SoR2 OST better but this is good/great
@@LavaCreeperPeople I disagree. SoR 2 is good, but SoR 1 is king. There's not a single filler track on this entire OST. The same cannot be said about SoR 2.

Maybe he doesn't do it anymore. Which would mean "was" is correct. or maybe he still does it but the standard is not of legendary status. But thank you for correcting everything. ❤ @@wehitextracellularidiombit4907

Yuzo Koshiro is a wizard. Those Genesis audio chips were pushed to their absolute pinnacle for the SoR games!

Wish he did the entire SoR4 OST
It is truly unbelievable for a game of 1991 to have such a sound and music!
13:21 Keep the Groovin is the main reason that I would rent this game at Blockbuster Video. Just so I could get to this stage and listen to the music.

The fire at 32:39 and 40:29 🔥🔥🔥
Absolute banger. Shows what the sound chip of the Genesis could really do in the right hands!
The SNES may have ultimately won due to a better, more expansively impressive gaming library. But music wise; I honestly think that the SEGA Megadrive/Genesis easily gave them competition from time to time!
From time to time. Exactly. The vast majority of snes soundtracks are better than megadrive ones.
@@Intrinseque52Can't agree with that completely. Yeah the SNES had many games that sounded better simply because the Genesis often had inexperienced people composing the music.
Overall though sound was usually heavily compressed and the sampling rate was often poor on SNES. Usually around half that of the Genesis. On one hand this saved cartridge space and allowed for more data in games. But consequently sound was muddy and not nearly as clear as the best Genesis games. But on TVs with mediocre built-in speakers most people couldn't hear a difference.
20 years later and the sound track still bops
28 years. I feel old, but this still feels fresh as the first time I experienced it.

Moon Beach ❤❤ Fond memories.
This… this right here is EXACTLY why I love the YM2612, the chip that gives the iconic FM synth on the Sega Genesis! When used well… IT… KICKS… ASS!!!!
Too bad so many Genesis games had terrible SFX and music due to being badly ported SNES games.
@@nicolashoareau5992- And people not understanding the hardware correctly, yeah.
In my honest opinion, this is one of, if not, the BEST franchise that Sega has created. The music is top-notch, being catchy, and conveying how the game is meant to be played: Fast-paced with confidence in your abilities. Hearing the title screen for the first time, I immediately fell in love with the game, and it's soundtrack. I would spend hours on end browsing the options just to listen to the soundtrack. The storyline is fairly simple, giving you the option to become the next syndicate boss, or to destroy the syndicate entirely. The characters of Adam, Axel, and Blaze are all great. I especially loved the little tid-bits they gave at the title opening, with Adam using boxing and his hobby being bonsai. It helped to give at least a small amount of life to the sprites on the screen. I may have nostalgia goggles on since I've played this game ever since I was born, but I still feel that if I had played this game for the first time in this present day, I would still love it as much as I did that first day I turned on my Genesis years ago. And if I said that I didn't tear up a bit the first time hearing the good ending theme, I would be a liar. No game has influenced my life as much as streets of rage has, and I have to give this game a perfect score of 10/10. Sega needs to bring this franchise back, with the same amount of effort and love that was put into Sonic Mania. Sega has a history of shitting out half-assed Sonic games (with the exception of mania), and neglecting the hundreds of franchises that they built upon during their golden years. Streets of Rage is a classic, and I consider this game to be in my personal game Hall of Fame. Yuzo Koshiro definitely made a masterpiece with this soundtrack. He still DJ's every now and then, playing his beloved soundtrack from SOR for the public. I would say being able to witness that is on the top of my bucket list, and always will be. There is nothing like it on this earth, and I doubt that there ever will be.
True sonic mania WAS the sonic game everybody waited two decades for. Ill be sure to pick it up and go through it on this channel in the future when i get organized soon with stuff. Streets of rage is one of my all time fav trilogys, they should do Streets of rage VR one day lol. THAT would be insane if they could think of a great way to do it..
im as nostalgic for streets of rage for you also. I LOVE streets of rage still until this day and have a greater love for JAPAN and those seeds it planted in me as a kid. hanging in Japan, Seeing YUZO Koshiro and the other game themes played live will be awesome and is defo on my to do list also.
Yeah I have to put Yuzo as my top composer for any songs, he just adds something that I have seen few composers do to a game.
Oh lol that would be hilarious. Maybe an online Streets of Rage, too? You could have like four people and you go through the first three games. Maybe even a fourth entity to the franchise would be awesome too.
LMAO that elevator / Lift level would be funny as hell playing with three others in VR or against the motor cycles or flying man on streets of rage 2. The end boss would be funny also with his machine gun and tryna jummp out the way and fight him with three mates lol.. Damn they should do that that would all be total gaming madness.
Yuzo Koshiro....the legend!
Legend indeed.
This game kicks so much ass. Top 5 sega game for sure. Soundtrack is also one of the best.
32:29 still one of the best boss theme ever, epic and funky at the same time, the tune makes you stress from the boss encounter and at the same time make you ecstatic. Masterwork.
could be put unedited in Hotline Miami and still sound fresh
Prime thanatos
I think Streets of Rage 2 Boss theme is better
Still such a great tune. As a kid who only had a NES back then, I was in total awe when I heard this at the first boss, playing it at a friend's house. You can hear the composer was also a lot into acid house/early house and other electro music which was rising at the time, which gave it attitude. Megadrive/Genesis CAN produce some solid tunes, if you put some effort to it, and in this case it totally payed off. This game along with Sonic really tested my loyalty towards Nintendo, lol.
I especially love the beginning. It really conveys that the real fight is starting!
26:09 Despite this awesome game has being released in 91, this track is a "message" from the 80's decade that fits the picture where everything was very close to perfection. The so called golden era of everything marked the transition of music, cinema, outfits and of course gaming! 16-bit machines were arriving, disco-pop and r&b were passing the torch to house music... everybody knew at that time a new ERA was about to begin, the 90's.
yeah 90's was EPIC! :-)
House, techno, dance, ect existed in the 80's underground, but didn't hit mainstream until about 1989.
Loved this game! My favourite level was level 7, the elevator level. Blaze was my main and I got a lot of satisfaction throwing the bad guys out of the elevator. The soundtrack was amazing
Violent Breathing is such a cool song :0
Glad to know at least 1 million other people had great experiences with this master piece
yuzo koshiro... ((round of applause))
When Attack of The Barbarian came on, u knew, shit just got real. 😂👏🏼 I was born ’95, so these songs r forever embedded. 💯
Beatnik on the ship, one of the funkiest and funniest tracks, what's not to enjoy this jolly little ditty of a tune😂
Epic soundtrack of my childhood!!! As listen to this all i can here in my head is the noise the character made when you did a flying kick.... Boooo yah!
this is a REALLY detailed and quality soundtrack considering it was made for a 16-bit cartridge!
Sega Genesis had a Yamaha-FM chip which could hold 8kb* of samples at low bitrate, on top of having an 8bit generator chip on the same system.
Mamadou Sissé-Yaré The low fidelity of the samples adds to the aesthetic. That “crunchy” sound is very evocative.
The Yamaha soundchip was a power house. Games really sounded almost identical to the arcade. At the time arcades were where all the cutting edge technology was put. You'd go out there and hope that when something dropped it would be good, with the Genesis sometimes the games were better.
cartridges have always and will always be a huge upgrade look at modern day graphics cards they can make a 10 year old dell play gta in ok settings
The cartridge of this game IIRC has a capacity of 8 MBit - that equates to 1 Megabyte (yes just one). It's sequel SoR 2 was one of the first games that came on a 16 MBit cart (2 Megabytes) - considering that, compression was something special in those days. Not like the lazy bloat programmers of today....
Yuzo Koshiro provided the gaming soundtrack of my life growing up! :)

One of the best video gaming soundtracks in my book.
Still one of the best and most groovy soundtrack of all.
The Last Soul is one of my favorite tracks in all videogames.

By far my number one favorite of the classic
Streets of Rage is one of the first games I've played on the Sega Genesis when I was a kid back. This is a gem.
Here because Streets of Rage is going to get a movie adaptation. Fingers crossed that it will be awesome. Have a great day! 😆
Just sayin:
Go in with very low expectations. If it's decent, cool. If it's good, cool. If it's booty-butt-cheeks garbage; no surprise whatsoever(videogame movies are often trash anyways, unfortunately).
Y'all have been warned beforehand;
Have a good one everybody.
@L'Homme De L'Ombre ( j'ai pas le temps pour toi ) whatever the case, y'all remember to just heed my friendly advice, in order to evade dissappointment ;).
Yuzo Koshiro was able to replicate the sounds of the Roland TR-808 and TR-909 drum machines, along with the Roland TB-303 bass synth, on the Mega Drive's Yamaha YM2612 sound chip. This was an incredible technical feat that made it possible to bring house and techno music to game consoles.
Tbh getting those drum sounds out of the YM2612 isn't terribly hard. The overall orchestration is the part that impresses me, it's hard to get such a full and balanced sound out of so few tracks with no real production tools to speak of.
It should be noted that the primary competitor to the Genesis, the SNES, had an 8-voice wavetable system providing its sound and music. The effect this had was that SNES games were easier to compose soundtracks for and more "realistic" sounds were attainable, but the SNES had a tendency to sound somewhat "muddy" compared to a well-produced Genesis soundtrack like the Streets of Rage series.

It was EPIC back in the day, this and sonic one were my first games. Also EA ice hockey and john madden football. Then Golden Axe II and road rash :-D
I skipped so many classes to play this game. I ended failing almost every course in middle school, but it was worth it!

😉😂🤣👍🏾
At the time, it felt like no other video game composer was taking on house, hip hop, metal and other influences into video game music. Maybe some of that was due to technology, but Yuzo was just fearless. As kids encountering this for the first time, music that reflected the community around us, it was just *vindicating*. It felt like such a clear line was drawn between the 80s and 90s with this soundtrack. This was the future.
They better use this soundtrack. It'll be written by Derek Kolstad from John Wick and it's in the works.
Wait, they’re making a movie about it?
They'd better get wrestler Brian Cage to play Max... he literally has wrestling tights that say 'Streets Of Cage' in the iconic Font 😉

This is so amazing, I remember beating the game when I was a kid. I am so happy I saw this.
Interesting Facts: Listen to all of these soundtrack again carefully (bearing in mind that SOR began in 1991) the soundtrack yuzo developed for SOR was actually ahead of its time because if you listen to it carefully you can actually make it out yourself that yuzo used a blend of swaggering house synths, and especially when it comes to combination because he combined electronic/funky style music which wasn't used before but his biggest influenced was actually he developed trance music which was synchronised beautifully, so overall SOR had a blend of swagger for each stage and continuously using electric and funky music togetherness and he also founded the early trance elements, he had developed something so new that it even had an impact on the music industry itself, because they were so mesmerized with his work, that's how gifted yuzo was, we all know he is a legend when it comes to music composing for games, but what people didnt realise is that his music had a massive and i mean a massive influence on the music industry, so every now and again when you watch a music video or listen a music song and you hear a certain instrument or a beat, you can bet you dollar that's yuzo music being used, may Yuzo live for 100 years but one thing for sure is that his music is going to be in existence forever
You was speaking with wisdom & thoughtful ! I've never listened him before playing this game on Megadrive many years ago. Now I realize his music soundtracks are imprinted in my memory for live. So 1.000 thanks to Yuzo Koshiro... I will never forget his name, promise !
Oh yeah for sure, you'll get people who were part of the grime/dub scene in the 90s and beyond saying they were influenced by Yuzos work.
Yuzo should adopt you as his son
It's insane how he composed this with such primitive hardware
