The BMW M5 with a V10 engine is already a modern classic and with the chance of a naturally aspirated V10 M car looking unlikely to ever appear again, this is almost certain to become a future classic.

Thanks for a great review and buyer’s guide. My 2006 E60 M5 has been with the family for over 10 years. Your summary of potential issues is accurate, and indeed most have been experienced with our M5 during ownership. It has challenged the wallet on occasion and sometimes we question our sanity. It’s still parked outside though and we continue to love the car.

About the e92, was the timing chain thing been improved or nearly fixed in the 2011 to 2013 models?

@madhunter6420 we have done a separate buyers guide for the E92 M3, link below, the bearings were changed in 2011, these are considered an improvement but from our research some owners (albeit a smaller proportion) still had issues 👍

Apologies, our mistake, we though you were asking about the connecting rod issue on the M3. The E90/E92 with 2.0d and 2.0I engines had a timing chain issue until 2010. A revision in 2010 (2011 model year) was a big improvements and reduced failures BUT didn't entirely resolve it. The 3.0 engines and the early 2.5 did not have this problem 👍

@@themilesdriven The 2.5 and 3.0 dont have any of those issues? Which were the most reliable years of 2.5 and 3.0, and for 2.0 engine which i guess it was called n47, year 2013 was the best?
