Herbs for A Summer Cold

- A summer cold can bring more misery than other kinds of colds. After working in the garden, I choose some herbs to make a remedy to stop the sniffles. Information in the box below.
If you are interested in using herbs for your health consider looking at the Hawthorn Academy -www.danusirish... or doing my Introduction to Herbal Medicine course www.danusirish...

Tea Recipe - For the beginning of a summer cold, some sniffles and sneezes, I took a small handful, about 2 teaspsoons of the following fresh herbs:
Thyme - (Thymus vulgaris) anti-viral, anti-microbial, expectorant
Catnip - (Nepata cataria) also known as Catmint - diaphoretic and astringent
Wild Marjoram - (Origanum vulgare) - diaphoretic, antiseptic, expectorant
I chopped up the herbs finely til they resembled tea leaves and infused them in hot water just off the boil. After 15 minutes of infusing, I drank a cup of this tea and finished off the pot during the rest of the afternoon. The cold was nipped in the bud and didn't develop.
Thanks for watching! Stay well xx
Oh Danu, I'm so sorry about your hen. I also have a Black Australorp named Miss Tilly, and although she isn't laying anymore she's a joy to have around...she's the equivalent of a "boss mare" in a herd of horses. I hurt when they pass away. Keep warm, rest and keep enjoying those beautiful herbal teas. You will be restored in no time!
I am fully restored thank you . Yes, we miss little Poppy, she had such a cheeky independent character. xx
Oh Terri, sorry to see you lost your beautiful Poppy. It’s sad when we loose any of our animals, pets. Hope you get over the sniffles and feel better. ❤️
YEs, it was sad Oana but she had a good life. Sniffles all gone and hope you are well too. xx
Great video with great tips on herbal teas. Sending blessings from a sunny but very cold Scotland 🏴
WE have had it cold too the last week or so but should be warming up this weekend xx
Thank you for such lovely videos every week! They are like a cure for soul and body and also I learn English from it. You have very calming and pleasant voice, very clear pronunciation and your manner of speaking is giving the feeling of presence as if I`m not a viewer but your guest offline.
Well said!
Aw!! thank you - delighted to hear that and I think all of the viewers are guests. xx
In Scotland we say "ne'er cast a clout until May is out", which means don't cast off your vest(s) until you see the hawthorn (May) blossoms out. Keep warm and get well soon, you've got some great herbal allies there.
That's right! When I was a kid I thought it meant until the end of May! Not much of a summer then😂. The herbal allies have been very helpful and sniffles all gone, very quickly xx
Loved how your pup was tilting her head like she was really listening!
She was listening. She is always trying to make sense of us😀
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Yes Terri , She actually made me laugh out loud and then show my Partner (don't tell our Cats hahhaha)
I've never thought about using catnip for tea. Thank you for that information. I planted some a couple of weeks ago so will look forward to making tea with it.
I'm going to have to "fight" my cat for fresh catnip! She won't touch it if it's dried.
I recommend it and it is so tasty too xx
Love this place we live In!!!!!!!!
Me too xx
Hope you feel better quickly.I don't plant beans out until late July I've learnt over the years the summer is too hot and we get our best crops the end of August/Sept.....🙃
Completely better, thanks Mary. xx
Thank you
I feel a bit of a cold coming on myself!
I hope you are all well ❤
I am completely recovered now - can't believe I cleared it so fast!
It is raining here in Quebec, Canada, I am sitting with my cat on me drinking coffee and looking at your video….You are my sunshine this morning, you reminds me that life is simple and beautiful when we are in relation with nature and all the necessary that earth give us to take care of ourself. So peaceful, I am a fan sine I discovered you. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledges and a piece of your life, so inspiring. I hope that you understand what I wrote because I am a french women…of 72 years old. God blessed you 💕💕🙏
I understand perfectly chère femme. Je parle un peu le français and your English est parfait. Merci beaucoup xx
Nice to see what you're doing around the place. You're a good month ahead of what is happening here as far as spring goes. Generally fruit, apples, plums, pears, cherries, etc. start blooming mid-May here. I do have pea seed and some potatoes in the ground now as well as a number of other vegetable varieties, spinach, broccoli, etc., seeded in rows. I love this time of year. It seems there is hope in the air once spring arrives. The other day I opened up a water box, a broken pipe needs repair, to find three rather dormant garden snakes curled up. I carefully moved those snakes to a spot along the garden fence since I doubt if they could have slithered out of the deep wooden box where they spent the winter. - - - Seeing you plant beans already is marvelous. Here we don't plant beans and squash out in the garden until mid-May. Hopefully this year May will be milder and less rainy than it was last year. Fruit crops here weren't the best due to cool wet May weather last year. - - - Like you I'm using those same herbs, they grow in my garden and yard, as you for medicinal tea. Out in the garden I've been digging up nettle roots, dandelion roots, washing them off, then drying those roots over the wood stove which is still burning at least some of the time. - - - Daffodils are just starting to bloom here and soon paper white narcissus will be glorious too. Spring is such a hopeful time. Out in the garden the other day, digging, I could hear swans out on the lake telling swan stories and singing swan songs. Enjoy your spring! Cheers!
So interesting how different plants pop up in a different sequence. Are the snakes poisonous? You are right, Spring is such a hopeful positive time. Here in Ireland we will celebrate the beginning of Summer on 1st May, all the trees will be in leaf shortly - it is such a gorgeous time. Good luck with your garden and your herbs xx
Good morning Terri, thank you for your video, so much to do at this time of year. 🌹 A soothing cuppa, a cosy chair, rest and care.
Hugs and Blessings.🌹💚
So much to do...but all worth it xx Like the sound of cuppa, chair, hugs and blessings😀
🌻🌷🌹
What a lovely old saying, old mother nature often catches us out & leaves us with a little reminder to adhere to the signs,❤
Yes She does. And first sign of sunshine - what do we do???😂
Thank you for sharing this I will try it.. I love your garden 🙏
Good 🌿 herbal

Thanks Theresa!
Poppy ❤ 🌟 Get well soon dear Terri
The tea sorted the sniffles - all well now thank you xx
Bless poppie ❤ for her life and service. Thank you for the health, art, soul ,😮and nature you share
Thanks Tacy - absolutely bless good old Poppy, glad she had a happy life with us.xx
Once the snow is gone I'm outside and easy to get chilled. My favorite remedy (along with a cup of tea) is a good hot bath! Pouring rain here today so I'll do inside chores.
Love the color you are painting the arbor. Have a good week and stay well. Blessings.
Blessings to you too Cynthia. A hot bath with lots of Epsom salts! Have a great week xx
Mom always said, "en avril, ne te découvres pas d'un fil" (in April, don't uncover by as much as a thread) and frankly, I still tell myself this when April feels warm.
Amazing! Mother's wisdom everywhere - same message of common sense😂
"Don't cast a clout till t' may's out" it's a good Yorkshire saying refering to the may tree not the month which is out (blossoms) in June.
When I was young I though it meant til the end of May!!😂
A rainy damp week here in Quebec, perfect for this! The French press is such a beautiful way to watch the medicine steep. Thank you for inviting me over for a little visit and inspiration each week. Are those Apple blossoms? Just Lovely.
So sorry you lost Poppy. Thank you for all you share
Thanks Saphen xx
I loved how you described how you respond to Thyme.🌿💚💚
I love the warning at the back door; "Do not install Smart Meter"! Wise words indeed!...😉...😉...! I love all the various Herbs and SpicesI which I include in my daily cooking, and I've recently discovered just how powerful the herb; "Thyme", is! Truly magical in Gravies, Stews, and Casseroles! Its effect is instantly noticeable upon the first taste! My Herb and Spice Pantry Is full to overflowing, ready for the next exciting meal!....😀...😀...! Take care, all..and be well!....😀...😀...!
I am a big fan of Thyme - I love it. Glad to hear your pantry is well stocked. All is well xx
Hello Terry love watching your garden come into bloom, along with the Bees! Thyme is Beautiful in tea, & Blessing to Poppy💜🕊🌹
Hiya Terri Thankyou enjoyed the visit. Blessings for Poppy. Same name as my Rescue Doberman who has probably snuck into my bed at the moment hmm
Hope your feeling better soon appreciate the tea remedy. Southern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🐝
Wonderful visit & I trust you’re feeling well after your herbal tea🤗💜🇨🇦
Instant recovery almost, thanks! xx
Thank you Terri! Your patch already looks amazing! Sorry you have the sniffles. A couple questions, First, is your liquid feed made only of fermented nettle, or did you add anything else? Also, is brewing a tea the only way to get the benefits of catnip, or simply the best way? Finally, I can tell you from experience that an wigwam-frame style trellis works very, very well for beans and peas, It seems to allow more air in amongst the plants, (it works wonderfully for wild roses and raspberries too😊). Cannot wait to see progress on your new wall. We send our condolences for the loss of your lovely hen, we know how easily we become attached to our 'ladies'.
Hi Jeff! sometimes I just use Nettles for a liquid feed and sometimes Comfrey and sometimes I use the two together. For Catnip, as my cold was just starting and was just a sniffle, tea is the best way to go. If I had a really bad cold/'flu I would take Catnip as a tincture as a tincture is a stronger medicine. thanks for the advice re wigwam for beans and thanks for the condolences, you are very kind xx
Fantastic video! Just recovering from a nasty chest cold here in Cape May, NJ USA after getting too overzealous with spring activities on our 16 acres by the sea. Everything is blooming here- dogwoods, willows, forsythias, wisteria and so much more! It was very warm but then suddenly chilly again and we put our hats away too soon! You are wonderful to watch and very inspiring! We will be implementing your many helpful tips in our upcoming gardens this year! 🌷💚🌞🐶🌻🐾🌿
Hi Stephen - good to hear from you and best wishes with all you do in your garden. We have the same blossoms here apart from Wisteria which doesn't survive the wind xx Our hats are still out - I learned my lesson😂
Great tips. I have learnt something today 😊 🌱
Glad it was helpful xx
Thank You for the Video Of Healing Herbs #HealingHerbs
Stay well Terry!💞💜
I am thank you. xx
Aw, sweet Polly ..💛
She has gone to chicken heaven after all her hard work and great entertainment we gained from her xx
Hope you are feeling a lot better after that lovely infusion, I just wanted to add that I love the garden fence colour, I have a colour called merry berry on my fence, which is a nice raspberry colour, brightens everything up. look forward to watching next week.
Yes, I also thought the fence looks good. It is a nice pop of colour.
Thanks! Glad you like the fence colour, a bit darker than I expected but once the flowers are out it will be nice. I am fully recovered, thank you xx
So sorry to hear about Poppy x
Thank you Cerridwen. She had a good life and a sudden death without any suffering xx
Have a wonderful week
I'm sorry your Polly has crossed the rainbow bridge, hoping you are both well and spring is coming.
WE are both fine thank you. Always a bit sad when an animal moves on, but life goes on xx

Hello from NZ . I love your easy approach to the no dig garden, herbs , and teas. Love your lifestyle . Thanks for sharing all your lotions , potions and remedies. Gonna watch them all again. I was in Ireland in 2018 and I swear it felt like , I've done a life time there, in your gorgeous country .
Hello Tracy - glad to hear you enjoyed your holiday in Ireland and glad to hear you are enjoying the channel xx
The saying is for the Mayflower to be in bloom, so I heard about 10 years ago, I always thought it was the month of May before this and I think this makes more sense as the weather has to be a certain temperature for the Mayflower to bloom. Thanks for sharing with us today Terri, this is 3 months after you recorded this video, so I know you are better as seen your next lot of videos.
Thank you for all your knowledge! I love learning all the old remedies from time past! God Bless and Prayers for your health
Me too - constant learning as you never get to know everything. Blessings to you too xx
I hope you are feeling better, Terri.
Thank you Lisa - was fine by next day xx
Hi Terri!
Thank you for another video with a wonderful Tea recipe. Your gardens are looking good. Love your kitty. So sorry for your loss with Poppy. I just lost my Henietta recently. Last of my Orpingtons. Such a sweet breed.
It is always sad when one is lost xx
Ashante! Nice to hear from another Wild Stinging Nettles and Dandelion Lover....you gave me New Knowledge on Nettles that I didn't already know...Thanks!
You have been so inspiring to make remedies for different illnesses! I was able to cure my stomach infection after being inspired by your cures for different illnesses using herbs!
Glad you are feeling better xx
Thank you for this tea tip, and r.i.p Poppy
Hope it works as well for you. xx Poppy is in chicken heaven i'm sure xx
Hope you caught the developing sniffles in time! Loved the way you described the tea. Always enjoy seeing the furry and feathered babies. Sorry you lost your Polly
Bon voyage, Poppy! And thank you.
Many thanks to Poppy for all her tasty eggs xx
Thankyou for your lovely films 💚
You're absolutely fab! Such harmonious life, authentic presence, interesting helpful instruction, and a green photographer to feature your offerings. Thank you Danu.
Thank you so much. xx
Hi Terri, try steaming your head over a bowl of hot water with rosemary. It too is anti viral and hopefully the steam will get to the nasty bugs in the back of your nose. Works for me. Hope you feel better soon x
Great idea and I would do if it was bad, but was just sniffles and the tea cleared it quickly. Thanks xx
Great idea 👍🏽 but be mindful, anyone who suffers from epilepsy seizures should avoid rosemary oils, even in shampoo's/room fragrances etc as it can trigger a seizure. My daughter suffers, and I even had to change shampoos, and also had to stop hanging a bunch of bruised rosemary under the bath tap when planning a good old soak 😞 😊
Exquisite guitar playing 🥰
That was Lol - so glad you enjoyed it. xx
We say in Scotland 'Nair cast a cloot till May is oot'! Thank you sharing your wonderful recipes. Best wishes to all xx
Brilliant - our elders had wisdom and common sense. Someone commented with a French version too - up above. xx
Be well, Terri! You are a beautiful inspiration!
Thanks - all back to normal now , cold didn't linger xx
Another lovely video, you are so busy. What a lovely time of year for you. It feels like it's gone straight into winter here. I'm picking Thyme and making all the potions from your past video and also going through your winter is coming videos. This year I will be prepared as feel it's going to be a long one. Take care xx
I hope it is not too bad Ness. Great idea to be prepared. Did you get my last email about the VQ? Did you do it?
Thank you for your perfect timing of this video.
I Do have sniffing and it has moved deeply into my lungs now.
I am having Thyme liquid extract and Ivy leaf extract.
My wife is rubbing on essential oils.
Having mint and Nettle tea.
Peace to you
Thank you for teaching people to love our mother Earth and her creatures great and small ❤
You will be feeling good in no time with all those wonderful remedies. Peace blessings to you too and hope you have a speedy recovery xx
Thank you always for sharing your wisdom ❤
You re welcome - hope it helps you xx
Thank You . Don't forget , a little Whiskey . Mom would give us some with honey . And some for her to .
Definitely - just before bed - works a treat. xx
I didn't know that you can use catnip like that. I thought it's an ornamental plant. Thank you very much 🌱👍I'm continuously growing more herbs in my garden. Today I was looking for some herbs against my cold. I used what I had at hand. Thyme, calendula and camomile.
Catnip is wonderful for reducing fevers, very good for children. Hope you are over your cold xx
@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Yes, thank you very much. The herbs are a big help. Have a nice weekend.
Love your films. I'm loving finding out about nature's medicinal cupboard. Thank you.
RIP Poppy. I had a black Orpington hen also called poppy. Xx
I have a vixen called Poppy. She's one of my rescues.
Poor Poppy, it was so sudden but it was quick. We miss her cheeky personality. xx

I am 100% again now thank you. The sun is so warm and tempting and then the wind hits and it is chilly. Typical spring weather. Thanks for your condolences xx
Take care my friend! Have a great week. The tea looked so good.
The tea was good and I am all better. Have a great week yourself xx
That's great, I use comfrey steeped in water as a natural fertilizer
Yes, me too. You could even use grass cuttings but I prefer Comfrey and Nettles xx
Th weather fluctuates a lot and I put away my woollens - need them again - lovely tea recipe and love your little garden! Also love the way Loel injects the animal and flower vignettes into the film and the guitar - soothingly & kindly. ❤
So glad you enjoy the films Lois, thank you.
Same here - hence the chills.😂 I think Lol does a great job, thank you I will tell him of your comment xx
What a cutie pie that doggy is at the end of this video 🐕what a joy to see his adorable head tilts I hope to get another dog again in the future to have around👍 Thanks again for these informative and joyous videos
I have a long way to go to get herbs growing. With just moving in and onto our property last October, I am now getting my raised beds put together and my herb container together and all out of storage. There was nothing on the property when we bought it. Since then, we have had a house put on, a well and septic system installed. April here is still cool and rainy. I've started tomatoes and leeks. I plan on getting peas started.
Good luck and best wishes with your endeavours xx
Hello there Terri, Hello all your beautiful creatures too.and those girls. Im sorry that those niggles of sniffles are at you,I hope and pray that with your herbal tea they will whisp away. Soon as able.?oh you have done well out in the garden, its looking gorgeous i love all seasons but lovely to see all the shades of green s everywhere. Delightful. Blossoms and insects beautiful music, so worth looking forward too.thankyou so much for all the Jane teaching s you give Terri and feel wellx, enjoy Sunday, hugs and love from me and my girls, oh yes thyme is my favourite, well one of my many favourites. Agh yes ,I tell all my family and friends about not o cast a clout until May is out,,your channel, films fit me like a glove 😊😊. Thanks so much, bye for now, xxxxx
Hi Hetty, you are right, all the seasons are lovely but especially May time and we are nearly there. Sniffles all gone thanks. Have a lovely week yourself xx
My mum used to say that saying😂we lived in Lancs, I'm in Ireland years. I'm hoping to do a herb garden this year, seedlings doing well but I'm looking for ideas when they go outside for easy access herb garden having arthritic knees finding it a bit daunting as got a lot to go out. Would you take us on a tour of your herb garden with what each plant is and if it needs a bigger space ie a raised bed or a tub/pot etc if you are looking for ideas for videos that is💖🦋🌼🐕🐕🐈⬛🌱🌿
I can do that. All my beds are raised which can make it easier for anyone with arthritic knees. I don't have arthritis and beds are raised just because that is the way I like to work, but the higher they are the easier it would be for you. xx
I have never tried making tea like this but will give it a try now you have inspired me to give it a go, thank you. i love seeing your home and dogs.
Thank you - hope you enjoy your tea xx
Dear Terri, hope you feel better soon, thanks for sharing,Blessings and Greetings from Daggy,Kiel,Germany☘☘☘next week I am in Dublin.............

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden Surely ❤️
Thank you so much Terri for sharing, I will make this tomorrow as I did the same in the garden, stripped off and got a founder lol. Don't cast a clout to May goes out my late dad always said. Sorry about your hen, I lost one of mine two weeks ago, she was 6 years old and just old. X
Poor old hen. Ours was about three - not sure what happened her. I have learned my lesson about stripping off too early xx
Thank you Terri and Lol for the beautiful video. I've copied the tea recipe, and have it safely in my book of tea recipes. R.I.P. to your beautiful lady.
Thanks Karen. Hope the recipe helps you too,xx
Thank you for the tea tips. Your herb garden is looking glorious. Take care dear lady. 🙏❤️🌱
Thanks Leslie - and yes the garden is coming back xx
❤thank you foe the great information. I love your videos.
We love planting peas (and strawberries) up on our balcony so when our four year old grandson is over he gets fresh snacks! We have thyme in a pot but I am going to look out for catnip and marjoram to add to our deck herb garden 🌿🪴🥰 Hope your sniffles pass quickly!!
Great idea for his fresh snacks. My sniffles disappeared after two cups - I got the tea just in time xx
Feel well soon ❤
Already am thanks to the tea and thank you for your kindness xx
Lovely video. Love the garden flowers, just beautiful and the sounds of the bumble bees . Your videos are so comforting and relaxing to watch. You are amazing. 💐Thank you so much. Have a Blessed Day🙏🏻
So happy to hear that you are enjoying the videos xx
Love Your garden
And like the natural tea with time !!
Yes my Nana who lived in Scotland always told me Don’t shed a Clout till May is out. And seems it’s even colder in the South of England than it was in Scotland back then …we don’t seem to get so much of the Sunshine now. Thankyou Terri..love yoyr vdeos full of wonderful advice…I’m just making some
Pine Needle Tea this morning first time wish me luck. Lol 👍😅 ❤️🌻🌹☘️
Enjoy - it is very tasty!
Thank you for sharing these videos, they're so grounding and full of useful and inspiring information! I just re-found you after enjoying your Weed Handbooks for several years now, such a good resource. Blessings!
very relaxing video, thank you 👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it. xx
So helpful to hear/see these 3 herbs can help "a cold"- catmint, thyme and marjoram. Wow. I only planted catmint for my cats, who did not touch it; perhaps catnip would have been a better choice.
Really like the short videos. Easy to relisten to. Cheers on a rainy day from America.
Glad you enjoyed the videos. Catnip is Catmint. xx
Thankyou 😊💚🌳🌻🐝🦋🦉🙏🧙♂️💕
You are very welcome Sean xx
Thank you Terri for another lovely video. Take care. See you next week!
Thanks for watching . Have a good week Susan xx
Thank you for this recipe. I will try it.
Most welcome 😊 xx
Thank you for the great tips x
You're welcome! xx
Thank you!!! ❤
You're welcome. Thanks for watching xx
Didn't have any fresh herbs, but I used dried Herbes de Provence which worked well!
Perfect.
Thank you so much for this Terri. I have read up to “N”, nettles so not reached Plantain yet. We have loads of it round the field, so guess what I’m doing this morning! The nettle tea yesterday definitely helped take the edge off the cold, hopefully the plantain will zap the nasal congestion.
Love your teaching. I shall be sharing your UA-cam channel with friends who will benefit too.
Many, many thanks x
Great to hear you are working your way through the book and putting it into practice. I am confident the Plantain will help any nasal congestion. xx
Lovely video as always, I never miss them now on a Sunday 🙌 so inspiring, thank you 🙏🧚💞
Thanks so much Monica - glad you are there each week xx
Another lovely video! Now, for some fresh herb tea from my garden!
Sounds great! Enjoy xx
Very nice to see how we use herbs so similarly in different countries. I've just got over a really bad cold with the help of similar teas. Greetings from Spain😊🌿
Greetings Mari. It is fascinating to discover how people use herbs from place to place. xx
Oh no, sorry to hear about Poppy. It sounds like she had a great life living in your garden. I hope your cold didn’t materialise into anything too bad. Don’t forget to take some rest to help your body recover. I’ve been fending off a cold this week with double doses of fire cider vinegar and a garlic and rosemary chest rub I made back in the winter. See you in next week’s video.
Poppy had a great life, she was very independent and cheeky and died suddenly so it wasn't dragged out. I am totally fine now - the tea saved me. Your dosing is great choice too. xx
Hope you feel better soon. RIP Poppy. Blessings xx
Thanks Jamie - I'm fine again now. Blessings to you too. xx
