It's the perfect size for me. Big enough but never too big. CRAZY portable. I've heard a lot of people are getting this new mini with cellular to us as a cheaper, larger iPhone.
Apple now has a great opportunity for iPadOS 16 to include Split View in portrait mode, where one screen is at the top and the second screen is at the bottom, this would be amazing for jotting down notes while watching a lecture with the iPad Mini in one hand and Apple Pencil in the other. I used the iPad mini 1st gen throughout college and it was absolutely perfect. I used it for reading textbooks, blackboard website, heavy emailing, reading notes, a planner, and researching. Mind you this is before the iPhone 6 Plus even existed and before light and thin laptops were mainstream. I was using a clunky Lenovo that would like 3 minutes to load up so the mini was so helpful to always have around. Plus, the battery life was incredible. It would last like a week on a charge (for my use case) compared to my 3 hour laptop battery life.
You can literally write ✍️ something down in a book 🤣😂🤣😂 how privileged are you? Good god and you can read using your laptop 💻 if you want a bigger screen I seriously envy you, literally how privileged are you tho? My god I feel like killing myself
Honestly, the best reviewer out there. All the other "you tubers" just bought these devices and said the same things about the size differences and what not. Not a single one out there actually used these devices like you did.
As a junior currently in high school wanting to change from my current iPad mini 3 I’ve used since freshman year, this was not only the most informative educational video but an actual student view review. I love being informed about specs of the new iPads, but get easily annoyed from not getting the feedback I actually want and this definitely was the best video to get feedback on the new iPad mini 6 that I looking for. So thank you! ✨
Did you get an mini 6? Sorry. Just curious. I make notes on my laptop using graphic/drawing tablet (4.5"x7") and am now thinking to get iPad. Mostly don't wanna get iPad 9th gen cause it uses lighting. But have heard from reviewers that the mini isn't the most comfortable to take notes on.
I had a 10th gen iPad ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxUGaHtKW8MwCql2fPyIm9-ftTqSMzKFFA . Felt it getting pretty slow at times even after doing a reset. So I am using that as a tablet for my 5 year old son and got this 9th gen version. MUCH faster, a little slimmer, smaller bezels, all around a leap forward. Plus, for the price that’s about $130-$150 cheaper than a current new model this is a nice deal. I look forward to the M-series CPUs coming into iPads which will really help future proof these tablets better but these latest CPUs are pretty strong and should do better to last several years with no compromises.
I feel like I had to write this comment. To give some perspective I am a 61 year old college instructor, so I always love when students talk about how things "really are" as sometimes we don't know what we don't know. I also understand I have 2 eyes, 2 ears and 1 mouth, so sometimes I have to just be quiet and learn! This was very well done, and although I am not looking to get this for the exact uses that you are making from it, I would be upgrading from the iPad mini 4, and I don't really like the larger iPads. So, not wanting to waste money I always go to UA-cam and learn from others who had taken the time to work through these devices. I plan on using it primarily as something that will replace the laptop (temporarily) to do activities like read, email, notes (I hadn't considered the pencil at all, but you do have me thinking about it), and doing some on the road removing photos and videos off of my iPhone 13 Pro when traveling and doing some work in iMovie, etc. I think the screen real estate will be fine in this size. Thanks for taking the time to do this - subscribing!
I've gotta say that of all the multitude of iPad mini review and unboxing videos out there this week, this one is by far the best. You actually show what it can be used for instead of focusing on the specs, or the chips, yada yada. Great video!
It frustrates me to no end all these washed out vegetables saying “no tech in the classroom” as if they think we’re playing Minecraft rather than listening to the lecture. No old frog, this is putting me 100k in debt I’m going to pay attention. I need to learn or I will die, open your dusty eyes and pay attention. Anyways great review, you seem like a cool dude, your perspective on its use cases was very helpful and insightful. Great video.
EXACTLY! Some people need tech to learn their way. You can't specify a specific way to learn and expect everyone to follow. Imagine having to print out pages of a textbook too bring to class?! Everyone's up in arm's about banning plastic but people waste paper on extravagant levels like this. Plus this whole "Tech is bad" idea is holding everyone back. Tech is the future and limiting exposure to tech limits opportunities enormously. Tech is especially great for lectures, I could record a lecture while taking notes at the same time. If i don't understand a word I could look it up in an instant without missing any notes. I dare a college to tell me I spent so much money for tuition and I'm not allowed to use tech to enhance the way I learn. Makes me furious.
My LSAT Prep classmates were eating thru printer paper & ink and there I was with my iPad just chillin’. I have Notability but I find myself using PDF Expert for annotating. I like it’s folder system better.
This video was super helpful as someone who isn't a student, I can still see how the iPad will be useful for me. I'm a busy analyst and always writing down notes in meetings to ensure I get the client the information they need so the notes with pencil can be really helpful. Also I very much enjoy video content on the go so this is the perfect little device. Another great thing about it is the ability to draw my kids photos with some downtime and send it to them. I'd like to note I really enjoyed your video as a first time watcher, you are true to your title by giving an honest perspective unlike most techtubers so I appreciate that. Like you said, it's not a perfect device, but in my opinion on the go, it's as perfect as it gets currently.
The ipad mini looks great but I think for student the regular ipad is a much better choice. You get more screen at a cheaper price. Neither of them are really laptop replacements. This is a niche product to me.
The iPad mini is exactly what it’s marketed as, which is a mini tablet, but it’s still a great option for students. It all depends on your preference though. Some people may want an iPad with a bigger screen when they’re taking notes, while others may like the ergonomics of the Mini. I do agree that iPads in general aren’t laptop replacements. My 2018 MacBook Pro had a known problem where the screen was glitching due to a loose switch and I tried to replace it with an iPad Pro, which was a big mistake. It was easy working with the iPad, but it was certain things I needed to do for my classes that I really needed a laptop for. I ended up caving and buying an M1 MacBook. I think for students, the iPads are good for note-taking and editing, but it’s a lot of capabilities that it lacks and a laptop will make up for that.
I see what ur saying but there are a lot of things like the apple Pencil second gen that makes this iPad worth it not to mention the amazing specs but yes the regular iPad is still an awesome value for the price especially for a student in debt lol
I am a Student which has already a Surface Book 3 13 inch. It can be seperaten and then I have a big tablet. I ordered now a ipad mini with a pen as addition to have a smaller longer lasting tablet. Mainly for reading and note taking.
@@chelsea8082 Hi, I’m a student just about to enter university and have been thinking about an iPad for the note taking but I can’t afford a laptop on top of that. Could you elaborate on the difficulties you faced using just an iPad? Any specific problems or subject based issues?
I know teachers always suspect kids of playing games or watching videos on iPads in classrooms, but I got an IPad 8 late last year and it completely changed the way I did my college courses. Like the way I immediately cut down the amount of paper I used, and using an app everything was so neatly organized and I could find things quickly when studying instead of rifling thru pages. I wish I had one in High school, like thinking of my bulky binders and folders spilling with papers that easily could’ve been scanned or copied down with a stylus… the way my backpack wouldn’t have caused me severe back pain :( I was a class of 2020 senior so I literally got the iPad a year into college, and I’m so upset I didn’t switch earlier.
It’s unbelievable how hard it is to find videos on the last iPad mini and about the new one in regards to reading. FINALLY!!!! I have been considering upgrading my old mini to this one. I feel sold on it after watching this 😭💵💸 lol the subtle humor here and there in the video 😂👏🏼
It's not how big it is, it's what you do with it. I went back to school a few years agl to catch up on the advances in physics that had been made since I graduated in 1969 and I was able to do everything with the Samsung Galaxy Tab Note 8. If I get a mini, I will name it Minnie.
I'm passed my student's stage of life. I can't seem to realize how a student can concentrate on taking lecture notes and study on a gadget with so many distractions like YT, movies, music, etc. Then, I used different paper notebooks for different subjects and I still get easily distracted like doodling on my notepads. I guess it would depend on the individual. But if I were to go back in time I'd choose a gadget purely for note taking like Remarkable, Kindle paperwhite for reading, etc.
You can literally write ✍️ something down in a book 🤣😂🤣😂 how privileged are you? Good god and you can read using your laptop 💻 if you want a bigger screen I seriously envy you, literally how privileged are you tho? My god I feel like killing myself
Really want this ipad mini because I’m tired of having to haul around my heavy laptop to and fro from my university to home and its especially annoying to carry when i want to go have dinner with friends after class. I just want something to slip into a small bag thats good enough to take notes with in lectures.
This is why I love you man! You give a real-world student view and helps provide insight into how product daily usage could be. I'm excited to use the mini in my flight training. Just hope it handles well in a flight deck and doesn't overheat much.
Advice from a Mini 5 owner to any new mini adopters: Attach a 3 point elastic strap to the back. You don’t even remember you’re one handing. It just kinda becomes natural. Ive tested taking it off, but holding it without it feels precarious AF. Don’t know how I juggled in the first few weeks without it. Might be hard with one of those Apple cases. Not sure. I’d try it if I had one. I just use mine around the house, so I cut the front flap off my UAG case and the little strap hands grab onto that perfectly. If I travelled with it, I’d throw it into one of those thick surf wear type zip up slip cases. There seemed to be a few online. No this is not an ad. Lol. I got a TFY one off Amazon. I actually ended up buying 2 cause I then wanted to get it to pretend to be a 4 point strap. But at 6 points & overlapping itself, it’s unusable. Lo. If I could be motivated to, I’d design and make a 4 point one and make heaps o cash. Lol. Can someone please do that. I’ll buy it. I custom where I place the 3 hands to top left, bottom middle, right middle low. It’s not on the instructions, but feels looser and gives me a handy 2 finger hold in landscape. I flip it around all the time. But I mainly prefer portrait. It’s good for reading comments while listening to YT vids and comics & drawing. I mainly use it on my back in bed. Never been so comfortable using a computer. I can even draw this way with the strap. Plus iPad never hits your face with a strap on it. Lol. I just see all these reviews now, and think, “where’s your strap”. Lol. I did have an Air 4 for 2 days before the mini, but would be curious how a strap does on that. It would have to improve it heaps. I tried the Velcro ones too, but not for me at all. Too clunky. I hope they become popular and we get heaps of cool strap variants. I was going to make one with tape and elastic until I found a couple online.
I used the iPad Mini 2 back in my college days and it was amazingly convenient, from keeping digital copies of all the books we used to more advanced software and note taking. Too bad the darn thing new exactly when the extended warranty ended because the screen started to wash out.
I am an old man now, but from what I remember, iPads are perfect for school. Just perfect for note taking of all kinds. No tool is perfect, so you will have to decide what you can afford and how you will use the device most of the time. A good laptop is still a good idea for heavy typing, spreadsheets and the like. And, yes, I am aware of how many times I used the word perfect in this comment.
I was tempted to buy the new Ipad Mini when Apple introduced it, but since I have an iPad Air 4, I thought there’s no reason to get one. UNTIL I came across this video and saw how practical having a Mini around. Now I’m 99% close to buying one! Thaks for this informative video and good luck on your studies! 😄

I used my sisters old iPad mini 3 for a few weeks for uni and I absolutely loved it, It’s the perfect size in my opinion about the same size as an A5 notebook and the new IPad mini 6 is 0.4 inches larger so I ended up buying it but still haven’t started using it yet. It’s really not as small as all these reviews make it seem, I personally cannot grab it with my hand it’s too big and it doesn’t fit in any of my pockets but maybe that’s just because I’m a girl and we have the smallest pockets😂
I love to see someone who is also using a larger iPad for more needy tasks. Was looking for this kind of perspective. There have been times where I’ve been using my MacBook just as an extra screen, and doing the more intensive task on my iPad Pro. This IPad Mini would totally function as an extra screen for researching or something of that nature. For most things, my IPad Pro can do 90-95% of what my mac could.
Watching this on my iPad mini 6. I stopped being a student about a decade ago. This device is amazing and the size is perfect to use whilst working from home.
Thank you!! I started my first semester of grad school, and I was hoping that someone would review the new iPad mini, but from a student perspective and I have found that video! I look forward to watching your more in-depth video.
This is fantastic. I am doing a tech refresh for my PhD and the new company which both just started and was on the fence about the iPad mini 6. I will certainly be buying one!
Nice one Noah - really good demonstration of usage possibilities that go beyond just student use. You've convinced me to keep my beloved 12.9 iPad Pro M1 and use it in tandem with my newly acquired Mini 6 which is great. Enjoy your studies and don't drop out as I did like a dork several years ago!
I'm a university student too and I have to say that with the lockdown situation, sometimes last year, I used to work on my iPhone 12 mini to take notes. I had my class on Teams via my PC and for some of my subjects I literally have all the lectures of the semester on my iPhone, which is kind of lame when you have to prepare your exam at the end of the semester. Having an iPad mini with a pencil could literally change the game, even in class, when I don't have to spend two hours taking notes! Thanks for the review! 😁
As a fellow college student, I appreciate this kind of review. I’m looking into waiting for the iPad mini 7 that’s eventually coming out. But I’m wondering if the size will be alright. I honestly don’t care for how huge the new iPads are. I have small hands as it is so not really that convenient
Hi, I am kind of a long-time subscriber, and I must say I am glad to see you be more comfortable and natural in front of the camera. I appreciate your effort, and I hope you continue to make great content as usual. good luck with your college
I really like how you tried to show all the benefits of the iPad mini for students, but I noticed you said that you don't really take notes in classes. I recently bought the 4th gen iPad air and there's no way I would be able to properly take notes in classes with a smaller screen. And also you talked about how conviniet it is to just take a quick note on the iPad mini rather than on the pro or a laptop, but most people don't have the amount of money to spend on iPad mini, pro and the laptop. So, to everyone that's thinking about buying an iPad, I would recommend to go for the air or pro.
though a business student probably isn’t the best reviewer for my (future) field of study, this is still an amazing review - ESPECIALLY considering he’s left handed. Overall a great change of pace compared to nursing student reviews. I think my decision has been made for me
Thanks for this! I will not be buying it to replace my IPad Air 4. The screen on the mini is really not optimal for split screen and have to keep zooming in.
I had an ipad mini retina during my student years and I loved it so much, as a graphic design student it would be so useful to have this one with the pencil
I see one of my friends in school using an iPad Mini. It’s basically “pixel-perfect portability.” It was a perfect and small size for transportation, and had a sleek design.
This is the first time I see one of your videos and, to me, this was a lot more useful and informative and most other reviews. I like that it shows real world use beyond specs and numbers. Great job!
Great, indepth video. Better than like 90% of the reviews out there. Good luck on your studies, I will probably be buying this tablet for my studies as well.
Brilliant video; this is more than enough of a review. Can't possibly see wha more you could cover. This was very informative especially as a student. Best video I've for the iPad mini 6. Subbed!
Hm. the way I see it... let me give an example: suppose you have to carry a laptop for reading slides, notes, books these kind of regular and simple stuffs. This device can free you off of the 2-5Kg laptop weight. This is the biggest benefit I see as a student. You don't need an iPad mini for taking notes. But, with a laptop around, you can do many other things a iPad mini can't. so, personally I'm okay with carrying a laptop around.
I got the 9.7 ipad after being a life long samsung galaxy tablet user and I found it to be massive. Even now after using it for a couple years, its still pretty big and inconvenient for me to carry around. I don't like the legagy iPad designs so this has a lot of potential for me while being closer to the size I want!
iPad mini is amazing and I’ll def be getting one. My only gripe is the screen is not fully used for those apps. There’s so much space on the sides where apps appear even bigger on the iPhone, so hopefully they fix that Bc then what’s the point of the extra screen space.
This was helpful. I think it is still very convenient taking notes and annotating PDFs on a larger iPad. But this iPad mini is going to be helpful with a MacBook or even an iPad Pro as a secondary note taking device. I am amazed that people will have multiple notebooks or a notebook and a textbook scenario in analogue world but not many will use two tablets to review something on one tablet and note take on the other. I find myself often thinking whilst opening multiple windows on my iPad Pro and taking notes in one of them, that it would be really helpful if I had another tablet device/iPad to take notes. The iPad mini fits the bill perfectly. Thanks for the review!
That's really a awesome review. This video truly contains what I'm searching for. Complete experience. That's how a little thing can add up lot of easiness in life.
Good job Apple. They might not expecting that this mini will boom like this. Good thing they're still pushing the minis. I'm planning to buy one use it as my main phone 😅

Great pre-review. It was indeed fun to watch. Your views on the iPad Mini 2021 are indeed useful, and beyond just student endeavors. I'm considering getting an iPad for both in-house and mobile use, and this form factor and specs is very appealing. It would be nice to take this device to a business meeting and take notes, and be able to snap photos on-the-ground at a project site. Hopefully, there's an app that can combine the two, and be able to export to MS Word for reports or meeting minutes.
Great vid! I’m a Psyc PhD student and use the 12.9 Pro. It’s great but the size of the mini is perfect for notes during therapy sessions. Might be worth getting the cellular version. Apple Watch + mini = leave phone at home. I can’t believe you print out so much stuff. Lol! Have a great semester

Hey! Please review the new iPad mini 7th Gen. I am interested in getting it and could you compare it to the iPad Air M2 which is better for students regarding the AI capabilities
my first and only iPad was the mini. back in 2014. It allowed me to leave my laptop at home and use just the ipad and keyboard case. I had so many apps that made note taking easy and even recorded the lectures while taking notes using the back cam while the ipad is mounted on the case. the app would record in the background so that you have the screen to use. It was so concealable that you wouldnt know I'm carrying an iPad until I use it. even when I don't have a backpack. it would just disappear into the books I'm carrying. When it was stolen, I really was so upset. I lost months of work, I fell behind in class because it happened just before exams.. I managed but I've never been able to afford another iPad since.. :(
I considered this as a student but its honestly just a hair too small, gives off "phablet" energy. Especially for note taking, because I would be coming from conventional paper and pencil. The mini seems designed for children and the elderly, easy to hold, yet more screen than a phone.

NOT having stacked split view honestly seems to be done out of spite at this point ngl
Great suggestion!

Aren't copies useful for notes?

@@denueve4537 that would be interesting to know. As a windows and linux user I'm very used to splitting apps the way I like. So is that doable on this device (or the other ipads)?
I used the iPad mini 1st gen throughout college and it was absolutely perfect. I used it for reading textbooks, blackboard website, heavy emailing, reading notes, a planner, and researching. Mind you this is before the iPhone 6 Plus even existed and before light and thin laptops were mainstream. I was using a clunky Lenovo that would like 3 minutes to load up so the mini was so helpful to always have around. Plus, the battery life was incredible. It would last like a week on a charge (for my use case) compared to my 3 hour laptop battery life.
No one is gonna mention the 1:54 SMOOTH pencil flip?

Honestly, the best reviewer out there. All the other "you tubers" just bought these devices and said the same things about the size differences and what not. Not a single one out there actually used these devices like you did.
Please this is the comment to pin. Honestly.
Thoughts after having it for years?
Your comment is funny and sad at the same time 🥲 too relatable.
😆 I love this
They do that????🤨Wow!
why do u have a hernia as your prof pic
I see what ur saying but there are a lot of things like the apple
Pencil second gen that makes this iPad worth it not to mention the amazing specs but yes the regular iPad is still an awesome value for the price especially for a student in debt lol
I am a Student which has already a Surface Book 3 13 inch. It can be seperaten and then I have a big tablet. I ordered now a ipad mini with a pen as addition to have a smaller longer lasting tablet. Mainly for reading and note taking.
For reading and highlighting, nothing beats the Mini. So easy to hold for hours and hours.
Great !
They don’t 😅

This is why I love you man! You give a real-world student view and helps provide insight into how product daily usage could be. I'm excited to use the mini in my flight training. Just hope it handles well in a flight deck and doesn't overheat much.
Advice from a Mini 5 owner to any new mini adopters:
Attach a 3 point elastic strap to the back.
“If I’m ever going to read a book for leisure…” Yeah man you are definitely a student. 😂😂😂 That was me all college and grad school.

I haven't been this excited to receive an Apple product in quite some time. Getting mine tomorrow!
Honestly, I will echo most of the comments but this is definitely the best video of the iPad Mini so far! I look forward to your review!

Hm. the way I see it... let me give an example: suppose you have to carry a laptop for reading slides, notes, books these kind of regular and simple stuffs.
I clicked on the video for the iPad review/perspective.
I stayed because you’re so adorable! 🤗
iPad mini is amazing and I’ll def be getting one. My only gripe is the screen is not fully used for those apps. There’s so much space on the sides where apps appear even bigger on the iPhone, so hopefully they fix that Bc then what’s the point of the extra screen space.
This was such a great video! Not only did I have many of my questions about the iPad mini answered but your delivery was very engaging, well done!

They really didn’t give you a replacement

So proud of you Noah:) very hardworking and flexible in regards with managing time.....Much love from the Philippines...
I considered this as a student but its honestly just a hair too small, gives off "phablet" energy. Especially for note taking, because I would be coming from conventional paper and pencil. The mini seems designed for children and the elderly, easy to hold, yet more screen than a phone.
