And not only have they been together since they were kids, they all were able to mature musically through almost four decades of their lives. There’s also bands that have a couple great albums, there’s only 2 founding members out of 6 but they keep producing records you barely hear about but get by touring and fans keep yelling hit songs to play. Radiohead and specifically Thom actually make new music and it sells and it’s just as good as anything they’ve done which is saying something! They’ve never made a crap records (we have to remember the music at the time) and ability to do what they wanted was so different and beautiful. I know people really miss ok computer era. Miss the old way they’d play the guitars. But I always know “3 Listens” which is what I call breaking in a new RH or off shoot album. I know the first listen I’ll be surprised and I think it could be the one I finally don’t click with. Then after the third listen it’s the only thing I pretty much listen to!

This is stunning! The tempo doesn't change, but the phrasing tricks you into perceiving that it has. The verses are definitely 5/4, choruses sound like 9/4 and there's 8/4 and 6/4 parts going on too, in between. But I agree, it's best to just let it was over you and surprise you, rather than fight to make sense of it. It's a beautiful song.

I'll admit it here, Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are the musical embodiment of "aging like a fine wine" and I'm not even sure if this is the best words to describe it.
It's just crazy to me, how their sophomore release under this (arguably) a Radiohead spin-off outfit somehow still managed to be just as interesting as the first one.
Especially when you consider their ages, it's really fantastic to see them continue growing their artistry and maintain relevancy in the current landscape of music industry and trend, while not succumbing into the so-called "boomer mindsets".

    • @Ofthegirl09
      @Ofthegirl09 4 місяці тому +8

He's not a boomer. And music is the one vocation you cannot use ageism with. I mean I get it, I know some artists go off the rails after a certain amount of time trying to chase $$ and relevancy. But if you've been making proper music your entire adult life, why would you start making crap? Not the Thom Yorkes of the world! I can't see Eddie Vedder who will be 60 this year just start putting out chart grabbing music just because he's 60. I wouldn't expect anything less from Yorke or the many other artists who have always been originals.

@@Ofthegirl09 I'm not saying they're boomers in the literal sense, I'm just referring to this "boomer mindset" thing. That is, a sort of conservative POV on music that argues for "a return to a form" to the current trend and direction of popular music, in the broad sense.
The most notable type are people who always complain about the perceived "decline" in modern music but at the same time, attempted to gatekeep certain indie or alternative artists or groups simply for trying to reinvent the wheel and produce music with the appeal for the youth listeners overseas.

What I love about both your videos on The Smile are how you just feel helpless and completely in awe of their greatness both musically and emotionally. I too feel that way. Sometimes it’s best to let it wash over you especially with Radiohead and The Smile. Your respect and adoration just shows how musically inclined, talented and moved by greatness. Some music just makes you go wow, and not even bother trying to bother explaining which I know defeats the entire purpose on this channel 😅 My only tiny gripe and I really don’t mean this disrespectfully is I would love to see you just watch longer snippets and see the genuine reaction cos we as fans of you would wait for you to watch through and then hear your opinion. Maybe one day you might consider that but i ain’t complaining one bit. Keep them coming man. I really love this channel and your wonderful musical mind 🤘🎶❤️
Also that Scott Walker reference is so spot on. I’m their incredible documentary Meeting people is Easy about the release and two year world tour for Ok computer they use “On Your Own Again” by Scott Walker and it’s stuck with me since I was 12. I’m 40 now and it’s still there in my head. Incredible song and they turned me on to him actually and subsequently The Walker Brothers who aren’t brothers at all. What that if you haven’t yet cos it’s an incredible documentary about the greatest album in the last 30 years and in some people’s minds and hearts including mine ever. It changed everything as I’m sure you know. Just go watch that documentary and see what led Thom Yorke break down and then go on to record Kid - A.

Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, hm, I wonder, have they ever been involved in a project that set out to be any sort of chart-topping bit of pop art with a couple of beats in the mix that might get hacked out later by various Atlanta or Hollywood producers to serve as backing tracks for something Nicki Minajesque or Kanye Westish. Don't think it's in 'em. Greenwood's out there now creating some of the most memorable movie soundtracks of the current age and Yorke, fairly recently, when asked about his work on the soundtrack for the "Suspiria" remake, spoke about how he was making spells in his studio or something to that effect. I pre-ordered "Pablo Honey" when I was a kid and told all my mates Radiohead were gonna be the biggest band in the world one day, and then "Q" Magazine held a poll revealing Radiohead to be the best band in the world in the year 2000. And let's be frank, "Pablo Honey" was the definitive first album - total British college rock, but unlike any other British release at the time, and although everything Radiohead have released since then has diverged sometimes massively from whatever came before it, when listening to "Pablo" for the first time today while being familiar with more recent albums, most of us would still be able, pretty quickly, to identify the band.
All of Thom Yorke's side projects have been f*cking gold for music lovers. The Smile - Thom and Jonny together with a jazz drummer by the name of Tom Skinner - is only carrying on that legacy. My gods, it's just magic. And to my mind, a Justin Hawkins endorsment carries true critical weight. Can't really think of many others the opinions of whom I care to entertain. OH, YES! COUNTING IT OUT! The tune feels so slow and pastoral, but I can only really get the timing if I count in at a fairly quick tempo. There are a lot of sevens in there. When it breaks down for that weighted, heavy, lazy chorus, there I find it easier to count it slowly and I find I can understand it in complete measures of six. But it's true. Picking it apart, although impossible to avoid doing as a musician, really does rob it of a lot of the value it offers. The guys are just too freakin' good, man. Just too freakin' good.

That's a good way of putting it. It sounds like a song that's really made for people who enjoy all aspects of modern (> 70s). Would I listen to it every day? No. Is it an ear worm? No. But, it does have a place? Most definitely. Maybe during a chill out session after a stressful week.
Also thanks to you and the rest of the gang (including Softie and the other amazing guys and gals behind the scenes). The Tokyo event was the best show I've been to in years. Also, I think one of your plectrums got stuck in the lighting rig! 😂
Hopefully you're all well now and ready for the Aussie leg (ooh err) of the tour.

I once asked a Radiohead fan group what song by The Darkness Radiohead should cover, reciprocating The Darkness's timeless cover of Street Spirit. None of the fans seemed to find the idea enticing or even amusing. I reckon Thom would be into it though, and could probably drag Jonny along if he promised him he could use the Ondes Martenot on it. But the question remains: what song?

"They're just messing around and having a daft laugh"
They did what Metallica did with Lux Eterna: take bits from popular songs and make your new song sound like all of them.
There is a reason why this guy keeps saying "now it sounds like"... it's because it does. It constantly sounds like something very good. It ISN'T very good, it just sounds like something we really like and so we get the same feeling.
Watch the recent BBC live performance and play "spot the notes that are in tune", or "spot the time the singer hit the note he was aiming for". This is a great post-production band.

That is seriously well thought out music composition, imagine having to write out the notation, imagine having to memorise the arrangement, constant switching time signature and that tempo change. And it still sounds amazing, that's just showing off taking all those variables and still producing a really good song that will unfortunately only have a limited audience in modern music trends. Put simply its genius that will never get fully appreciated unfortunately, but it is amazing.

There are many moments on this album that sound like the Beatles. Most of all, the noisy transition in Bending Hectic which is very very similar to the orchestral transition in A Day in the Life.

For anyone wondering what the 'answer' is to the time signature mystery, it's 7 bars of 5/4 and then a bar of 6/4 which is why justin is being thrown off.
The chorus seems to be in something like 9/4 but in a very loose swung half time which gives it a feel like it's slowing down more than it is and that the pulse has shifted. You can count through it though.
