Fun fact: Black Cross Army was the name of the villain faction from Himitsu Sentai Goranger, another Ishinomori work.
And instead of a Nazi disguised as a penguin, it was led by a man in Klansman robes.
Didn't Shotaro Ishinomori himself (when he was still alive) cameo in 1992's "Shin Kamen Rider: Prologue"?
I think that was him as one of the scientists working in the laboratory in the very beginning of the movie.
1960’s Cyborg 009: two sort of non-serial movies and a closely spinoff tv series.
Disco City Pop Cyborg 009: a soft reboot tv series and a closely related sort of non-serial spinoff movie.
Dang this was great, I loved this show and found the team to be genuinely interesting characters, can’t wait to watch more of this!
This was spectacular dude.
8:50 as someone who researched and watch alot of looney tunes shorts in every era, this is suprising to me see this obscure short slip under my radar
*Tho probably for the best*
I'm grateful you are making this series, Cyborg 009 is my favorite anime and I absolutely love the story. Ishinomori was such an amazing author
Absolutely one of my favorite series and creators. It was nothing less than revolutionary.
oh this is so exciting!!!!! Cyborg 009 is one of my favorite series of all time, and I'm really only familiar with the 2001 anime I grew up on back when the English dub was airing on CN (and I just recently bought/watched the Discotek release of all the episodes remastered). I've found bits and pieces of people comparing and contrasting the newer anime with the older ones, as well as the manga, but nothing as in-depth as what this seems like it will be. So I'm very much looking forward to more!!! It's such an underrated series and something I think every single human being should watch!!!
Loved the 2001 version that came on Toonami. I always loved the way it looked with it retro style, but still had the slick digital paint.
yeah i need to see it i loved the 2003 astro boy anime and this looks similar being a reboot of a classic series
Excellent start, super excited to see this whole series breakdown!
Thanks for showing that subtitles for the 1968 and 1979 series exist. Sorry I lost my original translated Substation Alpha scripts so we'll just have to settle for VHS captures of the 1979 series.
I remember the 2000's series from when I was a kid once I found out it had a Blu Ray release I had to get it
THANK YOU FOR GIVING CYBORG 009 THE LOVE IT DESERVES I AM VERY EXCITED AND HAVE SUBBED ☺
A lot of great videos to come. I look forward to the manga comparisons.
Excited about this, as your content is pretty nice and informs pretty well and Cyborg 009 is a series that I want to get more into, as I am reading the manga that is indeed pretty nice.
Good luck!
Funny you post this as I'm re-watching Kikaider the animation and I was thinking about re-watching 009 too. I've only seen the Toonami / Adult Swim dubs.
Kikaider 001 the Animation has both its Original and Second Masters in Japanese. In fact, I actually prefer the remaster over the first because of Naoyuki Konno’s much larger involvement in the latter’s making, mostly due to the former’s animation being both glaringly off model and made mostly without the character designer’s careful permission.
Ironically, the second master still desperately needs a good English dub featuring survivors of the cast from both the first 001 master and its prequel.
4:00: Penguins aside, did you know that the Black Cross Army is also the name of the villain organization from Himitsu Sentai Goranger? (A.K.A. The first Super Sentai season)
Btw, is the show itself any good? I seen some clips from it, and thought it would be interesting.
@@AAAAAA-hv5qp You mean Goranger?
@@spencermanning9994 yeah. First super sentai. What else could i mean in that context...
@@AAAAAA-hv5qp Sorry, I was also wondering if you were talking about Cyborg 009. I haven't watched all of Goranger, so I can't say if it's good or not (you know, for 70's standards), but if it's the first season, I guess it must be good. If not, I'd recommend seasons like Liveman or Jetman or Dairanger.
@@spencermanning9994 thanks for the reccomendations.
I remember the 1979 series it was showen on UHF channel 47 on Saturday evening in NEW York City after that channels Spanish programing would end and Japanese programs would come on . There where no subtitles but I still watched. The last anime that I remember that came on but stopped about halfway through the series was Queen Millennia .
It's been 3 years since i know about this Anime but yet to finish the 2001 anime, since I only watch CoJ, Devilman Crossover and Re:Cyborg.
It's one of my Favorite superhero anime. Every characters has tragic backstory (i like it since it was made before it's a Cliche) and the diversity amongst the cast.
This was an excellent video. Glad i discovered this channel.
Something tells me this is going to be fun!
really man thank you for this series, i'm exited for more
just finished the 2001 as my first cyborg 009 series. it was great, a little off at times cuz it was a kids show but it got me really interested
Love Cyborg 009, in Sweden they are cult classics, much because of the dubbing which was special to say the least.
the man who also made super sentai and kamen rider!!!! you can see his direct work influence with the characters, design and weapons
Oh my god, I completely forgot that toonami trailer/advert/whatever until you played it. Now that's a nostalgia trip!
Having Ohnuki Taeko's song in the background makes this video so much better❤
I'm a sucker for all things retro, so I loved the Too name series. I've recently been binge watching your videos for obvious reasons. You've inspired me to start reading the 62 manga. Ishinomori truly was a trailblazer.
Dude I really appreciate your efforts on this video, I adore the series !
This will be goood!
I remember watching this on Cartoon Network and being instantly captivated.
Years later i would finally go on to rewatch the 2001 series and read every manga that had been translated up to Gods War.
Great video
Have you read the God’s War arc yet? It’s brutal, really upped the amount of gore. The original light novel was even more gory than the manga. I’m talking dismemberment galore.
@@calebgoodman3028 i read the manga yeah
Great video. I'm tearing up. Cyborg 009 is my favorite anime. The 2001 show.
As a black man myself seeing 008 in his original blackface design really puts a bad taste but I understand that the creator probably had the best intentions and probably didnt have any ill will towards africians. thats why as a kid i loved the 2000s version a lot, 008 was my black panther before the movie, and it was beautifully done and one of my favourite episodes in the show personally. I dont know but i feel loke some of it is ignorance to the davt that the depoction was really hurtful and part because of the creators artsyle
Good at least your not trying to cancel the guy.
@@nathanielduncan4692 I mean, whats the point of canceling him now? (I dont even know if hes alive still) its a thing of the past that was ignorant yes, but the wrings were righted in the 2000's and even better a cool story/backstory to suit
@@slipipipi7971 he's been dead for years
It's because of the language barrier, it used to happen a lot in Japanese media. He most probably simply thought that it was a common way to portray black people, he basically had an image and ignored all the history behind it because he had no clue. From this perspective they are a very naive culture, but then again, a lot of their genius comes from them being naive.
@@nicksothep8472 Thats pretty valid, i mean to a lot of the west the depiction of 006 can be seen as offensive now but it was just how he wanted to depict his characters.
Even Walt Disney's own father disapproved him pursuing art.
Most intresting.
You deserve more subs.
Excellent video.
you can see the astro boy influence in their designs i wonder if there ever was a crossover
Shotaro Ishinomori was one of Tezuka’s many former assistants.
@@SlapstickGenius23 oh yeah
black cross army!!?? they fought both the gorengers and the 00 cyborgs!!??
(probably not)
9:00 ...Why does 008 look like a Muppet?!
Song at 8:11? It could be Sunshower but I think I'm wrong.
Summer Connection but I believe Sunshower was the name of the album
Hello,i am from Brazil and i need to say Thank you for make this vídeo, i am a young and desinformated fan of too munch mangás of the gold age and videos like that shows me a way to see the things how i like (Sugestion ,make a vídeo of Babel Ni-sei,Another classic, and sorry if i write something wrong)
Cyborg 009 is beautiful
I like cyborg 009 2001 it's the best. 😀👍
Great video! By the way, what's the music in the beginning?
What did you think? Cyborg 009 could even get a full adaptation in this years?
Vou te oferecer uma nova informação.
Os personagens são ninjas.
Ok got in idea about the next ep what if the ghosts of Pearl Harbor come back to blow up Pearl Harbor . Business guy brilliant that won’t piss off nobody 🤣
Shotaro Ishinomori 0:02 where please find animation see
Neat!
There’s sonic x in 9:30.
10:50 That voice almost sounds like Optimus Prime.
It is, it’s Peter Cullen
@@MercuryFalcon Really!? Man, Cullen just can’t stay away from robots huh?
@@oliverklinton7164 he did those types of ads for a lot of shows that aired on Toonami.
@@MercuryFalcon Very interesting. I’m a big fan of Cullen so thanks for the information. Great video by the way.
Sonic said shit? Lmaoooo
Since I have Van Vogt on the mind, here’s something that I always wondered. Is his name Klaus Van Vogt or is it Alucard Van Vogt? I’ve got the 2001 adaptation telling me it’s Klaus and I’ve got the Skull Man anime telling me it’s Alucard. So which is it?
He's only ever called Van Vgot in the 009 manga. Skull Man came up with the name Alucard Van Vogt, but the name Klaus Van Vogt was made up for the 2001 Sony English dub. I believe he is referred to as Van Vogt Kancho at some point which literally just means Director Van Vogt and Sony decided to adapt it into the name Klaus Van Vogt if I had to guess where it came from.
@@MercuryFalcon gotcha. Thanks a bunch.
Where did you get that clip of the 1968 series.
Shotaro Ishinomori where 0:04 name find
Come here after dragon ball super: super hero
Hey what's song you played at 2:20 - 7:00?
Were the norse gods also cyborgs?
yee
Aren't there 52 episodes?
51 including the 3 episodes adapting the Gods War arc but those aren’t canon to the rest of the series
Love this show. Shame all the spin-offs since the 2001 anime have been pretty mediocre.
Agree with the exception of Cyborg 009 VS Devilman which had the same director as the 2001 anime
Van Vogt is a reference to American SF legend Alfred Van Vogt
In short, he was Japan's Jim Shooter
How is Jim Shooter compared to Ishinomori?
