After seeing Batman as a kid, I spent months drawing, designing and trying to build a functioning grapple gun. Disassembled my CO2 pellet gun, tried to integrate my fishing reel, learned how to pop rivet mending plates and made dozens of trips to the hardware store. In the end, absolutely none of it worked of course. Still had a great time trying! Edit: I LOVE hearing y'all's version of the 'same' story! Keep 'em coming. Where were all of you when I was a kid?! Wish I'd seen more makers growing up.
There’s a few, but they never show the props it’s always like a ‘pawn stars’ type start that always has a hot chick interested in an expensive item and she ends up getting bhanged for it. They’re like, 45min
The grapple gun was always one of my favorite impossible gadgets. It had that tantalizing level of plausibility that made it feel achievable, and could be used by the Bat Family so beautifully on screen. The Zelda hook-shot and Attack on Titan ODM gear both had the same effect and were great in their own environments, but there was something I just loved about Batman casually zipping off across the city with it as if it was nothing using a device I could almost imagine actually making.
Shadowhawk has a similar inner monologue about his grappling hook shooter in the first 4 issue limited series, thought it was a great homage to Batman.
@@brettbaratheon9776 I should clarify. The device is totally workable, and yes, Hacksmith and others have made them. Using it like Batman does is what's impossible.
i bet that retractable part of the grapple gun was meant for an action scene. Batman at that time in the comics was always using it kind of like scorpions "get over here!" move. they may have wanted to do that with it. i love Keaton Batman but i'm a HUGE Tim Burton fan. thank you for showing these as well as for the little trip down memory lane for me.
My first guess is that like many action movie shots using projectiles, a really easy way to get an accurate and fast missile is to start at the target and retract to the gun/bow/whatever, then play the footage in reverse
Infinitely fascinating! I saw Batman in the theater with my dad a couple of years before he passed. I was a kid, it’s a grownup movie. My mother was pissed. I’ll always remember all of Batman’s wonderful toys. I must have spent the evening and following days making my own bat gadgets
That is the batman I grew with and I have special childhood memories with those movies, Keaton is my batman, nothing wrong with other takes btw. My imagination always flies away with the batman gadgets in every movie, the amount of detail and work on those is amazing, you really can't appreciate them in screen because sometimes is just a blink and they are gone, but look at that detail man, beautiful stuff, thanks for sharing.
You can also see when it's shot, the wire coils outwards. The simple reason is to keep the rope tight while an actor was hanging from a harness. Raise the Batman and it stays tight looking.
I love that the cord functionally retracts and it still works. I also enjoy that Adam immediately started to reverse engineer how it was built in his mind.
Great seeing the Keaton Batman props, especially the fact the grapple gun has a functioning system to it. But I LOVED seeing the pillar of Pinhead from Hellraiser 3: Hell On Earth in the background behind the display shelves!! I want that! Lol
I could legitimately watch a video on every single item in that place, omg! I'm absolutely LOVING this series of videos and hope they continue!! Adam's enthusiasm and knowledge really makes these a pleasure to watch. I want to go to this place so bad, but I'd definitely settle for watching Adam tour there instead
So much more creativity went into the first two Keaton Batman films compared to the others. Like how great is Catwoman's suit?! Nobody would devise such a beautiful creation today.
If I had to guess with regards to the grapple gun... the cord of the gun could be attached to an invisible wire/cord and in that respect could then be pulled towards any object safely, with the spring keeping the cord taut. You could also attach just about any accessory to the end of the cord and attach the invisible wire to it for the same effect.
Recently got my hands on the NECA Grapnel gun and I'll say this, make sure it's tied up tight or you'll have to take it apart and reattach the string. Also it uses LR1 batteries, which are surprisingly niche products. Easy to find, hard to justify buying.
According to an interview with the fx team, one version had a actual working motor in it! And gas launcher. The front section also is supposed to detach
That specific grapple gun is one of the few props I've always wanted. I think I made one out of cardboard at one point, along with the bat symbol. I also had that poster that was brought up of Keaton holding the grapple gun.
You, Adam< have to have the best Job in the world- as it is evident from your passion that emmanates from you everytime I watch- whether it is making something- a show and tell or going to such cool places and seeing all these amazing things! Mythbusters was a fave programme of mine, but a bit hit and miss at the time in the UK- so glad you are on UA-cam now to bring all this content to us mere mortals!
They must have shot the grabblegun in reverse, to make it look like it shoouts out, when in reality it only retracts. it does not have a trigger i guess because you just had to pull the string and let it go for the shot of it firering.
I have a Penguin that is supposedly from returns, 40" tall with cable controlled wings head and beak. Unfortunately the years have no been kind to it, and it is in need of a deep restoration, but its a very cool piece and I always love seeing more Keaton batman stuff out there!
If I remember right the grapnel wire was used when Selina was being held hostage. In the beginning and it went into the wall behind the guy, and so he pulled a piece of wall to knock the guy out. I remember in the 89 movie, the gimmick was when the grapnel comes around the belt it was in two pieces that was snapped together. I remember the toys I had it when it came out it was so cool. The grapnel was cool for it's time.
You are in fact right with your first guess that it is indeed one of the belts for Alisha Silverstone's costume when they are basically wearing the anti-freeze ones. The ones for Clooney and O'Donnell are shaped a bit different and lack the logo as well as having shall we say 'additional protection on the front'. Also I'd wager that given it looks like part of a revolver in terms of 'in universe' or something that could be used more than once on set easier - that piece he says about being part of a firing mechanism more likely I think would hold cartridges of compressed air/CO2/whatever propellant the bat uses to launch the hook and rotate to the next barrel and charge for the next shot instead of waiting on a recharge of the first one. Like if the grapple when swinging doesn't secure properly you want to immediately fire it again not wait for a charge. Also love the little detail that it does actually have a sight on it for aiming.
I just recently got back into the comics because of the new movie (was away for about 11 years), and when I stopped into one of the local comic book shops, I saw they had a replica of this for $44. I hope it's there the next time I go back, because I want to buy it. Batman's grapnel gun is by far my favorite bat-gadget of all time. I love every single iteration of it.
Ok museum technician here - props are awesome but someone did some excellent work on the custom plexi mounts. They must have a good mount-maker for these objects!
Actually, in the museum escape scene in Batman 89, he didn't used the Grapnel Gun, he used the Line Launcher (also called The Gauntlet). Wow, I'm a dork.
I was thinking the same thing. But also I remembered they did a quick close up, of the grapple gun retracting. It was when Batman lifts Vicki Vale, who weighs a little bit more than 100 and 8.
Yeah, he might actually only mention that scene because of that catchy and classic Joker's phrase, and by the way I love that the develovers of Rocksteady but the grapling hook and the fact that you can grap the enemies with it, as well as that line launcher, which by the way are so great and useful to gather the riddler's trophees, avoiding electrical hazards and pits.
That 'wonderful toys' quote is great, but they cut out the best part.. when he turns to his henchmen and says 'Well don't just stand there.. Go ask 'im!"
The reel looks lik an automatic fishing real. Trips when a fish is hooked, and as the reel is attached to a tree limb or something it hooks the fish. I have a box of them.
Truly fascinating to watch! I have the original mould for the prototype '89 chest bat symbol and it is considerably smaller than the one that they finally used in the movie. Maybe why I'm always struck at how large the chest bat symbol actually is?
Never knew the grapnel gun was only used once in Returns for how famous it was. There's a pretty famous shot of Keaton holding the gun towards the camera before shooting it at the wall, I think it was used on the back of the VHS
It was probably used for a shot where the grapple is folded and attached to his belt but you can see the wire coming out of it to show that he's hooked onto something up above maybe.
maybe the retractable mechanism is used to record a grappling shot. If someone extends the cable from the gun while someone else holds it and walks away, then releasing the cable and recording the retraction, if you played it backwards it will look like it has been shoot ... maybe
Idk if this was already posted but the revolver cylinder on the grapple gun looks to be the magazine for a Millipore NovaSeptum sample device typically used to take sterile samples from manufacturing equipment in biotech/pharma.
Nothing warms my old Gen-X heart more than all the silent shade they're throwing on the Shumacher films while praising the Burton ones. "Just right here is an amazing trio of artifacts from the Batman universe," he says about the 4 props.
My guess is that the cord was pulled out with a hook on the end and filmed retracting. Then they simply reversed the film to make it look like it was firing.
I might be going out on a limb here. but that shot might have been intended to be filmed in reverse in order to get the appearance of the gun firing. I believe it’s just that the first part(“where does he..”) is spoken in a lower tone and not as audible in mono(which is the way many of us would’ve heard the movie on VHS in the 90s).
I remember some reels for fishing that you baited & hung off a tree limb. When the fish jerked the bait the reel would pull the fish in. The reel looks like it was from one of them.

Finally some love for the classic Batman movies. I don't understand why everyone hates them; in my opinion, they remain better than any of the subsequent 'edgy' ones.
Great to see these props. I do question that resin chest logo. That might just be a resin recast. I say this because the originals were painted latex. The color yellow was a bottle of testors hobby yellow paint.
My childhood Batarang was a clothes hanger that I tied an elastic rope from a toy wrestling ring to. I practiced zinging it out on a whim and catching the retraction. Got pretty good with it until the rope snapped.
I wonder if the retracting part of the grapple gun was built around an old automatic fly fishing reel? When you pull the line out it winds a spring like a watch and pressing a lever winds the line back in. The width is about right for a reel like and old Shakespeare Tru-art Automatic. They are really neat and simple reels.
Batman was the first movie I ever saw in the theater. I saw Beetlejuice in the dollar theater in the same year. Tim Burton was one of the driving forces for me going to film school. I'm a chef now.
I wonder, if the director was wanting a shot of the functioning spool unwinding after being fired, and a solution would be to extend the string all the way, film it retracting, then reverse the direct of the image to give the effect of it uncoiling
We all wanted a Batman grapple gun from the burton movie to the Batman animated series growing up, but then realize there’s no tiny gun that can hold a human man let alone 2 humans I.e. the first film, at least batman asks for vale’s weight which was a nice touch
So what we're saying, in regards to the missing props, is that Michael Keaton has a bunch of functional grappling guns and he's just waiting to be batman again.

I think the point of the spring function on the grappling gun, is to film it in reverse to make it seme like its been fired 😉
Hi
Please Freddy's Glove must be featured in a video
@2:44 Do you think it was used in retraction then in post played back in reverse to give the appearance of it being fired out & up?
