Thanks for the great review of the Ruger LCP MAX. I've had the LCP II in 380 acp since it was first introduced, finding the only drawback being limited 6 round capacity. Recently I picked up the LCP MAX and have both 10 and 12 round mags. That with the addition of the Tritium front sight means it blows away earlier versions of the LCP>

I searched high and low for ECD. I Pocket carry in a very secure carbon fiber holster that will almost eject off with a flick of the thumb … after the 12+1 is fully out of my pocket.
It’s so compact and lightweight that I often almost forget it’s ready to go in mere seconds… should that dreaded day come. Pray that it won’t ever be needed, but not naive either😊

I've watched the various reviews on this pistol since it came out. I own the original model Kel-Tec P3AT (or as I say, the gun Ruger copied). I was liking what Ruger did, however with the LCPII. I'm reallhy liking this LCP Max but have been curious as to it's life expectancy. My Kel-Tec has had WAY more rounds through it than they probably figured, but still, maybe 1,000? The take-down pin now tries to work its way out. I "fixed" that but retired it from carry. I hear the original LCP did that too (again, copy). I heard the LCPII was more durable and now I know from your experience that I can expect pretty decent life from the Max. I'm not trading in my Kahr CW380 just yet but I'm feeling better about recommending the Max to a few folks looking for a pocket sized .380 -- again, great work as always!

I just bought one. I had been carrying my original LCP, alternating with a snubbie and a Glock 26. The max is a major upgrade in trigger, as well as sights and capacity. I shift it better immediately. I tried hard to make it fail with a weak grip and it only failed when I held it upside down weak hand with two fingers.
Watching you shoot I have a couple of suggestions.
One is to bend your knees.
I was taught to clench the off hand fist when shooting one handed. This creates sympathetic strength.
Also it looks to me like your strong hand thumb was completely off the gun. I understand why you might do this if you got your thumb on the slide lock once.

The trigger safety is a drop safety. If the pistol is dropped in a muzzle-up configuration, the tabe prevents the trigger moving rearward and, on its own inertia, releasing the sear. It has nothing to do with ensuring a solid trigger pull being needed to fire.

Ive read so many reviews that are fantastic about both this gun and about rugers customer service, Im really leaning towards this for my daily ccw. But I’m also finding a decent amount of people who seem to have trouble with rounds failing or issues with the magazine.
I’ve narrowed my choices down to this or a xd9 subcompact. With the Xd9 I can’t seem to find a single person who has any negatives even with years of carry + 1000+ rounds through it , I know it’ll be a little bulkier to conceal and that’s why I’m very interested in this Lcp max.

The supplied factory holster that came with my LCP Max is way too floppy for my liking. About half the time it slips out the pocket still on the gun and then to get to the trigger , it requires off hand help.
That delay is way too dangerous for my liking. The kydex holster kicks off with the on hand thumb and I can eject the Max either inside my pocket or outside on the way to aim.
Either way , a single hand draw and fire is paramount for me … I have to use a cane in my off hand and the holster is as critical as the gun if not more so.

I can't check with mine since I shoot at an indoor range, and cannot get at the spent shells in front of the firing line. I might standing farther back to see if some of the shells land where I can sweep them up to inspect them.

@@professorpewpuew From what spent shells I lookd at (to check on pin drag on the primer), I don't remember seeing dented mouths on the spent shells. It was something someone else here complained about. I'm also experiencing ejection issues. When a live round is in the barrel, and I cycle back the slide to eject the round with the magazine removed (to fully empty the handgun), one of 2 issues happen. One is the round jams in the chamber. I cannot pull the slide further back, because the round is jammed. I have to keep trying to cycle, or push on the round into the chamber while pulling back. The other problem is the round doesn't eject at all. Doesn't get pulled out of the barrel. I have to pull back the slide, and keep jiggling the handgun to get the round to fall out of the barrel which then falls down the magazine well inside the handle. Seems the ejector hook isn't pulling out the round. The ejector hook looks sharp. No deformation or wear. Since my handgun experiences the failure to cycle into full battery (the slide is about a 1/4" back, and has to be pushed forward to go into full battery), perhaps the problem is the ejector isn't fully snapping past the lip at the back of the round to latch onto it. If shells are getting ejected properly could be why their mouths are getting deformed by hitting the ejection port.
Note that when I rack the slide to eject a round, I have to be VERY fast on yanking back the slide. On other handguns, I can be moderate to even slow to get the round ejected. On my LCP Max, I have to be very fast, and even then I sometimes get the round stuck in the ejection port (back end of shell hitting back end of ejection port, and bullet tip jammed against barrel). The best but not 100% method is to rack very quickly. Rack normal or slow and the round gets stuck, or doesn't get pulled out of the barrel.

Most HPs in this gun are a waste of money, because with its short barrel not enough velocity is generated for the rounds to expand as designed. If you can find some HPs made for short-barrelled guns, great, but they tend to be pricey. Because of the relatively low fps of rounds fired from this gun, over-penetration is not a great concern, so FMJs are a viable carry option (and there is something to be said for carrying the same ammo you target-practice with).

    • @professorpewpuew
      @professorpewpuew  Рік тому +2

The Max is definitely going to be lighter than the 365, obviously. It is marginally heavier than the original LCP empty. When loaded fully, it is markedly heavier. The slightly wider grip didn't beat my hand as much as the original narrow LCP grip does. The twelve-round magazines are particularly useful to get a full firing grip. I think the Max will be more forgiving.

Great video. 1000 rounds is an enormous amount in a pocket pistol. I've got about the same in my LCPII with 0 malfunctions firing all sorts of hollow points, FMJ and some Underwood Extreme Defenders. You can see the difference in control between the original and the Max in your video. The extra width and length of the grip gives a more secure grip with less tendency to twist. I noticed a difference going from my original LCP to the LCPII I have. Little differences in grip width and length make a big difference when shooting. However, for me the Max is just too big in the grip. It's actually larger in thickness than my Diamondback DB9 Gen4 and in the DB9 I have 9mm +P. Even when I compare the DB9 to my LCPII there isn't really a reason for me to carry the LCPII anymore. While the DB9 is slightly longer, height wise they're about identical and the DB9 grip is thinner. The downside is felt recoil. The LCPII isn't that bad to shoot for 50-75 rounds. The DB9 is just plain nasty with +P 124 HST. A few mags and your hand is going to know recoil.

Years ago, it was considered marginal. Not bad but not good. That might be because it was never a service or duty cartridge here in the US and more at home in pocket guns. I have a bunch of ammo testing videos on 380. Some loads are certainly better than others, but 380 is definitely a viable choice especially if you want something small. The only real issue I had with the old LCPs and other small 380s is that they can certainly malfunction if you don't get a textbook grip on it before you start shooting or shooting from an awkward position. As a 30 yr foam earplug user I would be remiss if I didn't let you know that you MIGHT not be getting the full protection they can offer. It's an invasive feeling but ideally you will roll them between your thumb and fingers to reduce their diameter, wrap the arm opposite the ear you are inserting the plug into around the back of your head and pull your ear upwards. This will open your ear canal and allow the (now compressed) tube to be inserted deeper. In a few moments the foam will expand to fill the cavity and the sounds around you will fade away.
Disregard if you already do this, it looked like one of your plugs was out pretty far. Found a quick video: ua-cam.com/video/pN_-2mFtgjs/v-deo.html
