We bought Ender from a couple who specifically breed cattle dogs and the Texas Heeler was highly recommended to us by them after hearing about our small hobby farm and animals.
He’s without a doubt, the absolute BEST dog I’ve ever had! Ridiculously smart, insanely loyal, very lovable, somewhat sneaky (sometimes) and he’s great with my kids.
I couldn’t give a higher recommendation to this breed. Buyer beware, these pups need plenty of exercise. If you’re not there active type, consider a different breed.

Best dog we’ve ever had! Loved by all who meet her. She was my running partner for 5+yrs and always kept up with me 3-8 miles 3xs a week. At 9 1/2 she has slowed way down and is experiencing arthritis. She’s no longer running but daily walks keep her happy She is so sweet, loyal, likes to please, affectionate and great w/kids.

We just got 6w old Australian shepherd, Australian cattle dog mix and the shes lightning a smart, has learn basic commands like sit, down, stay, paw etc in only a few days of having her. But her nipping instinct and desire is so strong im worried she will be to much. I have small children and no type of correction seems to make her listen when it comes to nipping . She is very strong willed at only 6w old. I am a new dog owner and open to any insight or lessons anyone is willing to share about cattle dogs. I really want to make it work but I am concerned about being able to make her a good family dog.

Moderate exercise is false. My boy needs 3 walks a day minimum of 2 miles or he’s outta control. He will go until you stop though. Climbs rocks, walks across streams on downed trees , fetches. Best mans man dog. Nothing extra. No need to look tough. He is tough. He puts pit bulls and other shepherds in their corners. He is the best dog ever!!!! He doesn’t like to sit and watch TV soooo if you do please please look elsewhere.

Sounds like a great dog! Yes, each dog's exercise needs may be different, as Texas Heelers are usually known to be an energetic breed.

Play fetch with him for an hour before walks. Most walls actually don't get them to use up the energy like fetch will. My dog adapted to me being color blind and actually will search for the tennis balls for when I can't find them. Teach nose work and other games and use the brain up more. You gotta work both to keep these dogs happy.

My Australian cattle blue heeler/ Australian Shephard is 5 months old, he was quite a mess at first, but he's been getting training and is doing so much better, I love him so much and he loves me, he's very smart , without the training I probably wouldn't have been able to keep him, im so glad that didn't happen, I wouldn't trade him for nothing now
Love my Texas Heeler ❤ Bandit

So I have one that just came as a rescue from my neighbor, so I’ve known her since she was a pup. Neighbor lost their house, poof I have another dog. I have two cats and two other dogs, and the only issue is chasing cats- but she doesn’t want to hurt them, she is just trying to keep them in the living room. She does NOT want to be outside, only to potty or play in the pool. She is a couch potato and is kennel trained. Thank you for this info on her breed 💙💙

The "breed" hasn't been stabilised. Therefore, it is not a true breed.

They are common in Florida, but only recently have I heard them referred to as Texas Heelers. I just called them Ozzie/Heeler mixes. They tended to look more like Australian Shepherds but their behavior is pure Heeler with all the feral behavior that is instinctive to them.

    • @bradyma4

Yo, son of Thom. The Scotts and the English never stabilized (with a "z") either. What exactly does that make you? Obviously not a true breed...or a spelling bee award recipient.
      Thanks for the keen observation

Correct. They are an F-1 cross. To become a breed there would have to be some inbreeding so that they are consistent in their conformation, etc.

Blue Heeler and Red Heeler are just the names of the only two color variants of Australian Cattle Dogs.

I got my boy almost a year ago. He is 1 now and I couldn't see my life without him. He is my right hand man. Every morning we are playing fetch for at least two hours. Then when I have a migraine he goes into work mode and does his job well. My boy is mainly white with a few blue and red spots. His ears are the most interesting the base are stiff but the tips are floppy. He can make them stand up at times 1 or literally both. He has BOTH herding traits from each side. Love it so much.

That red puppy at 2:22 looks like my new girl. Yeah, she was sold to me as a Red Heeler but the admixture of Australian Shepherd is pretty obvious. But she is smart and energetic as any purebred ACD.

I love my Aussie Shepherd-Blue Heeler mix. Highly intelligent, loyal and very protective. Very energetic, so if you are a couch potato, you might want to select another breed.

Thanks for sharing! Sounds like you have a wonderful dog. Yes, we completely agree, these breeds are not suited for couch potatoes, and need an active family.

The smartest dog that I have ever worked was one of these. Unfortunately, he was also one of the problematic. He never bonded to me like my other dogs have done.

mine is so smart it is scary and bonded to me like Velcro and only me. She is actually becoming a bit of a celerity in these parts. I take her to the dog park pretty often all the women love her and want to pet her but she will have no part of it lol. I told her one day " come on you gotta take one for the team ,we can't pick up no chicks like this" she replied that she was the only chick I needed lol

They're just called border heelers, why is 'Texas' appropriating our dog!?
