Why Sonic Adventure 2 is AMAZING!

- Sonic Adventure 2, just like the first game, has received an unfair lashing in recent years and an undeserved reputation as a bad game. I'm here to go into detail with SA2 to explain why it works, and why I, and many other people enjoy it. In this part, we'll go into every part of the general gameplay, as well as the Multiplayer and Chao World, as well as the soundtrack, art design, and character design. Part 2 will analyze the story, and go into individual levels.

@@dabluepittoo-aqua4213 Final Fantasy laugher ensues
You know what? Watching this made me realize how much the current Sonic Team can't pull off an Adventure remake. I want it to happen, but I know deep down they won't be able to do it right
It's both ST and the fanbase's faults.
@@ChiefMedicPururu The fanbase can be toxic, but anyone can throw a fit. Sonic Team's really the ones to blame because they're so caught up in what others think that they lose sight of their own vision. They just don't create from their passion anymore. They're scared of creating another Sonic 06 which, yes was badly rushed, but was over a decade ago. Sonic Team needs to realize that everybody makes mistakes, and what matters is what you do after those mistakes. Right now they're admitting defeat and giving in to what others want them to be. If they continue to be that way, Sonic is going to die, and this time for good.
@@SpeedMotionSamic But no one is telling them that upfront, tho.
@@ChiefMedicPururu Somebody should, but sadly it's not up to the fans to tell a multi million dollar company how to do their job
@@SpeedMotionSamic You're sure? Because I think they ARE listening to some people outside of SEGA, but it ain't the fans.
The beginning of the video, even as a joke, almost pisses me, because people used to think this was the best game, then suddenly this one dude say "I don't think so" and now this game was never good all of the sudden.
I know how you feel. :(
Even then, some people think age like milk 'cause they replayed to see if it holds up.
It's still the greatest Sonic game. It's just when things are great for too long, people need to start bashing it to try and get something new in its place. But it wont happen. They do the same thing to Micheal Jordan.
This game was my childhood and it’ll always be great in my eyes. I can see why people wouldn’t like the tails/eggman stages and the story but everything else is just peak sonic gameplay
Exactly, this happened to Persona 5 and Sonic Colors. There's also the sudden realization of Sonic 06 not being all that bad (Finally, people are actually understanding now)
You know something that so many critics seem to fail to understand is that something can be flawed AND good. I recently played SA2 after not playing it in a very long time and while there are some clunky mechanics at times and some frustrating parts I've found that I could get past everything with a "Git Gud" attitude. I didn't really care for the space hunting stages but I persevered and made it through them. I feel satisfied being able to make it through the game. Yes there are some outdated parts of the game, which is to be expected from a nearly 20 year old game, but it's still a really fun game.
Its funny that I haven't play the old sonic games that I use to love and when I go back playing them again, it makes me smile and redeem myself once again.
The knuckles stages aren't bad. You are just bad at it and should get good at it. The graphics may be old school but not bad. If you want bad look at those shitty mobile games or big rigs.
“It’s to be expected that a 20 year old game has flaws.”
Considering how so many older games have aged significantly better than SA2 like Sonic 3 and Knuckles, Mario World, and others, I don’t think that’s really an excuse to look over the problems.
@@Z3RO5286 get good? I can do that for smaller stages like Wild Canyon and Egg Quarters since the nerfed radar isn’t too bad for those levels, but for massive levels like Death Chamber and Mad Space? You can’t be good at those levels unless it’s hard mode where the emerald shards are in set locations. Either the game is nice to you and gives you a good emerald combination to give you an A rank, or it doesn’t and forces you to spend 15 minutes in a level.
@@Mojo1356 It's not an excuse, it's just facts. Even Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time have aged and those are still considered classic and revolutionary games. SA2 has some clunky and outdated mechanics, but it's not a bad game.
"Hi! I'm Omochao. Am I annoying you?"
I really don't understand the hate that little thing gets. It's adorable and it never gets in your way. I feel like people have taken a meme too seriously.
Also multiplayer Amy is cancer. I wish they kept the secondary characters as clones of the single player characters because it would have been better balanced.
Gamers today hate being told how to play, then wonder why they get stuck.
@@AkameGaKillfan777 yeah, but omochao is literally the perfect option. It doesn't tell you how to play but it's there on the side if you need help.
@@Hynotama I find Tikal to be a better option because it is nearly impossible to accidentally activate her.
EDIT: Except for that one time in Lost World where you have to jump into the spot where Tikal is located.
It's probably Heroes implementation coloring opinions, since he actually IS unskipable in that game.
@@brandonbrown6922 That's still odd to complain about, because Omochao is only unskippable with Team Rose's first level. Even then, you can skip past his dialogue and march forward with that short level. And in the rest of the game, you have to manually activate him in the menus by hitting Square.
I feel like Chaos, as guardian god of the chao, would make a lot of sense as the neutral attribute caretaker character. He’s already fully programmed to be playable in two player mode, and neutral chaos chao resemble him.

Nintendo fans should kill themselfes
I agreed on pretty much everything here except for your tangent on the character designs at the end. While I agree that they look good in 3D (although I still think keeping the classic designs would have been fine), I can't agree that they should be used for every single game going forward. They were created specifically for 3D, but the old designs were created to specifically look good in 2D, and outdo them in 2D as a result, with sharper, more striking silhouettes.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles showed us that a relatively interesting story can still be told using these designs. Add in some dialog and you have yourself a proto-Sonic Adventure, complete with a character arc in the form of Knuckles. In my personal opinion, their designs didn't really need to be updated at all, since that would avoid this split in the fandom ever having developed to begin with. But seeing as it's already happened, at the very least they should keep the 3D designs to the 3D games, and use the classic designs for 2D. Mania does this to great effect, and if you ask me, it's a far more beautiful game for it.
Besides that though, excellent review, 10/10 I wish more people like you would speak up like this
My opinions on each Gameplay style in the adventure games:
Sonic Adventure 1:
Sonic: Amazing
Tails: Pretty good
Knuckles: Pretty good to Great
Gamma: Decent
Amy: Okay
Big: Bad
Sonic Adventure 2:
Sonic and Shadow: Amazing
Tails and Eggman: Pretty good
Kunckles and Rouge: Pretty good to Great
Overall I consider Sonic Adventure 1 a Pretty Good game. While, I consider Sonic Adventure 2 to be great and my favourite 3D Sonic Game
For Me:
SA1
Sonic: 9/10
Tails: 7/10
Knuckles: 10/10
Amy: 6/10
Gamma: 8/10
Big: 3/10
SA2
Speed: 9/10
Treasure Hunting: 10/10
Shooting: 8/10
I love Treasure Hunting. This is my opinion. It's ok if you disagree.
I don't think there is a Sonic Gameplay that is a 0/10. I never played Boom so I can't judge its gameplay. Knuckles' Chaotix's gameplay isn't that bad. Colours is not great, but I'd still rather play it than Big.
@@x-mighty7602
My rankings:
SA1
Sonic: 10/10
Tails: 2/10
Knuckles: 7/10
Amy: 3/10
Gamma: 9/10
Big: 0/10
SA2
Speed: 10/10
Treasure Hunting: 9/10
Shooting: 10/10
I know I am in the minority of people's opinions on Tails stages in adventure 1. The fact that ranks do not exist and every level can be beaten in 30 seconds by completely skipping the whole level is not fun at all after the first stage.
Sonic Adventure 2 gets 1 point off for the treasure hunting stages for the space stages. While most of the time you can get an A rank, those stages do have bad rng spots that are nearly impossible to get an A from without having hints memorized. But overall, I think every level in 2 is almost perfect. There are more paths than people realize, I have been playing for 15 years and still discover new things I have never seen before.

I am so sick and tired of people blindly hating this game because of a bandwagon and for clout. Not only it's getting old and is not funny but it's very depressing.
I know this comment is old, but I agree. Plus, I haven't really seen real constructive arguments for why SA2 is a "bad game". It's all just either "it's terrible because it is", disingenuous/surface-level arguments, or problems that were created from ports/localization. It's a flawed game, but not fundementally flawed.
@@blackcatdreams2011 SA2 is a great sonic game. Same with the adventure games. The "flaws" can easily be avoided in the game such as the glitches and the graphics, etc. People who joke on adventure games being bad are the same people who still hop on hate bandwagons. The voice acting is not "bad". Your telling me that Ryan Drummond as sonic is worse than rodger craig smith?
Such a great review! SA2 has always been my favourite sonic game and I've also been so confused at the hate.
The only thing I've ever thought I'd change is the lack of Tails gameplay out of his mech - always thought itd be a great reward when you've completed all three stories to be able to play the speed stages as classic Tails
Finally somebody said it! Side mouth all the time is real bothersome, it should change according to the camera angle.
You and black hooded gamer made great videos im.not sure if it was you or him but the way you two broke down the stages (talking about your part 2 video) and the MUSIC of each stage. Wow. This game is my childhood i can remember playing this on my gamecube and hour long videos concerning the game? Im always a sucker for them. I dont usually be in the comment section but i honestly cant wait until you(or if you plan to) do other games like Sonic Heros and Sonic 06( imo i actually liked the game enough to beat it 4 times)
ImplantGAMES' latest reviews are doing the same things as Arin and ProJared did and people still think those guys are right.
Guess both of your reviews got ignored, since people still act as if the 3D Sonic games were ALL shit. :(
That statement is so true
I certainly don't think Implant's arguments against the Adventure games are as big of an issue as he made them out to be, but for what it's worth they did help me understand a little bit better why people might dislike the games.
That being said, I think anyone who directly claims to have "no nostalgic bias" can only have his or her statements taken with a grain of salt (especially since Implant did play Adventure 2 when it first came out).
@@iggyminious That's not what his comment section tells me. He seems to HATE the game.
@@iggyminious Yeah I can't comment on the comments section since I haven't seen it but I watched the video and while he did complain about a lot of minor things, he did it in a more digestible way compared to Jared's review.
@@ChiefMedicPururu To clarify one thing: my "no nostalgic bias" point was said at the end of ImplantGames' review (specifically as "I do not have a personal bias"), not in the comments section. I said it because at the end of the day, everyone has some amount of bias, and I don't like it when people claim otherwise.
With that said, I'm convinced he does hate the game; in 2001 he didn't care for it as much as the first Sonic Adventure, in 2015 he reviewed Adventure 2 and gave it a 2/5, in 2017 he reviewed it again for his "is it still good" series (long story short, he said no), and he still stands by those negative feelings in his 2020 review.
If I could give any advice to someone who wants to like the game but doesn't, it would be "go for 100%"; while I haven't fully done so yet, doing the A-ranks and optional missions gave me a much higher opinion of Sonic Adventure 2 than I had after my first play through.
Sonic's updated design with longer quills de-emphasized his look on curling up into a ball and spinning but emphasized his look about speed
That explains the noticeable lack of ball-curling in the Boost games.
It looks better for 3D as well. Have you seen Classic Sonic do a spindash in Generations? It looks weird as fuck.
Gotta say I’m so happy that Adventure fans are all coming out of the wood works lately and showing that these two games are amazing.
Great video, and something in regards to Sonic's running animation where his arms are behind him: I remember either reading or hearing somewhere that he was supposed to do the classic arm pose like in the 2D games, but his arms glitched and just forced themselves to just hang behind in a ninja-run style. I don't know if that's actually what happened, but if so, I actually like that result since it helps convey just how fast Sonic is going even to the point where they just stuck with it in all subsequent games.
1:04:56 Actually, you can bulldoze through the Hero/Dark races with one Chao, if said Chao is Neutral it can play both modes.
Oooh I didn't know that! Cool.
I have only ever played the Dreamcast version, so the opening was a jarring realization.
There's some new mods out that I'd like to think you'll be very happy to see :)
In my opinion, the best way you'll ever see this game as of September 25, 2019, is with the mods in the loader in this order:

>Cutscene Revamp
>Dreamcast Characters

It's not really hated but more of divisive
I will say, that changing the mech’s physics to that of Gamma’s and having the radar track all 3 emeralds in the mod loader made me appreciate the improvements in the game styles in SA2. Those were the things that were making them feel like a chore to me.

EDIT: You also make it out to be that having Eggman as not a comical villain makes him "More than a comical villain". While I agree that he shouldn't be a one-note character, I think having a comical villain at the core of his character works really well. And they keep the core of everyone else's characters in mind so I mean
I just started playing this game on my Xbox today and man it’s is a goddamn blast, yes the speed stagers are the best parts of the game, but I like the other stages as well and the mech stages are very satisfying to play

Coming up on The First 48, an argument among friends spins out of control when one of them makes a deadly decision.
Cleveland, Ohio, just before dawn, in the working class neighborhood of North Collinwood, a woman flags down a patrol unit.
Phone call:
911 operator: 34, go ahead with the info
Police officer: we have a male that’s down.
Police officer: I believe he’s shot.
Police officer: He’s not breathing.
When paramedics respond, they find a man on the front porch, dead. Detective Melvin Smith moved from Mississippi to Cleveland as a teen, he will be the lead. The victim, known in the neighborhood as ‘Los’, is a 39-year-old Cleveland native, he was living with his cousin at the house where he was killed.
Scene investigation:
Smith: His shirt is ripped.
Smith: He was involved in a physical fight.
Medical examiner: That, there’s the entrance.
Detective Leto Sandavol: Upper lip?
Medical examiner: Upper lip.
Smith: Ah, there it is.
Smith: One shot straight through the upper lip into his brain.
An hour in, Smith talks to the women who flagged officers down, she’s the victims cousin.
Smith: Tell me, what happened to him?
Woman: well um..
(She says that they were hanging at her place with a friend, Tamera.)
Smith: who is she
Woman: Tamera Coleman.
Woman: We was drinkin’ & everything was cool, then.. we made a joke like Los broke or whatever.
(She claims the victim got angry and hit Tamera)
Women: Tamera was like “Los, you don’t put your hand on me, I got someone for you”
(She claims Tamera called someone and told them to “take care” of the victim)
Woman: she kept on screamin’ they was gonna come over and beat my cousin up.
(Then she claims Tamera turned on her)
Woman: I was like “now you wanna fight me!?”
(They started fighting and it spilled outside, moments later, a man showed up)
Smith: then what happened, what did he do?
Woman: I don’t know cause me and Tamera was still up there arguing
( she claims she was too busy fighting to get a good look at the shooter)
Smith: now your gonna tell me you don’t know, you know everything up until the end, but you don’t know what happened after that.
Woman: I never seen that guy go in or outside my house.
Smith: Don’t tell me what you didn’t see, tell me what you saw!
Smith: Somebody shot your cousin and killed him and you know who shot him and you won’t tell me.
Woman: we was still on the corner fighting.
Smith: so somebody shot your cousin so who did it! You know who shot him.
Woman: no
Smith: I’m not sure what to do with you.
Smith: I don’t know why she won’t cooperate, it’s her cousin. She knows Tamera called someone, she knows a guy came over there but she doesn’t know anything after that, I don’t buy it.
Smith: I don’t know how your conscience is gonna be with you for the rest of your life if we don’t solve this and you never tell me who you saw shoot your cousin and kill him, you ready to tell me what I need to know?
Woman: the man who was walking down the street.
Smith: walking down the street towards your house!?
Woman: yes. He looked like he had something over his shirt or whatever.
(She claims she didn’t see anything else but says Tamera would know, she gives a possible address for Tamera)
They find Tamera at a vacant apartment and bring her to Homicide for question, she admits to fighting the victim and his cousin, but denies calling anyone and claims that Los was still alive she left. However..
They catch her on surveillance making a phone call to someone where she confesses to calling the suspect, she’s booked for manslaughter. Two hours later she wants to talk again.
This time she admits to calling the suspect named Ed but still denies seeing the murder but guarantees it was Ed who she identifies as Ed Johnson. 26-year-old Edwardlee Johnson has numerous convictions including robbery, assault and concealed carry.
Smith: Ed went over with a gun, he intended to do some damage, he’s considered armed and extremely dangerous. We need to find this guy and take ‘em down.
For the next few days, the fugitive task force hits several locations looking for Johnson, but as the first 48 runs out, Johnson is nowhere to be found.
Summary: In the First 48, Cleveland Detectives responded to the murder of a man named “Los”, discovered he had gotten into a fight with a friend who called the suspect to the seen, identified the suspect as Edwardlee Johnson, searched for Johnson but have been unable to find him.
10 days into the investigation, Johnson turns himself in with his attorney.
Smith:He’s been through the system quite a few times, he knows how to maneuver his way around, I really don’t expect a whole lot out of this guy.
Interview with the suspect:
Smith: Ok, I’m Detective Smith from the Homicide unit.
Smith: would you like to talk to me or would you like to have your attorney?
-------------------------------------------
Johnson: Attorney, sir.
Smith: he’s not talking, I’ll precede with the case as is.
Smith: I didn’t see any signs of remorse in Edwards eyes.
Smith: He gets a phone call, gets the gun, and goes to the scene and kills the victim, this guy’s a stone-cold killer. Tamera may not have intended for him to kill the victim but the facts are that the phone call is the reason why the victim is dead.
Edwardlee Johnson was subsequently found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 25 years to life.
Tamera Coleman plead guilty to involuntary manslaughter and received a mandatory 3 year sentence

Far as I'm concerned I love SA2. I've played it since release on the dreamcast and im still an Avis believer that it's gameplay and story is among the best the franchise has to offer or maybe even the best all round. I fully understand and appreciate it's faults such as the treasure hunting stages sometimes taking too long but thats down to my own skill more than say the radar. Fact is I'm SA2 was released on Nintendo Switch, if Buy it, in a heartbeat and play through it all over again. If SA3 is ever a thing I'd pre-order the damn game lol. Ive always loved this game and i always will
I agree but you have to get good at the tessure stages.
It's refreshing to see some positivity for a change. It was really interesting seeing the downgrades that happened in the SA2: Battle port. I'm really curious to see the details that were lost from the story in the localization. I still really love revisiting the story, warts and all. So it'll be cool to get some more insight on it in the next part.
All in all, great video.
SPEEPS Highway covers stuff about the adventure games, including different cutscenes in sa2 and sa2b.
Downgrade? Nothing was downgraded for the GameCube Port. It’s the Hd port that’s downgraded.
Actually, many of the cutscenes in SA2:B are inferior to those in the Dreamcast version. Lots of missing lighting effects and other details were lost in the port. Speepshighway made a pretty comprehensive video covering all the differences between the two.
Also, I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure the HD release was built off of SA2:B. Which carried over that ports’ problems while introducing new ones.
@@MrVideo-tp1xn battle has some lightning issues, but because it brings a monumentally better multiplayer as well as fixing the sound mixing issues the Dreamcast version had, I can overlook them usually.
@@MrVideo-tp1xn Not like there were that many to begin with.
What Sonic games need to do from now on, is keep 2D gameplay in 2D games and bring back the 3D free-flowing, trick-based gameplay that SA2 had. Blending the two together was good for Sonic Generations, but that's it. Nowadays, it's just annoying and it feels stiff and clunky compared to how smooth and easy it was to control Sonic back then.
Yup
I think it worked better for the boost stages in Unleashed because a lot of the 2D sections still took advantage of the fact that Sonic was in a 3D environment. Look at the first 2D sections in Arid Sands and Jungle Joyride to see what I mean. Hitting certain springs, pressing certain buttons would take you to a different route but not an upper or lower route but a route to Sonic’s left or right. Classic Sonic in Generations similarly takes advantage of the 2.5D element of the stage
I’m ok with 2D or 2.5D sections as long as they’re not overused

NNNOOTTT to mention the fact that he’s playing a DX Version, a shitty port of the classic. As someone who’s played the original on a Dreamcast, that getting stuck on a loop thing and clipping through the floor ISNT there. Some people think of Sonic as "forza on feet" where you're simply supposed to go fast and avoid shit, which is only *half* correct.
People forget that Sonic is also rooted in exploration, specifically in new pathways to get to the end goal, and collectible items like chaos emeralds along the way.
The beauty of Sonics unique gameplay style thats indigenous to his franchise is the ability to *explore new ways* to go faster and get to the end. This allows for greater replayability.

Sonic Adventure 2 is not only my favorite Sonic game, but my favorite Game of all time. This review is very well constructed and I will link someone this when I'm asked why I like SA2 so much. This felt like it took the exact words I would use to review this game. GJ
I used an imulator to play sonic adventure 2 (the Dreamcast version) but I was stopped by the stage that you collect the three chaos emeralds... I didn't even got to play white jungle because that stage might've been a blast! well. I tried the Chao garden at once but, I just couldn't... taking care of little creatures in video games Might be awesome! but I'm just bad at playing games on how they want me to play it, I'm sorry that I might've missed the best thing that I would ever witnessed... and it's nice to see you here Sonic Overtime! :)
Sa2 is my favorite game right behind legend of Zelda windwaker

Windwaker is one of my fave games!

@@5starjellyfish Let's hope it doesn't take as long for him to make as this video took.
As someone who is trying to get into reviewing I personally agree with you. You can have your own opinion on this game but I'm tired of the negativity surrounding this game. I don't think it's the best but it's good and it is an improvement of the original Sonic Adventure formula.
Also I liked Projared's review but what I didn't like was how he generalized why everyone likes Sonic Adventure 2. He said we only like it because of Sonic and Shadow, the Chows (don't know how it's spelt) and nostolgia. I don't like the Chows, I didn't grow up on this game and while I did like the Sonic and Shadow levels, I think my favorite stages were the mech stages.
@@krepykatreviews9245 what? Projared’s review of SA2 is abysmal. It’s because of the likes of him and Arin that critical reviews of SA2 have such a bad reputation for those that still defend this game. If you want a critical video of SA2 that’s fair, watch Somecallmejohnny’s review.
Sonic adventure 2 is a masterpiece of game design. There are things for everyone, lets say you like to explore you can, or you like to just rush tru the stage and you can do it too, you like grinding? Chaos garden, you like uncovering secrets? the game gets you chasing power ups
The problem is when the most of the fanbase comes to move at high speed and not play tedious treasure hunter stages
One detail I really like with Sonic's running animation here is that he now ducks a little when trying to reach top speed, scientifically this reduces the air resistance and air can flow around him instead of pushing him. So in easier terms he can move much faster, this may also be the reason why he puts his arms behind him.
Too bad for us humans in real life it's impossible as it would hurt our bones rather then help us run faster
Remember how Sonic in the Classic games puts his arms on the hips to run faster .
I already really liked SA2, but this video made me have a deeper appreciation for it.
- I also would like to add ( you may have covered it in your video and I may missed it), but you’re able to manually change what’s in the action window. It’s not a 100% fix, but it helps.

Sorry, as someone who just recently 100%'d this game on stream and everything, I HAD to like this video immediately before even watching, because FINALLY UA-cam recommended me a video after watching some SA2 OST videos that were not, "SA2 is BAD and was ALWAYS BAD and YOU are BAD for LIKING IT!" thank goodness. I swear I am watching through this video though but thanks for this, it is almost catharsis at this point. I love this game.
EDIT: Watched the whole video. It was good. Especially the trolling copypasta voice throughout.
I really have no problem when I first played it back when I was a kid. People in these days are blind to see that this game is better than the ones that's after sonic 06.
how in the fuck did you manage to A rank some of those tails missions
@@papayalol Eternal Engine was a nightmare tbh, especially collect 100 Rings, but the rest was just a matter of repetition and locking on and holding for as long as possible.
Same. I 100%'ed it last summer. It was a huge fucking grind. And honestly? I loved every second of it. I try to return to childhood games no sooner than every five years, but I've been dying to 100% it again and it hasn't even been a year. My sister was with me the whole time and was in the "only good because of nostalgia" camp. Not in a bad way, but it made me conscious of the thought throughout the playthrough, and I realized that, despite what everyone said, it was a fucking amazing game. Even the port imo.
@@papayalol I found the tails/eggman missions to be pretty easy. No more than like 6 attempts max per mission. It's all about the combos: knowing what enemies you can group together, when to shoot, and heck, even getting a free 5k whenever you find that one floating robot that shoots 10 targetable missiles. Killing him before he launches those counts as one enemy, but after they're launched count as 10+.
The sonic and shadow stages were the ball busting parts for me.
It’s 2020 and it’s only the second Sonic game I’ve played and I love it. It’s just a game I can boot up and knock a few levels out when I’m bored
If you like that then I recommend Sonic Riders and Sonic Colors. Both good games that you can complete pretty fast as you get better. Sonic Riders is a racing game, but its really good and fun when you get used to it.
If you like sonic adventure 2, I'd honestly recommend the original the original sonic adventure, and sonic generations. Sonic adventure, although it has its own sets of problems, is a much more open game that has some controls that sa2 really shouldn't have changed (I'm mainly talking about how you can spam the spindash in sa1. and how the mech controls are a bit better in the original in my opinion.) And sonic generations is also a great game. Yes, it has a ton of 2d sections, but the 3d parts are super fun.
34:51 "GuyWhoKnowsWhatHesTalkingAboutProductions"
I always loved that little touch! So true!
I see The Adventure series of Sonic like I do with the Prime series of Metroid. They aren’t perfect replicas of their 2D counterparts, but they keep the important fundamentals that were established in the 2D games and mix them up for 3D.
Ah yes, an overly long analytical video about a Sonic Adventure game.
Honestly no joke I’m a sucker for this kind of videos...
Then let me introduce you to J reviews
This was so, so good. I've always had a problem to put into words why SA2 is amazing, and often get shut down with the "nostalgia factor" argument, but you totally nailed it. I haven't seen such a complete and fair review for this game such as this one.
It honestly irks me how many fucking dweeblet new sonic fans tell me I'm wearing nostalgia glasses for liking SA2, even though I hadn't played it until a few years ago. ( I pushed through SA1 and while I liked it I couldn't take it seriously).
Honestly though I wasn't a sonic fan (at least the 3D games, I grew up watching Sonic X and playing 1,2 and 3) until I played SA2 and realized just how great the story, characters, design, soundtrack stages and gamplay elements were in that particular title. Since then I've played through 06, Unleashed, Generations, and Colors and although those games are fine in their own respect none of them gave me the same satisfaction as SA2.
However even in the face of all that the meta generation utterly ignore the solid aspects of the game, or anyone's argument for them and parrot whatever their favorite youtuber says.

Their is an overwhelming majority who hate the game nowadays. The popular opinion is apparent. The opinion of it being beloved is entirely flipped over its head since 2012/2013 and it hasnt recovered since. The thing about Sonic tho is the problems come from a lot of sources. SEGA for mishandling their games in the past 10 years, IGN and all these reviewers for stapling the series as a franchise without any positives, and the fanbase itself for being tainted in the opinions of all these guys for not knowing what they want. For instance those who want another Adventure game are socially mocked. So the fanbase consensus is that wanting an Adventure game is a bad thing. You arent allowed to want it or hope to even have it. And that's a problem.

I hate the boost style of gameplay in Modern Sonic games for one reason:
*2D sections.* I HATE the 2D sections. SEGA, choose your gameplay style! Either make the game 3D or 2D. Stop mixing them together!
Or the weird Modern level design in Generations, where you'd be boosting fast for one moment in 3D and then doing very slow platforming in 3D. I get that Sonic 3 & Knuckles has this design mentality too (fast segments, slower segments), but it's way more distracting in Generations.
Awesome video. SA1 and SA2 are my favorite games and it's nice to see a thoughtful review from someone who cares about these games as much as I do. I'm tired of the boosting and shallow storytelling, I want another adventure-style game.

YES! VINDICATION! I've suddenly discovered a couple people with REALLY good Sonic videos that actually treat the series fairly while still acknowledging the flaws! So good! Love this!!
I think I should give a bit of my thoughts on the game I had over the years. 11 years old was when I finally got to play Sonic Adventure 2 for the first time. That's nearly nine years ago. I had it on the GameCube and played it from start to finish. At the time, I thought the game was just okay. I enjoyed the speed and mech stages fine but I found the hunting levels boring. Over the years, I've noticed a lot of criticism this game seemed to have received from the likes of Somecallmejohnny, Projared, TheRetroReplay, and others and I couldn't help but agree. I do remember liking Sonic Adventure 1 a lot when I first played it then it eventually became a game I disliked for a while then went back to loving it again.
It wasn't until about nearly two years ago that I got a copy of the game on Sega Dreamcast. My opinion had changed completely after replaying it. Most of my issues with the game were either very subjective, exclusive to the GameCube version (although that could be because I was playing it on the Wii) or based on first impressions.
Sonic 3 used to be my favourite game in the series but honestly, in recent years, I have to give that title to Adventure 1 and 2 respectively. Adventure 2 in particular is one of my favourite 3D platformers. It excels at what Sonic is supposed to be in almost every area. Speed and platforming with a high skill ceiling, memorization to test your skill on keeping your fast paced momentum consistent, and experimenting with Sonic's moveset to see what crazy shit you can do with him in the levels.
The mech stages are a lot of fun. Trying to keep your momentum up whilst locking on to enemies and avoiding their attacks is very addictive and feels very rewarding. The treasure hunting stages feel more like hunting stages now as most of the challenge this time around comes from learning the levels rather than completely relying on the radar. Memorizing the piece locations and getting them out of order for extra points is really satisfying and is made even better by the control. Very enjoyable albeit a bit daunting at first.
I'll explain more after I finish watching this video.
Will you speak more of it?
It's your first impressions. I have my Gamecube copy and it works really well.

That’s literally the name of the game with SA2, coming from SA to SA2 always felt like a natural advancement of the controls. I ALWAYS feel like I’m constantly getting better at SA2 even when I’m just casually playing through the stages. To this day I STILL find new and faster routes to incorporate into my runs of the game. I saw a comment on The Geek Critique’s video on Shadow the Hedgehog claiming that reason why Sonic isn’t taken seriously is because of Shadow (both the game & character). About the Sonic Adventure games not being perfect especially as transitions from 2D to 3D, let's not forget that the Mega Drive games weren't perfect either. Sonic 1 had bad pacing and several boring levels, Sonic 2 had bad enemy placement and several game breaking bugs, and Sonic 3 can drag at times not to mention had more offensive automated speed sections than the Adventure games combined. What's worse, 6 seconds of Sonic running with a huge boulder behind him? Or 16 seconds of Sonic skating through the beginning of Ice Cap Zone? I'll let you decide.
Oh and to give credit to Sonic Adventure 1, I only came across 1 game breaking glitch and it's not a glitch you could find by accident. Compare that to Sonic 2 where it has three game breaking glitches that you could potentially run into by accident, not to mention vanilla Sonic 3 which had multiple glitches that got you stuck with no way out. So let me get this straight.
*Sonic 2 has a few glitches that you can run into by accident and also force you to start from the beginning, same for vanilla Sonic 3*
"Eh, Sonic 2 is still one of the best Sonic games, plus Sonic 3&K doesn't have game breaking glitches and you still have a save feature in its vanilla state"
*Sonic Adventure has harmless glitches at worst and don't do much to affect the player's enjoyment, plus also has a save feature to prevent starting from scratch*
"Uuuggh! One of the wurst games I've ever played, it's so broken and buggy and bad"
I think I rest my case.
Basically every game ever made has glitches, especially early 3D games and even 2D games.
Your case has been awakened and called to battle once more.
The ice cap cutscene is fully automated. No need to engage in the shallow but egregiously required holding down on the stick. It's also placed at the beginning, and so not an out of place drop in challenge like the truck.
2D games are overall more reliable than the 3D ones. There aren't stupid invisible walls that force the player on specific paths when they look like shortcuts. Nor are there the opposite with textured walls with no collision hiding around.
@@Scroteydada But didn't Angel Island have a section with Eggman's battleship where the player has to hold right while the ship just drops bombs?
More reliable?
I feel this is mostly subjective.
While the 2D games have a more consistent design.
Some could argue the 2D games have bottomless pits you won't see until you fall into them.
And of course you can't see what's very far ahead, making it a little worry-some at high speeds.
And admittedly there's been quite a few instances where I and many others have clipped through the collision in Sonic 2 and Sonic Mania.
To be honest I feel the whole 2D vs 3D is a little pointless at this point, because not only are they designed differently, but they aren't the same within their own dimensions.
What I mean is, are you talking about Adventure or Forces?
@@Ronan34753 Adventure. And 2D and 3D are both Sonic so the core design applies to both. The instant chokes are more persistent in the 3D games. Bottomless pits in the classics are telegraphed by being at the bottom of the stage where the camera stops scrolling. Out running the camera is also a bigger problem in 3D. Visibility can too easily be ruined as geometry doesn't turn transparent.
@@Scroteydada Maybe, but what if you thought it was a bottom path of some sort?
Not sure what you mean by outrunning the camera.
But yeah, SA1's camera could get stuck and be a little troublesome.
Still, I feel it's mostly up to the player which one they prefer to put up with.
I'm actually meant to be working on a 3D fangame for SAGE, got any more complaints for the 3D games you would like to address?
If you feel like it of course.
As corny and imperfect as the English voices are, I still generally enjoy them and would prefer to stick with them. They're so ingrained into the game's identity for me that listening to any other dub just doesn't feel right to me.
That’s why if they ever remake the adventure games they need to keep the old voice acting in the game or re hire the original voice actors to redo lines... I like Roger and Jason but each of those voice actors represent a different era of sonic, can’t see roger or Jason voicing Sonic in the adventure games...
Ryan is that youthful energetic kid
Jason it that free spirited teen
Roger is the seasoned hero
So each voice represents a specific personality of Sonic during those times
There not corny nor imperfect. The voice acting in the game are the best sonic voice actors that fit with the characters.

Are those really flaws? I mean , why the fact that RE4 have more focus on action over horror is a flaw ? i can understand the fact that it's sort of sad for the fans of the original trilogy but looking at RE4 as a stand alone title, i can't see the problem with this fact, it's a really well made action game. Also, why the fact that the missions are long is a problem? This game give to the player *A LOT* of chances to save the progress in pretty much every mission of the game , if you are bored you can save you progress and turn off the videogame. Also, why the more limited controls are a flaw ? They are pretty smooth and They fit perfectly with the proposal of the gameplay, personally, i never had a problem with them and i played RE4 *A LOT* of times. Sorry for the bad english, i'm brazilian
A lot of the "criticisms" I gave of those three games also fit into the "at worst, even fabricate flaws" that I mention shortly after. Sa2 and Sa1, Heroes are masterpieces.
Dude... whenever I hear people defending the Sonic Adventure games against people complaining that they're somehow too hard or poorly-designed, it often echos the likes of things like Crash Bandicoot, Devil May Cry, and yes, even Dark Souls of all things. (Ya gotta "git gud" at Sonic!) This has been happening a lot in recent years, as it seems any game that demands reasonable levels of skill from the player gets dumped on as a broken mess because a lot more mistakes on the player's part are possible. So, yes, in a sense, Sonic is in a similar boat with not just Crash, but Dante and... the chosen undead... in a way.
Devil May Cry in particular seems to mirror Sonic in this sort of regard the most, despite not remotely being a series of platformers, but of over-the-top melee-focused combat action games with a light use of ranged weaponry. If you've never played this series, I'd highly recommend it to any Sonic Adventure fan, despite not really playing much like them at first glance. For, you see, these games really pump up the player skill attributes/rewards, have a similarly cocky attitude and protagonist, and even have a nearly-identical ranking system, which even has a micro-version of sorts used throughout in the middle of battles, not unlike the 100-2000 point bonuses in SA2. Honestly, these are the games that Sonic Unleashed's nighttime stages should have emulated, rather than the more methodical, weighty, puzzle-addled, quick-time-even-ridden style of the God of War series. I'd particularly recommend starting with either DMC3, often regarded as the best in the series (as well as being a prequel), or DMC4, as it largely focuses on a new protagonist (with the original three games' protagonist still being playable in about 40% of the game) to give new focus and perspective, while not having to deal with as much history baggage you might expect from a fourth entry. Seriously, give the Devil May Cry series a shot, and you'll definitely find some Sonic Adventure 1+2 DNA embedded in there. I'm telling ya, if we ever get a Sonic Adventure 3, I'd love for there to be some new playable character who plays like a Devil May Cry game! It fits with Sonic more than you might think.
(On another note, the Sly Cooper series also goes highly-recommended to anyone who adores the Sonic Adventure games, as they're also 3D platformers filled with exploration, that utilize anthropomorphic animals in relatively-complex stories with fairly-serious tones.)
Like, seriously... *look at this stuff!*

I'm sure we could see Sonic pulling off a stunt like this...
ua-cam.com/video/VlHY6xRpktk/v-deo.html
I think it's simple. Sonic is about learning levels, not just passing them. This is why the ring system works. Getting hit is pretty inconsequential on your first few playthroughs, but as you increasingly warm up to the skill ceiling, that losing one ring feeling is as bad as dying in a hard level in Mario.
The ring system is exactly why I dislike Sonic Advance 2, Sonic Adventure 2 and even Rush at times. Instant deaths. Unexpected. Unpredictable. Unnecessarily punishing. Frustrating. They have no place in the Sonic gameplay philosophy.
It would be like if enemies could stunlock you as long as you can do to them in DMC. You'd just be alienated, no matter how impressive the skill ceiling is. It would be a stupidly designed journey to get there you'd reject out of self respect.
And they’re also similar in how the games journalism scene keeps giving them shit for having skill based style gameplay that they can’t walk through with zero effort, while also saying they have stupid stories and characters when the story and characters are what people love about Sonic and DMC.
Hell, Sonic isn’t even my favorite character in the series but I still love him for being a family friendly version of Dante.
I wouldnt be totally against it. I have no problem with innovations that arent too out of the way of Sonic. People forget that Mario innovates all the time what with the Fludd and Cappy. Also the gravity in Galaxy and whatnot. why cant Sonic?
I'd pick 4 because 3 is really punishingly difficult. An already fairly difficult game was made way more so when it was moved overseas.
Part 2 of this review here: ua-cam.com/video/fPvtm9Ms_1g/v-deo.html
UA-cam no longer puts the following video in the recommendation list you get with the video. So posting part 2 here.
It's ironic that people still say SA1 & SA2 are overrated.....even though that's the general consensus now
I pay little mind to what the crowd of Sonic fans say about a specific game, because it always changes. Unleashed used to be just as detested as Heroes, Shadow and Sonic 2006. Now it's being held higher than Generations. Colours used to be seen as one of the greatest Sonic games, now it's considered massively overrated.
A lot of people's opinions seem to sway with whatever the new popular opinion is.
@@casualvanilla fucking nailed it
that intro is actually killing me, subscribing
The biggest problem with gamers today is they have this sense of entitlement where they feel the game should play the way THEY want it to play. Many casual gamers hate having to learn mechanics and will claim the game is badly designed based on their own incompetence(see Arin Hanson for reference). Also the rise of internet funnymen becoming "critics" popularized being nitpicky. Lets face it, nitpicking is essentially critique blackface. Now everyone thinks they're a critic but lacks the ability to properly analyze anything, in addition to unskilled players unfairly labeling games bad when they don't understand the game or it's mechanics.
Love your channel so far.
I can’t agree more
@Ryu Bateson Who?
@Ryu Bateson Sorry, I didn't know about who that guy was.
I agree. Anyone can insult and nitpick a movie or game for easy laughs and views; most can't actually analyse why it is they think the product is bad.
Finally!!!! I’ve been waiting so long for this ever since the SA1 review!!!!!!!
Regarding your comments that SA2 doesn't have mod fixes for the port problems you mentioned, have this
www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Sonic_Adventure_2#Featured_mods
I haven't tested this stuff myself yet, I will later, but these seem to fix the major gripes with the PC port as well as just generally making the game look better.
I don't know, maybe some of these didn't exist when you made this video, or maybe you just didn't know about PC Gaming Wiki or gamebanana, but this is why you need to do good research. Not a major problem with the video, but you could have informed a lot of people about these mods' existence and improved their game experience.
Have a nice day.
Honestly, there should be a fully fledged Chao Garden game, where the objective is to get the best Chao possible, but also to collect as many different ones as possible. Add some fun mini games with plenty of player participation, in-game objectives that earn you different items to level up your Chao or things for your Chao to play with. Maybe you can do certain races to collect objects to make a personalised home for your favourite Chao, and a good ring system to buy special Chao(like shiny Chao and two tone Chao from SA2) and exclusive things for your Chao’s home so you have an incentive to participate in as many mini games and races as you can. Maybe a daily quest/interaction you can do to increase a Chao’s affection for you to give you a reason to keep coming back. I think that would be really cool, if done correctly.
Chao garden mobile.
It's literally perfect for a mobile game imo and Sega are sitting on gold by not considering it
I didn’t think of that, but now that you’ve brought it to my attention, I’m realising it couldn’t be anything else.
The way people hate on the adventure games I assume is because they aren't a one for one from 2d Sonic to 3d Sonic. What they want from Sonic comes from the classics. The later games got worse
I died at the "I am soOoOo lOst" "SuCh bAaAad dEsiGn" part
I’m just going to say this right now and I will always live by this till the day I die. I absolutely love this game, you can give me every reason in the book as to why you think it’s terrible and that’s not gonna change the way I feel towards this game. Everything about this game, even it’s flaws, is so full of charm and it doesn’t really get old at all. This game will always be my favorite sonic game in the series
"People enjoy ripping on such an easy target to boost themselves and the games they like up, by tearing something else down." So they're basically bullies. Sounds about right. It's fine if you think a game is better than others but mocking people that like it is such a childish, immature thing to do that I can't possibly take critics that do it seriously, even if they make points that are true or make some sort of sense
Ruby at the same time does have a point though. Like blaming the game cause the player lacks skill(IGN is one) to not know what they're informing themselves on.
People in these comments really came to a video that is very clearly going to be a positive take on SA2 so they can get mad and shit on the game with the exact non-arguments being mocked in the video.
The tressure hunting stages are really good.
They are
@@megapokesonicx There not bad or pain in the ass as most critics say. There challening and that's good. Sm64 is a classic as well.
@@Z3RO5286 I agree
I am very happy that I came across your channel after watching your response to projared's SA2 video, because I love all of the sonic videos you have made
I'm not even a sonic fan and I think this is a decent game.
I really hate how game grumps made it cool to hate on sonic games, especially adventure.
Then again, the Lovelies have become quite the creepy cult.
