Greenwood is an immensely talented man, when you put him and Yorke together it's no wonder we enjoy the music they create
Did you catch the live stream by The Smile? Only Thom and Jonny could create an entire record that avoids anything in 2 or 4 time. I could hardly find the downbeats, and I'm a musician, and a sound engineer for a living. The whole set was basically post-facto metric ambiguity, I have listened 3 times and still haven't habituated enough to judge most of it against my tastes.
@@aarongrubbs8311 👏👏👍
True
@@bengsgarage2619 Its such a shame how garbage and hateful his politics are though. Talented guy of course.
Yeah hes a great musician.. but ill tell you every member of radiohead matters... if you remove anyone of them it wont be the same...
Insanely talented being. Just saw him with The Smile; when he got on stage everyone cheered and he made the most surprised gesture ever, as if he wasn't aware of the musical genius he's been for the past 30 years.
Jonny, and RADIOHEAD as a whole, are one of those rare artists/bands that a rare and beyond brilliant.
y the smile)
Rare x2
Their last albums were garbage
One of those rare artists that are rare.
They genuinely love playing together which has helped allow them to grow and evolve as a band
He’s a genius, no doubt about it
*0:33** What movie is this scene from please?*
agreed
@@bobinpune looks like close encounters to me, as he's referencing John Williams.
Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
Define the much overused term 'genius'.
Jonny Greenwood mesmerized me with "Phantom Thread", but some of his works like "Norwegian Wood" and "There Will Be Blood" truly hold my attention from beginning to end. I can't wait to hear his works in "Spencer" and "The Power of the dog"
*0:33** What movie is this scene from please?*
The Power of the Dog soundtrack is unreal.
@@andrewwilliams4283 Better than James Horner's "Titanic"?
@@bobinpune close encounters of the third kind.
Jesus, you mean to tell me that Johnny Greenwood has been scoring all these crazy-good movies over the years? This is blowing my mind.
He's definitely at a different level. He can hear past the normal and makes the very complex melodies and juxtapositions accessible. As an early student of music, that is extremely difficult. With Thom Yorke, that is some creative team.
My fav guitarist man ever .
A monumental talent he is, and it’s no wonder why Radiohead is one of the most important bands ever!
Hi I recommend a song called 'The Bond Villain' by Robert Nix
House of Woodcock is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I have ever heard. Every time I hear it, it sounds like a miracle
It truly feels like a piece written in that time, rather than the score of a movie set in it
I feel the exact same way. I hadn't given much thought to soundtracks until I heard that song, and I realized film scores are where some of the most beautiful music of our time is almost hidden in plain sight.
The music in “There Will Be Blood” is as important as the dialogue. It sets the entire atmosphere of the movie.
Lets all worship Jonny Greenwood.
Haha that title is an instant click. Greenwood is a legend!
Lovely analysis. Until 13 minutes and 22 seconds ago I had no idea Jonny Greenwood composed movie scores. This was a pleasant surprise.
I still think of Greenwood as being in his early twenties. There is an earnestness in his composition.
Well done. I hope he gets more assignments. Let us not forget the genius of Ed O'Brien. With all of the talk of Yorke and the Greenwoods, we should recognize that all of the RH band members are phenomenal musicians and writers in their own right. EOB, gone solo, had a top 20 album (US & UK) and a US No. 5 hit in 2020.
And Phil!
The brilliance of every member of Radiohead is astonishing.
It's just 5 brilliant musicians. Take anyone out and it doesn't sound like them anymore
His work in You Were Never Really Here is absolute bliss. It communicates so much love and compassion. Thanks for using that track at the end of the video
Most certainly, that’s probably my favorite score ever! I wish he would’ve touched on You Were Never Really Here because got dang that score compliments the movie so well
In my humble opinion, There Will Be Blood is the greatest film score in the history of cinema. It is surely the most beautiful and original for me and every time leaves me staggered and awestruck when I experience it. It’s certainly one of the most significant pieces of music in this century. I feel like it will be held in the same esteem as the most important scores of the 20th century. All I can say is that Jonny Greenwood is single-handedly saving the stagnant world of film music and The Oscars don't deserve Jonny Greenwood...
He really is a genius - when I used to learn Radiohead guitar parts the chord vocings alone blew my mind.
Even the early rock-y stuff. Have you seen how many chords are in Just?
@@roryturner9773 It's amazing. My Iron Lung harmonically superb too. And the lead guitar work is sublime.
I love Radiohead and cant believe this guy did There Will Be Blood.
That movie struck me so hard at the time, and continues to linger in the musical, moody, emotional parts of my mind
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
My favourite gig of all time was seeing Jonny and Thom at a secret gig at Glastonbury. Between them doing both Thoms solo stuff and older radiohead classics.
Karma police at the end and we were still singing as we all left.
His mind ... Greenwood J.
Must be filled with wonderful symphony's
A brilliant musical genius and a wonderfully kind man. A rare combination.
Always loved his guitar solos. They sound nothing like guitar solos.
listen to Primus and Meshuggah solos. Same idea to an even greater effect
Beautifully written my man.
Jonny Greenwood seems to among the few composers who capture the film's core identity down to a T.
Every piece of music he writes for every score, is completly different in terms of composition and instrumentation.
*0:33** What movie is this scene from please?*
@@bobinpune pretty sure it's close encounters of the third kind
Its such a shame he's a terf. So sad to see people be so talented and clever in one area and so misguided and hate-filled in another.
I've always loved his playing on 'Paranoid Android'. It's so beautifully jagged.
I had no idea he scored 'There Will Be Blood'. All the times I've seen it, the music has stood out to me as being as haunting as Day-Lewis' performance.
Watch the live performance of that song on 'BBC Later with Jools Holland'
It's better than the studio recording, it's absolutely sublime.
Amazing range and career progression. Although There Will be Blood and Phantom Thread’s scores are masterful, the most beautiful piece of music written by Greenwood to date imho is Alethia from The Master.
I fell in love with Alethia after seeing the trailer for the master.. not often I know the moment I first heard and became enthralled with a song
He’s the most inventive guitar play I think I’ve ever heard, mind blowing what he comes up with
I just discovered Johnny Greenwood today after watching the Tiny Desk video. Saying I'm a new fan is an understatement. It is an honor to live at the same time and share this world with such a master. I hope we cross paths one day.
His work with PTA alone is enough to put him in the list of greatest film composers ever.
Who is PTA?
@@alexyaubry208 Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the best directors of his generation
I never knew he wrote the Phantom Thread music. It was beautiful
His score for We Should Talk About Kevin is also amazing!!
Insight into his genius appeared on "The Bends" - Fake Plastic Trees and Street Spirit (Fade Out). From his arrangements of the melodic strings in Street Spirit, to the organ tones and guitar rifts in Fake Plastic, this was produced by someone who understood completely the recipe for the right temper and combination of instruments that compliment the mood, voice or timing!
I think Moon Shaped Pool is really a triumph, mostly due to his strings.
I thought EOB composed Street Spirit? Or maybe you're talking about something else
@@edgeworth097they are talking about the strings, ed wrote the riff
@@brazilianknuckles7900 Ah, I see. Thank you for clarifying that, I don't know why I didn't even see it in the original comment tbh
finally a proper video on Jonny Greenwood
The channels “Listening In” and “David Bruce Composer” have fantastic videos on him as well!
Awesome documentary! Jonny Greenwood makes the world a better place.
Jonny Greenwood is one of those artists who can’t be criticized because he’s an organic, ever evolving genius, working in a space of his own invention and control. It’s Greenwood’s world, we’re just lucky he shares some of it with us.

Love, love, love…..his music with Radiohead brings me to tears and in a mood like nothing else does. Their work is the soundtrack to my life….
Absolutely the best 13 minutes and 23 seconds I've spent in a long time.
Greenwood is such a talented musician
I rewatch creep often to watch Jonny. He is so unique, so talented.
Power Of The Dog was simply stunning. His music starred in the film.
Just heard a song on Spencer and now im here. I feel im about to go down a Greenwood rabbit hole.
Johnny is in the greatest rock band of all time, so it’s no surprise that he is a great musician.
I listen to Alma ever since I experienced heartbreak. Sandalwood II is another favorite, so many gems in Phantom Thread alone
I know a movie is gonna make me love it if Jonny is in there doing music. Still need to watch "You Were Never Really Here"
As the worlds biggest Radiohead fan, I can attest to the man’s genius 👍 the fact he has developed into the most sought after composer in film is no surprise to me, the man has a unique ear 😉
I would have thought radiohead fans possess a higher level of maturity than your user name implies
@@Neo5GT Maybe, but it’s actually true mate 😉
I was blown away watching his “creep” guitar work at the Fillmore just a few feet away in the 90’s.
the hair, the not aging, the style, and the most important his very proggressive mindset twoards music
when you see him in the Radiohead - Creep video, you know how special and different he is. Special enough to be left alone.
I've been listening to the soundtrack from Phantom Thread for a few years and just now realized it's him. Wow
One of my favorites!
I had no idea he composed film scores.
This is news to me 👍
Well presented! I too love Jonny Greenwood. Such a beautiful scientist and mathematician of sound.
The music from the movie - You Were Never Really Here, was amazing.
Absolutely spot-on commentary on Jonny’s film score work to date.
I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this video. Amazing job!!!
Jonny and Reznor compositions for films are amazing
Brilliant, kind,so talented. I just adore that guy!!!
Wow what a wonderful doc! Loved every minute! Congratulations Ashton Gleckman for portraying Greenwood’s brilliance! I was so moved that you captured in his passion his deeply nuanced scores. Bravo!🎉
The man just doesn’t age; he’s the same since 1997
So gifted and also a wonderful individual.
i will never forget the first time i saw Bodysong and how those songs stuck with me for so may years... a masterful piece there...
The score to There Will Be Blood stood out so much to me amongst other orchestral scores. I was not surprised to find it was Greenwood, what a wonderful talent. My own musical life began the same way, the love of recorders from age 4 that stayed with me all through school when others moved to more 'regular' wind instruments. Then also Viola in the orchestra, moved to percussion, a little piano. Bass guitar as I joined bands. Sadly, not the talent, dedication or luck! Long live Jonny Greenwood.
Excellent work! This opened up a whole new world beyond Radiohead for me, and gave me a much better understanding of Jonny's amazing talents... thank you 🙏
what a beatifuly crafted video. i cant wait to begin listening to his scores. thank you.
Jonny Greenwood is just so cool
“Recklessly, crazily beautiful”
-Hans Zimmer
Jonny's hair is a force on its own.
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
Probably the only person that took the recorder seriously
pure musical genius. Fascinates me. Nice doc.
A humble genius, so amazing in his music.
One of the best ever!!!!!!!!!!
been listening to radiohead since pablo honey, and am ashamed to say i didn't know Jonny Greenwood did scores. always always loved the notes he plays, and the way he plays them. not sure which i love more...
Amazing work. He is such an incredible artist.
Nice homage to Radiohead's second-best-known performer!! Never knew Thom was accompanied by such talent, but kinda makes sense. Thanks for the insights,
You forgot the highlight of his musical/cinematic career, his involvement in "dance like a hippogriff" by the Weird Sisters during Harry Potter 4. Magic Hurts was a corker of a track come to think of it! 🤔😂
Jonny's music is the Mona lisa of music
The openning chords to "Sandy's necklace" is a good example.
It's very interesting how he manages to find the gray sweet spot.... all it takes is a slight shift in pitch.
His music is all emotions explored in one go without being too over/under-whelming.
His ominous yet magnetic note choices in "Blow out" "climbing up the walls" and "how to disappear completely" are good examples of his 'moments' in RH.
jonny greenwood is one of my all time favorite guitarist
So talented
Thank Goodness for people like him on our planet!!
Hell yeah! Awesome video. Perhaps my favourite film composer of all.
Keep perpetuating that beautiful of the music world 🌍
Spencer was such an underrated film. Really unique way to do a biopic, and his score was sublime.
Btw, he’s my favorite guitarist/musician in my favorite band ever.
I don't know the context, but Jonny always felt to me like a music lover.
Dude just simply enjoyed making whatever tf he can to find new sounds and his work w the guitar only is already very stunning and full of cool experimentation.
A real inspiration and a wild card!
He is such a talented and gifted composer. I´m amazed how he can create rock and at the same time film soundtracks.
He has this discreet and sober touch, but at the same time it surprises you.
Thank you for this
this man is my inspiration!
Ashton, well done sir.
Beautifully written. Your analysis and interpretations are wonderfully insightful, and some of your phrasings are so beautiful, I had to write them down. Well done, Ashton. 👏
Absolutely amazing video, congratulations!
He's an incredible artist....keep being a fix creature my friend
I know it’s not one of his most renowned pieces of work but Tree Synthesisers has an effect on me I cannot explain. When those low synths drop for the first time it takes me somewhere I want to be and then when the higher harmony synths come in, I’m just floating somewhere, I have no idea where. I find it so incredible that music has this effect on me and am thankful that it does
Such a talent. Beautiful video. Thanks ❤
Okay, yes. He is definitely the man of all recent time
Brilliant work You had me enthralled.
I got to this by listening to lucky by radiohead. I always knew of greenwoods brilliance but now im totally enthralled.
That was great! Very inspiring. I'll be watching this again at some point.
Beautiful work Ashton!
Masterfull artist Jonny Greenwood
Brilliant composer! My favorite movie's score was made for Phantom Thread but Greenwood can translate the emotion of evey movie scene in each musical note. I hope that he get an Oscar one day.
Thank you. I missed "The Bodysong" reference in the video, as it was at the beginning of his music score career and was very significant.
