I read an interview of Pat reflecting on Lyle's contributions before his demise. He said Lyle had a good sense for guitar because he was a "very good" guitarist himself.
According to Pat, Lyle was actually a very good guitarist. Doesn’t surprise me, as Lyle was a man of many gifts: architect, software engineer, master of counterpoint. A voracious intellect. Truly missed.
This little number Pat leans into with the facial expressions and body language(hop/jump)foot movements tells you that even though he is physically present in the moment, his mind/soul are a long way from home and in another place(musically), and that is what makes him and the group so very special.
Pat Metheny has to go down as one of the greatest musicians in human history. I mean, talk about mastering an instrument on every possible level...!!! Amazing.
jeez this is HUGE this dropped in the middle of when drum and bass was exploding and pat heard it and took notice i had NO IDEA lyle played guitar man this is some heavy shit
Can I just say this is one of the COOLEST metheny tunes? I think I've listened to just about everything but NOTHING has utterly blown me away quite like how this does.
When we got this cd, my young son would request "#7 song" whenever we were in the car. I always thought it sounded like a noir detective thriller soundtrack.
I watched this episode when it first aired and I thought this was probably the greatest thing I have ever watched or listen to. I still feel the same, this changes my life everytime I watch it.
A melhor surpresa foi assitir/ouvir Lyle Mays tocando guitarra como poucos. R.I.P. Lyle Mays and Thank´s a lot for you contribution to world of the music.
when i first heard this song (and, "Follow Me"), it blew me away- i remember thinking, "this is the Pat Metheny Group?"...this song alone is a testament to the range of the group's (and Pat's) creativity...a brilliant album, and completely unlike anything they had done before...
Every instrument takes on an other worldly quality under the mastery of each of these musicians. They seem to have a symbiotic relationship in which their individual talents result in collective genius.
One of my fav albums I listened in my life, I remember being a kid at my gp house, my jazzman uncle making me listen to this and other artists and classical music to learn instruments and discover new things, and roots of coincidence being instantly my favorite song of this masterpiece. I wasn't into playing an instrument at these times but I love the jazz/heavy side of it and Pat Metheny was definitely an inspiration for when I first played guitar some years later.
Marvelous creativity and technical abilities displayed by Metheny and his fellow musicians. The way this piece moves from Jazz/Rock through to Contemporary Classical style is both breathtaking and compelling. Love it! And I never knew Lyle Mays could play guitar!
I was listening and still do sometimes metal music for more than 20 years and out of hundreds of bands that I’ve listened to I ended up listening to no more than 5 or 6 . The idea is that the vast majority of metal is just bad . My favorite metal band is Dissection with their second album.
I would get into this Hauling oversize loads to to New York during The Triboro Bridge widening construction project a decade ago, Hauling ass to the George Washington Bridge oversize holding area, then escorted across the G W Bridge, end the run, dropping the (section of the bridge load) at Ichan stadium parking lot. Love this! Never gets old! Already had this Metheny Masterpiece since I purchased it in 97, and Witnessed a never forget performance at The Strand Theatre, in York, Pa. Imaginary Day tour, What really topped it off, was Charlie Rich was with me at the PMG show at the strand, It surly doesn't get any better than this!
The drummer (who IS that guy BTW?) is playing with the exact same syncopated feel that Phil Collins uses in the latter part of the song "Inside Out" (from 1977). I love it.
Wow - Lyle's doing some serious shredding here - and I though he only did keyboards; I was obviously WAAAY off! I've been listening to PMG since the late 70's, so the first time I heard this, being used to a more mellow (NOT in a "smooth jazz" or MUZAK kinda way), flowing, layered sound, with a world music touch - especially with Brazilian flavored nuances - and instead being "assaulted" by this thrashing, heavy, industrial rock sound, it was kinda off-putting, but then the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me, and I realize how much of a musical genius Metheny actually is! This piece isn't necessarily one of my go-to Metheny numbers, but I've learned to really appreciate the complexity of the piece.
HOLY SHIT!!! Is that Metheny playing that UBER-HEAVY shit? Wow, I've never heard him playing ANYTHING like that from him before. Top of today's "to-do" list, hit record store and buy copy of Imaginary Day.
That is a phenomenal solo by Pat. We're lucky they recorded it and we can watch it here.
Pat's solo in this performance is among the best I've ever heard from any guitarist -- rock, jazz, or otherwise.
Its cool seeing Lyle Mays on Guitar
It's rock and roll Lyle Mays Love it

Not trying to cause a stir but ... "fans" like Pat, "musicians" dig Lyle. Not mutually exclusive camps tho of course.

No. Musicians dig Pat too.
@ESF: Touche. Two giants of the genre to be sure. My admiration for PM immense; my admiration for LM tho immense +1.

I like the whole tune but my favorite is the middle part.

R.I.P. Lyle Mays. His contributions to the Pat Metheny Group and to the music industry will be missed
One of Pat's rockinst of songs...and a Grammy Award for it to boot.

Pat's not only a brilliant musician but he's a fantastic composer as well.
Lyle Mays is ALL OVER this Composition, Lyle was into Rock as well as Classical, his contributions are very much over looked...
@@poisedforduty
True. I don't mean to take anything away from Lyle. But Pat is a fantastic composer by himself.
Of all the Metheny Group songs, this one is my favorite.
Saw this when it was broadcasted... And still fires up my blood flow and living cells all over my human architecture .
Ecouté milles fois mais toujours aussi bon !

Same here, I could not believe what I was hearing. I'd love to see him play this live
What a great composition. It's so Cinematic, so orchestral. Imaginary Day is just a great CD. Thanks Pat!

Saw this on PBS when it first aired back in the Stone Age, regretted not recording it on VHS tape. Thanks for the upload!
a masterpiece and outstanding group performance
I almost cried. This is fucking awesome
'' I'M STILL CRYING !!! ''
A perfect arrangement
Robert Fripp and the fellows from King Crimson are proud :)

I’m not sure how Pat feels about heavy metal music but he sure captured the spirit of it with this song. Such an eclectic hybrid !

If you can think of any music, Pat can do it with excellence. But Lyle Mays rockin too? Phenomenal.
The only time I've heard Pat's bands sound like Midnight Oil - and they cook it so well :)
while listening to this version, I rocked back and fourth like I do in church......OMG

Holy crap Lyle Mays is playing a guitar too? Wow! :)
They did this tune on the Speaking of Now Tour. And yes Lyle played the guitar.
One of my favorites. Awesome.
Yeah Man! This is like grabbin hold of a rocket ship! Woohoo!
This version is even better than the original, if that's even humanly possible.
This bass player is badass
Absolute brilliance cant get enough of this Pat truly is the master what a performance.and imo the best version and kickass audio
It’s all about that hit before he starts his solo
One of the best stuffs of Metheny
Blown away....
Masterwork!
actually the sickest thing ever ever heard just wish the recording was better this is incredible.
I keep thinking of Satriani's Engines of Creation when I hear this
Gotta imagine a guy like Steve Vai watching this with a broad smile...
Wow! :D Never heard this before. Didnt expect this mad song
I really love how it turns into a Gabriel-era Genesis song, about half way through the song. "Nice touch". ;-)
