- Cod Fishing and Fossil Hunting on the Yorkshire Coast | The Fish Locker
Shore fishing for cod on the North Yorkshire coast is at its best in the winter months. Today we fish a rough ground shore mark near Whitby on the North Yorkshire Jurassic Coast, explaining the rigs and showing how to bait up with cart. Not ideal fishing conditions we just enjoy a day on the shore. Combing the area and finding hundreds of amazing fossilised creatures from the Jurassic period 180 million years ago. Ammonites, Bellomites and fascinating rock formations. A few fish, some enjoyable time out on the coast and some winter sunshine. What more could you ask for?

I normally don't comment, but I'm a student about to go into ecology, and your passion when explaining things makes me feel like I'm just a kid again, being fascinated by nature. Had a rough childhood and your channel is a great comfort, seeing you lovingly interact with James heals my inner child, honestly. Much love and thank you for your content, you are an amazing person and a great father
Well said Iulia, I've had some similar experiences to you I suspect, but couldn't agree more how delightful and comforting to watch a happy wholesome family 💜
We each and all have our angels and our demons. One of the things I have learned and which guides me is; the parent you had is not nearly as important as the parent you are. Take care and have a wonderful day. 💙
@@TheFishLocker I totally agree with this. I would add that with the lack of overall leadership governing our lands, plan B for us folk on ground level, is to look after those seeking info and help. YT is a great community space for maths, language, science, history, geography and technology. I love learning about gardening eco friendly. Foraging for food that was once classed as a poor person food but is actually good for you.
Samphire is a good one. The cross of Asparagus and Horse mere. Up market restaurants are now driving the price up on this cheaper alternative to asparagus. It is more tender and smaller and more readily available in wetlands areas.
I also i like learning about history in an equal setting. Whilst we cannot change the past, we should use the unveiled information to educate people better.
I am too from a broken home but during my time i educated myself in my diverse journey. Lets just say not everything is black and white
John - Those are some beautiful fossil specimens and there are folks that will argue about the Earth's age. Hmm...
@@AnyKeyLady well said! Bless you!!! be well from Louisiana
Come for the fishing, stay for the geology and paleontology education. Well done, John.
I hope folks enjoy the variation in content. 😊

Another great video. Didn’t realise another name for Rocking was a slug. Am a bit further north and call them Greenback Eels. Always leave you’re rig knackered
That is one of the more pleasant names for them. 🤣
Two of my most favourite things cod fishing and fossils
Win win. 😬😬
@@TheFishLocker keep up the good work matey
i can't decide what i like more..the fishing or the fossils..aahh what the heck they were both nice...
That was most days for us as kids. 😊
Real intriguing John right up my street brilliant .All the very best 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🏴🏴🏴
Glad you enjoyed it mate. 😊👍🏻
now that's really awesome ...where I live we have a lot of shale our fossils are usually ferns
They are so cool to see when you get a really good one aren't they. 😊
Very interesting indeed 180 million years old it’s difficult to comprehend those time scales
It's such a massive number that your brain can't even comprehend it.
Welcome back home in Yorkshire. Always enjoy watching your vids especially of our coast. Yes I'm a Yorkshire man and proud one too ✊
You should be proud mate. 😉👍🏻
Hi John, That video was very interesting especially the fossil finds.
We found some corkers. 😊👍🏻
my son is at college, the tv is all MINE, haha, huge smart tv, to watch Fishlocker on, hehe😊😊💪💪

What a fantastic piece of the British coastline and so many fossils. Maybe not catching many fish but what a wonderful way to spend time by the sea fishing and fossil hunting
Fishing conditions just weren’t right, but we still had a lovely time.
The absolute beauty of the area took my breath away! You explained perfectly the way we look to surf fish off the North Carolina coast. Your fishing partner today was EPIC!!! What a great place to bring the family, especially having Tom there to explain the lay of the layers. Very cool video Sir! Thank you for taking us along!
Tom and I have been friends for several years brought about by a shared love of fishing and the outdoors. We will be doing more videos together for sure. 😊👍🏻
Hi there The Fish Locker. What a beautiful Yorkshire morning to start your day on the Yorkshire coastline. A perfect way to make this year 2022 a successful year 😊😉.

Hi mr fish locker. My younger brother and I are a big fan of your videos. We watch you every day. I just wanted to tell you that the larger ammonite you found is called a hildoceras ammonite ;)

I am glad that you enjoyed joining us John. 😊
Thanks so much for sharing your day with us. SO very interesting, seeing the fossils and beauiful coastline.
You made me miss Yorkshire all over again. We were stationed there for 8 years. Loved it.
Yorkshire is a special place isn't it. 😊💙
Thanks for that great tip on water craft, never would have thought about that. Will give that a look next time I'm out fishing. Thanks!
I hope it helps you find some fish. 😉👍🏻
Love that area, just one hell of a drive from the south west
I was actually on my way home. 😉
@@TheFishLocker On the bright side, it's downhill all the way ;-)
A beautiful, fascinating day all around. As you so effectively demonstrate, fishing is not always about the fish. Like other commenters, your day with Tom on the coast of Yorkshire took me back to my youth, when I spent countless hours exploring the cliffs, rocks, and fishing on the coast of Rhode Island, here in the States. Thank you, John.
Fishing is sometimes just the excuse we need to take us to these places. 😉
Fossils and fishing!!! All it needed was Haze and it would have been the best video ever!
I did speak to him when I was up there. We will be meeting up at some point. 😊👍🏻
Oh my gosh. Bucket list place. I’m saving money for our family to come here. This is unreal. Thank you so much. ❤. Many hugs and Much love to you all
Matthew sums it up beautifully for me too John. Watched the first bit with my mouth open in wonderment! Don't get me wrong - VERY familiar with coastlines, cliffs etc but... what an education in those few early minutes. My thanks to both you and Tom for that. James will LOVE it! ;-)
He was so excited when I showed him the fossils. 😊
@@TheFishLocker I bet he was!!! Now he has a dream for the next few months ;-) Wonderful.
Awesome video as always John. Been great to catch up on the videos after my phone packed up on Xmas day
You’ve had some good ones to catch up on then. 😉👍🏻
I have enjoyed them all 😀
Nice to see you gone back to your home area , enjoyed the video , pity you never found some jet . ,🙂
I’ve never done well for jet up that end. More south side of Whitby for that.
That was really good John, was amazed with what you were pointing out in the rocks. More of that would be great
Tom and I have plans to do loads more stuff like this when it’s not negative degrees Celsius. 🤣🤣🥶

Happy Sunday!!! Looks chilly chilly!!
Chilly but fine. 😊
Evolution of ammonites is amazing. Yiu can age them by the suture lines. The more complex the younger they are. Lived for about 400 million years and more closely related to squid, cuttlefish than todays nautilus. The largest were over 2m! Amazing.
They are incredible aren’t they.
To: The Fish Locker - They are indeed! You may already know that the bodies remained in the outer shell of the new growth and that the separation of the previous 'sutures' follows the 'Golden Ratio', otherwise known as a 'Fibonnaci sequence'.
Ha,ha! i could be described as an 'old fossil' since as a human it is something that we possess too.
I remember the good old days beach combing at flamborough head, end of north marine road as a kid, all up Whitby and filey, yes to live rite on the end near south landing at flamborough, I can remember having tea at the table and the light house flashing on the back wall of the dinette whilst eating, ow man I miss those days so much. This post brought back some good old memories for me John lad, some good old memories indeed. I remember hearing the 3 bangs signaling the RNLI guys and fella next door would run out jump in his car and head for north landing on the end of north marine road flamborough and me and my grandad would follow and see them off. I remember as a kid also use to spend many many hours on thornwick bay just looking for washed up bits , I called it treasure as a kid but now I think it’s called pollution🧐🤷🏼♂️. I remember my ever first fishing trip out to sea, it was 33 years ago on a boat called ( Rachel Kay ) from bridlington Harbour ) it was freezing and foggy but loved absolutely every minor it, believe it or not the boat is still there in use in the harbour today,!!. I caught my first ever fish , a place, and it was in the pan with some butter a few hours later👍,,,always appreciate your hard work and editing hours a day John and all and always look forward to the next post, best wishes to you and family and all 👍🤝🇬🇧👨🏻🍳
Sounds like happy times.
Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you very much David 😊
Brilliant thanks for the real insights to your local grounds and me and my daughter who is 4 loved the fossil hunting she kept saying look daddy Mr Locker found a dinosaur 😀
Haha. Thats so sweet. James absolutely loved the little fossils I brought home for him. 😊
The geology was as interesting add on to the fishing, great vid
I think that type of stuff is fascinating
You are most welcome to send some of that weather to us. Cape Town was hot as hell the past 3 days 😁
Don’t you dare!!! I’ve been shivering for a week!! 🤣🥶
Not only do we get a cracking educational video on fishing we also get a lesson on Geology! Love it.. 👍👍

A fascinating insight as to what can be found on the coast.
I am glad you found the video interesting mate. 👍🏻🎣
that nodule he broke at 21:03 was a piece of flint. really good quality too from the look of it.
The nodules are incredibly hard aren't they. 😊
7:00 Wow! You took me right back to 1974 and made me feel like a 9-year-old again when I recall my late mother took me and my brother on holiday to the South coast and we went fossil hunting. It was a simple joy that only cost that of a hammer and a bit of petrol and we spent several hours searching. I had completely forgotten about this and it came straight back to me. I think the UK is uniquely blessed (despite its small size) with fossils, and the fact you can find them on a fairly average walk is quite amazing.
We do have a very unique topography 😊
John, David Something said it all! Thanks for another greT video....looking forward to another great year of videos! 👏
It is our pleasure John. Best wishes and take care. 😊
Saltwick bay just south of Whitby is another great place for fossil hunting, especially in the shale at the north of the bay, loads of Belemnites and Ammonites. As well as Jet.
I know the place well. 😊
Great vid really enjoyed watching as always cheers john 👍
My pleasure Andrew. 😊
I am gutted, me and my mate drove past you and the other bloke unpacking the gear, we were looking for a place to fish as well! We had just came from runswick bay but caught nothing so we headed back to Whitby. I thought I recognized you! Glad you had fun fishing up here though. All the best mate.
Haha. No way. Small world isn't it!!! 🤣

Haha. I am glad you have such faith. Lets hope I can carry on raising the bar. 😊
Absolutely loved this video, I'm predominantly a lure fisherman so I do a lot of walking and love going to New places and thanks to your videos I'm now walking /fishing with eyes wide open , wether it be bird life , plant life , geology it really is fascinating and when you stop to take it all in ...kinda makes you feel alive ! Thanks John
It absolutely does doesn’t it. The fishing is just the excuse that makes you go to these places 😊
@@TheFishLocker 100% John that place you were beats Lyme Regis, the layers of rock there are sort of similar to Kimmeridge bay which is amazing

Thanks for this lovely video. I know the area well but you taught me lots I never knew! Take care near those cliffs please ;)

Happy new Year, i remember my late dad taking me down the cliffs at Hawsker it was steep and hard to get back up when your only 7, but i always look for them when at Whitby etc, i was at Bempton at Chritmas and went to Brid, there is a shop that sells those amminites for quite a bit of money but he has a huge one that has been in the window since i was a kid.
Its been a long time since I was at Bempton. In fact it was when Hannah was pregnant with James. Haha

Very enjoyable and informative ….I’d never heard of a burbot. Every day is a school day. Thanks John. I think James could happily search that beach for his dinosaur treasures.

Got the fishing bug back after raising a family and working for the last 30 years, just a message to say how much i love your video`s, so very informative and easy to follow, I've bought a cheap telescopic sea rod and reel and I'm watching your back catalogue to give me some ideas. caught my first ever sea fish (a Pollock) at Berwick Upon Tweed a couple of weeks ago, thanks for sharing

Very interesting and lovely filming what a cracking start to the new year. A Geology lesson as well as fishing, nice ammonites (used to find them in Galt Clay in quarries in a place called Pitstone Near Tring. As for the fishing, that was the biggest rockling I've ever seen. More of this please!

All the best for 2022 John might make the trip down from South Shields to Whitby just for the chance of a little fossil they looked amazing :0)
Good luck. 😊👍🏻
A very spectacular cost line mate and them fossils where amazing so good to see. Not sure if you have heard but a place called Rutland where there's is a big reservoir round my neck of the woods they have found there on 1 if the little islands they have the largest full Skelton of a lchthyosaurs witch lived 250 million years ago ever found in the UK over 10 meters long. Also now as a sea dragon. There's gunner be a program about it tomorrow night on BBC 2 8pm if your interested bet James might like to know about it. Great video as always mate all the best tight lines 🎣🎣🎣
Yes mate I have. I have even sailed on there when I was in the navy stationed at Wittering.

good to see you back up in gods country John !! Its been a hard year up here and patchy to say the least. A daytime codling in flat conditions is a decent result
That’s what I was trying to say to folks. I had gone up with the forecast of a good sea running, but it died off overnight sadly.
The fossils are fascinating, I live on the isle of wight so we also get a lot of fossils, found a massive one down whale chine years ago, too big to carry home though

@@iangoldsmith8825 Do you know this part of the world? There are beaches here that put Cornish beaches to shame! The only let down can be the blooming weather sometimes. Lol!
@@nicholaskemp2246 I am from there. The beaches up there are nothing like the beaches in the southwest. The sand in Cornwall is like the Caribbean. The Whitby beaches are nothing like them. It’s just dismal, it’s no wonder the majority of locals are all so depressed. Most uninspiring place I’ve ever lived. @@TheFishLocker It sure will help folks out. It looks amazing the fossil coast. Great to see you getting about. Really interesting. More good times to come. Onwards John onwards.
Being as I left 30 years ago I haven’t heard of cart but it looks like an excellent idea. I’m sure everything swimming off New England would love it or a similar mess. I’m not sure Americans would make the swap though- a crab for a fish- but I’m sure Striped bass fishermen would have a go.
Do Southwest fisherpeeps make it with spider crab?
You can probably make puke sausages out of anything, even chicken bits fishing for catfish. If I could still fish I’d be making that poop all winter.
Spider cart works well but local crabs always fish better in local waters for some reason.
brill vid john as normal good to see you fishing up north

Well done, John and Tom. Sometimes fishing is more than just about fishing. I worked 25 years as an oil and gas exploration geologist come navigator. In the early years, when elf and safety were not such a big concern, we could fish at will from the vessels. One of my best sightings was of a nautilus swimming along, much as the ammonites used to. I got several fossils for Xmas from the family, mainly polished ammonite sections, but also a Madagascan fish. Getting back up the cliffs is getting harder but keeps me going. Thanks for your efforts and videos.
Hi Max, when you say navigator did you mean geosteering? I'm also a geologist and have worked in the oil industry for just over 20 years. We already had the dreaded elf n safety in the few years I worked in the North Sea so never had the chance to do anything as fun as fish off the rig but once we had a monitor in our mudlogging unit where we could tune into the ROV when it was diving and watch the fish which I believe were collies.
@@JagdgeschwaderX Hi, no, not Geosteering. I got into the onboard positional processing of the seismic data. Worked on a survey ship towing streamers with hydrophones and airguns as sound sources. Check out 'marine seismic surveying vessels'. I worked for Western Geophysical and Western Geco after being bought out.
Tom and I both work in the industry. I am subsea and he is geology but more for land deposits. Small world isn't it.
@@TheFishLocker That's awesome, I hope things pick up for everyone after such a tough few years, it looks like we're heading for a good boom finally.
