A lot of the stuff in the Raimi’s trilogy was practical, it’s the way he rolled since the Evil Dead days. The most amazing is Doctor Octopus’ mechanical arms were actual puppets! Save a couple scenes where it would have simply been impossible, but you’d be surprised how determined to do as much practical as possible 👍
My friend worked on it. I even got to see early wall crawl tests ;) Back then lens or helmet retraction was too expensive/time consuming to do in CG, and the entire team was swamped.
That mask (not sure about the suit) was made by Amalgamated Dynamics, whom the CEO (Tom Woodruff) was from my Home Town. He held a Practical SFX talk in town a few years ago and brought several masks his company worked on during that time. He brought a pristine version of the Green Goblin Mask and it was insanely beautiful. From the looks of it the mask Tom Woodruff has was likely for scenes that required closeups and likely not heavily used (if at all) for action scenes. Cool bit of history!
the guy who made the mask like the design is seriously goated. The guy who made the actual design with the drawings is goated as well as the maker. Incredible! So iconic!
Thank you for posting this! I wish they gave more credit to that and at least name the artists behind the costume. It’s remarkable! Let’s give credit where credit is due!
This is one of those costumes that's so visually captivating, everything from the detailing on the suit to the coloration of the materials, that I honestly never even compared it to the original comic book design. You see Willem Dafoe roll up in that suit and you're just immediately sold
I’m so glad that any of these suits did survive for this long. I was under the impression that they had rotted away or were disposed of since I couldn’t find any recent info on them. I love the design of this suit so much.
Unfortunately none of the Spiderman suits survived this long I don't think. That's the reason that for No Way Home they had to recreate the suit from scratch. It's not the most accurate and we at no point even see a practical mask actually worn by Tobey. Any time he has the mask on it's CGI.
@@battleframestudios8989 i know some Spidey suits from the third movie have been auctioned recently, and I believe Sony has a suit from the second movie in a recent video they posted of their archive. not sure about any of the spidey suits from the first movie though, those might be gone for good, i hope not.
Wouw, its a lot darker in real life. I really liked this Goblin, i think the comic version would be too silly, i dont think i would be able to take him seriously, this Goblin is absolutely terrifying!
I think this armor could have just used a purple tunic with a belt for more pumpkin bombs. But it most likely darkened with age, as the color are fading and aren’t as vibrant anymore.
This version is silly! But I’ve grown to love it. I think comic accurate gobby would look just fine in movies. I never understand why we can accept it in comics but not in the movies.
I saw on a documentary that they initially experimented with rubber masks, and some of the prototypes had animatronics in them, but all were deemed to look too “fake” to be used.
3:54 lmaoo he tried to say "I'M going to stand here with it" implying I'll hold it you look... Adam immediately takes it from his hands 😂 then ends up holding it in one hand
Haha! I was thinking that too! You can visible see him not wanting to let go as Adam takes it and then his physical discomfort every time he held it by one hand.
The extra electronics were for lasers with light tubes and electroluminescent plates that wer pulled about a week before shooting. We worked around the clock on that suit.
we? you worked on it? Thats amazing! If you know the guy who designed the mask (with drawings) and ultimately who made it is seriously goated! The design is flawless its as iconic as darth vader mask in my opinion. Btw the tubes on arms and legs are really cool and me and my dad were just now debating whether they served for Green Goblins sleeping gas he used on Spiderman in the movie. Because in the scene it went from his wrists and tubes were wrapped around the wrists so we assumed its sleeping gas tubes or something.
Gorgeous suit. I'm still more of a comic rubber mask + purple cloak sort of guy but I do love the reinterpretation of the headpiece as a menpo. Kudos to you and your team
This is such a cool item. I would guess that there was probable a fan in the missing lower back half that would blow air up and over the back of his head, helping to keep him cool and not fog the lenses.
I noticed that there are two potentiometers in the helmet and my guess is that they were used to dim or brighten the leds at the eyes and mouth seperately for filming .
I’ve gone back on forth on the comic accuracy of it, but it’s a beautiful suit at every angle. Also has a cool reflective/holographic paint job, which is a clever way to incorporate some of the original purple in the design through the shadows.
I've always thought this design was cooler than the original comic book designs. Nothing against them though. It screams 90s/2000s future tech style and I think that it works well.
You can't really compare a comic drawing with a live-action costume. It's like comparing a sketch of a dress with an actual dress. The comic allows for more vagueness and error.
@@writerpatrick The only counterargument is how beautifully the Spider-Man suit was translated in the same movie. Still, they designed and screen tested an accurate Goblin design, and Raimi decided it wasn’t what he wanted. I still have a lot of respect for attempting even the most fantastical designs before settling on a redesign. I’d also love to see Adam present the prototype Goblin mask prop (it’s still out there).
@@writerpatrick beautiful analogy here because that's what it is. I think we can sill make points on it's design like the military armor inspiration works very well in live action. The original green goblin design would have been extremely challenging to get right. If not impossible. If it were my choice I would have melded the original hobgoblin design with the green goblin to make it more of a suit aesthetic.
It is already long known that, yes in fact it is true, that they wanted to see his mouth through the mask. Initial iterations of the mask were all closed up but at some point, someone on the decision level, after having seen Mr Dafoe's facial expressions and range of muscle movements there, decided that it would be a pity to hide those. So the compromise was made to have this see through mesh for the mouth area.
I was about to say that. If you think this is menacing, the animatronic version was downright scary. Such a pity they didn't go with that one. I never liked the fact they got Willem Dafoe with his rubber face to do the Green Goblin, and then they covered him up completely with this helmet. Although I suppose the animatronic version wouldn't have shown his (real) face either...
@@partydude388 I think the tech was available as they could have done that bit with CGI, but it would probably have gotten too expensive. Still a pity that we got a mask that didn't move at all in the end though...

I like that it's damaged from a visual standpoint, makes it look more realistic, like it was actually used for what happened in the movie. I got worried when Adam was holding the helmet close to him and with one hand.
Looking at this suit, and how mechanical and tech-focused it looks, really makes me think... William Dafoe practically got to be an "Iron Man" long before Robert Downey jr did.
I think it's more similar to Batman Begins. Cutting edge prototype military body armored suit. Radio and light-up feature in the mask. Paint that thing black, slap a bat logo on and you practically have the Batman suit.
It's amazing how it looks like something out of a comic even if they didn't use the original design (Which I kinda like for how creepy it looked). Kinda reminds me of how with Venom, they had plans to show Brock's skull looking evil to show how much he was altered by Venom.
I actually love seeing these prop showcases! It's actually really awesome to see the story and the creativeness that goes on with these things. Answering questions we had decades ago. How did they do that?!
Remember during that time period weren't specular iridescent paint jobs quite popular in everything from automobiles to toys? Particularly green and purple.
It would be so awesome if people who worked on this suit commented on this video to give us an insight into what the electronics were for. I swear there was a scene where you could see Willem's eyes lit up behind the lenses but I can't seem to find it. Amazing to see it like this!
The circuit board in the back was to control the eye opening feature from the scene when the Goblin tries to convince Spiderman to join him. Then was most likely removed and the eyes glued shut and retrofitted with lights so they could be illuminated in the burning building scenes.
4:10 I never saw it until now, but the helmet has a purple pearlescent layer of paint on it so when the light hits it just right, the back of the helmet looks purple; Just like the Goblin's little purple cap thing from the comics! Nice touch!
It's a specialized paint that can be applied to curved surfaces. It creates a continuous shift between two or even three colors. I believe the pigment was made by a California company called "JDS Uniphase". A British company called TVR offered it as a factory option for their cars. There was green/purple, red/blue and several others. My favorite was green/grey/purple. It looked amazing in sunlight - it looked like real-life CGI. The first time I saw it in person my brain had difficulty processing it.
my favorite prop of al time. i noticed the eyes and the mesh when i was like 4. i was 1 when the film came out. i saw the purple. i noticed everything. i love this suit so damn much
The purple shift paint is a product made by ppg, it's called harlequin, it's available in different color shifts, green to purple is sprayed over black, the shift is more drastic due to multiple coats, it's automotive paint, and the effect can be achieved in about 5 minutes
I don’t care what anyone says I’ve always preferred this look to that of the comics, I just think looking at his original design through a modern lens makes it look more like a Halloween costume with a rubber mask and you really just can’t translate that to screen without it looking ridiculous. I’ve also just always thought this helmet looked so incredibly badass and it’s just so nostalgic now
iirc there was a variation of this helmet used for a practical shot in the film. When Green Goblin reveals his eyes to Spider-Man and the yellow eye lenses rise up like a visor in the mask.
Growing up with the first Spider-Man movie I always loved the design of the costume the mask reminds me of a Samaria . Willem still conveys so much emotion in his eyes and u can see his mouth thru the black latex in the mask . it’s intimidating and I can’t help but hear the laugh . the best villian.
The extra electronics in the helmet might be for the scenes when the mask was talking to him and plugged into somthing behind the chair or somthin stab in the dark.
Ohhhhh... The eyes can light up ? Lol... I loved hearimg adams voice imediately switch to that excited child. WE ALL NEED SOMETHING IN LIFE that makes us do that exct same thing.. so pure in its joy its un reproducible... Cheers
I love this very first and iconic Sam Raimi- Green Goblin Suit and of course the incredible Mask. ❤ It's a great Design . And i miss this in NWH Thank's so much for uploading this famous Video
Beautiful costume and movie aswell. I was around 5 or 6 at that time & my dad bought me the dvd and spider man became my favorite superhero ever since. I even had the game on the original Xbox😂
I remember some people being critical of this suit when the movie first came out because it wasn’t like the comics or cartoons, but man you can’t deny the beautiful craftsmanship and attention to details on display!
I always thought the purple pearlescent touch looked fantastic in the movie but man it looks even better behind the scenes, this suit is one of the best looking suits in movie history.
Adam always seems like a bull in a China shop. Everybody else with these artifacts is very careful and slow moving and Adam flings his hands around talking moving around. I’m sure there’s scenes where he’s broken stuff. When he held the mask with one hand and pointed at the suit 😬.
That mask is as iconic as darth vader's mask. Absolute masterpiece. Whoever made sketch designs and ultimately made it with materials they are goated af.
When I was a kid Green Goblin was the scariest and most badass villain, still love the Raimi Spider-Man movies to this day. The suit looks like it's in amazing condition too, still ready for the big screen.
The lenses in the Goblin's helmet went up to reveal his eyes, there might have been smoke, and the helmet was completely enclosing the actors head so they might have added an earpiece/fan.
If I remember correctly in the behind the scenes, there are flexible tubes of light along the outsides of the arms and maybe legs that were supposed to light up but were never featured in the film. I wonder if the wires in the helmet would’ve connected to those through connections running down the neck and into the suit. U can see the tubes in the video they’re on the arms and bracketed in place
Okay, so here are a couple of thoughts I had: 1) Someone used bullet casings as the couplings for the top and bottom helmet pieces. Pre-made, readily available, and some caliber casings easily fight nicely into others. Smart. 2) Extra MOSFET might have been for another helmet in which the eyepieces raised and might have just been used for both helmets. They probably just made two of the same circuit boards not knowing if it would be needed in both helmets. Or it could have been for a remote-control receiver for turning the lights on/off by remote. It's unlikely that a radio would have been necessary.
The motor might be for the eyes. If you remember in one scene, when Goblin knocks out peter and takes him to a rooftop to offer Spidey a chance at joining Goblin, the eyes roll up so you can see his personal eyes. It could just be that the rotating hinges were removed at some point, and the eyes glued back into place. In that scene you can see the purple on the mask, too. I just re-watched it to check if I was right about which scene, and I noticed the purple in it now that I watched this video.
Lots of incredible film artifacts are in museums, in a large part thanks to private collectors. But there aren't enough presently to accept (let alone display) everything, and the market continues to drive new discoveries. If you'd like to see more in museums, your best method of influencing that is to frequently visit current museum collections and encourage others to do so. In my experience over the years, I've found prop and costume exhibits to be rarely swarming with visitors to the same degree as more mainstream fine art.
9:15 if you watch Green Goblin talking about finishing Mary Jane at the end of Spiderman 1, you can see his mouth talking through the mask mesh. I didn't notice as much until I watched it again a little while back. Looks like Adam noticed too.
What I like that no one talks about is the fact that he’s got a collection of masks and so when he made the goblin helmet he took influence from the masks on his wall to intimidate as a samurai would
Halloween 2017 I used master chief armor, Raimi mask, and a purple hooded cloak almost resembling hobgoblin. Ornamentally I used leather belts and a renaissance fest looking satchel. Basically the ragged accessories from NWH. My inspiration was the Alex Ross’ concept art from 2002 depicting Goblin wielding a Toledo sword.
My favorite detail in the suit is the black mesh inside the mouth. In the final fight scene of the movie you can see Willem Dafoe's mouth thru it. Almost like a mouth within a mouth like the Alien movies.
I never thought of this before, but seeing up close makes me think that if you made it gray, gave it a cape and smacked a big bat symbol on the chest; the body would make an awesome batsuit as well
i’ve always thought this suit was perfect, it just needed some purple torn withered fabric here and there across the chest and back almost like a short cloak or something

There was green/purple, red/blue and several others. My favorite was green/grey/purple. It looked amazing in sunlight - it looked like real-life CGI. The first time I saw it in person my brain had difficulty processing it.
The Raimi films are my childhood. I don't think my tastes and opinions would be the sane without that trilogy. Raimi did a banging job
Thanx for sharing the wonderful Green Goblin costume. What a treat. I know you have such fun "unwrapping" Prop Store stuff. 💙🌻💙
That helmet is stunning. I never realised until now just how masterfully crafted it was. 😮
my favorite prop of al time. i noticed the eyes and the mesh when i was like 4. i was 1 when the film came out. i saw the purple. i noticed everything. i love this suit so damn much
The purple shift paint is a product made by ppg, it's called harlequin, it's available in different color shifts, green to purple is sprayed over black, the shift is more drastic due to multiple coats, it's automotive paint, and the effect can be achieved in about 5 minutes
Several companies make an iridescent paint. Not just ppg. Spaz Stix hobby paints and several others have these "color shifting" paints
@bigdeal5394 not back when that suit was made,
@undergroundironentertainment sure they did
I don’t care what anyone says I’ve always preferred this look to that of the comics, I just think looking at his original design through a modern lens makes it look more like a Halloween costume with a rubber mask and you really just can’t translate that to screen without it looking ridiculous. I’ve also just always thought this helmet looked so incredibly badass and it’s just so nostalgic now
this was awesome, whoever gets this really has a piece of spider-man history
iirc there was a variation of this helmet used for a practical shot in the film. When Green Goblin reveals his eyes to Spider-Man and the yellow eye lenses rise up like a visor in the mask.
FYI you're the 17th person to comment this. Worth doing a quick search of the comments before posting in future.
Love this helmet and costume
This is my favorite suit. Better than some of the comic ones imo. Especially the mask. Also the purple reflective stuff is cool
5:21 maybe it's for the retractable eye lens, when goblin was speaking to spiderman on the roof
My favorite costume ever made!
The fact that the color mimics the purple hood from the comics is so fire
Growing up with the first Spider-Man movie I always loved the design of the costume the mask reminds me of a Samaria . Willem still conveys so much emotion in his eyes and u can see his mouth thru the black latex in the mask . it’s intimidating and I can’t help but hear the laugh . the best villian.
Congrats on Adam for finally getting the store URL correct!
Idc. Still looks amazing and still holds up. Which is rare to say about armor from any movie 20 years ago.
❤ It's a great Design
. And i miss this in NWH Thank's so much for uploading this famous Video
Amazing i love Green Goblin!!🤩🤩💯🔥♥️
This suit is an incredible design and adaptation, especially the mask. The mouth and eyes light up, it was only seen in behind the scenes stuff.
We need more of this
Wow its crazy how some single props are visually the whole character and how good it looks
This is really incredible seeing the original green goblin suit from 2002
The lenses in the Goblin's helmet went up to reveal his eyes, there might have been smoke, and the helmet was completely enclosing the actors head so they might have added an earpiece/fan.
Thank you for this video, I hope next is testing original red Raimi spider man suits
Imagine, you are finding this place after apocalypse
The motor might be for the eyes. If you remember in one scene, when Goblin knocks out peter and takes him to a rooftop to offer Spidey a chance at joining Goblin, the eyes roll up so you can see his personal eyes. It could just be that the rotating hinges were removed at some point, and the eyes glued back into place. In that scene you can see the purple on the mask, too. I just re-watched it to check if I was right about which scene, and I noticed the purple in it now that I watched this video.
I never knew about the purple hue on the helmet- so cool!
Its should belong in museum. Like all treasure of old good movies...
What I like that no one talks about is the fact that he’s got a collection of masks and so when he made the goblin helmet he took influence from the masks on his wall to intimidate as a samurai would
I always loved watching dafoes mouth move behind the mesh in spiderman, i think it was a creatuve choixe especially in the final fight scene
That helmet would be fantastic to get a 3D scan of for printing. Could make your own in full scale for cosplay or mini for decoration.
The mesh piece in the mouth I always thought was so cool aesthetically, it added to the creepiness of the suit
This suit is over the top but it has that nostalgic feel to it and Willem Dafoe just brings the character to life so well.
Legendary moment😮
I always wondered if being able to see his mouth move through the mask was a mistake or intentional. What a cool piece of film history!
I'm so glad I got this on my feed
