"Why do human beings kill human beings?"
Let's get animated with 'Power of the Daleks'! Also, please leave a comment, "like" the video and share it around to appease the almighty algorithm!
TOMARROW THE WORLD (Aka evil of the daleks), whitaker is the best dalek writer writhing power and evil (My All time favorite doctor who story)
“Why do human beings kill human beings?”
Oh give it a couple years Dalek, you’ll understand something similar enough when the Imperial Daleks are made.
Wait a few stories for the humanised daleks.
The Supreme from Planet of the Daleks would like a word.
5:52 "They don't have a poker face or a tell, just that unbiased, unblinking eye." That sums up what makes the daleks scary to me. The blank expression and complete silence as it studies its surroundings. Like the weeping angels, there's something tense about the villain being right next to the characters and listening.
Part 1 Cliffhanger: 3 dead Daleks and a Kaled mutant
Part 2: 1 live Dalek, pretending to be subservient
Part 3: 3 live Daleks, plotting their conquest
Part 4: 4 live Daleks, creating an army of countless other Daleks
Part 5: The Dalek Army Reborn, on the march to Exterminate everyone in the colony.
Part 6 Ending: 1 Dalek, clinging to life.
The cycle of fascism.
Blimey, David Whitaker wrote some terrifying cliffhangers.
And we're all glad it's over
We thought it would last
Every minute of the future
Is a memory of the past
Coz' we gave all the power
We gave all the best
And everyone lost everything
And perished with the rest.
Life is life!
"Opus Dei" Laibach
10:36 fun fact the Daleks in the background a cardboard cut outs to save money.
One of the most important Doctor Who stories ever. I'll admit I find the animation of this a bit clunky (it's much improved with Macra Terror) but the script is strong and it's important to judge this one on the story itself and not just the reconstruction. The Daleks are insane, clever beings and it's a highly original and clever story that introduces Troughton effortlessly. David Whitaker is a genius and underrated writer for the show.
Ben W what we really need now is Evil of the Daleks animated
@@crimsondynamo615 Yes yes yes.
Just wondering, is david whitaker related to jodie whitaker? I've been trying to find this out and i can't find it!
They are rereleasing the story with better animation and colour
The special edition animation is a vast improvement.
Its devastating that troughtons eara had so many episodes lost, even tho there able to recreate them with animation. Its sad that we aren't able to see his great performance as it was originally aired.
Sooo true, the animations are really good but the reason i prefer the originals is because of troughton s acting
The fact that we most likely won’t ever see the original six episodes absolutely kills me!!
DALEKS CONQUER & DESTROY!
Indeed they do
One of my favourite Troughton stories and has The Daleks at their best, manipulative, intelligent, ruthless and get to do a lot of shouting. Still a great story today!
Also that clip where it’s playing the eerie music and panning over all the corpses in the corridor in episode 6 where it stops at Janley’s body will now occupy my nightmares for the rest of my life
I was really surprised how good (and modern) this story was. Genuinely creepy and suspenseful.
It really has hold up over the years.
One of the best Dalek stories ever. I’d go so far as to rate it higher than the generally-accepted pinnacle that is Genesis. Daleks at their scheming, conniving, manipulative best.
Only now I've read the description and found out that the intro is a work of psychopathic MVP of FiveWhoFans himself! Thank you for this little piece of perfection, Dan!
I’ve tried to watch as much of the existing Troughton era as much as possible and even starting watching the animated reconstructions and to answer your question I don’t think Ben is super useless but clearly he was written for the Hartnell era to do all the heavy lifting action and once Troughton came and it became more sciency the companions got worse and once Jamie arrived they were done for
I think it’s interesting how the Dalek plot to slowly rebuild almost takes a back seat and is left on the side burner as more and more attention is given to the colony’s inner turmoil and the Daleks don’t even matter to that drama for the first 5 parts however the Doctor always stresses their importance and it’s not till part 6 where they break off and become the most powerful and dangerous group in the fighting. I can somewhat complain that the boring colony stuff takes bigger precedence over the Daleks but it’s an obvious set up and it goes well with the idea these guys being so subtle before it’s too late
Of it wasn’t for the rebels at the colony the Daleks wouldn’t have gotten to power. Lesterson would’ve been able to deactivate them when he realised what was really going on with the Daleks but the rebels blackmailed and then sedated him. I was glad to see Janley and Bragen die in the end.
Wow, this is the scariest I’ve ever seen the Daleks.
I'm getting some real Victory of the Daleks vibes from this serial. I'd be shocked if "I Am Your Soldier" wasn't a direct callback to "I Am Your Servant".
KC reviews It was.
And a pretty clumsy, ham-fisted callback at that.
Victory of the Daleks was basically a watered down Power of the Daleks.
@@Mr_BunkYou're just saying that to complain grow up
@@jwwprod3862And a way to give the daleks A standing Empire, so we didn't. Have to do that.
Hey look here's the last dalek Just joking here's an entire army of them
That was literally the plot three out of four seasons Of r t d
Love Ben. He's one of the most underrated companions, and Michael Craze was super-cute.
I long wanted this story in either novel form or video; I was thrilled when they brought out the video. Thanks for the review!
I have several of the novels, and I don't believe that Ben was useless.
A lot of people don't really like the recreations animation style, but this was what sold me on it. The way they animated the Daleks elevated it even further than the original story. All the production flubs and 60's charm is gone, leaving just an alien life-form that's impossible to read.
I watched this last night, and I loved it, I found the 2nd doctor actually made me laugh out loud quite a few times
1:00 "Power of the Daleks no longer exists"
How do you know that? Just because it is missing from the BBC archive, that doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't exist.
Over to you, Mr Morris...
Considering how long it’s been missing, it‘s probably safe to assume that it’s been lost to the ravages of time forever
@@EditedAF987 not true, the lost episodes exist in the mole people's archives
I love the power of the daleks the animated version is the way to experience it
"Ben? Polly? Come meet the Daleks" in a frightened tone. Patrick Troughton captured that scene very well.
I just had to work on the subtitles for this on Britbox, and the episodes are in colour. Fantastic story! Happy to see your review
“It can do anything that’s necessary, but the thing it does most efficiently, is that they exterminate human beings! It destroys them, without mercy, without conscious! It destroys them, utterly, completely!! It DESTROYS them!!”
Years ago, I purchased a book that included the script and existing telesnaps for this story at a convention. Read it and loved it. It's been one of the top five stories I wish would return to the archives complete. The animation is good and if that's the only way to experience it, it will have to do. I love how manipulative the Daleks are and how they play the humans to seize power. Using some of the musical cues from the original Daleks is a nice touch.
Best post regeneration story in my humble opinion
I loved how mocking the Daleks sounded whenever they pretended to be subservient.
I saw this story and it was fantastic!
Lucky you then! What are your initial thoughts on Fury from the Deep back when it transmitted?
10:21 I swear during that sequence that I can hear one Dalek going "EXTERMINERMINATE!" lol
This episode make me remember the 11th doctor first dalek story
I can't wait for Planet of The Daleks review. :)
"Why do Human Beings Kill Human Beings?"
That is.. Harrowing to say the last. The utter confusion in the Dalek's voice is unsettling, considering what they're like inside. But it also says a lot about us, too.
Anyone know if the Dalek Movies will be covered? Ik they were in the trailer for Dalekcember, so I can hope!
Christmas Day!
@@MrTARDIS sweet! Very much looking forward to more Dalekcember!
I may have missed it, but where are they getting the extra Kaled mutants from? I can get the production line to make the Dalek shells, but not the operators. Were they tucked away in storage somewhere on the ship with the original two?
They birthed them themselves. It makes sense that Daleks would carry around their own progenitor units, their species craves survival after all
I believe it’s implied that they grow them from scratch, like plants but evil and with tentacles.
How about you do Cybermanuary for January.
I agree!!
Great idea in fact I was going to suggest doing that. However I would call it CyberMarch.
@@royalewithcheese9291 Ha Ha Ha, That sounds great too.
The reason I love the power of the daleks is because It proves that not just William Hartnell can play doctor and Patrick Troughton can play doctor who and the doctor can regeneration into other actors and Patrick Troughton is amazing as the second Doctor he is my fourth favourite doctor who actor
Didnt mind Ben and Polly , the animated Daleks look totally real .
Unfortunately the Special Edition remaster isn’t available in the United States, so I was stuck with the original animation.
Oh my giddy-aunt, what it must have been like to have seen this episode when it first aired. What better way to show that this still the same Doctor by having him face his greatest enemy. You can definitely tell that Victory of the Daleks was heavily inspired by this story even going as far as recreating the whole "I am your servant scene".
royalewithcheese "Oh my giddy-aunt, what it must have been like to have seen this episode when it first aired."
I did see it when it first aired. In fact, I saw it three times in all...the original UK transmission in 1966, then twice more in Australia in 1967-68. Can anyone beat that?
@@Nuttybott Someone really needs to invent a time machine and save these episodes.
@@Nuttybott That must’ve been so cool to see it back then. I mean we kinda take Doctor Who for granted now, it’s almost always been there. But back then? It was something new, yk? Must’ve been something seeing it for the first time in the 60s.
Is this episode based you your intro for Dalekcember on
I love power of the daleks, it is my favourite Daley story!
“Why do human beings kill human beings?”
Ad: DelTaco
I adore this story.
Im heartbroken that most of the Troughton era series are missing. My three favourite series from the time were this one, The Evil Of The Daleks and The Tomb Of The Cybermen, which thankfully still exists and I have on DVD.
I appreciate that the animated reproductions are about the best we'll ever get, but the production line scene is disappointing in that the Dalek creatures are just tipped into the bottom half of the shell, whereas I'm sure they were placed in the top under the lid. This is borne out by the fact that in the fight scene in front of the Emperor Dalek at the end of The Evil Of The Daleks, one of the creatures is seen throbbing in its death throws at the top of the machine with the lid gone.
The Power of the Daleks will always be missing
Man, I wish they kept those shrinking/growing eyes on the Daleks after the transition away from the original costumes. It makes them look really sinister in that soulless-machine way they own despite not really being machines, especially the live-action version of that "law of the Daleks" close-up shot.
I am your ::forcefully:: servant.
Really wish I owned this serial in HD, I got the dvd for Christmas that year. The animation was really good but I cannot help but feel that I missed a trick.
Next time, Only three words I must say..
The Final End!
yes'
JamesTheBrony/JTB *coughs Until five years later.
I hope we get more animated episodes of the older stories
Evil of the Daleks most definitely deserves that treatment
@@crimsondynamo615 Fury from the Deep too. And the Abominable Snowmen. And... Actually all of them.
Jokke Mursula I’m honestly surprised it’s taken this long for some of these lost episodes to get animations. You would think they picked up on that a long time ago, but with the huge boost of sales of Shada, Power of the Daleks, and Macra Terror it’s making them realize that.
@@crimsondynamo615 Well, according to Wikipedia, the animated Fury from the Deep should be released this year.
Jokke Mursula awesooooome
Easily my favorite Dalek story ever. They are at their most sinister here. Smart, cunning, evil, and most importantly secretive. They have all the cards in their plungers and only the Doctor has enough sense to know what is going on.
Great Review I love Power David Whitaker writes Daleks better then Terry Nation in My opinion.
Power of the Daleks and Evil of the Daleks
Although I like terry nations dalek story’s but I really like this one
I keep expecting Archer to walk in from stage left
Dalek scheming. Lovely stuff. I've always found this animation a little hard to get past but you do a great job of making the story the focus. Definitely going to pick this dvd up.
Hi mr Tardis another masterful dissection if another mythical episode as a budding writter i take my advice from your video😆you are a natural born writter keep going🐯
Power of the Daleks is great!
Have yet to watch the animated version, and have only watched the loose cannon recon.
About Ben and Polly; yes, they're two of the least interesting companions to travel with the Doctor. Almost every other companion I can distinguish some characteristics about them, but not those two.
The animated version is excellent. Grab it on bluray if you can.
How does the full audio survive without the footage? How was these episode stored?
Long story short, film is expensive and difficult to store. So many shows were simply wiped so the BBC could re-use the film. Basically, archival was not a priority.
Some episodes survive because copies were sent abroad to other broadcasters but many of those were also wiped.
Audio survived because dedicated fans would literally put tape recorders to their TV sets and record the audio.
For Power of the Daleks, the footage of the Doctor, Ben and Polly discovering the Daleks covered in cobwebs survived because it was used for a trailer which survived being wiped.
Josh Snares has some great videos on his channel about all of this and the lost episodes. I recommend checking him out!
MrTARDISreviews This is a nitpick, as that was an otherwise brilliant tl;dr, but it wasn’t film that was wiped but tape, as all Doctor Who was shot on tape at the time (the first story to use film was Spearhead From Space, but even that was a one-off). Great video by the way! Loving this series! Don’t suppose we might see a similar series for the cybermen at some point, eh? I can’t think of a month based pun which isn’t Marchdas, and that’s terrible lmao
@@MrTARDISwait film?, thought doctor who was made on 2 inch video tape?
Some fans recorded the audio so they could listen to the show again. Back then they couldn't record the video and those episodes weren't aired again so listening to them was the only way to enjoy those stories other than the target novelizations which mostly came later.
I like Power of the Daleks
Didn’t enjoy this as much as you did, but maybe a rewatch will do the trick - you make a very strong case for it.
Also the Daleks in this story are so cold and manipulative compared to any other story. Except for Genesis which has elements.
Planet Vulcan? In 1966? Really, David Whitaker?
Probably an astounding coincidence.
Anyone else not gonna question that the planet is named Vulcan.....
Now we just need daleks
Pretty sure the low population of the colony can be attributed to (as most things can be) the show's low budget
I think the daleks were animated better than the other characters
Yeah they are
Yay this story is being rereleased with better animation
I don’t think the visual style of the animation works in this serial. Don’t get me wrong I adore this production and I’m glad it exists but I think the scene where the doctor discovers the daleks is a terrifically atmospheric visual scene in the original version but kinda looks a bit dull in the animation.
7:00 also does anyone notice the similarity to victory of the daleks when they keep saying I am your servant.
... how do you know that the scene where the Doctor discovers the Daleks is a terrifically atmospheric visual scene in the original version? Did you watch this in 1966?
Jack Christmas I saw the clip somewhere. It was one of the surviving bits.
Ah, OK then
@@Vegemite98 It's better than nothing though.
*Insert Snap song here*
Ben was useless but dishy to look at so... swings and roundabouts.
Just watching like: Wow, this animation looks so weird.
Ben was so annoying
