Brilliant writing. Fine performances from Harry H Corbett and Wilfred Bramble in each and every episode. The acting from the two lovable rag and bone men was second to none.
Harry H Corbett looks really good here in a sharp suit. World's apart from the cloth cap, heavy herringbone overcoat and Wellington boots he wore in the Steptoe series. As well as the genius writing and fine acting, the wardrobe department were great with their choice of clothes for the ever popular rag and bone men.
The rare interview to one side for a moment, they were sitting with an Australian "rag and bone man", with his horse and cart. A piece of Australian history. Young, and not so young people - this is the ultimate in "reduce, reuse and recycling". The transport has changed, but we're still about.
The show was one of, if not, the best comedies ever. Its an oversimplification to say simply 'sitcom' or 'comedy show'. It was social commentary, class observation, the complexities of the father and son relationship and so much more, and thats just the script, before you even get into how perfect Corbett and Bramble were.
I just realised - they filmed this in South Melbourne. They start off in Coventry street, head west towards and just past the market then turn left into Walsh street (narrow with terraces) then turn left again into Dorcas street.
Steptoe & Son remains a classic even to this day,....it was hilariously funny, and was wonderfully scripted,...and the acting was brilliant and the show was arguably Britain's greatest ever sitcom.....
@@mercuryrising4323 Each to his own. Leonard Rossiter was outstanding as Rigsby and Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnet, Ronnie Barker in Porridge and David Jason as Delboy. I personally would always put Steptoe in the top slot. You either laughed or cried with them. Harry is some 9,000 miles plus away from London here and yet, when the music comes in at the end, you are immediately transported back to Shepherd's Bush.
Not as great as Hancock, Till Death Us Do Part, The Office, and of course Fawlty Towers, but Steptoe was great too. Remember if Hancock hadn't dumped Simpson and Galton there would be no Steptoe.
@@toothumbs Comedy is a personal choice. We all like different. I thought Fawlty Towers was funny but didn't run for very long whereas Steptoe had a seven year life span in all. I thought Hancock was good when he was with Sid James. They were an excellent pairing. Without James, the series seemed to go a bit pear shaped and the comedy somewhat contrived. I thought Wilfred Bramble and Harry H Corbett brought home what a craft acting is. Whilst well known actors often had cameo parts in Steptoe, Harry and Wilfred were always the real stars of each episode.
Love this man so much he laughed was just brilliant his whole energy. Yes he did leave this life way too early. My birthday is the day before Harry. I’m 58 now and sadly he passed age 57 so young to leave this World but what a legacy he left.always thought he was a handsome man
Harry H Corbett He wanted to do so much more and it is a known fact that he was a victim of his own success with steptoe & son that he couldn't branch out to play other roles . He was a classical actor .

steptoe & screaming will live forever...... the problem for Corbett was that he wanted to be remembered for other things... the nature of the biz tho !
Why any remake of "Steptoe and Son" will never work without either Wilfrid or Harry. Same with both Ray Galton and Alan Simpson also gone! Can you name any other series, (especially sitcoms) where the actors, writers and situations all work so perfectly?

Poor Harry had such a hard time in Australia the "old man's" drinking problems and temper problems made it a nightmare, and well and truly ended any idea that they'd work together again. You can see the whole Australian tour story in the documentary, it used to be on UA-cam but I can't find it now, it's actually sad to watch.
10 years later he'd die of a heart attack... If only his life hadn't been so full of stress. I read that he died a very bitter and somewhat resentful man because he felt he could have achieved so much more with his life but he got type-cast as a Steptoe. It must have been so stressful for him to be constantly asked about the character he longed to escape...
That explains why they mentioned bottle-o owners don't give the public anything for their empty bottles and cans. Victoria's never had recycling deposits on bottles and cans. Here in South Australia we get 10c back for every bottle, can, carton, etc.
Wrong title, this is son of step toe and son interview. Not Harry corbet, he's a right snob in real life, and here he's merely playing a character not himself

@Cindy Jayes he never said that he hated playing steptoe I just get the feeling he loved the character maybe at the end he got tired of it but he went to Australia to play steptoe and made some records as Harold steptoe. And years later he made a coffee commercial as Albert steptoe and in the interview he rode a horse and cart!!! And Wilfred brambell was not a pedo so I think you don't know what you are on about Cindy jayes !!!
