@@projectpitchfork860 Kinda yeah the world's second largest army got their cheeks clapped by Europe's poorest country. Russia's military history is full of "Russia should win this easily" that turns into "Russia took some land but at horrific cost to human life". Russia is cartoonishly incompetent.
The most interesting part was this challenge made 2 huge discoveries, the first during Kanbeis Error being that the Sonya Gaiden unlock is actually 30 total days for the 3 missions instead of 8/10/12 days individually, and the second in Rivals being that Olaf is sitting somewhere off-camera can cause it to snow, which was probably the best gift he could have given Andy in Rivals
If you google for it, you find a 2yr old Reddit thread that mentions that the Sonja requirements are different for the Advanced Campaign. So I'm not sure a discovery was actually made here.
@@AyCe Still, it was so obscure that noone actually knew about it before now. Or maybe people forgot about it since people just follow a guide just to beat Kanbei's Error.
@@AyCeit's perfectly fine to credit multiple people with 'discovering' the same thing, so long as those people each did properly make the discovery independent of eachother and the discovery in question was not yet well-known at the time the later person made their discovery. Historically, there are many examples where this type of thing has happened and generally speaking so long as this was the case, whoever popularized the finding is given credit for the discovery whereas the other individual, even those having technically made the discovery first, are typically relegated to a footnote if that -- and in cases where the above rules are followed, even the snobbiest of historians who are get the most firey about Edison stealing ideas from Tesla still generally consider this to be a perfectly fair way of apportioning credit.
Honestly idk whats more impressive, doing AW1 deathless or making 2 new discoveries that have never been found in a nearly 20 year old game. Either way this video was amazing.
*Spoilers* Update. I have a theory on what happened with Snow on Rivals. You may notice that I sometimes turn fog of war off to show enemy units, I do this with a memory viewer command. I am effectively altering the ROM's code. I turn it off to record, then turn it on again. However, messing with the ROM's code can have unintended side-effects. I think the snow glitch may have been caused by me doing this. I guess that means my Rivals attempt isn't legit, and it is actually impossible to clear it normally, but at least it made for an entertaining video!
So for the Sonja missions in the advance campaign, it’s apparently just a case of the turn limits being different compared to the normal campaign. According to a Reddit thread I found about this, the turn requirements for the Kanbei missions in the Advance Campaign are 8, 14, and 16 compared to the 8, 10, and 12 turn limits in the Normal Campaign. I’d link the Reddit thread but UA-cam doesn’t like people posting website links.
Wow! Not only was it possible, but Mangs also somehow managed to discover how unlocking Sonja missions work, dispelling a 20-year-old misconception, but he ALSO discovered that you can somehow make it snow in Rivals?! How is it possible?! Mangs really is working overtime for the Advance Wars and Fire Emblem community. XD It is going to be exciting to see if someone can solve the Rivals Snow bug and see if speedrunners figure out how future runs of Advance Wars runs will incorporate it.
Speaking of rare "glitches" in Rivals, I found something incredibly strange while I played it. I was attempting my probably 15th try to beat this map. At some point, I got to a high day count, around 17 or so. I managed to build up an army to start pushing back on the north and south roads. I pushed through a bundle of Eagles troops on the road and after that... There was almost nothing there. No enemy units other than a couple of stray tanks and recons. For whatever reason, Eagle just stopped producing units. I know he didn't hit the unit cap since I looked through the whole north and south paths. I made it all the way to his HQ and saw him end his turn with nothing on his bases. Eventually, I moved an infantry in a transport copter over there and capped the HQ. I have no clue what caused such a lucky break, but I was grateful for it. Maybe it was the emulator I was using, or the game itself? I don't know. Seeing this video, it seems like Rivals is a much stranger map than we thought.
Hawke, you're going to Green Earth. Eagle just spent 47 days attacking Andy, losing countless units and not able to kill a single one. Flak, you're going after Orange Star ... good luck
The snow falling during Rivals after so many attempts... It's like you were hoping for a miracle and suddenly the sky answered your prayers, giving you a single turn of relief. That's incredible. Please don't leave it at that, I'm really curious to get to the bottom of this and know if it was a glitch, or something that happens after you die so many times, or an easter egg, or anything else. Make another video called The Miracle of Snow in Rivals or something, cause I really wanna know xD. It's so cool when things like that are discovered more than 20 years after the release of the game. I loved all your deathless runs, they're really interesting to watch, but this one is probably the best due to your two discoveries.
Snow appearing on Rivals! is such an anime ending - if you only believe hard enough the impossible can happen and alter the fate itself! I watched it whole in one sitting, I absolutely love it. Most of the maps feel absolutely hopeless to do without losing a unit - I know it by heart spending a lot of time in this game - and yet you always found a way. Such a treat, an absolute banger of a video.
There's no bug here. It's obvious that Olaf had a change of heart after getting beaten by Andy at the very start of the game and decided to help from the shadows in the final mission.
If you want to continue this series, Super Famicom Wars DOES have a goal. After clearing a map (Unless its a 4-Player map), if you save afterwards, the map you played on will be colored to match the team whom won signifying they've "conquered" that land." iirc, if a player conquers all land against a CPU, that will trigger the ending sequence. There are 4 unique endings depending on which team you played, though if you only wanted to do two (The Regular and Special Maps) then that's understandable. Also, the 4-Player maps lack the conquering. You CAN do all the maps for fun, but there will be no signs to show what stages you have cleared.
I can totally understand this goal, because as a kid, I felt horrible if I lost even one unit. I felt like I was terrible CO sending my men in to die. Flash forward a few years later, when I was playing the fan translation of Super Famicom Wars. I was struggling on a certain stage and something broke in my mind. I realized the easiest strategy to beat any mission was to flood the map with infantry units. Just send 'em into the grinder to block the enemy from making any moves. If they killed one of my infantry there's one right behind to take their place. I became the terrible CO... childhood me would have been deeply ashamed of what I became.
I think it's a testament to this game's core design that barely-functioning and exploitable AI can still be challenging if placed in the right map. Simply mechanics + map design = a timeless and engaging strategy game that is so well designed it almost plays itself.
What a wild ride from start to finish. I thought I had seen all the big brain plays for this game, but some of your strategies absolutely floored me--from constantly joining Mechs to slowly advance, to setting up that incredible wall as Eagle against Sturm, to using the UNIT CAP to stop the enemy producing air units. I did watch the video start to finish, and this will probably go down as one of my favorites of yours to have watched. Looking forward to the Rivals snow glitch deep dive, if you do decide to look into it!
I almost forgot about this series. Looking forward to it. Just finished, worth the one sitting watch. Favourite would be AW2 because it was my first AW game. Would love to see this in the reboot. If nothing else for comparison
Would love to see you play Battalion wars one day. I know you said it doesn't interest you, but it is a spiritual evolution of the original Advance Wars
What a legendary commander, able to complete over a hundred battles without losing a single soldier. I watched the entire video in one sitting while running a few accounts in EVE Online. Yay for free time.
I’ve watched all of the videos of this series and it always amazes me. This ending was very interesting, not only you managed to do a deathless run, but you also discovered 2 new features that nobody else ever had. Good job egg! 🥚
59:30 i like to think that the lenient s-rank with no sturm meteor strike is designed to give the player a false sense of security because it is immediately followed by the brutal final battle! It is the first phase of the final boss.
I watched all 4 deathless campaings, and this video in one sitting Watching each video felt like seeing a magician do impossible magic tricks, I am yet to complete a single AW campaing but your videos analizing amazing competitive games are helping me get better. My favourite game is DC/DoR mainly because of the naval battles and the careful balance of all units in the game.
That 1 HP APC on 1:13:29 made me love so hard. Dude, Mangs, this is absolutely insane. I've seen streamers tackle the most cruel mods for classic Resident Evil. But this challenge might top 'em all. You're tenacity for this challenge and this franchise deserves respect.
I was at a convention this entire weekend, and seeing this in my feed made me thought I was hallucinating. Considering the advance campaign is all about sacrificing units so you can bumrush their HQ before the timer ends you or you get overwhelmed...I never thought this was possible!
You asked who watched this video in one sitting, and I am one of those people. Had you on while I work, and it was a great watch/listen. The only AW game I have ever played is Dual Strike, and that was a good time. Played that game a ton as a kid.
This was absolutely insane! I didn't expect this one to be possible and was very pleasantly surprised to see that it was. I adore insane challenges like this that have even more insane solutions to them and the answer to Rivals gave me just what I wanted. The fact that you had to discover the whackiest glitch to just magically summon snow with Olaf's spirit or something was incredible and mind blowing! The Sonja mission combined turn limit requirement discovery was also really cool, but the random snow glitch in Rivals was just completely out of this world! I'd love to see people take a deeper look into it to figure out exactly how it works and why it happens. To answer the questions at the end, this video was by far my favorite out of the deathless runs mostly because of the two discoveries, but also the absurdly stupid strategies at some points like the mech spam on the first Grit mission and the fact it was actually indeed possible. I'd like to mention that the final battle was also really cool! Also I watched this all in one sitting :) Love your Advance Wars content and can't wait to see what comes next!
I found out about your channel through the Advance Wars 2 deathless video, and it's what convinced me to give Advance Wars another shot. The videos on the channel helped me understand how AW functions, and I was able to beat the campaigns for AW2 and Dual Strike for the first time after having abandonded them years ago. Participating in the Egg Cup Season 2 was also a great time. These videos even got me to try out other similar games that didn't click with me during my first playthrough, like Fire Emblem and FF Tactics. While I'm still not fond of Fire Emblem, FF Tactics A2 has since become one of my favorite games of all time. So, thanks for reintroducing me to a series I had forgotten about and sparking my interest in SRPGs. Also, I am one of the mad lads who watches massive videos like this in one sitting.
I cannot believe you did deathless S-rank on Captain Drake. Insane. This might as well be the go-to solution compared to playing the map the normal way
Wow, I'm midway video and discovering the ammount of turns needed to unlock the Sonja missions is just INSANE! Such an honor, isn't it Mangs? I just finished the video and someone needs to verify the snow glitch, because that was also insane. And yes, I'm one of those who enjoyed all 4 videos and watched them all from beginning to end.
Holy moly. I honestly went into this thinking it was impossible. Instead, I've come to see that after 23 years, the game still has strange quirks that we still hadn't discovered. Awesome run. This was the first Game Boy Advance game I got. My parents bought this for my birthday because they forgot to get actual games for the thing lol so it was a last second wrap up. I remember playing Max's Folly on the car ride home.
Watched in 1 sitting while I was working/walking home. I've played advance Wars since it's release, but never would I have thought that this was possible, you have my respect and I bow to your superior skills and strategies.
Finally got around to watching this and I was blown away by the discovery of triggering random weather in Rivals, I see it as Mangs harnessing the power of the Olaf’s Blizzard despite not playing as him! Also worth mentioning the Sonja Mission requirements and how you truly unlock them, That was an Epic Showdown between two Rivals and a well earned Victory for the Ages! I kneel in respect to Mangs!
I was just thinking the other day “I wonder why he never did this with 1. Maybe it was too hard without Kanbei or Colin.” And then lo and behold, this showed up in my recommended.
Impressive. Watched it in one sitting. This made me think.. Has someone ever made a video on how the OG 3 games improved on the AW design since the SNES release (and improved upon itself, or made something worse) with each subsequent release?
Man I’ve never played advance wars but I was wondering why the gameplay looked so familiar and then I realized why! “Into The Breach” must’ve been based off Advance wars, I’ll have to check out Advance wars for sure bc I loved into the breach
I watched this whole thing in a few sittings, actually. Had to take breaks, but it was still worth the whole watch. Very cool how you discovered the actual exact conditions to qualify for the Sonja missions, and getting snow to occur in Rivals! It likely is indeed a glitch, but it certainly saved your bacon! And, whether or not the snow was induced by you altering the ROM to show the enemies' locations in the fog, it's still massively amazing for you to conquer that mission deathless regardless. Congratulations!
well, i watched all four of them. you had me waiting with baited breath too. undoubtedly my favorite videos on this channel. as for my favorite, i'd say that would have to be days of ruin. the sheer pain involved in some of those longer grindier maps has to be appreciated. i love the hustle man.
`27:53 That's Hyper Repair. Hyper Upgrade wasn't a thing until BHR. `33:25 Wonderful! Now we can hear Sonja's beautiful music playing whilst her indirects rain death upon you.
Amazing. Aside from whatever shenanigans happened with RIvals!, it's amazing it can be cleared. It does make me wonder about the other split path missions though. I think one of Andy's would be next to impossible against Drake if I remember right since units all trapped and surrounded.
Now that you have completed all the Advance Wars in [Deathless Run] I would like to suggest that you finish them in [Pacifist Run] that is to say without killing any enemies just by capturing their HQs, I always wondered if it was possible to finish them like this.
Olaf had no dog in the fight but he couldn’t stand idly by and watch Andy get bullied over and over again. Great video and congrats on finally completing this insane challenge!
I watched the whole video in one sitting. I have been waiting for this, and it did not disappoint. Does anyone else want him to return to reboot camp, even just for the deathless challenge or an occasional one-off video?
Here are some other challenge ideas. Allied deathless run, where you play any campaign levels with an allied AI and you must complete the level without the allied AI taking any losses. A no CO powers/superpowers run, you can only live off of day to day powers and DoR CO Zone. DoR specifically. You are not allowed to load your CO into a unit ever. If the CO starts the level in a unit that is fine but out side of that no CO. Duel Strike specifically. Duel Strike only run, you can only use Duel Strikes playing the campaign you must swap CO’s at the end of every turn and you must immediately use Duel Strike as soon as it is ready. RNG build run. This should be done as a stream. At the end of your turn you use a random number generator to select one of your bases/airports/ports you then use the random number generator again to choose what unit you build.
Incredible stuff! Maybe the next challenge could be doing runs without using or building tanks, or without building battle copters. Something that is usually pivotal.
Managed to watched it all in one sitting. 2 Unknown Discoveries in AW1 (including the Snow Bug in Rivals) and accomplishing one of THE toughest Deathless AW challenges you’ve done by far. The Rivals portion put me on the edge of my seat as I watched. Also, someone should explore more about the Snow Bug on Rivals and make it public. Truly an amazing achievement Mangs. In terms of the big 4 Mainline AW games, I think that 1 and 2 were my favorite Deathless AW videos to watch. Great job Mangs!
Battalion Wars 2 is my favorite wars game. It would be cool to see you try it out. And yes, I watched through in one sitting since I thought this was cool.
This is what you get when a Fire Emblem commander becomes a CO. I've watched all of your attempts, not consecutively but lately I've watched the other ones on a regular basis. Here are summaries for all of your runs: AW2: A nice start! Also proved Kanbei is objectively OP. AWDoR/DC: Technically impossible because they want to a dark casualty of war theme. Only redeemable by Mangs' original voice over drama. AWDS: Smarter AI + Tag Power - CO of Choice = Trivialization. But honestly, I won't be able to beat it. Also, Olaf + Drake is madness incarnate. AW1: The inspiration of all of the above and the hardest to complete. In fact, you need to unlock a very obscure secret to beat it. And to think the motivation of this series requires a deus ex machina to complete. Thank you for your endeavor and congratulations on completing every run of all Advance Wars games.
1:14:20 ain't that recon-chan tho? Congratulations, i didn't know it was possible, but you did it, with a little save scum, but hey, it's rivals, so i guess you get a free pass there XD You could try to beat wargrove deathless, or any other turn based game in the same style, like prince of persia for example, after all i love your deathless series and i hope you do more in the future, once again, congratulations
I watched the entire video in one sitting!. Really entertaining, specially the two discoveries of how the Sonia gaiden unlock requirements works, and the snow in Rivals!!
I did watch the vid in one sitting, I watched all 4 of the no units lost videos, and tbh, I don't remember the other 3 at all due to how long ago they were lol!
I did watch it in one go, and my main thought is... The sheer patience of this man for going through the Sonja missions for NO REASON. Those are annoying enough in the base campaign.

Dude, Mangs, this is absolutely insane. I've seen streamers tackle the most cruel mods for classic Resident Evil. But this challenge might top 'em all. You're tenacity for this challenge and this franchise deserves respect.
Grit at 9:03
"What is this 'URAAA' sound coming from the mountains?"
"Good question! I thought we were WITH The Russians."
"YEEHAW" would be more fitting for Orange Star lol
50:38 Eagle let himself go so bad, He could not take that loss anymore Man!!!!
That ending would've made for a perfect Christmas video
I watched it all in one sitting. Rivals win was hype as hell.
I was at a convention this entire weekend, and seeing this in my feed made me thought I was hallucinating. Considering the advance campaign is all about sacrificing units so you can bumrush their HQ before the timer ends you or you get overwhelmed...I never thought this was possible!
"Andy, let's have an honorable duel. Just you and me and the 15 air units I bring before you have 5 infantry units"
You asked who watched this video in one sitting, and I am one of those people. Had you on while I work, and it was a great watch/listen. The only AW game I have ever played is Dual Strike, and that was a good time. Played that game a ton as a kid.
"He's not a very good commander's advisor, but he never loses a unit."
Winter is usually portrayed as Death and Despair. Yet in this run, when it snows, hope ignites.
Kinda poetic
Also I watched this all in one sitting :)
Love your Advance Wars content and can't wait to see what comes next!
I watched in one whole sitting! Sort of. I kept tabbing between this video and a game I was playing at the same time.
Mangs: insane enough to succeed in challenges the rest of us are too afraid to even try.
I genuinely thought you weren't going to be able to do this. Well done. Maybe do Wargroove deathless?
Mangs, I have watched every single one of your deathless advance wars runs from start to finish. They are by far my favorite videos from you.
You are truly a God Mangs! 🎉
I watched this on 1 sitting. I was really curious on what the final outcome would be.
Salute to you!
I sat through all of it. I got hard locked years ago. This was so impressive and enjoyable. Thank you for kicking that games ass for younger me. 😅
Watched this whole thing on my TV.
Stuff like there are practically movies and deserved to be watched on TVs then a mobile device or computer lol
Impressive. Watched it in one sitting.
This made me think.. Has someone ever made a video on how the OG 3 games improved on the AW design since the SNES release (and improved upon itself, or made something worse) with each subsequent release?
This is UA-cam gold! Sensational bit of gaming demonstrated there young man.
Had this on in the background didn't even realise that it was an hour and 18 mins good job on the entertaining vid my guy
Watched all in one sitting, but at 1.5x speed. Always fun seeing nearly impossible situations overcome by stubbornness and ingenuity.
I don't think Sir Egg will find this, but I watched all of this in one sitting. Why am I like this?
well, i watched all four of them. you had me waiting with baited breath too. undoubtedly my favorite videos on this channel. as for my favorite, i'd say that would have to be days of ruin. the sheer pain involved in some of those longer grindier maps has to be appreciated. i love the hustle man.
As a person who loves AW since holiday car trips, its amazing to see you pull this off mangs. A true genius
I just had a thought rewatching this.
Wargroove, deathless.
Ufff. The finale... Truly appreciate your Suffering Mangs.
This is the first video I've seen of yours and I watched/listened to it all in one sitting, while at the gym. Very well done!
Went through this whole video in a single sitting. What a challenge! I'm absolutely floored you managed to make it through the whole game.
`27:53 That's Hyper Repair. Hyper Upgrade wasn't a thing until BHR.
`33:25 Wonderful! Now we can hear Sonja's beautiful music playing whilst her indirects rain death upon you.
Watched it all in one sitting while playing paper mario. I loved this one due to the new information you found.
Amazing. Aside from whatever shenanigans happened with RIvals!, it's amazing it can be cleared. It does make me wonder about the other split path missions though. I think one of Andy's would be next to impossible against Drake if I remember right since units all trapped and surrounded.
Thank you for clarifying the snow glitch in the pinned comment
That final battle is a battle of logistic. And turns out Eagle is a master of fuel supply.
Now that you have completed all the Advance Wars in [Deathless Run] I would like to suggest that you finish them in [Pacifist Run] that is to say without killing any enemies just by capturing their HQs, I always wondered if it was possible to finish them like this.
Its not possibly for simple reason: Hq guard ia
In AW2, there's a Green Earth mission where you need to destroy all of Lash's battleships so I don't think it's 100% possible
@@ZeroZForce Finish the game as a pacifist and making an exception for this single mission done in a normal way, simply.
@@Alexcobra861 would be more realistic as a "How Many Units Do You Need To Kill To Beat Advance Wars" instead of without killing
@@scooote9478 A [Minimalist run] maybe? Yes, why not.
I have been waiting for this for so long! AW1 is easily the hardest campaign so this will be fun to watch.
Here are summaries for all of your runs:
AW2: A nice start!
33:27 Sonja's theme is still an absolute banger after all these years
1:14:20 ain't that recon-chan tho?
Congratulations, i didn't know it was possible, but you did it, with a little save scum, but hey, it's rivals, so i guess you get a free pass there XD
You could try to beat wargrove deathless, or any other turn based game in the same style, like prince of persia for example, after all i love your deathless series and i hope you do more in the future, once again, congratulations
I watched the entire video in one sitting!. Really entertaining, specially the two discoveries of how the Sonia gaiden unlock requirements works, and the snow in Rivals!!
It's always neat when challenge runs uncover hidden inaccuracies or unknown nuggets of trivia. Free content indeed.
Oh god. Already on the first mission I'm getting flashbacks of the pain when trying to S-rank this campaign
I watched it in one sitting, and now I know that snow is Eagle's weakness!
This is the first one I watched, and I watched it in one sitting. Your tactics were strokes of genius.
