Ah yes. Cyborg 009. By far one of the most well known series of all time. A series that has spawned a HUGE line of reboots and reiterations throughout time. And therefore spawning a huge legacy that's still going strong to this day.
The SKULLMAN anime is a direct prequel series to the CYBORG 009 series from the 2000s, featuring the origin of Black Ghost and concluding with the birth of Joe.
2001 adaptation was what we got here in India back around in 2004 on Sony's Indian TV channel and Animax It was one of the first anime I ever watched (along with Pokémon)
Its Top Quality anime reviews like this that makes you my favorite anime reviewer. Great work. I was passively interested in the franchise since it looked like Tezuka's work till I found out it wasn't but still had some interest. Such history and differences between works/adaptations really fascinates me. Such shame with the Gods War Arc, even as a non fan I'm like wtf hahaha.... Hearing about that was probably the most WTF thing I heard in a year. Definitely looking forwards to your next vid like this one.
Aye nice to see someone giving Cyborg 009 some love. When I was a kid there were only four animes I had watched: DBZ, Astro Boy 1980 and 2003 and the 2001 anime. I rewatched that a few years ago and it’s still pretty good. I remember seeing a bit of the Greek Gods Arc and a little bit of the Mutant Warriors Arc.
This anime needs to have a reboot. I see as one of the best animes or could be the best animes right next to My Hero Academia or Naruto. I still love and care for these cyborgs and they deserve to have a reboot. And it should be based on the 2001 series. They should get better and they should be more recognized. They're pretty awesome, cool, unique, and emotional. They should get more better these days. So I hope they get a reboot series and continue on with their stories.
They have a fine adaption already with the 2001 adaption directed by Jun Kawagoe. If he was contacted again to do one that’d be cool since he has a history of making good adaptions of old properties or making new stories based on them. Not sure who else would be a good fit to direct such a project
@@Xeno-The-Wanderer Yeah and this could be pretty awesome for the cyborgs. Like it has everything like sci-fi and superheroes. And they have heart and character depth. This could be an amazing in the right hands, I think this guy is something to talk to about. But a reboot would be awesome.
I didn't know how Ishimori's son bastardize the Cyborgs in the God Wars arc but ReCyborg 009 made me think that the creators of that movie didn't understand the Cyborgs and bastardize them and split them up for no real reason with some philosophical baloney. The Call of Justice adaptation wasn't that good as well. It did used the team stuff seldomly which is an improvement from ReCyborg but not much better. I thought 009-1 was a totally different series. Cyborg 009 vs Devilman was a cool crossover with some of the best animated fights but it needed more Devilman stuff but I was a fan of both so it was very cool for me to see. If you like the 2001 anime, you should check out the Kikaider anime series and its OVAs. It has a very similar artstyle which was pretty cool. Anyways, thanks for the review.
This is very useful, it's a bit confusing knowing what to watch when there are multiple Movies, TV shows and Manga, thanks Bob. My only experience with the franchise is through the Devilman crossover, but Cyborg 009 did look interesting from what little I took away from it.
009 is not pure Japanese. He is portrayed as a Japanese and American Caucasian mixed race. Perhaps one of many mixed race children abandoned by US GI fathers.
This series is similar to what I used to draw from my imagination as a kid, especially the cyborgs' red outfits and scarves, if I had watched it back then I would've become a diehard fan, too bad I only watched it a few years ago (or maybe it's for the best, considering the final arc). Great review as always, I like how you go into every detail about the franchise without spoiling much of it, most reviews nowadays are either rants or hypes and don't bother informing you of anything useful.
I think the god of war manga was not made out of hate, I read so many comics like this from the 90's that made to prof they are muture and dark.... Adding unneeded death r*pe and edgyness to prof the point, we are not foor kids we are adults. And some ways that prof to me they are so childish
Great and very informative video Bob, and yeah you're right the toenail clippings do leave a bad after taste. Have you seen The Skull Man anime from 2007? Highly recommend it, a dark reimagining of one of Ishinomori's characters with a very intriguing mystery, with many nods and easter eggs to his other works.
I have only ever seen the 1980s anime movie and I remember liking it, I do remember they copped out a bit regarding the ending with one character, I also remember thinking it was sort of slow, but it kind of picked up when they got to the alien planet, I only watched it mainly because I view watching anime movies based on multimedia franchises to be the quickest way into those franchises, kind of like watching live action superhero movies as a quick way to get into western superhero comics and the characters the movies are based on. That and I just randomly found it browsing an anime website looking for a random anime movie to watch. As for the rest of the franchise, I will certainly watch the 70s and 00s show especially the latter, I have a weird soft for 70s, 80s and 00s anime. The 00s show has been on my radar for some time, it looks like my kind of thing. The dub for the later episodes of the 00s series got finished a few years ago. The CGI Cyborg 009 I sort of want to watch because I have yet another soft spot but for Kenji Kamiyama. All though that dude really seems to have a hard on for CGI anime. That manga written by the author's son sounds like a weird everybody died Tomino ending of sorts but done waaaay worse. I am interested in your Devilman eventual video, I really like the first 5 volumes of the manga, but Crybaby is well...mostly kind of sucks. Wondering if anything else Devilman related is any good, there was this apparently really good OVA that had a terrible and infamous dub.
I actually think the same about Crybaby compared to the manga and the 2 OVAs of the 80s (not dubbed). I don't really recommend the dub for the 2001 series as it kinda censors certain themes at times and the voice acting were a little lackluster to be frank but you can do what you want.
I didn't realize how underdeveloped 006 was until you pointed it out tbh. I should have noticed because I'm Chinese. Maybe it's because he's a comic relief? Because I hope it isn't because of Japanese racism towards Chinese people, cus that would be really ironic. I'll give ishinomori the benefit of the doubt
Hard to say. I feel like 008 was just ignorantly following American racist stereotypes instead of anything malicious. However, I wonder why they have Vietnam, American, and African issues, but ignore the cultural revolution.
@@bobsamurai possible arc idea for a new adaptation? I hope lol. 006 is one of my favorite characters especially when he's with 007, them together are some of my favorite parts of the 2001 anime
I'm an "old" fan of the 1979 series. I'm currently (slowly) giving the 2001 series a second chance, since I apparently dropped it just as it was about to move beyond the formulaic format I found so tiring at the time. As far as the more recent OVA style entries go, I found 009 Re:Cyborg to be fart-sniffing garbage (crude, I know) that only really made a good music video for the cover of the 1979 opening theme. Cyborg 009: Call of Justice was better, but still not particularly good, as it also tried to be really clever about the series' lore and failed at it. Cyborg 009 vs Devilman, though? I ate that up. Felt it did both franchises justice, but still easily works even if you're only a fan of one or the other.
Oh wow God's War really is atrocious. The fact that there's a subplot about Gilmore forcing Ishinomori, who's on his death bed, to finish his story just makes this manga a lot creepier. At least there's 1 good thing that spawned out of this mess, and that's Kamen Rider Agito. I'm gonna need some eye bleach after reading this atrocity so hopefully the Devilman crossover delivers
That epic opera music just make go in acceleration mod one of all time favourites anime the realistic life crisis used in this show why I loved watching anime ever since my early childhood that music stuck in my head same go's to grandizer ua-cam.com/video/J8MzzVoSA8U/v-deo.html
Watch the Skullman first then the 2001 Cyborg 009. Skull background fixed
Good call. Idk why I didn't do that for this video. I'll pin your comment so other can see

@bobsamurai Thanks!! I'm trying to make a Superhero story about a Cyborg and needed more references!!
I only seen parts of the 2001 series back when it was airing on Adult Swim/Toonami but never got to see it all. Really should go back to this series
I've read the whole manga around two years ago. I didn't know they animated this old manga.

I recommend 009 God’s War manga. It is the equivalent of Go Nagai’s work, another 60’s manga author legend.
It was catastrophically bad to me. It was like watching your lifelong best friend be beat up by his parents, frankly.

This should get a live action treatment...just as long as Disney doesn't lay it's 4-fingered mitts on the IP
Take a look at the standard of quality in the last few 009 entries I cover here and imagine a live-action adaptation wouldn't live up to half of that
