I was thinking the other day. Surely they wouldn't have used purity seals during the hearsay or before with big E still being alive. Didn't he hate and ban all types of religion and religious thinking.

They were called "oaths of moments" before the heresy. Basically a pledge of honor and loyalty to one another, the imperium and eachothers legions.
