gets more used to the stage he's in is how he interacts with his environment, if you know what I mean.
Great video, this is just a nitpick but I think it's really funny when people try and describe music.
Like when you said Ice Cap Act 2's song was slower paced when it's exactly the same as Act 1, just with certain instruments muted at certain times
i am actually really a huge fan of marble garden. Its catchy music, is inredible speed, mixed with thoughtful platfrming, creative level gimmiks, and while the level is long, its a blast all the way. Carnivial nights is a cool zone, but also while i'm playing it Im constantly thinking about ice cap and wanting to play that instead.
That barrel on the carnival stage took me 2 years to beat. Never could get past it until one day it just happened

OOOHH! THAT'S WHY sonic 3 rarely gets re-releases! It's because the game's composer was Michael Jackson, I already knew he worked on the music, but I didn't know this was why they don't re-release it AS MUCH AS sonic 1 or 2, thank you SO MUCH for explaining WHY it HARDLY EVER gets re-releases, dude! THANK YOU!

I love this video a lot, but one thing I do want to mention is that even if you don’t necessarily do a video on it PLEASE check out sonic 3 AIR. I know you mentioned it briefly, but basically all of these things are even further improved in that version and it’s just such a great sonic 3 experience. You can even select music options from s3 prototype and s3 if you’d rather it from the s&k soundtrack. You can unlock the super peel out and drop dash through achievements too.I’ll shut up, but like I said you don’t need to make a video on it but I think you would love it based on what you talked about here, it’s great.
I've always looked at Carnival Night as the reward for getting through Marble Garden. The first time I played this as a kid, I had the hardest time with Marble Garden. I always loved it though because the boss was so damn cool.
Fun fact; Carnival Night gets a bit of a story in the Fleetway comic series. TL:DR; version; Robotnik built it without Knuckles knowing as a way to make some extra money. (Unexplained is why Robotnik needs money - at this point he's taken control of the entire planet) When Knuckles learns about it, it's after he's learned that Robotnik was tricking him, but he doesn't initially realise that Robotnik is involved - it's being run by the Marxio Brothers. (you have permission to groan at that one) Once Knuckles learns that Robotnik is the one funding Carnival Night, he finds a fault line and breaks the entire zone off the island. (Yes, Knuckles can apparently sense fault lines in a floating island. Don't question it.)
Fleetway isn’t canon at all but I like that they tried to explain weird things about the games like the big rings or the tripiness of the special zone.
Gotta be my fave game, or double game ever ha. I never got all the emeralds as a kid actually but this retrospective makes me wanna dust off my console n try again
in sonic mania, with medals you get from blue orbs bonus stages, you can get the peelout and the insta shield (what you called the wsa)
Excellent video. Though, I think the Sonic Ultimate Genesis Collection doesn't have S3&K. It has the games individually, but not together. Mega Collection and Classic Collection do however.
You know you can spindash into the spikes when it hits the top right it switches it upside down same with on the ground if its stuck in the ground shoots it into the robot
52:36 One can also think of this as a harder Knuckles fight. This represents the entirety of S3&K, the whole journey that the player just went through. It is a really cool way to show the development in the series and player.
100% agree! It always blows my mind talking about this game how there is not a single piece of dialogue to go along with any of this. Just fantastic environmental storytelling!

Hey, where did you get that plot synopsis from? Was that official? I don't recall there being any connection from Sonic 3&K to Adventure back when the games were originally released. I like it, tbh, just never heard it. For example, the mural depicts Robotnik in his mech from the Final Boss fight, not Chaos
Hey there! I got the plot synopsis from the Japanese translated manual of Sonic 3 which is located on sonicretro.org (I'll link). It talks about a "legendary dragon" but again it could've just been my hiccup or a mistranslation error. Hope that clears it up! I love Knuckles in this game. This is how to make replayability in a 2D Sonic game. Sonic Advance 2 is the example of how to *NOT* make good replayability in a 2D Sonic game.

I think self contained it certainly is but taking a step back and viewing at the whole scope of the franchise it could be interpreted as Perfect Chaos or Doomsday. Either way it’s quite amazing how Sonic Team was able to do so much worldbuilding without a single line of dialogue

my first video game ever was sonic the hedgehog 2 on sega genesis when I was 8 years old in 1995.
For the Death Egg act 2 regular boss, you do know you can also launch the bots by spin-dashing into them? You can take the thing out within a minute, it's not tedious at all. It's pretty fun, actually.

Yeah I would 100% say 3K is the only game in the franchise that is near to or perfect in the franchise. Completely blew me away playing it for the first time for the video, was stunned!
this game was the cause of the 8-year-old me throwing the controller many a time. never owned it but rented it at blockbuster. still absolutely love the music and sound effects from this game.

Eldarun it seems you’re misunderstanding how the spin top in marble garden works. It only moves super quick when it’s touching the ground. The more you move the higher it goes, so if you want to go down to the ground and move super quickly don’t press anything.

For the worst, I can't really think of any, but I haven't played as many game franchises as I should.
Then there are the ones in the middle like Mega Man 3 and Tomb Raider III. For these ones, I like them more than the second entries, potentially even have them be my favourite, but I wouldn't say they're as well made as the first. That and I prefer Mario 2 to Mario 3, though that's just me.

I had a port of 3 on the GBA when I was very young along with the DS game but I've been playing thru 3DW recently and have LOVED IT!
I would definitely say start with 1 because it's the shortest, then 2 which I feel has the best balance in difficulty and length, and then finally 3 which is the most polished and refined.

Mega Man 3 is definitely a better made game than the first one, at least in my opinion.

The insta-shield actually appears in a number of games. It's in the Sonic Advance series, for example.
Can you imagine if we got Sonic 3D Blast instead of Sonic 3? It's a blessing in disguise that the technology wasn't ready yet.

So for some reason Sonic’s ultimate genisis collection has sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles as separate games on the list but you can’t connect them at all. Also the back of the box I’m pretty sure mislabeled every game shown on the back.
sonic's ultimate genesis collection has sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles with all the original music.. its on ps3 and 360.. only issue some people may have is its not sonic 3 and knuckles combined, its sonic 3 and sonic and knuckles.. but i modded my ps classic and it has sonic 3, sonic and knuckles, AND sonic 3 and knuckles.. u can play whichever one u want.. if anyone has a ps classic and wants details just ask
