  • Lois Weber was an American trailblazer for females in the film industry as an actress, director, producer, and company owner. She produced and stared in this piece “Suspense” (playing the mother with child). In 1916 she was the first woman admitted into the Motion Picture Director Association.
In this film notice Weber’s use of high angle shots, split-screen editing, and the choreography for the chase scene. All of these things were ahead of their time.

That was more cinematic than I expected. Weber was ahead of her time.

Thanks a lot, Maime! If you had stayed this never would've happened. Maybe if TV or podcasts had been around you wouldn't have been so bored. Quite surprised the housewife/mother is wearing such an old-fashioned head covering---thought they'd gone out of style by the arrival of this era.

This is an excellent example of the beginning of film language in action!

wonderful, the shots using the rear view mirror. Note its a wide angle mirror like many modern ones. I wonder if this kind of mirror shot originated with this movie. Also, the shot from above showing the villain's face, remarkable and very effective. What a piece of genius work.

If anyone’s wondering, the first piece used is Tchaikovsky’s Aveu Passionné in E Minor. Definitely threw me for a loop at those first few notes, wasn’t expecting this piece to be used in a silent film!!

I've been watching movies for almost 60 years and thought I was relatively knowledgable about their history and yet I've never heard of Ms. Weber until 20 minutes ago. What a damn shame.

I remember as a child in the 90’s getting ready to drive a cross town to drop my sister off one late sunday night.. but got so captivated by a silent film that we said “f it” and watched the whole thing.. then left at midnight.. it was one of the rare moments my father broke the rules
