I so, so, so genuinely appreciate your transparency in regards to affiliate products + you starting your own brand and you laying out your actual margins for us. I'm here for high quality reviews regardless if they are slightly biased.
This is a video ad for the garbage mic, not a transparant comperison. The transparancy would be if he'd mentioned that Sennheiser mic is ME2 and it costs $129.
@@Diplo-7 I think you are having some trouble with reading comprehension this morning Val... highly suggest you maybe take the whole 3 seconds to thoroughly read my post again. Have a good one.
I knew that would be the case. You're simply paying for the name with the expensive ones that were still made in China like they all are.. I bought a 30 dollar mic for my computer and it came with an amp and arm and it sounds fine
Maybe it's subliminal advertising..sure he recommended the expensive one..but 99% of us are sitting there going "Hmmm.. that $29 lav mic sounds pretty damn comparable to the $600 one"
This comparison is not between 3 mics - but between a directly plugged in mic, a small recorder and a wireless system! For example the Sennheiser G4 you linked, is bundled with the Me-2-II mic, that is sold seperately for around 129,- (and can also be bought in other bundles - or even used with the Tascam recorder). So your comparison is actually not about the mics' qualities (including preamps) but more about the different systems. That are directly plugged in, small recorder and wireless lav setups!
Thanks for pointing this out! I'd be curious how all 3 mics would have sounded all plugged into the same recording device, because we're hearing different pre-amps in all 3.
I've done a few pink-noise analysis tests on the Tascam mic. There's a huge spike at 8khz that can sometimes make you prefer it because it seems brighter, but in reality its an unnatural and harsh spike up that causes sibilance problems and is tough to remove in post.
I know its been a while but how has it held up? Is it still good long term? Any major issues one should know about? Im really interested but skeptical because of the price.
Actually the Sennheiser Mic only is the ME2 and costs $130. You optionally _could_ add $470 for the wireless G4 transmitter and receiver. (Or a $25 Rode VXLR+ to connect the ME2) This wireless functionality you won't get with the FTF Lav or the Tascam (has other benefits). So I think it's a bit unfair to compare only the sound alone of these three options based on a maxed-out Kit-price without to compare the totally different feature sets of each package. They're different. Each of those three options has its legitimate purposes, pros and cons for sure. I just would have liked those included in the test.
Yeah it was definitely a skewed comparison that mis-represented the mic’s involved, not to mention how a wireless system with colour the sound as well. It definitely hides the small price increase it actually is to the Sennheiser ME2 and what an actual $400 Sennheiser lav like the MKE2 or MKE1 sounds like (not to mention durability).
Tascam sounds slightly brighter but otherwise the FTF mic sounds just as good to me as the much more expensive options. I think you've got my $12! Thanks for the honest comparison and for creating something I can afford!
Thank you, Parker! FTF is not bad at all! A little bit noisy and lacks highs. But it can be fixed on post with no problem. Also you can use "match EQ" for FTF and it will sounds like Sennheiser.
Very good and informative. I should tell you in my field, Audio Post Production for movies and television, that is so critical to exactly match your mic positions. The level 3 mic is nowhere near in the same position on your shirt. We call this "on" and "off" axis. In fact two of them are buried into a crease of your shirt while the lowest one is has an external pop filter and is 100% more on axis . The level 2 and level 1 mic have nicer and smoother high end than the level 3 mic. Sorry to get critical. Dig the channel and thinking about subscribing.
Tentacle Sync Track E - best of them all. Good lav mic included. 32 bit float so no worries of clipping. No interference from being wireless. Plus time code for easy accurate sync.
Awesome video! I can definitely notice a difference between the FTF and Tascam, with the FTF sounding a little more muffled to me. I will go with the Tascam, thanks for the recommendation.
Finally someone talking about the free voice record pro app! Seriously I built a boom system with my iPhone and a rhode video micro and the ability to adjust the gain and listen on headphones was an audio game changer for me!!! Best budget app for filmmakers in my opinion!!!
Working up to make some videos and I just discovered your channel. I want you to know how very much I appreciate your expertise and how generously you share your knowledge. Thank you!
I'm an audio engineer and studio guy. First, the FTF sounds great, less bright/sibilant than the others,so I'm guessing it would have better feedback rejection for live use as well. Listen to arguably the most popular voiceover/radio/podcast mic in the world, the Shure SM7B, it sounds very "boomy" and bass with attenuated high-end, this is why many people love it (EV Re20 is basically the same, famous "radio announcer voice" mic, Rush Limbaugh's "Golden Mic" was an RE20). Secondly, the "$600 Sennheiser lav mic" is really a $500 wireless system with a $100 (or cheaper) lav mic (the ME2). The real high end Sennheiser lav mic is the MKE2, which is vastly superior to the ME2, which is generally regarded by pros as a pretty terrible mic. The MKE2 is also built like a tank....build quality is very important on these if you want them to last. Lav mics usually die from the cabling failing, usually at the connector or right where it joins with the mic body. Anyway, in this comparison, the FTF is very impressive. It has a slight honky nasal thing going on (common in cheaper mics) but you'd never notice it unless comparing to other mics. Anyway, EXCELLENT comparison and very well done getting straight to the point and not wasting time. Aloha!
For beginners I'd definitely use the FTF on a couple projects and then have it pay for your Tascam! Incredible value. But I'd use the tascam myself! great video Parker
Can you make an updated video for 2022/2023? I love these videos---- so freaking helpful and they allow the audience to make their own judgement without making a purchase.
Most of the video sounded like it was leaking over the speakers of my note 10 with volume about ¾ of the way up. This is awesome. I love the honesty as to what Parker will get out of each purchase. I've used wireless transmission lavs and hate the interference. I like the self-contained style of the Tascam. Syncing in post has been way more worth it to me. I would have definitely bought the FTF Gear lav 2 years ago when I was starting to record.
I just got my new FTF Lavalier Mic, I am also a new FTF member and I must say you get a lot when you enroll in the Fulltime Filmmaker online course. what Parker and the whole team teach without a doubt if in the end I can improve the image, the audio and the way of presenting my videos on my UA-cam channel to my audience, for me it will be the best investment I have made with my money; The amount of material within the course is incredible and I know for sure after seeing everything the course has to offer that if I fail it is my fault, but I doubt that will be the case as I started to learn how to edit my videos and count a story with them, my videos don't have to be as good as Parker's for now, they just have to be better than I do now lolz. Why you compare recorder to microport to lav? I understand that every of those have got microphone but in both sennheiser and tascam the microphone is on "free gift for setup" level. You doesn't pay 200 and 600$ for mics, you pay this for recorder and microports. I can't see a reason to campare those like "woo the 29$ mic is nearly as good as 600$ mic!!!", no, it may sound similar to microphone that's added when you buy much more expensive gear. In my opinion much better would be comparison of your mic to for example boya by-m1 and rode lavier go, it might have much more sens if in title you tell price.
ftf mic is pretty decent for a start point, although i can't really hear a big difference between the tascam and the seinnheiser so i wouldn't go the extra mile to get the upgrade. the tascam gets the job done if you are on a budget. Thank you for the comparison !

Aaahahaha!!! "Walking on some rocks that are making a lot of noise" reminds me of the VERY LOUD Foley of shoes on pavement in '60s movies. How times have changed!
Hmmm, feels kinda weird to be referencing the two “higher” prices lav microphones based on their somewhat unrelated recorders or wireless transmitters. It would be more reasonable to state that the FTF and Tascam mic’s are actually approximately in the same price point in terms of actual mic value, while the Sennheiser shown is also their budget entry level mic option that sells for around only $125, not $600. This just doesn’t present it in the most honest way.
@@fulltimefilmmaker not implying integrity issues, sorry if you read it as that. I'm just questioning the validity of the price comparison when the comparison you are making is about mic audio quality when nether the Tascam or Sennheiser packages shown are usually bought in the professional market for their actual included mic as that's just an add on bonus to get people up and running with the actual intended product, the recorder or transmitter. Usually in professional work they will be paired with something like Sennheiser's MKE2 or a Countryman mic.

the $29 mic did well and going to be buying it as a replacement to my headset microphone which is absolute garbage. I dont use my mic for anything currently outside of gaming or virtual classes so no need for me to have professional grade but the FTF does pretty darn well for the price point. you can tell a difference between it and the higher priced mics but for things like youtube its completely acceptable
Of course NOW, you have the new Tascam DR-10L PRO with 32-bit float which means you don't have to worry about clipping or too low of volume AND you have a 32-hour battery and 18-hour record time, also with jammed time code. Plus the audio quality that is described here. -So, case is closed.
A suggestion for an FTF product would be some sort of budget-friendly Steadicam vest/arm. Might still be a couple hundred bucks, but if it was quality like I would assume you'd make it, it would still be worth it.
Very good , thank You ! I will wait for the new zoom and see results. Also when I saw bike video of the iphone 12 pro max i bought one for wide b-roll next to my GH5 on the gimbal for Weddings, good Job Guys !
These prices aren't for the mics though, it's for the mic and the recorder/receivers. You're not, for example, really comparing a $30 mic to a $200 mic, you're comparing it to an $90 mic, the mic itself is not $200. I went from the tascam mic to a $400 (mic only) Sanken COS 11-D and the difference in natural tone of voice and background noise reduction is astounding.
Other important differences not mentioned: the ftf mic has no recording device, and the Tascam screws into the recorder so that it does not accidently come out in the groom/officiant's pocket.
It's funny when you see coments like: thanks for being transparent "for that I'm going to buy your cheap mic" lol. Actually the real transparancy wout be that the Sennheiser Mic is the ME2 and costs $129. You optionally could add $470 for the wireless G4 transmitter and receiver. Very good , thank You ! I will wait for the new zoom and see results. Also when I saw bike video of the iphone 12 pro max i bought one for wide b-roll next to my GH5 on the gimbal for Weddings, good Job Guys !
Wow Tascam is actually really good, and you don't have to worry about wireless connection!!! WOWOWOWOWOWOW!!!!
love this transparency
Straight to the point and in depth! Respect!
(Or a $25 Rode VXLR+ to connect the ME2) This wireless functionality you won't get with the FTF Lav or the Tascam (has other benefits). So l think it's a bit unfair to compare only the sound alone of these three options based on a maxed-out Kit-price without to compare the totally different feature sets of each package. They're different. Each of those three options has its legitimate purposes, pros and cons for sure. I just would have liked those included in the test.
I advise everyone to listen to this video on either a GOOD set of headphones or a very decent set of speakers. :)
Great stuff Parker!
